Obama Compares Election To Bataan Death March

Obama Compares Election To Bataan Death March

The Huffington Post   |   March 27, 2008 04:56 PM

"For those of you who are just weary of the primary, and feeling kind of ground down or that it's like a Bataan death march, I just want everybody to know that the future is bright," Sen. Barack Obama told a group of fundraisers in New York on Thursday, according to a pool report.

Read the full details below:

At a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser Thursday afternoon at the Credit Suisse building in Manhattan, Sen. Barack Obama echoed the themes he'd discussed in a speech about the economy earlier in the day.

"We have an economy that is out of balance," Obama told the audience of about 300 supporters. "It's one in which most of the people in this room have benefited enormously over the last decade - and I include myself in that group...but it is an economy that has left millions and millions of Americans behind."

Restoring the economy, he said, "means putting in place a regulatory framework that's up to the task of dealing with a global financial system and a new set of financial instruments...but more than anything, what's important is restoring a sense that this is not a 'you're on your own' society, that we're a 'we're in this together' society."

The Illinois senator began his remarks with a barely-veiled shot at his primary opponent, Sen. Hillary Clinton.

"I decided to run not because of some long-held ambitions or because I thought it was somehow owed to me - and certainly I wasn't presumptuous enough to think it was my turn," Obama said.

He dismissed concerns that the bruising Democratic primary would hurt the party's chance of taking back the White House in November.

The Democratic primary "has gotten people engaged in politics who were never engaged before or who had forgotten what it's like to be passionate about politics," he said.

"I am absolutely confident that by the time this thing is over, the Democratic party will be completely unified."

"For those of you who are just weary of the primary, and feeling kind of ground down or that it's like a Bataan death march, I just want everybody to know that the future is bright."

He took about a half-dozen questions from the audience, addressing energy policy, the war in Iraq and how he will appeal to independent voters in the general election.

In discussing energy policy, Obama said the White House should seek to change people's habits as well.

"I think the president needs to use the bully pulpit to change our culture...we are a wasteful culture. It's always been that way because of our history. We do everything big."

Asked negotiating with certain foreign leaders such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Obama said:

"I think people understand the notion of talking to our enemies," Obama said. "If FDR can meet with Stalin and Nixon can meet with Mao and Kennedy can meet with Khrushchev and Reagan can meet with Gorbechav, then the notion that we can't meet with some half-baked dictator is ridiculous."

"I'm not worried about losing a propaganda war with Ahmadinejad," he said, "That guy opens his mouth and I think people see there are problems there."

Maybe in the general he can compare it to being tortured in Vietnam as a POW for years on end. Sheesh.

Does Barry Obama know anything about the Bataan Death March?? 90,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war tortured and slaughtered by the Empire of Japan during a 60 mile march to prison camps. Bayonets for beheadings and stabbings. Indescriminate beatings and shootings of the slow and the weak. I guess when you use words as your tools, you should chose them wisely. Nice reference, Barry.

Were you starting the tabulation at 2009?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:43 AM on 03/29/2008

Considering what Obama actually meant and said, that is a pretty stupid headline, even acknowledging HuffPo's need to capture the reader's attention. His real message is a lot more upbeat than the headline would indicate, and it was mostly on the status of the economy anyway.

"When the tumult and the shouting die, when the bands are gone and the lights are dimmed, there is the stark reality of responsibility in an hour of history haunted with those gaunt, grim specters of strife, dissension, and materialism at home, and ruthless, inscrutable, and hostile power abroad. The ordeal of the twentieth century "the bloodiest, most turbulent age of the Christian era"is far from over. Sacrifice, patience, understanding, and implacable purpose may be our lot for years to come. ¦ Let"s talk sense to the American people! Let"s tell them the truth, that there are no gains without pains, that we are now on the eve of great decisions."

ADLAI STEVENSON: Welcoming Speech at the Democratic National Convention 1952
If you want to read about a stormy political battle, read about this intellectual, who ran as the Democratic candidate for President in 1952 and 1956, and lost both times to Dwight Eisenhower.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:58 AM on 03/28/2008

Adlai Stevenson -- another Illinoisian! -- would have made a wonderful president. He had the great misfortune to run against a world class war hero, Dwight Eisenhower. I am old enough to remember that campaign, and the difference between then and today's Rovian political culture is like night and day. There is only one word to summarize today's political culture, and that word is HATE.

hmmmm......lets see.....

nice comparison to Adlai....

nice correlation to Eisenhower....

WOW...History DOES repeat itself....8)

hmmmmm.....looks like this just may spell TROUBLE...8)

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:24 AM on 03/29/2008

Wow, HuffPo, it was pointed out yesterday that Senator Obama did not compare the campaign to the Bataan Death March as anyone with an eighth grade level of reading comprehension could deduce. Yet you still haven't changed the headline. Why not?

ya think this could be why.....

go and drink some more kool aid....8)

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:25 AM on 03/29/2008

It is a death march, but let's call it by its rightful name: The Clinton Death March.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:10 AM on 03/28/2008

WOW wait till he gets to the general this is a cakewalk.

