Connecticut Newspaper Apologizes For 2006 Lieberman Endorsement

The Day   |  The Editors   |   March 23, 2008 02:56 PM

When The Day endorsed Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman for re-election in November 2006 it was supporting a candidate who demonstrated a history of pragmatic leadership and a willingness to seek bipartisan solutions.

We wonder what happened to that senator.

Sen. Lieberman's open-ended commitment to military involvement in Iraq comes as no surprise. The senator made it clear when running for re-election that was his position. Sen. Lieberman wants the United States military to remain in Iraq until the war is won, whatever that means. It conflicts with this newspaper's position that the time has come for a gradual withdrawal of U.S. forces.

Oh my God! the all wise editor of a newspaper apologizes for endorsing Joe Lieberman! What water was he drinking, him and his editorial board? How come a large number of Democratic primary voters
in Connecticut knew about Joe(I'll run for vice-president; but I will keep my job just in case)Lieberman?
Once again, the press has misread the "the minds of the people" and got it wrong once more. They have eggs on their face and well-deserved. Lieberman goes on, like the energizer bunny doing more and more harm and trailing McWar like a tail; thus sending a signal to 'Jewish" voters that McWar is to be their man. And then we say it is racist when African-Americans, because of Senator Barack Obama's great qualities, vote for him in droves, and it is not labeled as "Ethnic Pride".
Hillary whines about being asked the first question on one debate and she is not called on it.
Bill Clinton questions Barack Obama's patriotism, and they complain he is being compared
to Joe McCarthy. Well you can look it up. Bill Clinton, in his desperation, took a page out of Joe McCarthy's playbook. Have the Clintons no sense of shame, at long last? Enough said.

It's to late now. You let your readers down. Shame on you. You sold out to a man that does not support our country. He is another man like Bush you cant stand watching that you must look away.

And you guys still think the media leans right?

The Democratic party basically ran Sen. Liebermann out on a rail and then this paper wonders why he ran as an independent and he supports John McCain? If the paper was fair and balanced, it would have no problem with Liebermann courting McCain for the VP slot.

But we already knew by the headline that they aren't fair and balanced, didn't we?

No we think they lean toward the money; and the side which butters
their bread.
It is not Lieberman he should pick-it is Hillary since the Clintons
think so highly of him; and he is so patriotic that he was in bed with the
Keating fives and wanted war with Iraq, for the last ten years.
McWar-Clinton '08.

The last line is the best, a nice way of saying "Joe's career is ends on Jan 20, 2009." He becomes completely irrelevant as soon as we get one more Dem Senate seat.

Is there a method for CT citizens to "recall' him? He still has four years to do whatever damage he can come up with.

This question (can LIEberman be recalled) has been asked many times before, and the answer still is the same (unfortunately): NO.

THIS MAN IS A DISGRACE TO THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. THOSE PEOPLE IN CONN WHERE CRAZY. I DON'T SEE WHY THIS MAN JOIN THE REPUKE PARTY.

My husband said he read somewhere that it was mostly Republican's who voted Lieberman in. Which I can believe. He might as well join their traitorous party.

I would like a similar apology from the moronic voters of Connecticut. Joe Lieberman is the Senator from Israel not Connecticut, and is has been plain for all to see for years. Liebeman doesn't even seem care about CT. He has his eyes on an Executive job where he can cause as much havoc in the Muslim world as he can. And if has to be McInsane's nanny to get there, so be it.

Joe Leiberman will help McCain with the Independents in the general election, although he is probably not too well liked by his former Democratic friends...

Lieberman should be recalled by the voters of Connecticut.

The fact that they voted for Lieberman after voting for Lamont puts Connecticut vuters in the same realm as Florida and Ohio when it come to voting SNAFUs. Connecticut should do the right thing and get their turncoat, runamuck, turncoat out of there.

I'm sure there is tons of buyers remorse in Connecticut these days however, now that Lieberman is safely re-elected and can't be recalled I don't think he cares very much how sorry anybody is. He pulled the wool over Connecticuts eyes, they fell for it, we all have to live with it.

Lieberman really cracks me up. How's the push for war with Iran going Joe? Never trust a politician with dual Israeli citizenship.

One question? How badly has LIE-berman hurt this country in money and lives. We are so far in debt over this war that LIE-berman and friends like BUSH strated for personal reasons that it will take MANY generations to get us out of. And the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA was there to back BUSH AND LIE-berman at every stage even NOW they back McCain.

The newspaper's circulation went for Lieberman by 1-5%, and frankly the independent state GOP apparatus raised lots of money for him instead of the Republican candidate, who was terrible. The Lamont grassroots organization was fantastic, and I got canvassed in an area that gets skipped over for everything except tight state representative races. Were it not for the bombardment of pro-Lieberman ads targeted at the low-information voter, Lamont would have won the Senate seat.

The Day was not instrumental in Lieberman's victory. Blame middle and eastern Connecticut and the Hartford Courant and New Haven Register for endorsing Lieberman. Seriously, the Day's endorsement had little bearing on the result.

Also, the Day's editorial board is about three people, and they are more interested in local issues like moving lighthouses and not having natural gas pipelines run through their city.

Lamont was a terrible candidate with no experience(only got in because of his cable business). Lieberman makes sense to people because most understand that terrorism must be stopped. And the Dems....who would have benefited to keep Lieberman because he is such a star...threw him out because he has a mind of his own and does drink the koolaid. Most Connecticut people were laughing to see the Dems pick Lamont over Lieberman...and the final vote showed that. And to blame the press and insulting voters by saying the were uninformed is a joke. Just like with Hillary.....maybe the problem is the "CANDIDATE". That is why he lost to Lieberman. Oh by the way.....where is Lamont today? The Dems threw him out since he was useless to them.

You realize that there is an entire class of voters that don't examine policy issues in depth but vote for people based on whether or not they'd like to have a beer with them? This isn't insulting, it's the truth, and if you find the truth insulting...

Most CT democrats (myself included) were shocked at the Republican candidate's extremely poor showing and blamed most of his election on crossover Republicans happy with his stance on the war in Iraq. Lieberman was a DINO, having a rough relationship with senator Dodd. Also, Lamont was a fantastic candidate and the CT Democratic establishment has embraced him and his grassroots organization, as well as his role in the razor-thin Obama win in Connecticut.

I don't understand. I thought this was the man we were all supposed to want for vice president. I thought everyone who voted for Nader's ticket instead was a traitor to goodness and decency and social justice.

I must have gotten that wrong.

We have the fine folks of Connecticut to thank for returning to office a wrinkled warmonger and blithering hypocrite. To think they preferred him to Ned Lamont!

Why can't voters see such men for who they really are? It shouldn't take the intelligence of a theoretical physicist or cosmologist to see the obvious for what it is.

Lieberman's actions have all the stink of him hoping to land a veep or cabinet appointment from McCain.

Once McCain is dispatched in November, watch just how conciliatory to Democrats he suddenly becomes.
