In a candid conversation with an audience here at the Aspen Environment Forum, eminent biologist/naturalist EO Wilson said soccer moms are killing off bio-education because they don't let their children experience nature.

In what he calls the "soccer mom syndrome" Wilson said the worst thing a parent can do for a child is to take him or her to a botanical garden where all the trees are marked and labeled. Instead, "Go to the seashore and give them a pale and bucket. Let them experience nature...and then come back and ask questions," Wilson said, admittedly paraphrasing Rachel Carson's advice. Carson famously wrote the book "Silent Spring."

I think he makes a good point about soccer moms.
I've also read on here how kids will just compalin about not having technology like Playstations or XBoxs around...
But those people are missing the point..You don't just plop a kid down outside. You yourself have to take an interest in nature too to pass that onto your kids. You have to be excited and curious enough about it and try to look at nature and the world through THEIR eyes--NOT YOUR OWN.
That's what keeps you young at heart-that's what keeps those lines of comminication up with your kids-that's where they learn from YOUR example, that's where they learn respect for nature and the environment and become part of it as well..
This is something they can't learn from videos or classes.
That is the point he was trying to make.

Whoa! I just realized that this is supposed to be something of a "science" section for Huffington...? And this is how you begin by displaying the collective ignorance of the editiors? Wow...the point that the readership could use some enlightening on science has never been better made that this article, but it's hard to imagine the same stupid and lazy editors doing so much as stumbling over their own crippling ineptitude...but good luck on that.

This is an example of the media taking a rhetorical point and reinterpreting it in the literal sense in order to generate controversy and readership. Sadly, it is being used to defame one of the world's greatest advocates of education and protection of the environment to do little more than generate buzz for some pathetic and decidedly less capable writer. When this technique is used, whether by the left or right, it only brings down the level of discussion and makes us all stupid, which in a nutshell, is very much like what we see in our national debate on everything from climate to the presidency. It's disappointing to find it here in the Huffington Post. It does a disservice to the editors and their readership.

Go to the seashore and give them a bucket to play in the sand? Is he insane???? With all the needles, broken glass and urine from drunks on the beach, there is no way I'd let a small child dig in the sand unless it was at my own private beach.

And you'd police your private beach from illegally dumped medical waste how, exactly?

LISTEN UP, SOCCER MOMS!!! Creation is no gentle place and the illusion of safety is just that: an illusion. Over-protecting your children is the same as locking them a germ-free plastic bubble until adulthood. When they do get out (and they will eventually), they will have no immune system to face dangers(s)/evil(s)/germs. If your child takes no risks and is never exposed to thinking under crisis, they will be prey, not predators, for the physical dangers inherent in nature and the evils we as a species visit upon each other. Your successful survival trait (protection of young) is malfunctioning and/or outmoded. This is evolution in action. Change over time dancing with environment and biology. However, as creatures of free will, you have a choice: Act on evolution or have evolution act upon your children (and you and the rest of us for that matter, but no pressure). PREPARE your children, don't HIDE them. You'll being doing them and us a service. And another thing,

HANG UP AND DRIVE!

Thanks.

Its about time liberal blogs like Huffington Post added a "Science" section. We all know that the right is science's biggest enemy, but if those of us on the left don't appreciate the value of science in our culture, then there is something seriously wrong with America.

Aye, Cap'n! A Science section would be a most welcome addition to the crew! And if you need a science editor, you have my addy . . .

I'm up for a science section too. And to add to the discussion there was an article by Diamond in Science recently about the importance of creative play/role playing towards learning social skills. The overbooked soccer kids of today will be tomorrow's low lifes.
