Senator Leahy To Clinton: Drop Out

Senator Leahy To Clinton: Drop Out

ABC News   |   March 28, 2008 10:13 AM

** NEW UPDATES BELOW **

Obama-backing Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT) has become among the most senior Democrats to explicitly call for Sen. Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race:

In an interview on Vermont Public Radio, said "There is no way that Senator Clinton is going to win enough delegates to get the nomination. She ought to withdraw and she ought to be backing Senator Obama. Now, obviously that's a decision that only she can make frankly I feel that she would have a tremendous career in the Senate."

Leahy said he was fretting about the impact of the protracted Democratic race.

"I am very concerned," he said. "John McCain, who has been making one gaffe after another, is getting a free ride on it because Senator Obama and Senator Clinton have to fight with each other. I think that her criticism is hurting him more than anything John McCain has said. I think that's unfortunate."

UPDATE: Leahy has released a new statement phrasing the issue in a softer tone (and without a call for Clinton to drop out):

Any clear-eyed appraisal of the campaign at this stage adds up to two conclusions:

The bottom line is that, first, Senator Obama continues to hold a lead that appears to be insurmountable, and recent indications are that more and more unpledged delegates have begun to add their support to his column.

And second, John McCain, who has been making one mistake after another, is getting a free ride on those gaffes, because the Democratic candidates have to focus not on him but on each other.

Senator Casey's endorsement of Senator Obama in Pennsylvania is the latest sign of how the race is going.

A Democratic victory in November is important to the future and to the change in course that the American people want and deserve. The last thing the American people need is for Senator McCain to continue a third term for President Bush.

Senator Clinton has every right, but not a very good reason, to remain a candidate for as long as she wants to. As far as the delegate count and the interests of a Democratic victory in November go, there is not a very good reason for drawing this out. But as I have said before, that is a decision that only she can make.

Senator Clinton has begun a tremendous career in the Senate, and she has a bright future ahead of her. She faces difficult decisions ahead, and I wish her the best.

Also, the Clinton campaign released statements from their top Pennsylvania supporters:

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell: 'To call for an end to this race before the people of Pennsylvania have had a chance to make their views known is wrong and a disservice to millions of Democrats.' "I respect Senator Leahy and like him very much but as the governor of one of America's largest states, I am disappointed in his comments. By virtually every measure, this race is neck and neck with less than 1% of the more than 27 million votes cast forming the difference between the two candidates. To call for an end to this race before the people of Pennsylvania have had a chance to make their views known is wrong and a disservice to millions of Democrats." [Statement from Gov. Ed Rendell, thepage.time.com, 3/28/08]

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter: 'What [Sen. Leahy's] proposing would be like calling a baseball game in the 7th inning. Let's play this out... I think it's important not only that our concerns be discussed, but that our voices be heard and our votes be counted. "While I appreciate the loyalty Senator Leahy feels to Senator Obama and the concern he may have about his candidate's ability to win, what he's proposing would be like calling a baseball game in the 7th inning. Let's play this out. We have yet to have a real discussion about the issues at stake in cities like Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Scranton and I think it's important not only that our concerns be discussed, but that our voices be heard and our votes be counted. That's democracy. There is no reason whatsoever to disenfranchise Philadelphians and deprive them of their right to participate in our democratic process." [Statement from Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, 3/28/08]

I am an Obama supporter and I don't believe anybody, as of now, should be talking about Hillary quitting. I used to think that but now it's too late, doing so is just to play into the hands of "Operation Chaos." Letting the race run its course Obama can win the Presidential nomination against McCain with only two months. It is not how much time he has to run against the Republican but the quality of time and message. Whatever is in the works will be in the final run.

