Photos show that a shot fired from a US Airways pilot's pistol blasted a small hole through the cockpit wall of a plane that landed in North Carolina.

The photos obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press show a small entry hole in the lower side of the cockpit wall and a small exit hole on the exterior below the cockpit window.

The AP described the photos and the bullet hole to US Airways spokesman Phil Gee, who said "they sound authentic."

The whole FFDO program makes no sense at all. Pilots are only allowed to remove the gun from its holster while the cockpit door is closed and locked. The titanium, bullet-proof cockpit door, that is. They must stow the weapon when the door is open, like when one pilot goes to the lav or they're served meals or drinks. Which, of course, would be the time for crazies and would-be terrorists to breach the cockpit.
This is just another TSA ploy designed to make those of below-average intelligence feel safer.
I work for US Airways. While there are some wonderful pilots out there, there are also quite a few cowboys that take their second amendment rights WAY too seriously.
I say, leave law enforcement to the professionals. When I get on a plane, I expect the pilot to fly and land safely, not combat the international forces of darkness.

After 911, the right-wing NRA crowd pushed through this "pilots must have guns" crap. Are any of the dems now trying to repeal this stupid %$^#????? or are they busy enabling the rethugs?

Guns don't kill people; holes in planes kill people!

"Stupid plane. You're just lucky you're not a terrorist."

I feel so much safer now that the people the government trusts are the ones who are attacking planes.

US Air scares me.

I've flown with several FFDOs. I've had to chew one or two of them out for swinging the muzzle in my direction while they were holstering the weapon. I had a hunch this was going to happen sooner or later.

Isn't it grand that the first shot fired by a pilot was a mistake? They were very lucky that they weren't at cruising altitude.

Were they at the ramp or taxiing or ? This is really a curiosity to me. Does anyone know more?

It takes a real boob to be able to fire a pistol accidentally. Most modern firearms will not fire unless there is constant pressure on the trigger because of the hammer block. Could this be something other than an accident? Maybe an intentional act of incompetence, maybe.
gons do not fire themselves. They are inanimate objects manipulated by humans.
