Carville Unloads: Richardson Misled, Promised He\'d Back Hillary

Carville Unloads: Richardson Misled, Promised He'd Back Hillary

March 27, 2008 09:44 PM

Long time Clinton backer James Carville charged on Thursday that, prior to endorsing Sen. Barack Obama, Bill Richardson promised several "very, very senior" Clinton supporters that he would back the New York Democrat.

Carville said the matter was "terribly mishandled" by Richardson and that the New Mexico governor owed Clinton supporters an apology.

Appearing on CNN's Larry King Live, Carville was asked to explain why, in the aftermath of Richardson's endorsement, he referred the New Mexico Governor as Judas, selling his political soul for 30 pieces of silver.

"He made misrepresentations," said the raging Cajun. "He told people he was going to endorse Senator Clinton, that he couldn't endorse someone else. And at the same time, apparently, he was doing something else, and people are justifiably and understandably furious about this. I have never attacked any other supporter of Senator Obama. Many of them are dear friends of mine. Some of them are some of my best friends. I thought this was an exceptional case that merited special consideration."

Carville's appearance on CNN represents the deepest elaboration yet on his Richardson remark. The former Bill Clinton aide and frequent CNN contributor had described Richardson's endorsement of Obama as "an act of betrayal," appropriate for the week of Easter. Asked about the comment in the days that followed, Carville simply stated that he had been quoted accurately. On Thursday night, he provided greater context.

Richardson, he said, had been making promises to the Clinton folks as recently as "a month ago." And, as evidence, he named names of those who had been given assurances, including prominent Clinton fundraisers Elizabeth Bagley, Haim Saban, and Alan Patricof.

"My phone has been ringing off the hook with people," said Carville, "donors in the Democratic Party, telling me that he made representations to them that are not true.... I think what the governor needs to do is say that he hasn't handled this very well, he's not candid and frank with people, and I think this whole thing will go away. But I think he owes a lot of people in this party an apology."

Richardson, at the time of this publication, could not be reached for comment. But he did have a defender on the CNN program. Michael Eric Dyson, an Obama supporter, cautioned both the host as well as Carville to put the endorsement into a lighter perspective.

"I think we're making too much of this," he said. "I can understand the disappointment that has come as a result, in the aftermath of Governor Richardson's decision, but to single him out with such venom, and with such lack of balance, on both sides. This is a bitterly contested war, so to speak, and they are going after anybody they can. Obama has lost and won some, in terms of endorsements. To single this out as the extraordinary act of a Judas, misses the point that we're here, talking about the best future for American, and what it should suggest to those who are looking on is that, here was a man that was deeply committed to the Clintons but there was something about Obama that caused him to change his mind, and to cast his fate, so to speak, with Obama. That should create pause for those who consider Clinton."

Thank you Carville; your recent comments and usual nastiness towards Bill Richardson's decision to stand by Obama with his endorsement, have better reinforced Obama's platform, and pointed out what he is about, better than I have heard stated any where; you finally let you're mouth overload you! Every word you spoke, reinforced the very "Old Washington" policies of the Clintons, Bushes, and on and on.
ie, favors, paybacks, behind the scene deals, you scratch my back, (Bill will come and watch the Super Bowl with you, )"Quid pr Quo", everything the Clinton's will carry right back with them to Washington, and things go back to business as usual. Obama, with his great insite, has promised a change; a great house cleaning in Washington D.C.; out with the old and a new beginning for the people of this country; things actually taking place on the Outside of the locked doors, with "WE THE PEOPLE", as participants, and actually knowing what is going on in our Country, other than what you chosen few wish us to know;how very refreshng, and what a wonderful concept, the actual one this Country was founded on, and that has slowly been stolen from us, and given only to the "Elite", such as the Clintons. Thank you Bill Richardson, for using you're best judgement in a decision that was yours to make, and Carville, thank you for finally telling the truth, even if it wasn't intentional! Enjoy you're 30 pieces, you earned it!

As they say, there's honor even among thieves.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:12 PM on 03/29/2008

Carville is 100% right.
HE IS JUDASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:29 PM on 03/29/2008

If Richardson is a Judas for endorsing Obama, what the hell is Carville for congratulating Bush when he mocked the rule of law and patriotism by releasing Scooter Libby from paying for his conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:08 PM on 03/29/2008

James, James, James !!! What are we gonna DO with you?

Do you actually value loyalty over independent critical thinking skills?
When your friends do things you disagree with are they no longer friends?
If Hillary becomes president, are you going to go out and shill for her like this from day one?

Bill Richardson doesn't owe any of these Democratic party elites anything. In fact, just the opposite. The elites (especially the big ballers and high money rollers in the Democratic party) owe the citizens an appology for all of the arm twisting, threats, and political favors that they've offered to Super Delegates in an attempt to swing the nomination in one direction or another. In other words, I could care less whether Bill Richardson lied to those who write the big checks. What I care about is that the big check writers think that our democracy is something that they are entitled to run because they have bought and paid for it.