NONE OF THE BACK-AND FORTH MATTERS--BARACK OBAMA is the next POTUS--PERIOD. Why else would Mr. Cheney, Barack's cousin, thank Patrick Leahy? Because he knows the afore-mentioned statement to be true. Barack has the unfettered support of his other cousins George Bush Sr and Jr, along with Condi Rice and Colin Powell and they will see to it that he is not only the Democratic nominee but also the next President. No amount of arguing, bickering and name-calling will change the inevitable fact that the President has ALREADY BEEN CHOSEN and that right now, we're just going through the preliminaries.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:15 AM on 04/01/2008

Dick Cheney thanks Sen Leahy.

The Senator from Vermont has decided to F@@# himself, the Democratic party and the country with his polemic in favor of Wall Street's preferred Dem loser Sen Obama.

In the Howard Dean era--show me the money--is the slogan of the Dem party's well-financed right-wing--all of whom have endorsed Obama--except Joe Lieberman.

Joe Lieberman is a Gore-whore and like Fat Albert--requires a larger bribe than most.

Unless McCain or Bloomberg pays more..

When is Obama's book about how he and his supporters have acted during this election going to be released?
It is entitled "The Audacity of Audacity"

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:48 PM on 03/31/2008

Amen!

The Audacity of Audacity is a perfect title.

Obama wants everyone to kiss his a-- the way his cult does. No way in he!! Leave the DEM race now loser!

Maybe he should join Rev. Wright. Somewhere out of the country!

The news media has been making up the news for a long time instead of reporting
the news as they should. I am sick and tired of them (the media) trying to dictate or
influence this election cycle for their own greed. Hillary Clinton is not trailing in delegates
or the popular vote by such a large margin that she should drop out of the race. Something
must be done also with Michigan and Florida. Those states did vote already. The Senator
from Illinois was on the Michigan ballot at one time, but choose to remove it. That just shows how
he made a error in judgment to me. No wonder he does not want those votes counted.
There is a few states also remaining to hold their elections to send delegates for either
candidate to Denver. Hillary Clinton should stay in the race. She should be awarded all the
delegates and votes that were cast for her in Michigan and Florida and any future
primaries. Then we shall see what happens when the convention starts. I think neither
candidate will obtain the 2024 delegates to win outright. So it will wind up being a floor fight.
There is going to be at least a second ballot or more. I believe the delegates only are committed
on a first ballot. So who knows what will happen.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:32 PM on 03/31/2008

why do Obama and his supporters hate democracy so much. Why don't they want Americans to vote. We just had a president that tried to take away are rights, now we are trying to elect another one. Maybe we should anoint him and be done with it. To hell with this democracy crap, that must be part of the politics of hope and change.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:32 PM on 03/30/2008

For god's sake educate yourself before spewing ignorant and uninformed crap. Do you not have a brain of your own?

Hillary doesnt give a crap for your vote. She intend to overturn ALL the votes at the convention, as that is the only way she can get the nomination.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:33 PM on 03/31/2008

Obama hate's democracy? Then how come Hillary's the one who wants superdelegates to decide this thing?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:16 PM on 03/31/2008

What do John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Patrick Leahy, Gary Hart, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd all have in common? They all ran for the Presidency and failed to gain the Democratic nomination and suffered humiliation and defeat.

Bill Clinton is the only Democrat elected for two terms since FDR - that his a 60 to70 drought on the Democrats to get the office of President for two terms in a row by any one person.

So, the fact that Hillary Clinton will give the Clinton's another 4 years has got to have enraged into a jealous, spiteful and envious rage against the Clintons. Obama has captialized on hatred to get to where he is at, learning well from the cult movement in the church of Rev. Wright.

He has capitlized on Blacks hatred of whites, hatred of women, anti-authority hatred among youths, and yes, jealously of the Clintons among the Democratic leaders who all wanted to President at one time in their careers and failed.

Obama has shown on more than one occassion he can rally hate to his side, over and over again, as GW Bush used fear to get elected.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:00 PM on 03/30/2008

What you forgot to mention was he is also trying to capitalize on the nation's thirst for change. How does Hillary represent change? It is amazing how people like you say he has injected race into the campaign when he has tried to steer clear of it all along. When he was confronted with the situation about Rev Wright, he addressed it straight forward and didn't dodge it like Hillary would. She would first check the polls to see how she would benefit from it and then say some BS about a situation. Or maybe she would just embellish it to make herself look good only to say she misspoke later on.

