Hillary\'s Approval Rating Plummets In NBC/WSJ Poll

Hillary's Approval Rating Plummets In NBC/WSJ Poll

MSNBC   |  Chuck Todd   |   March 26, 2008 07:17 PM

As expected, one of the two major Democratic candidates saw a downturn in the latest NBC/WSJ poll, but it's not the candidate that you think. Hillary Clinton is sporting the lowest personal ratings of the campaign. Moreover, her 37% positive rating is the lowest the NBC/WSJ poll has recorded since March 2001, two months after she was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York.

The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday this week by Hart-McInturff and surveyed 700 registered voters, which gives the poll a margin of error of +/- 3.7%. In addition, we oversampled African-Americans in order to get a more reliable cross-tab on many of the questions we asked in this poll regarding Sen. Barack Obama's speech on race and overall response to last week's Rev. Jeremiah Wright dustup.

Quite a sight, watching most of the MSM (and, it seems, HuffPo), all holding hands in a big circle and dancing a jig. Almost explains why they can't find the time to do any serious, objective reporting.

Do you think the next debate will feature Hillary leaping ont Barack and gnawing on his ear or Bill with a baseball bat chasing Barack around the stage? LOL

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:08 PM on 03/28/2008

Hillary is pretty much burning out her supports. Eventually only smoldering coals will remain.

Oh, this is an NBC/WSJ conducted poll. Need I say more. That's why it only appears here on the HUFF post.

Don't make me laugh. It cannot be credible.

Okay, then...how do you feel about Gallup?

Friday, March 28, 2008 13:50 EDT
A big lead for Obama in new Gallup poll
National tracking polls that are updated daily aren't the sternest stuff to hang a presidential campaign's future on, but the latest numbers from Gallup are hard to ignore. Today's report shows Obama with a 50 to 42 percent lead over Clinton. That is not only his best performance since the Wright controversy blew up but also ties his biggest lead ever in the Gallup poll daily tracking program.

The trend line: Tuesday: 47-45; Wednesday: 47-46; Thursday: 48-44; Friday: 50-42.

From Gallup:

Obama's current 8-point advantage ties his largest lead of the Gallup Poll Daily tracking program, along with a 50 percent to 42 percent showing in Feb. 28-March 1 polling. Obama clearly has weathered the Wright storm, while the dark clouds have shifted to Clinton over whether she has exaggerated her foreign policy credentials. This week she has had to defend her repeated claim that she came under sniper fire while visiting Bosnia as first lady, which news video clearly disputed.

Obama fans will credit the momentum shift to his speech on race, while cynics may shrug and dub him the new Teflon Man. Whatever the case, this hasn't been Hillary Clinton's best week.

Hillary Clinton is one of the most shameless people. Hillary Clinton appeared on NBC's Dateline and told viewers of a heartbreaking story about how her daughter Chelsea had cheated death that morning of Sept. 11th.

"She had gone on what she thought would be a great jog," Hillary Clinton explained. "She was going down to Battery Park, she was going to go around the towers. She was going to get a cup of coffee and - that's when the plane hit!"

Apparently Hillary Clinton's tragic tale of Chelseas near death experience was a big hit with the media. "At that moment, she was not just a Senator, but a concerned parent," TODAY show's Katie Couric told viewers.

Hillary Clinton's shameless exploit wasn't reported in the media when it was contradicted by Chelseas own take of that morning of Sept. 11th. After it was clearly contradicted by her own daughter, Hillary and the media didn't touch the story any longer. Chelsea Clinton wrote about her own experience in a Talk Magazine article.

Chelsea's story was simple: she did not mention any morning jog, she did not mention plans to go to Battery Park near the World Trade Center Towers, only to be stopped by a coffee break. In fact, Chelsea writes that she was at her friend's apartment on Park Avenue South miles from Ground Zero when she learned of the attacks!

"I stared senselessly at the television," Chelsea writes.

Lying about being in harms way in a combat zone, is the BIG lie. She is unfit to serve, and based on her lie couldn't serve as a private in the Army, least Commander and Chief. He she wanted to make such claims, she should have enlisted and served. The three gentlemen in my American Legion that were Hillary supporters wouldn't vote for her now, under duress. Good job Hillary, we Republicans couldn't ask for a better ally. See you in November, after you steal the nomination.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:12 PM on 03/27/2008

Its tragic to watch how the democrats are destroying one another. This country does need change from the Bush policies of the last 8 years but it looks increasingly likely that whoever emerges from this democratic blood bath will be so damaged that they are unelectable. I put more of the blame for this on Hillary than I do Obama--but that doesn't mean he's without blame. The democratic party is divided with older, blue collar workers for Hillary and young, White collar and african american voters for Obama. I don't see either of them being able to get sufficient numbers of the others constituency to put together a coalition that can beat the republicans in November. I know it's still early, but we're looking at 2+ months of this sniping back and forth. The only way Hillary can win is to make Obama unelectable so Superdelegates step in and give her the nomination. But by doing that, the democrats will lose the most reliable voting block -- African Americans. It seemed impossible a few months ago but the Dems have found a way to blow a sure thing....

