LOS GATOS, Calif. — Online DVD rental leader Netflix Inc. is suffering a technology breakdown that's knocked out its Web site, inconveniencing its 7.5 million subscribers.

The outage could mean some customers will have to wait longer than usual for their next rentals.

Company spokesman Steve Swasey says the trouble blocked access to Netflix's Web site about 7 a.m. PDT Monday. The site was still down in the afternoon.

Swasey says DVDs that normally would have been mailed Monday may not go out until Tuesday because the problem also has hobbled some Netflix distribution centers.

Netflix is based in Los Gatos.

If everything were run as smartly and efficiently as Netflix, the world wouldn't have much to complain about . Great company to do business with.

LOS GATOS!!!!!! I guess it's difficult to find competent computer people there, huh??
I can't believe they're still in business with the serial problems I read about.

It did "inconvenience" me in that I didn't get to immediately add a film to my que at the exact time I wanted to, but Netflix is one of the greatest services the internet brought into my life so it will take much more than a single day of no access to make me feel negatively towards them. It was working just fine this morning and that was good enough for me.

My wife and I started a Netflix account several months ago, and I've been amazed by the design of their distribution system. We place a return in a mailbox, get emailed announcement of its receipt and outgoing replacement the next day, and the day after that we have the new movie. We live in Columbus, Ohio, which I have always thought to be a comfortable and distinctly non-major city.

This week was different, however. We mailed a return late last week, and heard nothing from Netflix until today... This story provides an explanation.

This is not a complaint, by the way. We don't have much time for movies, so we're waiting breathlessly for the the next one. Netflix is an excellent middle ground between a two-miles-distant Blockbuster and our beloved (but long lost) neighborhood video rental shop.

Netflix gives it's users a lot for the money -- mail and unlimited online. I've been a customer for four years, and this is the first bump in the road. That's not a bad record!

Interesting that this states the site is down "in the afternoon" when it's only 4 minutes past noon. I think AP sources are in cahoots with Blockbuster, just as they are with Republicans.

If all things in this country ran as well as Netflix, we wouldn't need grumpy blogs like Huffpost. LOL
