The website for Sen. Barack Obama's church -- Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago -- not long ago described the "Black Value System" in the "About Us" section of its website.

And it used to provide a link to the Trumpet Magazine that once gave an award to Louis Farrakhan -- a magazine published by Rev. Jeremiah Wright's daughter.

No longer.

You can see the old webpage, including both the Black Value System and a link to Trumpet HERE

Interestingly, Trumpet used to have a web presence and now it doesn't seem to.

There's a link to the "Black Value System" at the bottome of the church's home page. Sean Hannity told the same lie, about Trinity "scrubbing" it's website, weeks ago.

On Trinity's HOME PAGE http://www.tucc.org/home.htm there is a link to http://www.tucc.org/black_value_system.html.

The linked page describes the Black Value System that Trinity adopted, with its 12 Black Ethics which "must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered":

1 Commitment to God
2 Commitment to the Black Community
3 Commitment to the Black Family
4 Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
5 Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
6 Adherence to the Black Work Ethic
7 Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
8 Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"
9 Pledge to Make the Fruits of All Developing and Acquired skills Available to the Black Community
10 Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions
11 Pledge Allegiance to All Black Leadership Who Espouse and Embrace the Black Value System
12 Personal Commitment to Embracement of the Black Value System

Trinity just no longer lists the Black Ethics on its About Us page.

AnninCA

You and people like KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BLACK AMERICAN CHURCHES. You never even heard about it until a couple weeks ago and now you think you are an expert.

Try not to speak about things you know nothing about..

You are very "typical".

"You and people like KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BLACK AMERICAN CHURCHES."

This of course is in light of African Americans being a diverse demographic group that can't be encapsulated or boiled down to a singular or oversimplified category of people. So, of course all black churches must be similar. ;-)

I don't agree with the original comment, but to try and beat back a position rooted in binary logic with more binary logic just doesn't do anything for your argument, as much as I may agree with where you were coming from.

(1) This is old news.

(2) Tapper needs to stop being a conspiracy theorist.

Trinity's "Black Value System" was written and adopted in 1981 --- that's 27 years ago. No church can continue to thrive that does not, from time to time, update its statements of faith, values, and mission to reflect the current realities both of its membership and of the social, cultural, economic, and political environment in which it seeks to do its work.

My guess is that, by the time Trinity launched a Web site --- 10 years after 1981? 15 years? 20 years? --- the percentage of people in the church who believed that the Black Value System already had outlived its usefulness had increased considerably, even as those who were most heavily invested in the statement's original adoption --- presumably including Wright --- were determined to see it preserved and broadcast online.

More likely than that Trinity is engaged in some nefarious "scrubbing" project is that Wright's retirement has provided the church with an opportunity to retire the Black Value System as a guiding statement, and that the "United Church of Christ Statement of Faith in the form of a doxology" that now resides on the church's About Us page is a new statement that reflects the new leadership of the church's new pastor, Otis Moss.

"Reporters" like Tapper need to stop hunting for witches where they don't exist. This is "gotcha journalism," at its worst.

Who the hell cares? What does this have to do with politics? It has nothing to do win Obama, quit being Fox News.

And if I was being attacked by a bigoted and one-sided media I'd clam up too. Read this article, it says it all:

Rest assured, dora. The repubes have had any information available about this church long, long ago. And rest assured, as well, Rove and company has paid some nebish college repube to sit and watch every second of every sermon Wright has ever given. As I said earlier. The Clintons have been Leon Spinks with Obama. He's about to come up against the Great Ali. The repubes don't play fair. Never have. Never will.

Hoover's contempt for King

On a story about King receiving the St. Francis peace medal from the Catholic Church, he wrote "this is disgusting." On the story "King, Pope to Talk on Race," he scribbled "astounding." On a story about King's meeting with the pope, "I am amazed that the Pope gave an audience to such a degenerate." On a story about King being the heavy favorite to win the Nobel Prize, he wrote "King could well qualify for the 'top alley cat' prize!"

When King learned he would be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, the FBI decided to take its harassment of King one step further, sending him an insulting and threatening note anonymously. A draft was found in the FBI files years later. In it the FBI wrote, "You are a colossal fraud and an evil, vicious one at that." The letter went on to say, "The American public ... will know you for what you are -- an evil, abnormal beast," and "Satan could not do more."

The letter's threat was ominous, if not specific: "King you are done." Some have theorized the intent of the letter was to drive King to commit suicide in order to avoid personal embarrassment. "King, there is only one thing left for you to do," the letter concluded. "You know what it is ... You better take it before your filthy, abnormal fraudulent self is bared to the nation."

