Cheney On 4,000 Dead Americans: They Volunteered

Cheney On 4,000 Dead Americans: They Volunteered

ABC News   |   March 24, 2008 01:49 PM

Wrapping up a nine-day overseas trip to Iraq, Vice President Dick Cheney was asked, in an exclusive interview with ABC News, about the effect on the nation of today's grim milestone of at least 4,000 U.S. deaths over the five-year Iraq war.

Noting the burden placed on military families, the Vice President said the biggest burden is carried by President Bush, and reminded ABC news that the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan volunteered for duty.

Well, the synopsis of this story is very biased against Cheney, saying he "...reminded ABC news that the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan volunteered for duty." That isn't exactly the way the interview went. BUT since I despise this man's arrogance, ruthlessness and corruption, I'll let it go. This ratbastiid must have the goods on a lot of people in Congress, because by all rights, he should have been retired long ago. Martha Raddatz is a good reporter--ladylike but tough--and she had some courage to ask him the questions about redeployments.

Isn't it ironic that the darlings of the radical religious right (Bush,Cheney) say and do such things that are unAmerican and at odds with democracy; not to mention heartless. It speaks volumes about the base of the Republican party. God help us all if McCain manages to win the white house.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:32 PM on 03/27/2008

McCain can only win, if as with the elections Bush won... many democrats decide to vote for him. We will only win when we stop fighting amongst ourselves. There is another thread going right now congratulating Bill Maher for his delightful trashing of Catholics. Who do you suppose Irish, Hispanic and Italians usually vote for and what church do you think they go to on Sunday?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:28 PM on 03/28/2008

They volunteered WOW what an answer that let's everyone off the hook! This man not only didn't volunteer when it was his time but he went for 5 deferments when there was a draft.
His saying they volunteer is why we need a draft. This thing about laying down your life for a country should go for everyone, most of them volunteer to protect our country not ruin some other country.
These volunteers aren't even being taken care of the way they should fighting the military system and the VA system from the moment they are of no use to the military anymore. Shame, shame on this country.

Every time Georgy and Dick speak, they make me feel so ashamed to be an American.

Whenever I start feeling proud to be an American, I come to Huffingtonpost and read the comments for a few minutes. After I've read a few comments I realize that you guys are right. We have a hell of a lot to be ashamed of. Our leader is a moron, we travel the world abusing people and stealing their oil. We are bastards. It just makes me sick. I wish I was a Canadian.

I'm sorry... I am feeling so damned ashamed of myself I just can't type anymore.

Sometimes I feel pity for American people. Sometimes...Most of the time I am either shocked or enraged to indifference of American public to crimes of current administration and its partners in MSM and defence/oil industry...Can't you recognize silent contempt , casual dismissive attitude of Cheney towards public and its principles , everything this country based upon or stood up for ? Dick reminds me narrow minded ignorant and fanatic Nazi leaders of WWII. "So" ? , "They volunteeered" MY GOD !! Where are the people ? Where is outrage , protests , organization and pressure towards Washington ? Are you Americans just too well fed , comfortable and lazy besides being appering Patriotic to care anything else ? People are being murdered in your name in Iraq ! ( I am not blaming troops. When you send a an armed trained fighter to be meanest kid on block in a foreign land he does so. He mostly hurts innocents because he is trained to do so ) Your economy is in shambles. Your health care and social security almost non existent. You lost almost all of your creditentials in international community and lost respect and confidence of your allies. Dubya thinks one day history will justify him. That is mentality of Adolf Hitler ! I think one day historians would look back and shake their heads "How the hell did people of one of the most richest and respected nation of the earth elected these people and allowed this to

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:36 PM on 03/26/2008

Our economy is in shambles relatively often. However, it consistently outperforms everyone else's. We don't like Bush but he's our own home grown fool and we haven't really noticed many freakin Winston Churchills or Ghandis out there partner. We see mostly despots, criminals and communists. The rest are second rate, used-to-be powers, that are jealous and angry that a bunch of course, ignorant bastards like us RULE.

Granted, if you are addressing your comments to the cappuccino crowd in San Fransisco or the plentiful supply of self-loathing fools on this thread... well, then you'll get plenty of agreement. In fact, they'll tell you horrible stuff about their own country that you hadn't even thought of.