Hillary has tried to capitalize from the sympathy of other women the entire time with her crying when she was behind before NH, whining about being asked the first question at debates, she even stated in one of the debates this election would definitely be about change if a woman became president. Obama has never once said how the election would be a big change if a black person became president

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:41 PM on 03/31/2008

Don't forget Howard Dean. He also did not get to be president and he is dammed if he is going to let a woman be president.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:44 PM on 03/31/2008

Senator Leahy is out of touch and should stay out of the democratic process ! Pennsylvania would like their voices heard, as well as Indiana etc.etc.etc. There is less then a 1% difference between Clinton and Obama in the popular vote, this election is not over on any grounds and Obama has certainly not shown himself electable in the main election against McCain ! Senator Leahy should go back to sleeeeeep ! If he wants to talk he should speak up about Florida and Michigan and making sure that is resolved before the convention !

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:26 AM on 03/30/2008

I get tired of this. There IS NO VALID popular vote. FOUR states did not even submit numbers. All that can be done is to "guess", and I am sorry, you do not decide elections by "guessing" the number of votes. And especially not when there is a prefectly valid and accurate measure already in place by the rules.

Pledged delegates ARE proportional AND representational. Just b/c Clinton is upset she is losing doesn't mean it is reasonable to change the rules over to something that suits her better. Grow the heck up - or do you always think it is fine to cheat to win?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:27 PM on 03/31/2008

What is YOUR Problem, Dude? You really believe there's "...less than 1% difference between Clinton and Obama in the popular vote..."? Tell me where you got that figure, Ma'am! Just reached down and grabbed it, Huh?

Are you really going to vote for McCain just because our Guy Barak is making Your Girl Hilly look like a Fool? It is certainly NOT Obama's fault that HRC has become embittered at being Bested by a superior candidate, is it? Isn't that what its all about?

HILLARY IS BASICALLY TIED WITH OBAMA COUNTING FL AND MI. OBAMA IS A LOSER FOR SPITTING ON THE VOTERS FROM FL AND MI. COUNT THE VOTES OR RE VOTE.

LET THE VOTES BE COUNTED OBAMA OR GO HOME!!!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:57 PM on 03/31/2008

You want Michigan counted where Obama wasn't on the ballot?!?! That's the "democracy" you had in mind?

In an interview on New Hampshire Public Radio last fall, Clinton explained why she was the only candidate who did not agree to New Hampshire's request that she take her name off the ballot in Michigan.
"IT'S CLEAR: THIS ELECTION THEY'RE HAVING IS NOT GOING TO COUNT FOR ANYTHING. I PERSONALLY DID NOT THINK IT MADE ANY DIFFERENCE WHETHER OR NOT MY NAME WAS ON THE BALLOT," she said.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:15 PM on 03/31/2008

I know, this is the damnedest thing I have ever seen. They somehow beleive that not only is MI "fair" even though he wasn't on the ballot, but that he's somehow "deserted" them by following the rules and doing the right and ethical thing.

I have never seen irrational thinking to this degree ever before.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:29 PM on 03/31/2008

Obama is ahead by 700,00 votes, it's not hard to find that fact on the internet. I can' tell you that I'm really going to vote 3rd party. Obama supporters and his campaign are the most divisive I have ever seen. The last poll I saw has the number of dems who will vote for McCain at 28% because of their dislike of how Obama has behaved. I hope that numbers grows, good luck in November, maybe you guys shouldn't have been quite so nasty. You can't win without us!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:35 PM on 03/30/2008

You know what? I hate mac enthusiasts, but I own a mac and I love it. Just because you have a problem with the fanboys, doesn't mean the product isn't superior. Same's true with candidates. Sure, a lot of Obama's supporters are intellectual snobs and misogynists, but a lot of Clinton's supporters are racist, angry women. Ignore the supporters, and focus on the candidate.

