Controversial pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright is getting a luxurious retirement home. The Tinley Park Southtown Star reports that Barack Obama's former pastor will have a four-bedroom home in Tinley Park, Illinois, a southern Chicago suburb. Wright's home, which is being paid for by his church, the Trinity United Church of Christ, will include an elevator, butler's pantry, exercise room, a master bedroom with a whirlpool and a spare room for a future theater or swimming pool. The mansion is estimated to cost $1 million.

Read the original article from the Tinley Park Southtown Star, which adds that the pastor's home also has a large family rom with a fireplace and bar, a circular driveway, a four-car garage, and a customized shower, according to building plans.

Additionally, Fox News reports that:

According to documents obtained from the Cook County Register of Deeds, Wright purchased two empty lots in Tinley Park, Ill., from Chicago restaurant chain owner Kenny Lewis for $345,000 in 2004.

Documents show Wright sold the property to his church, Trinity United, in December 2006, with the proceeds going to a living trust shared with his wife, Ramah.

The sale price for the land was just under $308,000, about $40,000 less than Wright's original purchase two years earlier.

Public records of the sale show Trinity initially obtained a $10 million bank loan to purchase the property and build a new house on the land.

But further investigation with tax and real estate attorneys showed that the church had actually secured a $1.6 million mortgage for the home purchase, and attached a $10 million line of credit, for reasons unspecified in the paperwork.

Sounds like he was just paid off to keep quiet.

I wonder if that million dollars could not have been put to better use in the community he has served and whose views he has articulated over the years? He, not unlike so many other of these people of the cloth, have benefited financially off the backs of the poor for centuries. I am not singling out just one pastor but so many, including my own Catholic church, who live a lifestyle of sheer indulgence while preaching (or screaming from the top of their lungs) that in order to be saved just send money. There is a contradiction here in terms of how much is spent on luxuries by these shepards which I guess boils down to fleecing the flock in the end.

I can can count on the fingers of one hand the preachers that made any sense to me.

Wright is one of them.

Good for him! Its well deserved for being a servant of God and community. I'd expect he should get more after the Media witch hunt.

Last I looked, tons of white evangelists made tons of money getting over on their audiences...

Swaggart, Baker, Robertson, and on and on...the price of salvation is high.

Why does this matter? I'm was Catholic and the church pays for all the houses for the priests in my church. There is a huge house right next to the church were one lives in. There is not a thing wrong with this.

The priests take vows of poverty. That means no swimming pool, no indoor theatre, no exercise room, no butler's pantry, and no whirlpool in the master.

You have got to be kidding me. THE POPE LIVES IN A PALACE. Have you ever been in a cathedral? Gold, silk, gems, silver, fine fur- these are just a few of the luxuries that the archdiocese enjoys.

I'm thrilled, delighted, moved...so many have offered support to Rev. Wright on this blog. No doubt he's going through his own type of spiritual awakening right now as he processes the impact of those infamous videos that have been talked about/analyzed/criticized ad infinitem... Perhaps the uproar may have evem nudged him to shift his thinking a little. Certainly I've been through many of those times myself...when, after getting feedback realized...oops. Maybe I need to adjust my choice of words, adjust my perspective.
Regardless, however, after reading through the Trinity site, reading up on his background (stellar education)...and reading up on what this man accomplished in one of the most impoverished areas of the country...wow. The fact remains, in contrast with those thirty seconds of play on youtube, he has said wondrous things in other sermons, and has done wondrous things for many, many people (whites, Latinos and yes, even gays).
To all of those who are wishing him well via the comments you're leaving on this site: thank you.
Humanity seems to be evolving in a big way.
P.S. I'm not convinced the substance of what he had to say was all that off-the-wall.

Good for him! He deserves a very nice crib.
I am a Catholic but I am leaving soon to join the United Church of Christ.
Thank you Rev. Wright for opening my eyes.

And your point is....what? We really don't want to get into comparing the riches of the leaders of our super churches here in the good ole USofA, do we?

Ever been to Maryland (PG or Montgomery County). I have several friends who are living in 600K+ homes. One couple just moved into their 1mil dollar home this year, so the price of the Rev Wright's home is not that big of a deal to me.

