Robert Mugabe was desperately attempting to cling to power tonight despite his clear defeat in Zimbabwe's presidential election by blocking the electoral commission from releasing official results and threatening to treat an opposition claim of victory as a coup.

The Movement for Democratic Change said that what it regards as the overwhelming win by its candidate for president, Morgan Tsvangirai, is "under threat" despite growing support from foreign monitors for its claim of victory.

The party also said it had "security concerns" after a police raid on its election offices today, and Tsvangirai made no public appearances apparently out of concern for his safety.

Mugabe's spokesman, George Charamba, warned Tsvangirai not to declare himself president because that "is called a coup d'etat and we all know how coups are handled".

But sources close to the MDC said that the party leadership has put out feelers to the military and elements of the ruling Zanu-PF to try and arrange a peaceful transfer of power.

Independent monitoring groups said that returns posted at about two-thirds of polling stations gave Tsvangirai 55% of the vote to Mugabe's 36%. The monitors said there is no way now for the president, who even lost in his home territory of Mashonaland as well as other former strongholds, to legitimately win the election.

A third presidential candidate, Simba Makoni, a former finance minister who broke with Mugabe, took about 9%.

Zanu-PF also suffered losses in the parliamentary election with at least nine members of its politburo losing their seats including the vice president, Joice Mujuru, and the defence, information and education ministers.

36% suppport Mugabe. 31% support Bush.

Now, you have to allow for a few percent who really truly support someone for logical, self-serving reasons, but there aren't that many people who directly benefit from failed leadership.

Conclusion: around 25% of the human race is just plain stupid.

South Africa should take a long look at Zimbabwe, for this is their future.

Independent monitoring groups: Mr. Mugabe, you came in second with 36% of the votes.
Robert Mugabe: So?

Mugabe and George Bush sorta operate in the same way---hold that their own off kilter verson of reality is real and don't pay any attention to the way things truly are and then blithely go on as if all were peachy-keen.

He's got billions socked away, he's just planning his escape before results are released. He knows if he doens't get out with the money, the new government will seize it.

Ah no problem then he can just bag it and immigrate to the US. He can hang with Pat Robertson for awhile.

In my neighborhood, one can typically see vans parked on major thoroughfares emblazoned with pro-Mugabe posters. This is not just in election season -- they're out there year-round. The major theme seems to be that Mugabe is a great liberator of Africa, that anybody who says otherwise is a puppet of the U.S. Government, which wants to keep the black man down, and that any ill effects felt by the people of Zimbabwe are the result of U.S. manipulation and skullduggery.

I've always suspected that most people who see this nonsense believe it.

Sad. Mugabe took his country from being an exporter of food to one where people are always on the verge of famine. The best way to "keep the black man down" is to starve him, and that's what Mugabe's done.

"The MDC says it is fighting to save Zimbabwe's economy.

The country has the world's highest inflation rate, at more than 100,000%, and just one adult in five is believed to have a regular job."

It appears that they do have somewhat of a problem with their economy.

Mugabe has been a nightmare for the people of Zimbabwe. The faster he's gone, the better it will be for the country. I'd go further and say that both Mugabe and Bush are cut from the same cloth (power-hungry, paranoid sociopaths), but it actually looks like Bush can't wait to get out of Washington and go cut brush. Good riddance to both of them.

Is everyone in America so interested in Hillary vs. Obama that they can't pay attention to any other election?

I think this is news.

Am I wrong?

Mugabe looks a little bit like Pastor Wright. I know they have the same feelings towards white people.

Maybe Mugabee and Hillary should get together and talk about the will of the people versus their own destructive will to power. . .

Does anyone actually believe that Mugabe will just walk away from and surrender power?
He will not this is the 3rd election that he has lost and he still is in power. Why even have elections? what a waste of time.
Mugabe will stay in power until he dies.

We'll see. I'm waiting patiently to see what the verdict will be.

I felt faint when I read this article...I really thought that they said he had lost....I cannot sleep I am waiting for the 15 mins to pass...apparently they are announcing the results at 6.00. Of course they will resist...but he better rewind to the days of Nicolae Ceauşescu whom the revolutionaries killed after holding a two hour trial and sentenced him to death for crimes against the state, genocide, and "undermining the national economy" - which Mugabe has done. He created the little monsters in the army - now watch as they eat him alive. He better get to moving. My friends were saying he has fled to the Far East - we laughed at the prospect but it could be true. Woe to another dictator - the Ethiopian Haile Maryam who is hiding in Zimbabwe - well not quite hiding but living well. I hope he took him too.
