Time Magazine Asks: Can Fox News Survive After The Bush Era Ends?

On super Tuesday, Bush's former brain, Karl Rove, debuted on Fox News Channel as a political analyst. Genteel, wry and armed with terabytes of political minutiae, he won critical raves. ("One of the best things in television news right now," said the New York Times, the equivalent of a Westminster Dog Show hopeful getting endorsed by Cat Fancy.) But there was something poignantly valedictory about the old warrior playing referee: the lion, if not in winter, then in a petting zoo.

Late-night talk has returned just in time for the campaign. But some of the rules have changed

You could say the same thing lately for Fox News Channel itself. Fox hasn't gone soft, but from watching its coverage lately, I get a sense that the haven for conservative hosts, and viewers alienated by liberal news, needs to figure out its next act. Fox News is not simply a mouthpiece for the Bush White House: it rose with Bush after 2000 and 9/11, was played on TVs in his White House and reflected the same surety and flag-lapel-pin confidence in its tone and star-spangled look. It was not just a hit; it was the

IN THE NEW AMERICA ..........THERE'S ALLWAYS ROOM FOR HATRED

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:04 AM on 03/31/2008

I posted something in this thread yesterday. It never made it through.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:47 AM on 03/30/2008

The list of the trash at Fox goes on forever, so I'll talk only about Hannity and the big O [the two that bug me the most]. "Gentlemen, I have some rat poison in my garage. How would you like it served?"

BTW, to anyone at Fox . . . please use my post as an example of left-wing visciousness, and how WE are the problem, and must [at all costs] be STOPPED.

Thanking you in advance, YUP
Musk

Censorship from the side complaining about "losing their civil liberties" around the terrorist surveillance program and Patriot Act.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:36 AM on 03/30/2008

Fox News crashing and burning, how appropriate would that be?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:18 AM on 03/30/2008

Of course Fox "News" will survive. The neocons will no more let it die than the Communist Party of the Soviet Union would have given up Pravda. A propaganda mouthpiece accepted as an authoritative news source by scores of millions of Americans, including the rest of the corporate media--who would let go of an asset like that? If profits get bad enough it will be subsidized, openly or under the table.

Not that I expect that. Not only Fox, but any organization, has to update its image periodically. And an organization with no concerns about substance can be that much lighter on its feet regarding style.

What if, by some miracle, Obama or Clinton wins in November? Easy-peasy. Back to all hate all the time, just like in the 90s.

McCain? Just update the "muscular triumphalism" (great phrase, that). It will be easier in a way; at least Fox won't have to pretend that their Dear Leader is a war hero. And if, like Bush today, McCain faces micron-thin and ineffectual Democratic majorities in Congress, all the better: someone to blame for everything that goes wrong, and the "bluster, blondes and blaring graphics" can be varied with an hourly Two Minute Hate.

And then, as the article mentions, there's The Base--the same thirty percent that are still prepared to do the lemming dance behind Shrub. They aren't going anywhere.

I wish I were anywhere near as confident about the country's future as I am about Fox's.

What's up with Neil Cavuto's head? I can't help but watch him. Its like a circus attraction I guess. Yesterday he claimed that the MSM was responsible for negative market returns because they harp on negative business news. DUH! People losing homes left and right, subprime meltdown causing historic damage to the dollar and our banking institutions and its the "msm". For a dude with a big freaky head, you would think there is something inside that skull but Fair and Balanced propaganda.

No.

TIME and the other news outlets that talk about FOX keep forgetting the one major factor of Fox"s success: their viewers have nowhere else to go. FOX spins the lies they want to hear, that the war is justified and going well, that the economy will be bullish and that GWB is a genius. They provide the cocoon that the Bush/Cheney delusionals need to get through the day. Because of the absence of a Fairness Doctrine, FOX can say whatever it wants without consequence, so they are able to lie through their teeth about the state of affairs, just like Limbaugh and the rest. These people are not interested in hearing the truth - they only want to hear that their opinions are the right opinions and that everyone on the network agrees with them. It"s just like Bush/Cheney only appearing before crowds of supporters - they cannot deal with someone with a dissenting opinion who may ask a question that may burst the bubble of fantasy they have worked so hard to create. The MSM is bad enough, but FOX is the crowning jewel of journalistic delusion. That is why they are successful. And when the conservative house of cards comes tumbling down, and the loyal acolytes must finally face the reality of our country being raped by Bush/Cheney and their minions, then the FOX viewers will have to wake up to that cruel reality of being wrong for so many, many years in so many, many ways.

Conservative talk radio and television THRIVED during the Clinton years, and rolled on ever since.

What did happen to Air America during the Bush years?

Ran out of gas (but not gas bags). Sssssssssssss...

New "Cleaning Products Shopping Network".