Besides, what exactly has Obama been saying that's "divisive"?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:53 PM on 03/31/2008

Nothing..they can never answer that. Don't forget, these sheep learn from Clinton, who is the master of pointing a finger while doing the very thing she is condemning.

So..they run from thread to thread calling everyone Obamabots, dismissing reasonable facts presented reasonably, spreading misinformation and "Creative math", and screaming racist crap, then they point the finger and call the Obama people the mean and divisive ones.

They project. Its really a fascinating phenomenon.

I am sorry when my direst predictions come true. At the outset of Ms. Clinton's campaign I wrote cautioning her to reconsider running in light of all that is at stake. I regret ALL of what I foresaw has happened. It's win-at-all-costs even if that means allowing Mr. McCain to continue his campaign for the 'general' election while the Democrats still carry on a damaging 'primary' campaign. The wide perception is that the whole thing is now just about HER. Nothing that helps the people. Where is the confrontation to Mr. McCain, his lack of understanding of the world? Where is the confrontation with the real enemy bringing this nation to economic ruin and into disrepute in the world. The damage which the Republican years have brought us is not being discussed because competitiveness is preventing it. If the candidate persists in this course there will be so much resentment that a McCain presidency is a very real possibility. If that happens the people will end Clinton's political career. Dropping out might seem unpalatable to her now but it will do more for her in the long run than her campaign of "win-at-all-costs". The cost for that "win" is unacceptably high. She will find in the end, she will have nothing to show for it. We NEED her in the Senate to help rebuild the democracy and liberty that these Republicans have torn to shreds.

As an Obama supporter I think Hillary Clinton should stay in the race until the citizens of each state and territory has voted. And while Florida and Michigan voters have been excluded from this process, I hope there is a way their votes are counted. As a 36 year old first time voter in any presidential primary, I am thrilled to have had an opportunity to finally put my two cents in about who I want to be the next president.

This is not as much about Hillary Clinton as it is about voters having a stake in this process. Obama has run his campaign asking all Americans to take part in what goes on with our government. This is the first step- deciding who we want as our nominee.

The media is always wrong: McCain is dead in the water. Hillary had it sewn up in October. Huckabee isn't a factor. Obama will win NH. Obama will win Calif. Whatever the so called experts in the media think, it always seems to go in a different direction.

Now we have the party being torn apart in APRIL for god sakes. Voters are being allowed to vote. Senator Clinton is too close to get out. Anything could happen in politics. Who knows what could come out about Obama. Look at Hillary's lies about Bosnia. Who could have predicted that and that it woud hurt her more then the Reverend Wright controversy did to Obama?

The bottom line is if Obama supporters and Clinton supporters get mad because their candidate didn't win (waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh)and want to behave like children and vote for a candidate out of spite and not on the issues Democrats believe in, then so be it.

Go ahead I dare any Clinton or Obama supporter to vote for a 3rd Bush term and then have to live with the catastrophic results that could follow. I support Senator Obama but if Super Delegates decide it's Clinton they want (THATS THE RULE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, JUST LIKE THE MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA CONTROVERSY, FOLLOW THE FREEKIN RULES)then I will vote for Senator Clinton because I don't want the blood of more troops on my hands, which could happen if McCain gets in. NO MORE WAR.

Hillary nor Obama should drop out. This nomination is still wide open. Florida and Michigan delegates MUST and WILL have their say. I have two solutions for the Florida and Michigan Delegates:

1) Seat them all at the convention, but, unlike all other delegates, they should be "unpledged" on the first vote. Perhaps they can pledge by a certain date, so we can see if Hillary is truly viable.

2) Or allow the delegates of the two states to vote in the second and subsequent rounds of voting, but not in the first, which is likely to be deadlocked.

The delegates will all be mercilessly pursued! That's Democracy