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:45 PM on 03/27/2008

How do spell "amateur". A sample size of 700 is woefully inadequate, plus over-sampling Blacks is obviously going to WAY overstate Hillary's negatives.

My personal feeling is that Obama's ratings went down this week, not Hillary's. Despite her BosniaLie. OprahBoma probably greased some gears with a little cash.

For the last couple days, the media has been absolutely FAWNING over Obama. First of all, Obama went thru a whole confession and interrogation on Rezko and nobody said ANYTHING about it!!! Unreal. But Hillary tells a white lie/embellishment on her Bosnia trip, which WAS to a war zone, and it makes front-page news and 8 million blogs.

That's as bad as Saturday Night Live.

I would like to hear about what came down about Rezko. How come none of the media nitwits are talking about that? Why doesn't Keith OlberbamaMan do a special excoriating Obama (hahahaha, that will be the day!). I guess we just have to wait for Bill O. to do the deed.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:12 PM on 03/27/2008

It is because she was swiftboated in her sniper story, Same as why McCain is leading Barack after Wright was swiftboated for his statements .

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:58 PM on 03/27/2008

Swift boated with her own lie? You need to Google or Wiki the definition of "Swift Boating".

Deflect, distract, distort... politics as usual from the Bush/Clinton oligarchy.

If you've ever been in a life and death situation, you don't forget what happened. Not in years, not in your lifetime.

Sen. Clinton says she misspoke, and that she was sleep deprived, (so much for the 3am phone call!)
So, did she really misspeak four times since December?

Was she sleep deprived on each occasion?

Does she really believe when it's too dangerous to send in the president, send in the first lady, and the first couples only child? Can anyone take her seriously after that verbal fart?

Why, with all the reporters on the tarmac, (some of the same ones following the campaign, no doubt), did it take till now to hear the real story of what happened that day? Is it just more of that pro-Obama media bias?

Is it really okay for a woman to lie about her war experiences in a national campaign, but not a man?
When will the "L" word be used to describe her self aggrandizement? You know, liar.

She lied. Misspoke is when you forget the details of an event, you were at. Like what you ate. "When we went to Vincent's Clam Bar, I had lasagna." "No, you had the ravioli." That's misspeaking.
She did not "misspeak," 4 times.

But then, calling a Clinton a liar is not newsworthy. Hell it's a cottage industry. And, when it comes down to it, whether or not she is "a" liar, all depends on what your definition of "a" is.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:48 PM on 03/27/2008

Sen. Clinton exaggerated re. Bosnia. Here are some EXAGGERATIONS from Sen. Obama. Sen. Obama consistently and falsely claims he was a law professor. He gave lectures there. Obama claimed credit for nuclear leak legislation that never passed. Obama "misspoke" when he claimed he was conceived because of Selma. He actually was born four years before the confrontation in Selma. (New York Times,3/5/07. Chicago Tribune: Obama's assertion that nobody had indications Rezko was engaging in wrongdoing 'strains credulity'.Tribune stories linked Rezko to questionable fundraising for Gov. Rod Blagojevich in 2004, more than a year before Sen. Obama and Tony Rezko entered into a real estate agreement. Sen. Obama said he wouldn't allow any lobbyists to work in his White House, but a plan written by him says the opposite. He has said he doesn't accept donations from corp. but in an NBC debate Sen. Gravel challenged him and he admitted the donations were bundelled from AT&T, Verizon, JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and others. He lied about NAFTA twice. He was asked two times if anyone from his campaign had spoken with the Canadian Consul and he said,"It didn't happen." Sen. Obama reported a $150,000 donation from Tony Rezko and just last week he admitted his reporting had been "mistaken" He said the money had been given to charity, but $90,000 is unaccounted for. By the way, Ambassador Wilson, who welcomed Sen. Clinton to Bosnia said her help had been indispensable .

If you've ever been in a life and death situation with your child you take every miniscule memory to your grave in perfect detail. I was in one with my daughter and thankfully it all turned out well. However, I can remember second by second every detail as if it were 5 minutes ago.

She lied and then pulled a "Clinton" classic word parse etc.