Wishful thinking by a rag that won't see many more years.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:54 PM on 03/28/2008

Hmmmm thinking more importantly....................will the US of A survive what he has done in so little time ????????

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:33 AM on 03/29/2008

I don't know about that, since Magazine in general have been last longer since the days with Puck

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:17 AM on 03/29/2008

"TIME" won't be around?

LOL

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:22 AM on 03/29/2008

I've been wondering what would happen to FOX, too, when a Democrat wins the election. I just hope they stay with the same demographic audience -- the thought of them jumping on the Democratic bandwagon gives me chills. Can you IMAGINE what they'd do with the integrity of a Democratic Congress and President if they were to suddenly switch and treat the Republicans as they've treated the Democrats? Some might think the Republicans deserve it, but the Democrats sure don't need FOX with an attitude and the lying and jeering at the other side to support them.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:13 PM on 03/28/2008

close comments, or put them through.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:54 PM on 03/28/2008

Can anyone name a show on FOX that is as overtly partisan as "Countdown" on MSNBC?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:30 PM on 03/28/2008

O'Reilly Factor, and Hannity and Colmes. You asked for 1, I gave you 2!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:38 AM on 03/31/2008

Fox News and talk radio will survive as long as there are democrats to rail against and republicans to manipulate.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:11 PM on 03/28/2008

Fox News will have the next four years of McCains presidency to cover. I don't know why you're deluding yourselves into thinking anyone else is going to be president.

Obama and Hillary are damaged goods. They've both lied too much. Her tactics, and his hypocrisy on well-covered matters disgust me to no end! This longtime Democratic supporter won't be voting for either of those two clowns come November.

Besides, I expect McCain to do a "sharp left" once he gets settled into the WH. He's said too much in the past to make me think otherwise.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:09 PM on 03/28/2008

Fir you to "think otherwise", you'd first need to have the capacity for thought.

Too bad, sonny.

You lose.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:23 AM on 03/29/2008

^ FOR

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:39 AM on 03/29/2008

Yes, because Americans have a congenital need to hate and dump on *someone* else, pick someone.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:37 PM on 03/28/2008

I sure hope so, because all the people who voted for Bush need an outlet.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:34 PM on 03/28/2008

Fox is a symptom not a cause. We have willing allowed gas bags like Rush Limbaugh and the self-annointed "best news network" et al to define our agendas, determine our priorities, and shape our opinions. With Bush gone they'll thrive. Instead of taking a breather to pat that clown on the back, they'll be able to drub democrats 24/7.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:32 PM on 03/28/2008

You are right. Fox is a symptom not a cause. So is Rush.

The free market developed its own check against the dominant liberal media when Rush began his show on the rarely listened to AM airwaves in 1988. If the media had simply policed themselves and offered equal time to countering viewpoints, then Rush would have never succeeded.

And when the dominant liberal media continued on the networks without changing their ways, it paved the way for Fox news, which has the lousiest low graphics presentation in network news to dominate cable news programming.

Fox news and talk radio will go away as soon as the public trusts mainstream news and other media. Not until then.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:36 PM on 03/28/2008

FOX's ratings will decline, but it will survive, especially if a democrat is in office with a democratic controlled congress. There's bound to be enough ineptitude, scandal and fodder for FOX to cover (though hopefully not as much as in the current administration).

FOX, CNN and MSNBC - the Bush, Clinton and Obama networks, respectively - will all continue to receive declining ratings as more people utilize the web for information gathering and fact finding. Is it any wonder why these so-called "news" networks emphasize more entertainment and sensationalism in their programming than ever before? Case in point: the democratic primary is not at all close. Barring an act of God, Clinton cannot win. Yet these media organizations keep touting the race as a virtual tie, trying desperately to keep their viewers in suspense.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:10 PM on 03/28/2008

god, I hope not!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:47 PM on 03/28/2008

i certainly hope it does not survive. It should go the same direction the dinosaurs went.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:02 PM on 03/28/2008

Fox news will go when their viewers start losing their jobs and their houses. These people fox viewers, only care about themselves.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:09 PM on 03/28/2008

I thought all Republicans were rich and greedy? Therefore we won't be losing our houses.

Who is the greedy party by the way? Obama making 300k per year and only donating $3500 to charity. The man won't put his money where his mouth is but he wants you to help out those causes.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:07 PM on 03/28/2008

Your attempt at dragging Obama's charity into your comments on Fox's death spin show YOU to be the biggest tool ever brought out of the FOX machine.

I don't watch Fox News so it doesn't bother me at all. It is a mouthpiece for the right and I am left. Simple.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:55 PM on 03/28/2008

Very simple

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:42 PM on 03/28/2008

Straight from the horse's ass.

I think when the Telecom ACT is repealed. They're going to take themselves down by their incompentence.

"America's Chickens are Coming Home to Roost". "We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye. We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards."

Who can possibly dare to complain?