As for getting involved in places like Iraq and Bosnia and Europe... it pisses most of us off when we see your enlightened leaders gassing, murdering and burying their own people in open pits by the tens of thousands (or millions).

Most people in this country, when they see something real bad happening, step in. Now granted there are plenty here who can find a thousand reasons to look the other way. They mostly wear loafers and drink cappuccino and are relentless at pointing out what idiots those who stepped in are. That;s OK though. It's always been that way. Anyway, we just ignore them and you.

They were conned, cheated and lied to. Thier deaths were covered up, autopsies falsified, bodies embalmed to cover up the evidence. In at least two cases this has been found to be fact. Cheney, you belong behind bars. Your sorry behind is headed that way if I get the findings I am going after about how these men and women really died. I am not going to eat the cookie and just go away, I am not going to drink the kool aide and not ask why? You may think you are smart, but pal, you badly underestimate those of us who are going after the truth about the war, how our troops are really dying and the actual numbers of dead soldiers. Some of the soldiers were creamated before the bodies could be examined by an ME. Fact. Cheney, that smerk won't be on your face after the truth comes out.

Cheney is heartless and a poor excuse for a human being.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:05 AM on 03/26/2008

Yes George jr. is as evil as his mentor" Meatgrinder" Cheney but both of them pale next to mild manered Bush Sr. This man is a genious at presenting a public image and "CYAing" but history will show that he was a bane on America and a one man orginized crime wave.
That oh so sweet grandmotherly wife of his makes Ma Barker look like a Girl Scout mom.
George Jr. is her spawn and a product of her upbringing.
And these are the nicesest things I can say here about the Bush crime family.

This is nothing new. Madeline Albright said much the same when soldiers complained about the poor conditions they endured during the Balkan's campaign: what are they complaining about? They volunteered.
The all-volunteer force, despite its vocal proponents, ends up with soldiers being treated like mercenaries. After all, the only way you can keep people in the military today is to pay them at a rate roughly equivalent to what they would earn on the outside and give them a cushy benefits package. Since they volunteered, and since they are being well-compensated, why not treat them as expendable assets and dismiss any complaints as whining.
Dick Cheney may be a horrible excuse for a human being, but his view of the troops is echoed by whoever is in power.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:46 PM on 03/25/2008

It might be worth it all if our military were in fact compensated "like" mercenaries. Check out Blackwater. Ask veterans who have been cast aside because they are no longer of any value to the "cause," about benefits. If they come home with all their limbs attached, they get to go back to see if they can do it again. Fight until you lose your life or limbs. It would be honorable if these guys were truly fighting to save America and not just oil for the wealthy. It would be more honorable if we took care of them when they come home broken into pieces. My son spent 22 years in the military and I thank God every day that he is out of harm's way.

Here's a challenge to the dems: Forget Bush, use Cheney against McCain. Do the morph thing on video with McCain turning into Cheney. Do a top ten list of the stupid things he's said and done. (Like shooting a friend in the face.) If McCain wins anyway, it's safe to say America The Beautiful is dead.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:54 PM on 03/25/2008

They volunteered to serve their country, yes. Can I equate that with volunteering to die? Um, no. There's laws about that, ask Dr. Jack- they locked him up for it.

But as other posters have noted, at least a few prior administrations have exercised restraint in putting American lives in harm's way. Our government's implied promise has ALWAYS been that military action would ONLY be done AS A LAST RESORT to protect our NATIONAL interest (as opposed to the interests of a few corporations that lobby very actively and contribute very heavily to national political campaigns), and not in lieu of, or without first attempting diplomatic means to resolve our differences.

The UN was involved in the first Gulf War, when Iraq invaded Kuwait. Then, there actually was a respected world order that was acknowledged, consulted, participated in and approved of actions taken in concert against a ruthless, power-hungry dictator that threatened world peace. This time around, that ruthless, power hungry dictator was George Bush. And anyone that answers to the current Commander in Chief is nothing more than lowly cannon fodder, sent into battle for extended periods beyond what they had agreed to do, poorly instructed and even less protected. And he will accomplish his inarticulately described objective of "victory" over their dead bodies.

After all, that's what they're there for, isn't it?

What do you mean, Ronald Reagan wasn't a real cowboy? I saw him play one on TV!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:12 PM on 03/25/2008

Sure they did...next question?

