US Interpreter In Iraq Denied Green Card After 4 Years Translating For US Forces

During his nearly four years as a translator for U.S. forces in Iraq, Saman Kareem Ahmad was known for his bravery and hard work. "Sam put his life on the line with, and for, Coalition Forces on a daily basis," wrote Marine Capt. Trent A. Gibson.

Gibson's letter was part of a thick file of support -- including commendations from the secretary of the Navy and from then-Maj. Gen. David H. Petraeus -- that helped Ahmad migrate to the United States in 2006, among an initial group of 50 Iraqi and Afghan translators admitted under a special visa program.

Last month, however, the U.S. government turned down Ahmad's application for permanent residence, known as a green card. His offense: Ahmad had once been part of the Kurdish Democratic Party, which U.S. immigration officials deemed an "undesignated terrorist organization" for having sought to overthrow former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Ahmad, a Kurd, once served in the KDP's military force, which is part of the new Iraqi army. A U.S. ally, the KDP is now part of the elected government of the Kurdish region and holds seats in the Iraqi parliament. After consulting public Web sites, however, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services determined that KDP forces "conducted full-scale armed attacks and helped incite rebellions against Hussein's regime, most notably during the Iran-Iraq war, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom."

This is not America. This man put his life on the line for our troops, in fact he put himself in more danger since most see these translators as traitors to Iraq. He is as much as hero for this country as our soldiers, and I know our soldiers would agree that his assistance saved their lives.

He deserves to be in this country. Further, Bush calls this "Operation Iraqi Freedom". When the Iraqi citizens fear for their lives, are forced out of their homes and into hiding or, in many cases, out of their homeland, that is not freedom. When these people are willing to strap on bombs and kill themselves in the hopes of killing the occupying American troops, it should be clear to the most ignorant of people that they do not consider themselves free. It is time to leave and time to hold this insane administration accountable.

Cheney, when confronted with the views of the people, just smirked and said, "So?" We need to take him out, smile and respond, "So there!"

No good deed goes unpunished.

What the hell is this? He was part of a political force with DEMOCRATIC in the name. He fought to depose a dictator that we loathed - that we ourselves have fought to get rid of! Then, he works with our invasion force, which has caused more harm than good in his country, putting his own ass on the line...

And this is the repayment he receives?

Pardon a lady's language here, but this is utter and complete bullshit. I'll be writing my congress-critters post haste.

The Bush administration routinely craps all over our service members, and especially returning Iraqi war veterans.
Why is anyone surprised that our Immigration Service treated Mr. Ahmad like a used Dixie cup?
Expecting incompetent, mean spirited civil service boobs to behave with anything other than incompetence and a disregard for common courtesy is a waste of time.

Let me see if I have this right......We have a " Yellow Draft Dodger" as VP a "Silver Spoon" Draft Dodger as President. Then this guy put's his ass in the wringer for "them" and gets told he his not worth a green card ( they are really pink in color, not green).
This Administration has sold The American people down the river and everyone else who ever believed in it.........unless your in the OIL business that is.

I see your posters widely perceive this as a disgrace - and they are right to do so.

If it is any consolation the UK government is behaving in just as disgraceful a manner to the interpreters who risked their lives translating for UK forces in Iraq.

Moral: once a country's government is prepared to wage an unlawful war of aggression; is prepared to lie to its citizens about is reasons for war; is prepared to torture; is prepared to bomb civilians; what reason is there to expect it honour obligations to those who have in good faith assisted them ?

Governments are in theory accountable (i) to the legislature (ii) to the courts and (iii) to the people and if goverments besmirch the honour of the nation, the ultimate remedy is at the ballot box.

Good luck in November, pray that the Democratic party does not tear itself apart meanwhile.

LL,

the ancient Greeks asserted "Expect no gratitude from the wicked."

This old school American independent voter has always been fully aware of the fundamentally wicked nature of the Bush family members, and their "Bushevik" partisans.

We will see a Democrat in the White House in November, as the alternative is frankly unthinkable.

Cheers!

Damn right too. We need him to help out with the Surge. It's been a great success and we need men like him on the front line, not making Kebabs in Burbank.

These would be the selfsame immigration officials who did such a bang-up job keeping track of the nineteen deviants who created that big mess on September 11, 2001 and coordinated so effectively with the FBI (one of whose informants was living with a couple of them)?

THOSE immigration officials?

I am going to sound like Rev. Jeremiah Wright--but we Americans are going to rot in hell for what we have done to the Iraqis and the nation of Iraq---and to ourselves.

This country hardly makes me proud to say I am an American any longer---it pretty much makes me what to puke.

I guess the Iraqi people know where they stand in the eyes of the U.S. - at least their homeless dogs who made friends with US soldiers get a paid ($10,000) trip back to democracy loving America and a new peaceful home. If this salt doesn't burn that festering wound, then it is simply the amazing resiliency of the Iraqi people that prevents a total collapse from the pain.

Imagine America has been invaded by a foreign power.
What would you think about Americans who work for the invaders?

No one so far has dared to give me an answer without showing industrial-grade hypocrisy.

You look VERY hypocritical to anyone who's not drunk with US patriotism...

What does that have to do with anything? We're not talking about Iraqi treatment of these translators. We're talking about how the Americans treat them.

They are perceived as allies to the enemy (US) by some in Iraq, they want to leave, come here because it is dangerous for them to stay in Iraq. Get it?

"There is no victory in the destruction of one tyrant while breeding 10,000 terrorists."

www.bodyofwar.com ... read the reviews! ... watch the trailer!

In October of 2002, when most lawmakers were rushing to get their votes in so their constituents would not denounce them as pacifists and vote them out of office, "the immortal 23" senators voted AGAINST the war...

"You're sentencing thousands of Americans to sure death."

"Some of you did that (when the Senate authorized the Vietnam engagement in 1964), and you can look at the 50,000 names on the wall down on the Mall. Don't do it again."

I am certain that if this man had accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and renounced Muhummad the Bush administration would have seen right to let him into America.

The US sends its own young troops to die for Oil and Arms profits... why would it care about some Iraqi nobody ?

Wake up America, life is cheap in the eyes of T"he Decide"r and the criminals in the Oil and Arms industry.

"Expect no gratitude from the wicked" runs the ancient Greek wisdom. Lessee... Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (used to be INS) is part of the Bureau of Homeland Security (a Bushevik creation run by a Bushevik appointee).

Yup. Expect no gratitude from the wicked.

Looks like my Texas "Repedophile" representatives need to get another letter from one of their *independent* constituents...

If it ain't denying benefits to deserving veterans, it's this BS....

The Pentagon and U.S. government haven't a clue what they're doing.

They obviously don't seem to realize that the people that they abandon like this will tell others that our military cannot be trusted, and will go back on their word.

Soon they won't be able to find the assistance they need to survive in Iraq.

What fools.

THIS IS HOW OUR CURRENT ADMINISTRATION TREATS OUR PATRIOTS WHO COME BACK FROM DEFENDING OUR FREEDOMS.

THEY WEAR FLAG LAPELS TO SHOW SYMBOLIC PATRIOTISM, BUT DO NOT PRACTICE PATRIOTISM BY TAKING CARE OF THOSE WHO DEFEND OUR COUNTRY.

IT CAN EVEN BRING SOMEONE TO CURSE HIS/HER OWN COUNTRY!!!

It's called jingoism. People who wear symbols of nationalism are jingoists, whether they know it or not. Nationalism is a trademark of fascism. Look it up! Peace.

Personally, I chose to show my patriotism in Cua Viet and Phu Bai, and guess what? I don't wear a flag on my lapel or hat.
