Clinton Camp: Hillary Misspoke About Her Role In Bosnia

Clinton Camp: Hillary Misspoke About Her Role In Bosnia

March 24, 2008 01:04 PM

An aide to Senator Hillary Clinton acknowledged on Monday that the New York Senator "misspoke" about the immediate dangers she faced when, as first lady, she visited war torn Bosnia.

Howard Wolfson, Clinton's chief spokesperson, said on a conference call that "it is possible in the most recent instance with which she discussed this that she misspoke, with regards to the leaving of the plane." Later, he was more certain: "On one occasion, she misspoke."

But Wolfson insisted that the first lady's visit was indeed perilous, as supported by "contemporaneous accounts" in the press.

In recent weeks, Senator Clinton has sought to bolster her national security and foreign policy credentials by highlighting the role she played in Bosnia.

"We came in under sniper fire," she recently told the press. "There was no greeting ceremony. We ran with our heads down, and were basically told to run to our cars."

The account has been, for better or worse, proven false, both by recent press reports and old video footage that shows the senator greeting a child in a ceremonial procession at the Tuzla airport.

On Monday, Wolfson sought to re-frame the debate by citing various newspaper write-ups from the 1996 trip to support the notion that Clinton was, in fact, in a dangerous situation.

"The trip to Bosnia marks the first time since Roosevelt that a first lady has voyaged to a potential combat zone," he read from a Washington Post story on March 25, 1996. "Other fist ladies have visited troops abroad but never in front-line positions."

But even that newspaper story included evidence directly contradicting Clinton's claims from last week.

"When she arrived in Tuzla," the story continued, "she was greeted by Emina Cicakcic who planted a kiss on each of Mrs. C's cheeks. The 8-year old Muslim girl then read a poem in English."

Asked once more to explain the discrepancies, Wolfson hinted that the senator was referring to sniper fire that was heard, at the time, in the hills surrounding the airport (something the senator herself has written about in her book).

"I think she clearly meant to say that at the event of several days ago," he said.

It"s curious - that so many are up in arms about Hillary Clinton involved in a lie. When it came to lying, her husband was no slouch, either - and our current president has raised the bar to epic heights in the lying category. So Hillary is a liar -- so what? It doesn"t seem to have carried much weight concerning our choices for Commanders-in-Chief. Since when, during the past 30 years or so have we been treated to a truthful president?

The Washington Post and Wolfson need to do a little more research into Eleanor Roosevelt's visits to the troops during WWII.

To be clear, Obama misspoke when he said he won Michigan the morning after Texas and Ohio. When you give specific details of a story and then REPEAT them, its not misspeaking, its a lie, plain and simple. How is it so easy for our electorate to turn a blind eye to reality, I thought that's what the Republicans do.

MISSPOKE??? Yeah, and Eliot Spitzer misspoked.

Hillary's whole experience rap is a lie as is her candidacy. She can't help it. Her supporters on the other hand should have free choice to make up their won minds and are therefore responsible for current situation. More poor decisions fro the Hillary side, Next time read the ingriedients on the kool-aid package unlike Hillary who did not read the NIE in 2002. Blood on her hands and yours.....

The sad truth is that if this event happened, it would have been on every single news channel and the American people would have know. To say that the first lady was shot at and was in a state of crisis from terrorists or revolutionaries and the press would not have been alerted is absurd. It is additionally absurd since the press core was on the plane with her.

I never ever thought I would see Pat Buchanon as an apologist for the Clinton's. He was on MSNBC this morning spinning away trying to come up with some way this could have been mis-interpreted.

new verb for the Dictionary - v to Clinton a) disparaging that which you would have praised if it had gone your way b) mistaking poetry for sniper fire c) ducking for a kiss on the cheek thinking it was sniper fire d) confusing a lie for truth. Henceforth Hillary doesn't misspeak, lie etc she just Clintons

The future commander in chief had better gain control of her tongue. She supported NAFTA and busted unions and was never under fire. She will be another liar in chief like Bush. Totally pathological.

