Recession Hits Hollywood

The wave of euphoria that swept over Hollywood following the end of the WGA strike has been replaced by a whole new set of emotions: anxiety, depression, fear, nervousness -- and anger.

One month after scribes put down their pickets, a March malaise has set in, with folks in town wondering when -- or if -- things will get back to "normal."

There are significantly fewer TV pilots, budgets for series are being cut back, feature films are being put on hold in fear of a SAG walkout, and the shifts in the TV and film skeds have meant either accelerated workloads or prolonged unemployment.

And all this is occurring as everyone is feeling the pinch of an overall economy that's in or heading into recession.

Hollywood hurting? Awwww, lets see. Inane, garbage products, based on toilet humor, slapstick, or wait, there's the slasher movies, yeah I'm put down my $10 so I can be insulted while I spent another $10 on a small popcorn and a small soda. Oh, but then theres the Tee Vee. Ahhhh, reality shows (who needs writers?), American Idiots, rahashed comedy's, murder shows, I'm sorry, why am I wasting my time here? Oh, that's right Hollywood needs the money. Thank God there's the Internet, thank God I learned how to read.

As the economy continues to squeeze the average consumer, fewer people will be going to the movie theaters, with their overpriced popcorn, candy bars and soft drinks. People will be cutting back on their cable bills or canceling cable service altogether. It's not a good time for Hollywood. Even Las Vegas will have to adjust as fewer people will be able to afford $200 tickets for big name acts at Caesar's Palace. Las Vegas seems to be at or near the top of every foreclosure list I see in the media nowadays, with the blue collar suburbs (Inland Empire) of LA also high up in the lists.

the only silver lining to the recession is that perhaps more people will abandon the gaudy, gangsta culture. No not the hip hop kids, the wall street kids.

And, I believe CA is in the same mess it was in when some dimbulbs decided to recall Gray Davis.
Are you going to recall Arnold too? You should. Hopefully you were not stupid enough to vote for him in the first place. You get what you pay for.

Many Californians are thinking just what you are.
The energy crisis was not Gray Davis' baby.
It was the crooked energy companies out of
Texas that were over charging the State.
The whole ploy to recall was the Republican
idiots out of San Diego County.

People do earn more money in LA than most places in America, but its relative.
Rent out here costs more and so does gas.
Medium grade gas is $4 a gallon at almost every LA gas station.

Bottom line is, it's just mindless entertainment that we really can live without. Go to the library and get an interesting book. It will stay with you a lot longer then the crap on T.V.

According to John Kingman, owner of Beverly Hills Imports, "Things are bad. Studio heads, directors and hi-profile actors have begun trading their Ferrari's and Bentleys in after three years instead of just two. It's just killing us."

Is this really a surprise to anyone? Even if the economy was booming, this was going to be the result of the WGA strike. All the writers really did was show the studios how expendable they are by forcing the studios to figure out ways to keep ratings up without writers. Of course this was going to be the result.

Blame the writers. Wriiiiiiittttte! err, Riiiigggghhhttt.

Yeah. Considering the entire article is about the slow ramp up after the writer's strike, why would they possibly be connected. *snicker*.

California's obscene wealth will see it through Armageddon. Yes, it's that obscene, and it has really little to do with entertainment now.

Gee Whizz.........I'm a Californian......and, after living here for 40+ years, I have yet to see any of that "obscene" wealth you mention. A very, very small percentage of our entire population may have reached that status but the majority of hard working Californians have not. So.....I'd be a bit more careful with this kind of "generalization" !

You have no idea what the h**l you are talking about,California economy is in th sh**ter, the housing and strike dealt a major blow to Calif ,the so called obscene wealth you are talking about very tint fraction of the Calif population, the majority are middle to lower incomeand the high cost of living in this state all it takes is a burp in the economy for it to go spiraling downward and that is happening now