Mr. Carville has a problem with Mr. Richardson changing his mind. He should have shrugged his shoulders and said something like: "Oh, well. Win some, lose some." Instead, he let loose with a diatribe that was repugnant and childish. Oh, well, win some, lose some.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:32 AM on 03/29/2008

Wormy remora.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:18 AM on 03/29/2008

I am not surprised that freak Carville is such a loyal friend of the Clintons. Birds of a feather..
To insult such a good, and decent man as Richardson, shows desperation that the queen is not going to be crowned. These people are looking more and more pathetic each day.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:30 AM on 03/29/2008

Carville's rantings are so funny, because it was Hillary herself who keeps repeating, "DELEGATES (even COMMITTED ONES) CAN CHANGE THEIR MINDS.

I guess that goes for only those who are backing Obama....not HER delegates...right? They get called "disloyal," or worse yet, "Judas" if they change to Senator Obama.

She has only herself to blame. The way she and Bill are campaigning for MCCAIN, would turn any good Democrat off. I'm only surprised she hasn't lost more! The Clinton "machinery" is starting to crumble, methinks.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:32 PM on 03/29/2008

Right on, sedona. I have been very disappointed and disgusted with the referral by Bill Clinton to "A race between two Americans who love America" in such a way as to imply that Barack Obama is not an American and does not love this country. The Clintons both slipped thousands of points in my viewpoint at that, and her constant praise about mccain's "years of experience" etc., reminds me that at heart, Hillary is STILL a republican. They have both as good as said to vote for mccain if Obama ends up as the nominee.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:33 PM on 03/29/2008

people often ask ; how do carville and his wife live with each other? the picture is getting clearer; they're not that different after all.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:25 AM on 03/29/2008

I wonder why so many people who worked for the Clintons have moved to Obama? Make you wonder how many people the have screwed over the years?

If it was just one or two, 3 or even 4, I'd say, no big deal but there was a mass exodus from the Clintons. It just makes you wonder what happened?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:20 AM on 03/29/2008

The Clintons talk a good game about being rough and tumble campaigners. But as we can see, when the going gets tough, the Clintons start whining. Get some backbone Carville, you sniveling hack.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:36 AM on 03/29/2008

Oh please. Carville has more of a backbone than anyone else in the Democratic Party. It's laughable that ANYONE would use a "get a backbone" attack in defense of Bill Richardson. The guy has such "minimum structural integrity" that it's surprising he can even walk upright.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:39 AM on 03/29/2008

First the HRC campaign says that Richardon's endorsement (which they woo'd with determination) was no big deal - once they lost it - obvious sour grapes, then Carville tries to discredit Richardson, presumably to try to save the remaining Hispanic votes. The Governor had a right to endorse who he chooses. Stop making a hissy fit, because Gov. Bill decided not to play with you anymore, maybe because you dont play fair.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:23 AM on 03/29/2008

I agree -- so what if Bill Richardson had said that he planned on endorsing HRC -- he changed his mind. To me this says volumes about the Clinton campaign -- it may be in big trouble. James Carville is playing the bully here -- and I hasten to add -- he looks like a loser.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:24 AM on 03/29/2008

All politicians are subject to a change of heart, consider the case of A.G. appointments that President Clinton abandoned, Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood. These things happen in politics.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:14 PM on 03/29/2008

carville sounds more and more like a sniveling whiner... to suggest that these purely opportunists people are owed anything is laughable.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:38 PM on 03/28/2008

The hairs on Carville's head promised they would stay where they were when he was twenty years young, but alas fate and gravity changed the situation entirely. So it is with Richardson. All the huffing and puffing didn't stop him from returning to earth.

The fact is that Obama has that special it, and Clinton doesn't. The Clinton/Bush dynasty is like a leaf that has been blown between the two winds for 20 years--eventually the gravity of an electorate which won't be fooled this time brings it to rest on the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Where we can all step on it for the next 20 years.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:03 PM on 03/28/2008

Who gives a shit? Richardson finally decided he'd rather keep his soul than sell it -- big deal. It was stupid of him to make the promise, but it would have been even more stupid of him to keep it if he decided that the Clinton campaign's tactics were at odds with his personal ethics, or that Hillary Clinton simply wasn't the best person for the job.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:30 PM on 03/28/2008

Richardson didn't decide to keep his soul; he sold out for a possible spot in the Obama campaign.

James Carville was absolute right in his remarks.

While, I certainly do NOT think that Richardson should have endorsed Hillary, IF he no longer believed in her campaign, he should have remained silent until after the nomination. That's what a true friend would have done.
However, this would not have given him enough time to pursue his own interests in the VP post or a cabinet position. Now would it???

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:53 AM on 03/29/2008

He took a long time to decide the issue and reportedly nearly endorsed Hillary Clinton, so the line about "keep his soul than sell it" is a lot of bull. He gave his word, but that does not seem to be worth much.

His reason was not because of campaign tactics or personal ethics. He claimed that Obama is an exceptional, once in a lifetime leader and that is why he endorsed him.

