Hagel: Bush Administration 'Certainly Misrepresented' Facts On Run-Up To War

Over the past year, Senator Chuck Hagel has not been shy about expressing his disillusionment with his own party. Having announced that he'll be foregoing a third term in the Senate, Hagel has been slow to support GOP nominee John McCain, and has recently penned a book titled America: Our Next Chapter, in which he espouses the idea of "an independent candidate for the presidency, or a bipartisan unity ticket."

On last night's edition of Hannity And Colmes Hagel allowed himself to express the full measure of his disaffection with the Republican Party without giving an inch on his conservative principles. His votes against the prescription drug bill and the No Child Left Behind act, he maintained were votes "against the real big government type programs." But it was his criticism of the Bush administration's war strategy that drew the harshest critique from Hagel. While Hagel remains unwilling to characterize Bush's pre-war positioning with the word "lie," it was clear that Hagel was familiar with many, many synonyms for that word:

COLMES: Senator, when the president said he would let the IAEA finish and didn't, did he lie to you?

HAGEL: Well, lie is a tough word. I have always tried to be responsible with my language. And I have never accused the president of lying. I would say this, that his administration certainly misrepresented, starting with the fact when we were told, many of us, including me, that this administration had not made a decision to go to war. At the time of the resolution vote in October of 2002, in fact, now we know that that is just not true.

COLMES: You don't want to use the word lie, that is a strong word. But that's what you are implying?

HAGEL: You can take any meaning out of that that you want, but I think -- almost six years now after this, we have a pretty clear record of what they said and what they didn't say.

Hagel saved his most unsparing language for Vice President Dick Cheney:

COLMES: You also say in the book that Dick Cheney cherry picked intelligence and used fear to promote war sloganeering. That's a pretty strong charge against him.

HAGEL: Well, he did. And if you recall the war speech that he gave the National VFW Convention in August of 2002, the day after that speech I called Colin Powell and I said to Colin Powell, what's going on? You are going to war? Powell said no, the president has made no decisions. I said that war speech that Cheney gave is very, very clear. Cheney was doing that all the lead up to the invasion.

Hagel concluded: "I don't think that they were direct and honest at all with what they were telling us versus the planning that was going on."

no... they lied... outright lies... intentional lies... fully knowing that they were lying...

they need to be put under oath so we can watch the lies continue so that we may then add perjury to the list of crimes.

Well...I am working on the assumption that Senators Hagel and Biden had a good and long heart-to-heart during their recent trip back to Afghanistan and the region. If so, then we may just see the Chuck and Joe show take off in the form of a Biden/Hagel fusion or hybrid ticket that would be the answer to so many of our challenging problems. Hey, a girl can dream...can't she!?

It was easy to see they were planing for war as early as September 2002 when pictures of a massive US airbass being built by the US in Qatar were available on the web. The pictures showed the construction of large hardened plane hangers and the cost at the time was upwards of 800 million.

I'll bet Hagel knew of these preparations for war. Hillary probably didn't as she was completely bamboozled by Bush and was probably too busy dodging sniper fire.

Hagel may be an important person on the short VP list...

Hagels influence could be useful to this nation in undoing the litany of wrongs committed by this administration. Even though he's no longer interested in being a politician, there's still a dire need in DC for those cut from his cloth.

So he did watch the PBS Frontline on "Bush's War"!

How is it that I knew Bush was going to invade and occupy Iraq in the summer of 2002 and Hagel didn't? He had more information than I did and had access to the information I gleaned to know that war was going to happen and that Bush lied when he said otherwise.

Think of politicians as being more loyal to party than to country. That is their version of "patriotism".
In that context a lot of their stupidity and lies and selective blindness are perfectly logical.

You were acutally look at the facts, they get to bypass facts and rely on "patriotism" as their fact.

I watched the Front Line Anniversary Special and again and again and again, Hillary is full of shit, McCain is full of shit and Hagel is full of shit. And I don't know where my previous post is but - Hagel voted to give the George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Scooter Libby, Douglas Feith, Richard Pearl, William Kristol, Jerry Bremer, etc. the conduct what has become the "American War" in Iraq.

Quite right Chuckie. And you can further demonstrate your opposition to the war by endorsing Barack Obama, and changing your party affiliation. You can also do an anti-war spot for moveon.org. You can do interviews on your book tour in major publications in which you call Dick Cheney a liar, and intimate that McCain is a shameless hypocrite who has chosen to hump Bush's knee-cap in order to serve one term in the White House. Ok Chuck?..Chuck?..Chuck??? ....where'd he go?

When is a lie a mis-speak or just not telling the truth?

I'm so glad no one "lies" anymore. -- -- --
I admire Senator Hagel. I hope he will continue to be a voice of reason (for both parties, and for all Americans in the spectrum from Liberal to Conservative)

America, where no one lies. Truly a great milestone for civilization. Why, this means we don't need the IRS any more.

Hagel is just another in a long list of Bush enablers who authorized President Numb- Nuts to go to war. This maverick, independent bullshit moniker that they lay at the feet of the McCain and Hagle is, well, bullshit! It is/was the constitutional responsibility of Congress to inquire, question and probe before committing US Troops, and Hagel failed to do so. Oh, an to all of you Democratic Hagel Supporters out there, check out his position and you will see a most revealing thing - he's a Conservative Republican.

No need to condemn Hagel when he is giving his seat up, and speaking out about how he really feels about the last 6 years. He is on his way out. Save your venom for those who are staying and still support the war. While you are at it, try sorting the Democrats who enabled and continue to enable Bush to ruin this country into the group deserving some of that venom.

Hagel seems like a pretty straight guy. Yeah, he is a conservative in the true sense, and not in the neocon sense. Being conservative used mean upholding the Constitution and being fiscally responsible. Those goals are not in and of themselves evil. We need opposition views to navigate a path of reason. As of late that has been made very difficult because of the Rove talents brought from the experience of telemarketing being applied to politics. Divisive and manipulative politics. Focus on short term goals with little more than lip service being paid to anything beyond the next election cycle has brought us to the point where we can only deride those from the "other side" of the argument. It is the reason why Obama's approach of unifying us is so needed.

We will need conservatives to join us to make change. So we will have to learn how to address them with other than derisive rejection. If Hagel can't be viewed with understanding we have a big chore ahead of us in this learning process.

You ought to watch more C-SPAN. Hagel has recently been having a "change of heart". He's been voting against his party on pretty much EVERY issue. Your rant would be better directed at Hillary. If you look at her voting record, you will see a most revealing thing....

Hagel has always been against the war.

I may be wrong, but I think Hagel voted agasinst the war. He may be on the other ideological side of the spectrum, but at least he isn't a kool-aid drinker. The man has some integrity.

Apparently Hagel did vote for war, something he expresses regret for. He has since put his money where his mouth is, supporting Murtha back when it really mattered and when very few Dems had the courage to speak up.

Yes, you *may* be wrong.
Hagel:
Voted NO on redeploying non-essential US troops out of Iraq in 9 months. (Dec 2007)
Voted NO on redeploying US troops out of Iraq by March 2008. (Mar 2007)
Voted NO on redeploying troops out of Iraq by July 2007. (Jun 2006)
Voted NO on investigating contract awards in Iraq & Afghanistan. (Nov 2005)
Voted YES on authorizing use of military force against Iraq. (Oct 2002)

I was wrong, but he has a good voting record on some important bills. He voted against the Kyle Lieberman act, against telecomms immunity, for Habeus Corpus... He's no Feingold, but then again, neither is he a Lieberman.
