Backwards Day! Wherein We Call Out The Celeb Media For Referring To A Fact As A Rumor

Huffington Post   |  Rachel Sklar   |   March 27, 2008 10:47 AM

Is a rumor still a rumor once it's been videotaped, replayed on network and cable news, reported everywhere, debated furiously on cable news and in the press and been picked up all over the blogosphere? Apparently so, according to CBS' "The Insider," which included the incident wherein a university student asked Chelsea Clinton about Monica Lewinsky during a campus tour. That happened on Tuesday, March 25th, and by mid-afternoon was being reported across the board. But, that didn't stop "The Insider" from framing it as a "rumor" in their "Rumor Report" in last night's show, which re-aired this morning (and which ETP caught the beginning of following "The CBS Early Show," which yes we did actually watch, and apparently there is a stalwart Harry Smith fan club amongst the ladies out there. Also, Tony Snow looked like a hippie in his university days.) Now, we recognize that "The Insider" isn't a news show per se, but it does report on entertainment news and while apparently this made the cut, we're more interested in the standards it applies. Usually those in the press criticize the celebrity media for claiming unverified rumor as fact, not the way around — but still, this seemed especially odd given the fact that the story had been so completely verified, reported, and disseminated by the time "The Insider" got on the air. Watch and decide for yourself:

For those breathlessly waiting to find out the answer, "The Insider" told viewers approximately 29 minutes into the program that yes, someone had asked Chelsea about Monica Lewinsky. Stop the presses!

Oh, puh-lease!!

You've got this one completely wrong. It's YOU who's bending the facts to suit the story you want to write.

"Real or Rumour?" is a teaser for the actual item later in the show. They ask a (BS) question and then later say "that's a fact" or "that's a rumour" depending on the answer to their own question. The question could just as easily be "Is Ms Celebrity pregnant?" whilst showing a pic of a 'bump' on her tummy. Later they will tell us that "that's just a rumour - Ms Celebrity's agent tells us the star is NOT pregnant".

Yes, it's COMPLETELY LAME but so are you for watching a 30 second promo and NOT the actual segment, and then making a tenuous claim.

Obviously "The Insider" knows it's audience is a much different demographic than those who watch MSM, MSNBC TV, FOX, etc., even though MSNBC & FOX are entertainment rather than mainstream media.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:41 PM on 03/30/2008

Interesting that this author has one article up about how the media was trying to say something was a 'rumor' when it was a fact. And another about how Chris Mathews was a bad man for shooting down someone who actually was presenting rumors as facts.

Hmmmm.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:51 PM on 03/30/2008

There's nothing odd about that. Both are examples of bad journalism.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:01 PM on 03/30/2008

...lol, nothing "odd" or out of the ordinary for Clintonite supporters...Hey, alls fair in this game of politics, gotta' put the best possible spin on the facts to make them seem as something other than and etc...it's the SAME-O game play that has been in place far too long !!! (Alarming that how well it "WORKS"...take something OUT of context and repeat it and "inuendo" it by not QUITE stating outright and then allowing an interprative by the short attention spanned audience who only goes on those quick sound bytes, praying they heard THE one that counts most in favor of the campaign of the moment...Tragicalluy, it often works and is why the NEGATIVES get promoted no matter how UN-based in facts but effects the perception which in turn affects the vote tally...tragic too that more do NOT do THEIR homework i order to be better informed in order to make those voting decisions !!!

Rumor has it, George Bush is the worst president in history.

um OK?

Rachel,
Don't let the bastards get you down!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:27 PM on 03/28/2008

I'm sorry Chelsea's campaigning and is presented as an adult. She should be asked adult questions. If she says "It is none of your business" then with all due respect to her the question will go unanswered and we are free to speculate at will.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:44 PM on 03/28/2008

Rachel, as usual, your irrelevant and mundane blogs never fail to amaze¦.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:35 AM on 03/28/2008

Agreed!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:29 AM on 03/29/2008

not very interesting in the least. go back to your shrill hacking for mcclinton.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:30 AM on 03/28/2008

So she is a hack and shrill to boot and yet you keep reading here which makes you a slow learner, possibly homeschooled or you didn't read her and you are making it all up, neither of which is very good. Come back when you have a valid and learned point of view and something to contribute to the discussion.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:41 AM on 03/30/2008

Rachel, it was reported and re-reported on every cable news show and local news in the country. I agree that it was probably done to try squeeze some negatives from the Lewinski thing.

