HANOI, Vietnam — More than 20,000 Vietnamese workers have walked off the job at a Taiwanese-owned plant that makes shoes for Nike Inc., demanding higher pay to keep pace with skyrocketing prices, officials said Tuesday.

The workers at Ching Luh plant, in southern Long An province, went on strike Monday. They want a 20 percent bump to their $59 average monthly salaries along with better lunches at the company cafeteria, said Nguyen Van Thua, an official with the province's trade union.

The plant has been making sneakers since 2002 and employs about 21,000 workers, most of them young rural women. The company is paying the workers 14 percent more than minimum wage, but soaring inflation is eroding their earnings, Thua said.

"The company has followed the Vietnamese laws in paying their workers, but given the fact that consumer prices are soaring day by day, the workers have had troubles with their daily expenses," Thua said.

Ching Luh plant is one of 10 factories that contract with Nike to produce sneakers in Vietnam. Nike's contractors in Vietnam make about 75 million pairs of shoes each year, and the Ching Luh plant accounts for about 12 percent, said Nike spokesman Chris Helzer.

"We recognize the impact that rising inflation has had on the people of Vietnam, and hope the situation will be resolved quickly and amicably," he said.

Consumer prices in Vietnam are 19 percent higher than they were a year ago, according to government figures. Hanoi responded in January by increasing the minimum wage foreign-owned companies are required to pay by roughly 13 percent.

As inflation has picked up in recent years, strikes have become more common, with workers demanding higher pay and better working conditions.

"the workers have had difficulties with their daily activities" oh things like living and eating...you know little things like that. Funny how similar that sounds like Amerika with workers homes foreclosed on in record numbers, 28 million on food stamps, 47 million without healthcare, a negative savings rate..... globalization ... a lovely program of worker exploitation for profit MARGINs, not just profit.

Many years ago Ms. magazine did an excellent expose on the Nike corporation. And it has been many, many years since I have bought a Nike product.
What part of the $100 price tag of Nike shoes goes to the people who actually make them?
Not much.
Most of it goes to the sports stars who shill for the product.
I don't understand how anyone would want to give their hard earned money to corporations like these.
I once worked at an ad agency where one of the clients was a was tennis shoe company....not a brand name, just cheap sneakers. And you know what?
There is very little to NO difference between an expensive pair of Nikes and lower cost shoes.
I actually saw cutaways of the shoes. Same materials.
The only difference is, when you pay for Nike shoes, a huge percentage of the price you pay is going for advertising, marketing and of course the lavish lifestyles of the CEO's.
It's a a free country though...if you don't mind putting money into their overstuffed pockets then go right on ahead.
They're the ones laughing all the way to the bank and those sneakers that you just paid 3 figures for will not last any longer than ones you could have gotten for less than half that.
Advertisers and their clients depend on the sheeple of the world to keep themselves in yachts and caviar.

You are going to see more and more of this from SEA, especially with the rising cost of fuel and rice. These people are going to want a decent wage and will take drastic measures to get it. I say good for them. Of course then the factories will close and move to Africa or a place with cheaper labor cost.

ruh-roh...Somebody bucking one of our big corporations?

What do you suppose the chances are that Cheney will shortly suggest that Vietnam is harboring Al Qaeda factions who are promoting suicide bombings?

lollll...the general theme worked so well for Bush, Cheney, & PNAC, LLP in Iraq that China is using the line on Tibet, now...

Who says we lost the Vietnam War. What could be more indicative of victory than a multinational paying slave wages? What part of the $100 price tag of Nike shoes goes to the people who actually make them?

I beg to differ ... had the US won the Vietnam War it is unlikely that the US installed Puppet Government of Vietnam would allow the workers to strike ... don't worry, they won.

I started to do the math (Tuesday is Math Day) and it didn't take long to know that the number is infinitesimally fractional.
