The New York Daily News reports that a controversial political strategist alerted federal authorities to Eliot Spitzer's dalliances with prostitutes, adding the detail that the former governor kept "his midcalf-length black socks" on while using the services of the high-priced call girl:

A controversial political strategist sent a letter to the feds in November saying that then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer "used the services of high-priced call girls" in Florida - and kept his socks on while he did.

The missive from a lawyer for Roger Stone said his client had obtained the lowdown on Spitzer from "a social contact in an adult-themed club."

"The governor has paid literally tens of thousands of dollars for these services," the letter to the FBI reads, according to the Miami Herald. "It is Mr. Stone's understanding that the governor paid not with credit cards or cash but through some prearranged transfer.

"It is also my client's understanding from the same source that Governor Spitzer did not remove his midcalf-length black socks during the sex act," said the letter, which was signed by Stone's attorney Paul Rolf Jensen. "Perhaps you can use this detail to corroborate Mr. Stone's information."

Why are the media campaigning against Eliot Spitzer? Find out by reading the excellent article at the link below:

"A useful rule of thumb in evaluating spectacular scandals around prominent public figures is to ask what and who might want to eliminate that person."

While everybody's laughing at Spitzer jokes, are you not recognizing the name ROGER STONE?
ROGER STONE, member of CREEP?
ROGER STONE of Willy Horton fame?
ROGER STONE who helped throw the 2000 election?
Spitzer's resignatiuon was a Republican setup - he hurt too many Republican crooks on Wall Street.

And the best reply is.... so freakin' what? Maybe he always has cold feet?

Actually, in a hurry, or lazy and inconsiderate.

There is nothing more ridiculous looking than a man wearing nothing but his socks.

or ugly feet. He paid his price of admission, he can leave his dress socks on. That's not exactly a fetish.

What does the color of his socks have to do with the political hit job scored on the guy who was fighting predatory lending by the same people to whom Busco gave a taxpayer-borne handout/bailout package? What has his self-funded hobby to do with the fact that he, as a john, was subject to investigation by a massive federal taskforce, while the clients of the "DC madam" case (coincidentally involving high-ranking GOPers) were let loose? I mean, surely news involving a fetching blonde is a must-pursue for any self-respecting journo, but wouldn't there be a more pressing deeper point here that might do with some actual journalistic work perchance?

Wow. Why would anyone even care what he wore? I don't even care that he paid for sex with a consenting adult with his own money.

I do care that he was singled out for prosecution, but SOCKS??? Somebody needs to get a life.

If you're a fan of Coupling (the BBC version) you know that Eliot fell into the sock gap. But I guess when you're paying, you can wear whatever you want.

While i'm really grateful to know the details about the socks, I'd like to know a little more about the "controversial political strategist," too. Thanks.

If only vaudville and burlesque were still around. What a great act Eliot Spizer gliding accross the stage wearing only his black executive stockings and garters while Larry Craig wearing only his shiny new "mary-janes" does an Irish step dance and Bill "firsr Black president" Clinton in grease-paint and on bended knee belts out a medley of Al Joelson favorites.

One thing to watch for is whether or not he is indicted. If he is indicted, they will push hard to make an example out of him unless he brings down a lot of people with him (which I don't see as possible). The US Attorney's office only indicts cases when they think they have a slam dunk chance of winning at trial, thus, they have an amazing success rate.

This is outstanding reporting! I found myself wondering repeatedly while pursuing the engaging and insightful coverage of this story if the Governor kept his black knee high socks on during his sexual activities with those escorts. Thank you NY Times for going the extra mile on this one!

I live down South, so I knew nothing about Eliot Spitzer until the hooker scandal broke. These stories about him being asked to pose for Playgirl and having sex with his socks on make him seem ridiculous to me. Perhaps that the intention.

I am in the Birmingham area, and the News published AP articles about Spitzer when he was NY AG, so I knew he was a challenger of the powerful. You are probably right about him being ridiculed. That is the nail in the political coffin. What is notable here is that the government's assertion that this investigation began with a bank issue is now looking like a falsehood.

OK -- this is really too much. Exactly how far are we going to go with this? "He kept on his...socks."

Why would ANYONE care? I'm sure virtually everyone has a habit or four that might be deemed a little out of the mainstream. But in our society, we're expected to keep those aspects of our lives private.

While it may indeed be the public's business that Former Gov.Spitzer used the services of a prostitute (and I've had serious doubts about the verasity of this 'investigation' since day two), now we feel that we have the right to report something like this?

What's next? There's something strange about him because he prefers chocolate milk on his cereal? These people NEED LIVES OF THEIR OWN!

Some folks die with their boots on, but Spitzer screwed with his socks on.

Yeah, this was a political hit.

Bush keeps reminding us that there are "active" Al-Quaeda cells in this country. Then why the hell was the FBI investigating a sex operation instead of tracking the "bad guys"? The FBI's spokesman said they were afraid that Spitzer was taking payoffs or being blackmailed. Right. Their bosses must have jumped with glee when they found call girls.

How the MSM loves a sex scandal, and how they ignore a financial one. The CEO of Bear Stearns almost brought down the economy, has lost thousands of jobs and billions in capital, but he'll walk away with his own millions intact. Hell, someone will probably put him on a board of directors to "ease" his transition. Spitzer had sex with a prostitute and will never hold public office again. How can anyone justify that the second is a worse crime/sin than the first? Just in terms of how many people were harmed.

The sheer hypocrisy makes me sick.
