China May Ban Live Broadcasts During Olympics

China might bar live television broadcasts from Tiananmen Square during the Beijing Olympics, apparently unnerved by the recent outburst of unrest among Tibetans and fearful of protests in the heart of the Chinese capital.

A ban on live broadcasts would wreck the plans of NBC and other major international networks, who have paid hundreds of millions of dollars to broadcast the Aug. 8-24 games and are counting on eye-pleasing live shots from the iconic square.

I have lived and worked in China for ten years now, traveled all over, worked in various capacities, have Chinese family, etc. There is ONE thing and ONLY ONE thing that will cause China to pay attention and change. A boycott of their products. That is the only thing that will cause them to listen. The only thing. And believe me, they WILL LISTEN to that - loud and clear! It's simple too, wow. But, unfortunately, while everyone is big on talk, almost no one really cares enough to even take such a simple action as that. The world is full of windbags. Any poster here who buys another product from China, while complaining about how something should be done...well, you know.

Nice to know they have over a Trillion in our Treasuries, are buying up our wealth producing assets, and annually re-affirm that they are Communists, isn't it? Our country is like a bad relationship: "I just know I can change him, if we get married." Sadly, these relationships, like ours with China, will end in a divorce--and they'll get everything.

Well, they may, but is anyone going to notice? I won't.

ditto.....I do not care if they do not broadcast the Olympics AT ALL.

The Olympic Games are no longer necessary. Big waste of time, money, and steroids.

Hoo Boy! Excessive control seems to be a bit of a problem amongst China's power elites. This sort of control qualifies as aberrant for sure. How do such twisted people manage to get to the top and run the lives of millions of other far more normal people?

Paranoid, fearful little men. They think their iron-fisted control speaks to their strength, but it's just the opposite: it speaks to their weakness, their fear of impotency.

Everyone sees what is happening in Tibet and how the Chinese are dealing with it. The cat's out of the bag. Maybe it's time to seriously consider the unthinkable: return Tibet to the Tibetans? China's standing in the world would rise appreciably. Censoring the Olympics just puts another nail in their coffin. Besides being control freaks, these people are surprisingly stupid.

Are you, too, suffering from some of the same mental deficits that the Chinese authorities are clearly suffering from? If so, I don't think I can help you.

People assume that Red China is still a Communist state but they are mistaken.

China is now a totalitarian state having come from the left, just as the USA moves

towards the same midnight hour from the right. The one most influential person

in these two merging giants is Rupert Murdoch , actively working to bring about

the perpetual wars and scurrilous partnerships of Huxley's Brave New World.

Gosh, could China's chickens be coming home to roost? Either that, or Wal*Mart is going to start building internment camps for their employees. Maybe they should worry more about FREEDOM and less about FREE TRADE.

I think you Yanks should strongly protest this brutal uncivilized behaviour by the Commies in China. After all they invaded a small sovereign nation which was no threat to them, destroyed their military, occupied the country with over-whelming military power, killed or jailed their opponents, and imposed their system by force of arms. Oh, wait a minute.

Uh, maybe that's precisely why Bush and his administration have been so quiet? They don't really have a moral leg to stand on. And would only be labelled as hypocrites by the Chines power elite.

This is how Bush has destroyed our reputation in the world.

People have hated America for years....It's called jealosy my friend and part of the human condition. Muslims have been screaming "Death to America" since the 70's. Bush has definitely made it worse. But don't hang it all on him. Let's also not forget that little incident called 9/11....I suppose Bush is responsible for that too? Or maybe he is responsible for keeping America safe since then? No, we can't give him credit for that can we?

Wow, you really are twisted to admire Chinese communism that much. When you Republicans get complete control and implement your Chinese communist policies in America, you will find yourself against the same spirit that broke this country away from the bonds of English imperialism.

Here are the results of the policies you so admire:

Obviously, the Chinese communists have not learned the tricks and trades of survival in this day and age in politics, especially in a democracy like ours. They should learn from Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and other politicians of this country in how to handle criticisms and remarks of all kinds, right or wrong, reasonable or not. The more they are sensitive to outside opinions, the worse their behavior becomes and the more they will be harrassed by the media. It is a vicious cycle. The freedom of speech is sometimes, just that. Loudness doesn't mean that it is always right. And all crazies have a right to express themselves.

They should act like McCain and tell the world that they would be in Tibet for the next 100 years and nobody would think they are wrong. If they acted like they did something wrong, boy, the whole world would assume that they did wrong. It's a game perfected by us American politicians, making right and wrong sometimes very difficult to discern. It all seemed to be party politics. That is what free speech is all about, until one day, the truth comes back to haunt us.

Yes, true enough, which makes their present status on the evolutionary ladder so tragic, so heartbreaking. All that history, all that potential thrown away. If their present state of governance is a measure of where you end up after all this time, the human race is f*cked.

I've been a student of Tibetan history for thirty years, so I'm intimately familiar with the ongoing abuses suffered by Tibetans at the hands of the Chinese all these years. Oddly and inexplicably, the world has chosen, for the most part, to ignore the plight of these people.

If we were truly supportive of oppressed peoples everywhere in the world, our government would be unbending in their relations with China: return Tibet to the Tibetans if you want trade relations. If not, expect sanctions.

Politicians on both sides are beholden to corporations, and very many have had a hand in selling the middle class down the river, including the Clintons. But the vitriol on the HuffPo comes without context. Minor offenses are magnified out of all proportion. The sales job isn't necessary. The naked facts alone are damning enough. Put all the blame on the Clintons and you'll get it in the back from the politician you weren't paying attention to.

To American commenters: We don't have any right to be self-righteous right now. After causing the death of a million Iraqis, making 4 million of them refugees and please don't forget the 5000 a month dead children during the first Bush and Clinton administrations, it is not wise to throw the first stone.

Regardless of the US's past and current actions, it can and should condemn China for its abuses. If all sinners look the other way when they see a wrong, then everyone's in trouble. Hypocrisy should be avoided (or reduced) by ethical behavior in the first place--not by remaining silent in the face of injustice. A hypocritical statement by the US has less of an effect, but its not worthless.

5,000 dead children a month? Really, where, dopey? I'm sorry I mean dolphy? What is it with the anti-Americanism from the far left? Keep it up, keep up the self-hatred, hatred of America. The republicans will be laughing all the way to the White House in November. Are you seriously goung to compare China to Ameria? Oh, what's the use? You're hatred is probably so deep, nothing will change your mind. It's sad because this really is a beautiful country.

I wish the far-left would all move to Europe where they belong. Where the self-guilt and self-loathing over colonialism and their continued pursuit of heaven on earth through socialism & multi-culturalism and appeasement has moved the once dominate continent beyond it's heyday into decay and well on it's way to being irrevelant on the world stage.

A beautiful country that has done a lot of bad things, and continues to do so because of a small segment of its population--the jingoists-- whose political influence overwhelms the essential decency of the rest of the populace, and the corporations who benefit from the jingoism.. I guess it is OK to lie about reasons for a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, as long as one wears a cheap rhinestone flag in one's lapel.

How beautiful is that?