And that is the history of America.

The greatest con marketing in the western hemisphere. America is great. No wonder some are upset because Rev Wright is pulling away the curtain and scraping the scab of the wound. Those who criticize him must deal with it.

Again, Wright is not running for President but i would love to have the debate to tell some of them how hypocritical they are when it comes to race relations. Most black leaders built their following by fighting for equality and justice. Why is that a bad thing? Lets start there.

Hoover was just mad because he thought his favorite dress wouldn't be pretty enough to attract Rev. King.

Let's scrape some Collective mental offour Boots.
first this country was not founded 'exclusively' for Christians.
Consider Catholics had the most powerful Orgnaized relgion, In Second Place Protestants who follow the english Church, Nor those of th emuslim faith. these Relgions had Safe "Havens' fro their followers
Being from a Ancestory of Jacobites and Coventants- they were being slaughtered by these larger more Powerful Religious Orgnaizations (Flee or Die). So this country was founded on Relgious Freedom depends on the Religion you follow (some who came were the Oppressors)
The Reason for the mass Immigration to our Country was Economic Freedom from the shackles of the governing Bodies who included such doctrines in to their Decsion making Process. The people who made thoe journeys were looking for a Country where Labor and Philosophy were in each persons hands. Not the 'States' Nor the 'Ordained'. The chains which our forefathers risked theri lives to break free of are being once again Applied to our 'Great Experiement"- for the People and By the eople. That is what brought these Brave and Honorable people to become AmericaNs

WHY in the hell is a church website in the news???? WTF is going on? Clinton sits cozily with Doug Coe's extreme-right-wing cabal (hey folks - imagine Supreme Court appointments influenced by the Fellowship--that is to say, by the most extreme religious nuts of the GOP), while Rev. Wright is scrubbed harder than a goddamned candidate for President, Vice, Congress...This is asinine and pathetic. Pat Robertson and James Dobson and all the rest, meanwhile, are enjoying this horseshit.

I can't believe Obama really thought he could get past the Repugs and racists , running as a post racial candidate, with this church in his recent history. Unlikely that Karl Rove wouldn't milk this for all it's worth?

Can this church , given it's own " Black Value System "which involves supporting the black community, the black family, black institutions.commitment to Africa , development of members skills to be made availalbe to the black community be construed by the general public as supporting all color of Americans?

What's more ,can these members really support Obama?.After all, this pledge involves allegience to black leadership who support the Black "Value System".B.O. just threw Rev W years of work under the bus , as well as Rev W's talking points.

And... he/his campaign deemed the Clinton's racist for using the word "black" and insulting him by mentioning an A.A. Civil Rights fighter, Jesse Jackson, Does this show allegience to the Black Value system?

I mean, who can blame them really? They've had an invasion of media camped on their doorstep/pulpit since these BS stories broke; everything about the church has been scrutinized and put under a microscope. Reverend Wright's new home site has been featured on evening gossip rag shows. I can imagine that they'd want to return to some semblance of normalcy for their congregation and if "scrubbing" their sites allows them to get a start then so be it. Separation between church and state.

Hey look ABC attacking Obama again over nothing, i willing to bet the Clinton campaign told them to push this out.

And Leahy and Richardson aren't given directions with "hillary should drop out" by Obama? Seriously. The Trinity Church website has changed it's content, just prior to the news story's of Wright. The Obama campaign did a controlled release to the news media to get the Rev. Wright story out now, rather than later. Trinity Church is a major and respected church here in Chicago and there are no secrets about the mission and sermons. However, knowing how white america would react, the Obama campaign wisely took measure to have a speech prepared, have Rev. Wright's unusual early retirement set up, etc long before this story ran. This is intelligent politics, and as a current Hillary supporter, frankly, brilliant. I will be happy to support my Senator come November if he wins the nomination. It's politics as usual, and i don't find politics to be a naughty word.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:26 AM on 04/01/2008

only a die-hard 'obamaniac' would equate a 'question' with an 'attack'...much like they equate 'criticism' with 'racism'

I dont trust ABC for a few reasons, one being they were the first major news network to start this BS with wright. I also dont trust them for their website site. Check out their politics section on their website, for there popular vote count they include MI and FL, they also dont even mention that is what they are doing, they are the only ones to my knowledge that does this.

TUCC broadcasts from 7:30 to 8 every Sunday morning on TVone (channel 328 on DirecTV, channel 123 on DISH network). While I only started watching 2 weeks ago, they've had a promo for Trumpet at the end of the show both times.

And the page on the website is still up.
