The Rise Of

The Rise Of "Green-Collar" Jobs

EVERYONE knows what blue-collar and white-collar jobs are, but now a job of another hue -- green -- has entered the lexicon.

Presidential candidates talk about the promise of "green collar" jobs -- an economy with millions of workers installing solar panels, weatherizing homes, brewing biofuels, building hybrid cars and erecting giant wind turbines. Labor unions view these new jobs as replacements for positions lost to overseas manufacturing and outsourcing. Urban groups view training in green jobs as a route out of poverty. And environmentalists say they are crucial to combating climate change.

Do I think we'll see lots of "green collar" jobs? When we face competition from vastly lower wage rate and environmentally unregulated nations? Judge for yourself.

From http://www.planetark.org/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/40477/story.htm dated February 23rd, 2007:

"Despite the potential for a boom in solar energy use, experts say the United States is falling behind in manufacturing solar panels.

Foreign producers are growing in part due to government subsidies and, in the case of China, lower manufacturing costs.

The US share of global panel construction has fallen from 20-25 percent about four years ago to about 8 percent now, while Japan and Germany have increased their output. China has increased its market share from about 1 percent four years ago to 8 percent now."

I don't care - or rather the corporations don't care - if having a bunch of "green collar" jobs would be good for our nation and the people of our nation.

The corporations can make more money by manufacturing offshore, and that is where they will go. They NEVER let such quaint concepts as "loyalty" and "patriotism" stand between them and money when they don't have to.

"A chunk of Antarctic ice about seven times the size of Manhattan suddenly collapsed, putting an even greater portion of glacial ice at risk, scientists said Tuesday. [I add, "yesterday".]

Satellite images show the runaway disintegration of a 160-square-mile chunk in western Antarctica, which started Feb. 28. It was the edge of the Wilkins ice shelf and has been there for hundreds, maybe 1,500 years.

This is the result of global warming, said British Antarctic Survey scientist David Vaughan."

Interesting - the link you posted was created (assuming the date can be trusted) just the day before you posted your comment as "PacificGatePost", it is totally uncorroborated by supporting citations, it appears on a blog with your HuffPo handle embedded in it's name, and the blog in question presents no perspectives that could be considered to be anything other than right-wing "It is our right to rape the planet!" dogma.

I do believe I'll pass on just accepting it as factual data.