But focusing on Insider's treatment of it is not post worthy. How about a post discussing how we're all looking forward to supporting the Dem candidate, whoever that may be, in November to rid the WH of Republicans?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:23 PM on 03/27/2008

But, that's not true!!! I would NEVER support the lying Clinton, EVER!!! This is not an idle threat, but a stone, cold fact!!! I will finally become an Independent and vote (for the first time) for Ralph Nader!!! Hillary is a sociopath, who has thrown everything in the KITCHEN SINK, & I will NOT "join together for the sake of the party!" NEVER!!! That's what she's done!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:32 AM on 03/29/2008

Sorry, but if you are going to vote, vote for somebody who will truly make a difference. Vote for something or somebody, not against something. If you vote for Ralph Nader it is becvause you understand that of all the people now running he is the only one who has a record of doing that which is in the People's interests. The reason your car has seatbelts and Airbags is because of his dedicated work and lobbying to pass legislation to force automakers to install them. The reason you have clean water and clean air is because of his dedicated work lobbying Congress to pass the laws that the shrub has been trying to gut.. He did these things not to get rich or famous, he did it becuse he is one of those once-in-a-lifetime people who believe and dedicate them selves to the service of the greater good. Don't be a spoiled brat, be a noble person who votes for what is best and whose conscience is clear and resolute.

I prefer Obama to Clinton. I perferred Edwards and Kucinich. Now I work for Nader because I won't ever vote for the lesser of 2 evils and that is what Clinton/McCain would be. I am relieved Nader has come forward again. There no longer is enough difference between Domocan't and Repuglican to matter.

excerpt from article about Ralph's sister Laura

"Anyway, she"s better known for her other work with indigenous people in Latin America, but that was the piece that I loved most, and I idolized (and frankly still do) Laura Nader. I wouldn"t have had the guts to go meet with her to tell her how much I wanted to do my PhD under her if it weren"t for my parents" encouragement, so they came with me. Nader graciously received the lot of us in her office at Berkeley. I told her how much I admired her work. She asked me about my own interests in anthropology. I told her about my perceptions of life in Saudi Arabia, where I"d been living with my family and working as a teacher and photographer before I went to McGill. My dad asked her if she was Arab, with the last name Nader (which is from the Arabic for "rare"). She said that yes, she was American-born to Lebanese immigrant parents.

Then my dad asked her if she was in any way related to Ralph Nader. She sighed and gave the impression that she was barely restraining herself from rolling her eyes. "Yes, he"s my brother," she said.

"Who"s Ralph Nader?" I asked. I was naive. I felt really stupid for not knowing who they were talking about.

Boring...not an issue, who cares, why, please!!!!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:04 PM on 03/27/2008

Rachel,
Have you noticed that fewer and fewer people comment on your posts?
It's because you have wasted so much time and bandwidth shilling for Hillary Clinton that nobody much cares when you try to write something else... or not, as in this posting.
I hear the call center down the road is hiring.

Rachel Sklar is a self professed Canadian and therefore can't vote. Hence you would think impartial. What is wrong asking someone stumping for a candidate a viable question? Because she is a "kid" or under 30(?) or it's "personal" or the daughter of these unfortunate two, has nothing to do with the fact. If she's big enough to stump for her momma, well at least be prepared for all questions. I certainly don't want a President (or anyone campaigning for her/him) telling the constituents "it's none of your business" when it IS our business. To not see that question coming, eventually, speaks volumes of this family's sense of entitlement. Read some of the reports from Secret Service personnel about what a bitch those two were while inhabiting the White House. That's like being stupid enough to chew out a cook and then wonder why they spit in yer soup.
Oh, I worked in Canada for three years on the railroad. Love the country and the people (even though the eastern part seems a little hostile).

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:08 PM on 03/27/2008

Wow Rachel, must have been slim picking today if that is the best story you found.

I would be curious to know how college crowds respond to Chelsea generally. I don't think she is making much of a connection. She is just sent around the country by her parents, kind of like "you are young, they are young, go connect."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:42 PM on 03/27/2008

There is a venerable propaganda technique in operation here. The basic idea is to abrade the public's sense of truth, by over-reporting vagueness, and by reporting rumor as truth, or truth as rumor.

I don't know if those responsible for the "Rumor Report" were consciously excercising that principle or not, but I am sure (by eliminating possibly legitimate reasons for shoddy reporting) that FOX Broadcasting engages heavily in the tactic. And since, to the news media's continuing shame, they all let the lowest standards prevail, the other media regularly engage in it, too.