Go Hillary (now she's energized)

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:29 AM on 03/28/2008

Please note that Obama said in this speech that some of his listeners might compare this campaign to the Bataan Death March...not that he was doing so. I can already see posts by families of Death March survivors saying Obama is arrogant to compare the campaign to their family members' ordeals. This is not what he was saying. He would honor your sacrifices.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:43 AM on 03/28/2008

Beckyjo... (You said) "Please note that Obama said in this speech that some of his listeners might compare this campaign to the Bataan Death March...not that he was doing so."
(Obama actually said, Quote) ""For those of you who are just weary of the primary, and feeling kind of ground down or that it's like a Bataan death march, I just want everybody to know that the future is bright."
There is NO "Might compare" in what he said... Key words = weary, ground down, it's (it IS) like a Bataan death march... FACT...
The lack of Honesty and Integrity of Obama supporters is telling... Obama stands on his Pedestal, while his supporters supply degrading words, excuses, rationalizations and mean spirited behaviors... Seems like to Obama supporters, that whatever the Clinton's say always has deeper Racist, vile, meanings... While people seem to always misunderstand what Obama "actually" was saying...
When Obama said he would finish his term as a U S Senator and NOT run for President, he actually meant he was going to run, right?
As to Obama's "it's like a Bataan death march." He supposedly didn't mean this Campaign is comparable with 10,000 to 12,000 prisoners dying by being force marched 5 days without food, or a single sip of water, in a hot tropical climate?Throats cut for sport... Some shot... Prisoners bayoneted if they fell... Or, run over alive, by convoy vehicles... Or simply robbed and left to die... Yeah, Right!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:40 PM on 03/28/2008

Obama has a lack of honesty and integrity? And you compare that to what? CLINTON? You are delusional. Obama has more integrity and honesty than any other candidate we've had in the race. Stop drinking the kool-aid.

Maybe it's just me, but I think a more appropriate analogy would be comparing the Clinton campaign to Sherman's March to the Sea.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:17 AM on 03/28/2008

hate to tell you this but check your history.....8)

Sherman was a Union man and they DID effectively WIN the war....8)

and look who was the PRIME beneficiary of the win.....8)

DUH!!!!!!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:30 AM on 03/29/2008

I think we are experiencing the Democratic Party influenza. The cure is taking 24-48 hrs. of thoughtful rest. Think of the infusion of new voters. Cultivate the base of the party and realize that no one person will outweigh the need to build upon the 2006 momentum that has given Democrats a majority in Congress. Individually, make a separate peace with the party. Above, all vote for a bigger Democratic majority and all will be well. This flu is not fatal. The fate of America is at stake.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:04 PM on 03/28/2008

Sherman unlike Grant was a brilliant general- he hated what he had to do and he hated war.
Remember HRC "this is the fun stuff".

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:35 PM on 03/28/2008

Perhaps a better analogy would be the Russians retreat before Napoleon.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:32 PM on 03/28/2008

Interesting, since it's Obama who has been on a constant negative campaign since Texas and Ohio. :) One reason I will not support Obama is that his supporters do not ever require him to be accountable to even them. I have no problem gigging Hillary for her stupid Bosnia story. That was an indulgence of ego there, and it cost her.

I have yet to see a single story where Obama supporters aren't completely apologists for Obama, no matter how ridiculous.

That's dangerous. I want a president who is accountable.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:31 AM on 03/28/2008

And Clinton is accountable? Another one drinking the Kool-Aid. Obama isn't hiding anything and has been up front about everything. He has nothing to apologize for, which is much more than I can say for your candidate. What do we need to hold him accountable for, we ask as Obama supporters. Please. Take the blinders off and see what's really going on.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:53 PM on 03/28/2008

How about Obama saying on 01-22-06 that he would not run for President or Vice-President on Meet the Press. Sure does look like he's running now...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:45 PM on 03/29/2008

Then why don't you hold HRC accountable for her complicity in the worst foreign policy disaster since Viet Nam, which will be a blight on this country for a generation to come? Honest answer, now.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:07 AM on 03/28/2008

I have NEVER seen you gig Hillary for anything. The only reason you're doing it now is because you want to give yourself yet another reason not to vote for Obama - and you've been looking for one ever since this election started. I remember when you said you were voting for Hillary Clinton because "there's something funny about Obama".

And even in your "gigging" of Hillary, you're calling it an indulgence of ego. An indulgance of ego is saying "I will get her supporters. The question is - will she get all of mine?" (There, I gigged Obama, btw. Happy?). What Hillary Clinton did was lie, and continued to do so even after people who were there said "that's not what happened at all". It took video evidence for her to admit it, and then she blamed it on sleep deprivation.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:44 AM on 03/28/2008

Except Sherman won

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:30 AM on 03/28/2008

True, but southerners used him as a justification for anti-American behavior (example: Jim Crow laws), not that the North was innocent.

Maybe the poster was implying mission success (the nomination) at a high price (party breakdown and loss in November).

Metaphors can be tricky things in the wrong hands.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:54 AM on 03/30/2008

I don't think we can count on his winning Texas after that one....

Or any of the red states, for that matter. That's the sort of stuff that sets Middle America's teeth on edge: "by god, it's our god-given right as Americans to drive four-by-fours that get two mpg and toss our Redman wrappers out the winder!"

Only by people who would have never voted for him in the first place. Most of us are already right where Barack is on our consumer society being the death of American culture. By challenging us to take responsibility, Barack will win the general in a landslide.