Too bad that based on Obama's dictum that Superdelegates have to vote as their state went, he'd be able to endorse Obama, but has to vote for Hillary.... But, hey, that thing about voting as the state went is only valid for states Obama won, Clinton won states are free to choose between Clinton and what is right, right? What a hypocrit!

How does he justify it? The race was close, she won, but that is just a technicality, he is a Western governor (whatever that is) and has to show some flexibility. I call it disloyalty and hypocricy on several counts.

Bill & Hillary Clinton demand loyalty over oath of office...We have been watching this movie for 7 1/2 years with George Bush. John McCain will demand loyalty over oath of office...We can change this if only we want it...Obama for President for any chance to change this pattern.

15 and 1/2 years

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:19 AM on 03/29/2008

That sermon belongs in a church... we need real, pragmatic solutions to deal with the serious problems facing this country.....

You can't legislate the race issue...anymore than you can control the weather.. and the white guilt trip is getting old and rancid. There are many African-Americans that have achieved intellectual and financial success through their own hard work and perseverance. I agree with Bill Cosby.... "stop whining" , raise your children and improve yourselves.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:40 PM on 03/28/2008

Ok, so Bill Richardson was supposed to use the fact that he served his country as Secretary of Energy and forever honor the Clintons because it was a personal?

That is corruption at the highest level they are demanding. We made you Secretary so you better pay back. This is sad. Really sad.

Richardson serving his country was an honor, not a favor. You don't payback honor.

Clintons are exposing themselves as being blatantly corrupt individuals.

THIS IS SAD. THE CLINTONS ARE SHAMELESS.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:55 PM on 03/28/2008

AKA nepotism raised to high art. And Richardson already said he'd come close to endorsing her. Is Carville really saying anything new? He CHANGED his mind; get over it, James.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:19 PM on 03/28/2008

That makes Hillary - Jesus, and Obama - High Priest Caiaphas. Sweet Lord!

Hey Carville, the crucifixion is coming soon. Hillary's biggest PR mistake was to hire guys like Penn and Carville to be "her face", instead of using the Trader Joe's invention: hire nice, young, friendly and good looking people.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:57 PM on 03/28/2008

I thought Hillary said the superdelegates were free to make up their own minds, no matter what?

Did she mean only if they backed her?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:18 PM on 03/28/2008

Richardson wants to be on the winning team so he will be assured of a cabinet post. There for a while he thought Hillary was winning and it was obvious he was backing her. When the tide turned he switched "horses". I used to like him but I can have much admiration for a turncoat. And, yes, the Clintons put him on the map otherwise it would be Bill Richardson who?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:17 PM on 03/28/2008

Please, PLEASE listen to your own talking points, GloJo. Hillary wanted to be on the winning team, so she signed a pledge (when she thought she would have the nomination wrapped up by Super Tuesday) agreeing that MI and FL primaries/ caucauses would not be counted. She thought she didn't need them. When the tide changed, SHE switched horses, and tried to change the rules mid-election to favor HER again. Now, according to HRC, MI and FL votes MUST be counted or they're disenfranchised. Disenfranchisement was fine BEFORE, but not NOW. She NEEDS them, NOW.

I used to like her and Bill, but I have no respect for their cutthroat, poor sportsmanlike, anything goes tactics. WE put Bill Clinton on the map; otherwise, HE would only have been an unknown Arkansas governor. And.... Hillary who? Oh, please. Her husband's coattails have carried her far.

Same dishonesty with the delegates issue: Under Hillary's NEW reasoning, Bill Richardson and any other delegates and SD's SHOULD be free to switch allegiance from her to Obama, or, from Obama to her. So, why is Richardson being demonized (a turncoat???) for switching his endorsement, when all he did was take HRC's advice?

How candidates play the game DOES matter, whether they win or lose in the end. Even if Hillary ultimately wins the nomination, she will NEVER be looked upon in the same positive way again. Obama is not the only one that we are learning a lot of new information about.

Clinton's team is reflective of her own personality: bitter, angry, always ready to fight about nothing. I don't think America is interested in returning to the divisiveness and chaos of Bill Clinton's presidency with third term of these barroom brawlers. Let's get some dignity and professionalism back in the White House. The Clintons can't get along with anyone. They go around swinging roundhouse punches, not caring who they hit. They have fouled their own nest, fouled our national nest, and now seek to do it to us again.

If you didn"t already have enough evidence to figure out that Carville is to Hillary what Jeff Galooly was to Tanya Harding- in response to Senator Patrick Leahy"s comments that Hillary cannot win and should drop out, he proclaimed that the comments may hurt Obama because it will be perceived by Pennsylvania voters as a way to rob them of their vote.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:25 PM on 03/28/2008

I am speaking in context and it is a correct quote "James Carville you are creepy"
GOVERNOR Richardson can support whomever he wants, whenever wants and he does not support Hillary Clinton because she is turning the race into an ugly mess, as most Americans feel.
