SAN FRANCISCO — After nearly 19 years of marriage, Robin Williams and his wife are getting divorced.

Marsha Garces Williams filed a petition for dissolution of marriage on March 21 in San Francisco Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences.

The two met when Garces Williams worked as a nanny for Williams' son Zachary, whom he had with his previous wife, Valerie Valardi.

Robin and Garces Williams also have two children together, Zelda and Cody.

Williams, 56, won an Academy Award for his role in the film "Good Will Hunting." He also starred in the 1980s sitcom "Mork & Mindy," and has acted in a number of movies including "Dead Poets Society" and "Patch Adams."

Williams' agent Mara Buxbaum confirmed that the couple is splitting, but had no further comment. An attorney for his estranged wife would not comment on the case.

I've been married for 38 years to a wonderful man who has only a minor personality flaw, who is at work at the same job every day, and he is at home every night with me. We have a daughter and a granddaughter whom we love.
This couple has been separated probably more than half a year, every year, due to appearances and work on films, have gone through alcohol and emotional problems we will never experience, and yet you can say what is wrong and place the blame. Not good. The divorce rate in this country began to advance when everything became instant and disposable. This should not apply to humans, however 19 years is a pretty long time to try when the problems seem insurmountable. I hope they both go on to have peaceful lives. And for the record, Robin Williams is a comic genius and an improvisatory wizard.

I think Robin Williams is pretty funny (but also tremendously egotistical and the epitome of a camera hog). That said, he left his first wife for the current one when she was his kid's nanny. That never sat well with me. I have no sympathy for either of them.

I saw Robin perform 20 years ago when I was 9 months pregnant with my daughter. I had a front row seat and never have laughed so hard in my life. He kept looking at me worrying I would pop before his set was over. Flash forward and now he is the one who needs to be patted and told to relax, all will be ok. Divorce sucks, no two ways about it. I just wish both of them peace, and sannity, in a difficult time. It couldn't have happened to two nicer people.

God Bless Robin Williams. He used to have his friends, Chris and Dana Reeeve to lean on. my advice to him is do compassionate things and volunteer even more. Get into a different kind oflove. put effort into, your kids. go positive.

He told this joke in THE ARISTOCRATS: Rabbi walks into a bar with a duck on his head. Bartender asks "where'd you get that?" The duck says "Brooklyn, they've got hundreds of them!"

Marsha Williams has monumental stamina indeed. Imagine 19 years with a bipolar, alcoholic, intimacy averse, narcisistic, frightened man who is running as fast as he can. He's as funny as a heart attack and as painful to watch.

Robin Williams is the funniest American comedian alive. "HE has monumental stamina." A brilliant crazy satirst ......Marsha Williams had a great 19 years. I am sorry for her loss. Hang in there Robin...You are the greatest.

Sad news, I'm sure. Leave them alone. Let them work out their personal tragedy in peace.

Anyone else notice how Hollywood marriages usually end when a celebrity's career and popularity starts to wind down.

He still can be considered one of the top comedians of our generation (even if his latest movie rolls weren't very good).

I think she filed b/c he is GAY!

Anyone agree with me?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:29 PM on 03/27/2008

Robin isn't gay. I think someone who is that intense, who is that creative, hyper, is someone whom you have to know how to deal with. Marsha dealt with his temper tantrums, ego, ups and downs. That wasn't easy. It became a matter of two people who loved one another deeply, but wanted thier space. Space is a great thing until it becomes, good lord, look at what I am not having to deal with, what I can do alone. It happens to the best of marriages. There are no bad guys in a marriage, it takes two to make them and two to make them fall apart. But gay? Oh hell no. He played one but likes the ladies.

Love can never work, when it's turned into a possession. That's what marriage does.

Now it will become about who has what, who is entitled to what, who will get what.

As long as we reward divorce marriage will decline.

Robin Williams was banging the babysitter, just like he did in "World According To Garp" and ended his first 10 year marriage. It's too bad he didn't learn anything from that role. Still, he's very talented and divorce is shitty for everyone, so good luck to all parties.

Williams is an acceptable actor, excellent impersonator, and about as funny as Max von Sydow. I hope the best for him, his ex, and his family.

Actually, Max von Sydow can be rather funny.

Timmy,

that you fail to comprehend Robin Williams' brand of comedy, speaks volumes about your faculties.

Not good.

What's to comprehend?
He's been telling the same dick jokes for 30 years...
He just changes the accent and everyone falls down blinded by his brilliance...
Or not.

No one ever considers that until they are fighting over money. Then she will invoke the name of the children as long as it will help her get more money out of him. LIke most, she will say he is evil, want to stop him from seeing his kids, try to get as much money as she can out of him, and as soon as its all over, she will be calling to dump the kids off at his place because she wants to go hump someone.

One thing that would have bothered me a little bit, though. I like men with some body hair, but come on, there is a limit.

Don't beat up on my favorite comedian! I agree with mrcontinental. Robin Williams is one of the most phenomenally talented comics ever. He cracks me up.

Not only that, but he's never dealt in insults. Only a gentle genius could step around the mud flats where most stand-ups spend their careers.

I agree.....Love that "gentle genius"....most comedians could not comprehend his talent .Or have the stamina to take off as he so brilliantly does. And without hesitation he moves from the sublime to the..............

Marriage is a barbaric holdover from primitive religious dogma. Remember: the ten commandments were written by the rich to control the poor. Let's all get divorced for pete's sake!

you haven't thought about this have you?

marriage is a civic institution; not religious.

Sorry about the personal troubles, but this gives me a chance to say what an untalented load this guy really is. I am amazed at the number of people who go ga-ga over his boring act. He has zero range. Maybe that's what she finally caught on to.

Its funny that you use the word "stinker" because I was listening to the ready this morning, and they said that one of the reasons why Marsha is filing for divorce is because of Robin Williams' stinkiness. Apparently he sweats so much that he can be smelled from far far away. I am NOT making this up it was on WPLJ in N.Y. this morning.

Why can't people stay married? The trouble and the cost of so many people getting divorced reverberates economically and emotionally all through society. Why be married in the first place?

He was funny, I almost split in two at his older stuff. But bipolars tend to burn themselves out.
The death of the arguably greatest comedian of all time, Richard Pryor, whom he had been helping, was most likely the catalyst for going back to the bottle; anger, depression, bitterness (seeing his friend waste away).

It is a sad thing ...divorce. I myself am in the process of getting one. It is shame that almost 62% of couples in this country get a divorse. It is like the altimate answer to all negotiation. In my opinion, it is a lack og God and commmitment in our lives, although the statistics is same for the church going couples as well. Is it better to have a furune and be alone, or have very little and be happy and have a family ?. I wish I had spent more time with my family within the last 30 years when I was married.
hang in there Robin, ...there will be some lonely times ahead. I found out that going to church and getting to know God and relying on him for comfort, was the best medicine for me.