In case you've forgotten, or never noticed, a person CAN tell when they are hearing the truth. You simply have to train your ear to pick up on voice-stress and phrasing, and whether the speaker is actually addressing the topic at hand, or trying to create a side-topic to derail the dialog into a path they like. Once you start parsing statements with these factors in mind, you will know a lie when you hear one.

If you want to train yourself to recognize truth, I suggest you start with recognizing lies first. And the handiest way to do that, in my opinion, is to look up Boy George's old campaign video. You now know what the lies were (very nearly everything he said!), so it shouldn't take long before you can pick out the "tells."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:33 PM on 03/27/2008

Rachel, on a recent comment, I admitted to being a fan of your "wit and wisdom," but frankly, this post I find to be a bit silly. I know it must be hard to (on a several times a day basis) come up with interesting media stuff on which to comment, so here's a thought (free of charge): I've noticed that frequently the headlines posted on the Huff Post don't always square up completely with the article with which they connect. For example, today's home page has a headline "Obama, not Clinton, Pressing for Florida Delegate Solution," although the actual article doesn't confirm any "pressing" of anyone, merely a contact. Other examples have been portions of quotes taken out of context which seem to be more inflammatory, and well, headline grabbing.

I think it might be interesting for you, on occasion, to serve as a sort of public editor for the Huff Post and to evaluate these sorts of things. Just a suggestion, and like I said, free of charge.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:56 PM on 03/27/2008

Nice suggestion, rbdc. I too have found lots of odd HuffPost headlines that don't match the actual stories.

I think it would get old after a week or two (though it looks like she would not run out of material until at least the Democratic convention). Perhaps if she did one article on the subject and then ended her articles with the latest, most egregious examples?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:07 PM on 03/28/2008

Yes. By no means was I suggesting that she take up that role exclusively; that would get old in a hurry. However, I do think it is important for the credibility of all news outlets to be evaluated honestly and impartially -- which should lead to those outlets trying harder to be fair and accurate. For instance, there's another example in this afternoon's (Sunday, March 30) Huff Post of a headline not appearing to be supported by the facts. The major headline on the top of the home page reads, "Clinton Deluged with Calls For Her Withdrawl." When you click through, you come to a Wash Post article which does, in fact, say that but gives no supporting evidence for it. However, an article in today's NY Times entitled "Clinton Shouldn't Feel Forced to Quit Race, Obama Says" states, "A few prominent Obama supporters have recently suggested that the time has come for Mrs. Clinton, of New York, to consider withrdrawing. . . " and then goes on to name Senator Pat Leahy as one of them. From what I can tell, the Times version seems more accurate; although it could eventually cascade, right now, it seems more like a trickle than a deluge.

From reading many of her posts this primary season, I believe Ms. Sklar values accuracy, integrity and fairness in journalism, and that for her to occasionally take on this suggested role, I feel would be a match of her abilities and values.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:50 PM on 03/30/2008

I've looked at the article you mention, rbdc, and here's my thought for you, "free of charge."

You cite "merely a contact," as if two cited Obama staffers calling the Florida state Democratic Chair, to "talk about possible ways to give Florida a voice in the nomination" was not worthy of the term "pressing" for a solution to the impass.

This is creative interpretation at its best, on your part. Maybe they should bring it before the Senate, to satisfy whatever your definition of "pressing" is?

stop watching tv.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:47 PM on 03/27/2008

I stand by my original comment. I didn't read anything in the article itself about anyone pressing, pressuring, pushing for, urging, entreating, etc.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:58 PM on 03/27/2008

It depends on what the meaning of "is" is.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:37 PM on 03/30/2008

Why is it that a question of the Monica"s mess is asked Chelsea Clinton ?? Think back to the same "error" or era when Republican Rep. Dan Burton was exposed as having spawned BASTARD, OH GOOD Gracious should have typed illegitimate. Republican Burton when appearing on MSNBC recently , looked like the lover boy he is, had his hair bleached, teeth capped and sure enough had a face lift. I noted that the question " Congressman how is your BASTARD"? was not asked.????????

Good idea rbdc, but I say make her pay for it- after all, these wealthy liberal media elite can afford it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:02 PM on 03/27/2008

Thanks for the endorsement, comatoast.

Well, if she likes the idea, maybe I'll charge Arianna Huffington a fiver. I don't know about Rachel Sklar, but I'm pretty sure Arianna can afford it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:39 PM on 03/27/2008

I'm with you rbdc. I don't know about Public Editor, but there's got to be something better suited to Ms. Sklar's talents than stories like this one. This story should have "unpaid intern" as a byline.