There were no guns in Bosnia. The Serbs just wanted tourists.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:28 AM on 03/25/2008

How do you knowingly embellish an event and call it a "misspeak"? To me it's a LIE.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:11 AM on 03/25/2008

If I were ever under sniper fire, I'm sure I would remember the difference between that and a calm airport greeting with children, hugs, and flowers. What bullshit. If Hillary will lie to us about something so easily disproved, what is she lying about that we can't disprove so easily? Answer: everything.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:05 AM on 03/25/2008

Ah, she misspoke. In detail. In narrative form. For 2.4 minutes.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:35 AM on 03/25/2008

You know - bad thing is I believe that Hillary actually believed what she said in her heart when she said it. Her mind has turned things around and twisted them to make her recall that some how or another she was a hero. This is dangerous folks - this is dillusional. We don't need someone like this as Commander in Chief.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:35 AM on 03/25/2008

"Misspoke?!"

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:16 AM on 03/25/2008

I am sure she "miss=spoke". Those statements seem to be a deliberate attempt to mislead people. If Barack Obama told a story any story and it was proven to be untrue, he would be ridiculed, his candidacy and credibility questioned and there would be panel afte panel, on all the news stations discussing how this "lie" would affect his nomination.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:11 AM on 03/25/2008

"Misspoke". Guess she learned plenty in those Watergate hearings, after all.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:26 AM on 03/25/2008

Nothing that Hillary says or does shocks me anymore. I've just never seen anyone like her.....and she wants to become the president of the United States. God help us all !

I've heard her talk about her "harrowing" Bosnia trip many, many times-She usually includes the part about the White House policy of sending her if it was too dangerous for Bill, implying that she bravely took this trip with full knowledge that it wasn't safe to go there-So, she took along Sinbad, whose account of the trip she contradicted, dismissing him as "a comedian" & the singer Sheryl Crowe, so she might be entertained during her last moments on earth-I'll buy that-What I can't buy is the story (did someone say fairy tale?) that she expected to be putting herself in mortal danger & decided to bring her 15 year old daughter along-Am I to believe that neither she nor Bill would have had a problem with that?!-Oh, please-If that's the case, someone should have reported them to social services for child endangerment-BTW, you can tell in the video taken at the airport that Chelsea did not have a bullet proof vest under her sweater-Hillary simply does not tell the truth about anythng-

SINBAD: 1 - CLINTON: 0

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:50 AM on 03/25/2008

I heard on CNN from Joe Klein that is misspeak is no big deal. He said she was telling war stories and we need to forgive her for that. All I have to say is Obama told a war story like that the media would run the story 24/7 for a week. This was not a war story it was a lie and the video shows that.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:47 AM on 03/25/2008

Even if someone he knew were to tell such a story they'd be going on and on about what a lapse of judgment it is. In fact I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to say that since he served in the Senate with Clinton that this reflects poorly on him.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:25 AM on 03/25/2008

Liar! I'm a Democrat, but if Hillary gets the nomination I'm voting for McCain. Integrity Meter is on, and McCain and Obama come out on top, in that category.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:27 AM on 03/25/2008

Hillary 4 pinocchios?! shame on you!!! shame on you!!!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:15 AM on 03/25/2008

Hell must be getting to freeze over. CNN is covering this!! They are doing so politely, but they ARE covering it indepth!!! Hallelujah!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:06 AM on 03/25/2008

About time. And they need to cut the "misspoke" B.S. If this isn't a lie, what is?? She flat out fabricated this harrowing tale, and I really don't think anyone would be so fuzzy about a near death experience.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:28 AM on 03/25/2008

You Hillary bashers are going way too far. She's an American hero. Back in 'Nam, she and Bill saved John McCain from that prisoner camp. Do you really want to bash them like this? Do you really want to bash them after all they accomplished as the first people on the Moon?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:06 AM on 03/25/2008

I forgot about all that! We are being too hard on them...