How many of the nearly 1.2 million Iraqi dead volunteered to die?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:33 PM on 03/25/2008

Has there ever been a photograph of Cheney that prompts a greater urge to kick the stupid out of him?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:55 PM on 03/25/2008

As the past 8 years has proved, basic human emotions and truths, such as empathy, kindness, desire for the greater good, honesty with oneself, guilt DO NOT EXIST in Bush, nor Cheney. They are sadists who make some Dictators seem benevolent. And oh yeah, they are responsible for the deaths of 1/2 million human beings. (Cheney makes Robert Mugabe look like a saint.)

And people react in horror when a black preacher has the temerity to say "God Damn America!" I'm with you Rev. Wright, until we can remove the greed that poisons our great country.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:43 AM on 03/25/2008

No one ever comments on the entire sermon do they. "...as long as she thinks she is GOD..." follows "God Damn America". And they don't like to talk about the white preachers who immediately attacked our morals at 9/11. You really don't have to be a liberal to know that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Just live your life, pay attention and it will smack you in the face. Have a good day!

Yeah!! I'm with you! Tonight it was reported he refers to Italians as "Garlic Nose"
I think we should all be proud of this man for speaking the truth. I always wanted to call Italians Garlic Nose but just didn't have the courage until now.

Another thing too. I have known all along that the government was running the KKK and that many of my fellow whitey's have been trying to infect black people with AIDS.

I am so proud that Rev Wright brought this out into the open and I want as many of my progressive friends to associate with and embrace these beliefs in time for the elections in November.

I just know that once America knows what we stand for, they will flock to the polls in November and vote for a democrat. Get the word out!

Me? I'm going to start by talking to all my Italian relatives.

If people would simply boycott the military and NOT volunteer, the war would be over.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:23 AM on 03/25/2008

Most of the "volunteers" I know are there because they can't find a job elsewhere and have families to support. Their jobs have all gone overseas. At least when there was a draft everyone had an equal chance of being killed.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:01 PM on 03/25/2008

Good grief! What silly drivel

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:21 AM on 03/27/2008

That would be playing right in to the hands of those who want to privatize the military. We're half way there already.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:10 PM on 03/25/2008

Since that's not gonna happen, there's an alternate for those who don't want to undergo more stop loss faux draft tours...declare that they're gay. That gets you a ticket home. And my way of addressing the dishonor is to say that the soldiers may have gone with honor, but that doesn't mean they were sent with honor...they were not. They were sent as fodder for the financial portfolio's of people who are already wealthy beyond any rational human beings wildest dreams. Which is to say, all they want is more, and if they have to send US troops into a meat grinder to get more, that's what they do, and have done. Goddamn them all.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:41 PM on 03/25/2008

of course, our military is voluntary, but if anyone knows anyone in the military, they are not saying that they volunteered to go to Iraq...not the first, second, and especially not the third and fourth tours! What happened to the day when our elected officials were also expert soldiers that lead the military with personal experience, bravery, and pride. is that SO much to ask?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:38 AM on 03/25/2008

Well, yeah. Actually, it is.

And don't expect to get that kind of leadership out of John McCain either. There's a guy who'll keep this thing going on inexorably because he's done his duty, damn it, and they're gonna do theirs, too. Or else! We'll bring peace to the Middle East if it kills 'em!

You want to support the troops?
then BRING THEM HOME. The sooner the better. The only thing they'll accomplish extending our (suicide) mission in Afghiranaquistan is adding their own names to the deaths and casualties.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:26 PM on 03/25/2008

AND let's not forget that many of our soldiers killed in Iraq volunteered not to be soldiers at all, but for the NATIONAL GUARD! They wanted to serve our country in support of the aftermaths of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina or to defend our soil against aggressors trying to attack us within our shores. When they volunteered, they had no idea that the prez and veep would have the hubris to use and abuse them this way. They had a trust in this country to do the right thing and that naivete was stomped on by the Bush and Cheney greed. These "volunteers", as Cheney so cavalierly puts it, didn't volunteer for Iraq or Afghanistan at all. The sheer arrogance of Cheney to state that the "biggest burden" is borne by Bush. What a statement! Responsibility, yes. Burden? Send the Bush twins and the Cheney demon spawn to the front lines, then Bush and Cheney will begin to know the meaning of "burden" . Until then, Cheney shut the ____ up.