However, I believe that her nose-dive in approval ratings is likely due to her knee-capping Obama and other Dems that dare to support a more worthy candidate.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:59 PM on 03/27/2008

If you don't believe the media is biased towards Obama you need look no further than the mass touting of this poll. No other poll shows such a swing in numbers as this one. It is flawed at best for reasons pointed out already. However, if you want to believe in this poll then you must also consider that the SAME people polled placed Clinton in a tie with Obama for who should be the nominee. So, at least with these 700 people, negative feelings toward a candidate does not mean they wouldn't vote for that candidate.

Personally, I'm not crazy about the personality of the CEO of the company I work for but there is no doubt he is very talented at running the company. I don't want to have dinner with him, but I'd happily vote for his continued leadership.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:08 PM on 03/27/2008

NBC/WSJ said they oversampled the African American vote. I don't know why they would do that since it obviously would not be a representative sample. There is only one reason to do that: create the outcome you want. This poll is worthless.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:13 PM on 03/27/2008

I agree. The mass media looks real stupid since they spent all day yesterday (FoxNews included) spouting this crap. The poll is not accurate, it isn't even scientific since it was skewed.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:06 PM on 03/28/2008

They did it because it was a group who would be more likely to have an opinion on their questions about race/racism et. al.

They weighed the total number of African Americans in proportion with their actual percentage of the population though. They asked more of them in the poll, but counted their answers less.

One of the ironies of this campaign is that The Clintons have been doing as much as they can to damage Obama, and they seem to have forgotten how bloodied they were in the 90s and yet still won. Voters, at least Dem voters, can smell the stink coming from fabricated attacks and will give candidates the benefit of the doubt until the issue is proven beyond a shadow, like Bill's Oval Office romp was.

Obama's 20+ year affiliation with racist Reverend Wright as his "spiritual adviser" sends chills down your back about what Barack thinks and says about people of other races in private. Now I understand why Obama's wife made those ungrateful remarks about multi-racial America.

Stop with the meaness! You know that Obama is a gentleman who is always when speaking about Hillary very respectful. He has been trying as hard as he can to run a clean campaign.
You know in your heart of hearts that Obama doesn't hold the same thoughts as Rev. Wright.
Obama is a deep thinker, he seems to be an old soul. He as many of us know, that older people hold views that are unlike our own. My dad was an Archie Bunker bigot. I loved my father but he was older and lived different experiences as I did. Some days he would say very racist, hateful things. It didn't mean I loved my father any less, it just meant, that I didn't agree with him. And when did Americans become such wussies that we can't handle debates. Why do we have to try to destroy Obama, just because he is ahead in the race. Also, I go to church an don't agree with my minister. No one thinks the same, we are individuals with seperate thoughts and minds.
United we stand, divided we fall!!!

I'm an Obama supporter (read my history is you don't believe me), however, the article states that:
"In addition, we oversampled African-Americans in order to get a more reliable cross-tab on many of the questions we asked in this poll regarding Sen. Barack Obama's speech on race and overall response to last week's Rev. Jeremiah Wright dustup. "
OK, the fact that this poll purposely "oversampled" one particular group, a group which is 80 to 90% in opposition to Hillary Clinton, is by definition a dishonest poll. You might as well "oversample" Rupublicans and I'd bet we could get a Hillary approval rating around 5%. The whole poll and article are dishonest and should be disregarded.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:33 PM on 03/27/2008

"The main sample for the survey was a cross section of 700 registered voters nationally. As is the case with all of our usual polls, this sample is statistically representative of voters across the country, accurately reflecting the gender, age, educational, geographical, and racial makeup of the electorate. The column in the topline document labeled "All Voters", as well as nearly all of the subgroups listed in the survey crosstabs, are among these cross section of 700. Eleven percent (11%) of these interviews -- or 77 interviews -- were with African Americans, which accurately reflects African Americans" proportion of the electorate. Thus, African Americans are NOT over-represented in our national sample.

In addition to this national cross section, we interviewed an extra 100 African Americans to analyze the opinions of this group with a greater degree of statistical reliability. We combined these 100 only with the 77 African Americans that naturally fell into our national sample, for a total of 177 interviews with African Americans; these extra interviews were not combined with the full national sample of 700. The column in the topline document labeled "African Americans" shows the responses of these 177 respondents, as do the subgroups in the crosstabs for African Americans, African-American men, and African-American women."

Erm, you clearly have no idea what oversampling means... It's just a mechanism to allow more of a certain group into your study. That way, you will get more reliable answers to certain questions. In this case, you could get a better sense of the percentage of white people that supported Obama vs percentage of black people etc etc.

For the overall approval rating however, they would have adjusted to take the oversampling into account.