I read comments defending The Rev. Wright and I can only conclude they are Obama supporters. It does matter what this man has said and may continue to say. Everything I thought of Obama is gone now in large part because of his association with this hateful man. If Hillary Clinton sat in Wright's church for twenty years and listened to his speeches of anti-white, anti American anti-gay and worst pf all his comments about 9/11/01 being America's fault, you better believe it matters. It goes to the heart of judgement and as a parent having your children listen to this will perpetuate hate and prejudice. I would no more vote for Obama then I would vote for McCain. Those who turn a blind eye on this man are justifying his hatred.

I have not decided who I will vote for, however, I think that the media did lynch Rev. Wright. Right is right and wrong is wrong. I do not believe you you can hold Obama responsible for anything that Rev. Wright said. I can see that you don't have all of the facts and that you have not listed to the entire sermon. I can see that you have formed your opinion as many people have and that is by just the sound bites. This is why you have to do your own research and not just let the media form your opinion. Doesn't that insult you that the media tries to form your opinion and they count on people just like you to repeat what they tell you. I think that you are the one with the blind eye.

Try actually watching more than a soundbyte of Dr Wright's sermons and you'll find it hard to disagree. The man can preach, and it's ALL about love.

I guess we are forgetting that Senator Obama is not one of a small group of Christians attending that Church. From what I've read, it's a Chuch with more than 8000 followers. At least there are no followers of that Church, responsible for providing false information about Saddam's WMDs to mislead us into the Iraq War, that is now creating problems for our economy, leaving more than 4000 of our young soldiers dead, amd thousands maimed.

Well, the same group who mislead us to the Iraq War must be eying for a war with Iran, too. And that same group, must desperately want Senator Obama out of the race. I understand that many of these people, who betrayed America abpur Saddam's WMDs, are working on Senator McCain's campaign. I understand from a Peace Group activist that those Warmongers are trying to create the same fear propaganda to make Senator Obama seems like an enemy... the same way they betrayed America by pushing Americans against Saddam to get us into the fake Iraq War.

Just wise up, and don't fall for their tricks again. America's real traitors are not Rev. Wright or his Church followers. America's real traitors are those who con up fear to take us to wrong and well-manipulated wars to make fools of us. Those who want America to be wise and stay out of dumb wars are not the traitors. .

What church does HRC attend? Do they go to church? Do you care? Did you listen to the entire sermon? Based on your comments I would assume that all of you friends/family share the same beliefs as you, correct? If your answer is yes then I understand your one-dimensional way of thinking.

to answer your questions about Hillary's church, she belongs to the United Methodist Church. She served as General Counsel for the National church for a very long time and has worked hard to serve her Church for decades on a national and parish level. She doesn't brag about it that is her personal commitment which she carries out quietly and beautifully - a committed Christian. She has never attended a Church which had anything close to the radical Christian Midrash of Trinity UCC.

The United Church of Christ local parishes are independent and call their own shots. So there is precious little the UCC can do about a Church like Trinity UCC.

Clearly, Rev. Wright built a large Church by tapping into the anger and frustration of those who gravitated to the Church because of the pull that such preaching has for the hurt, the angry, the discouraged and more. The parishioners are being psychically abused. Instead of working with them to deal with all the anger which has accumulated in their lives for whatever reason, they are abused and taken advantage of by a minister who found a shortcut built a Church by using a radical Midrash style instead of building a communion of people committed to Jesus Christ and to Christian morals and ethics.

Trinity UCC is not the only such Church, however, that does not justify the fact of how Trinity operates. And however, Copeland lives doesn't justify others following suit. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I think whatever this church does for him is strictly their business. If you're not contributing money or attending the church what difference does it make to you. Why is the media following him around anyway?

The referenced church property being loaned to Rev Wright is insignificant (four bedrooms?) compared to the vast, sprawling acreage and complex owned by Kenneth Copeland here in Texas. I saw a photo of his place taken from a small plane, and just couldn't believe it. Not a dime paid in taxes, yet this bozo lives like a prince on acres and acres of prime Texas property.

If Copeland does it then it should be okay for Obama's mentor as well.

Copeland and Wright and ALL of the fake moneymaking "preachers" aka SHYSTERS should be denied tax exempt status. Why should we pay for their insatiable greed?

Hey, if you have evidence why don't you report them to the FBI? "We" the taxpayers aren't really paying for "their insatiable greed", their parishioners are. Get a grip.

This sheds a new light on the lives and finances of pastors, reverends and church leaders. Did you know that most church leaders only get a nominal stipend for salary but all of their living expenses are paid for by the churches themselves through the donations of the church members. It's a sweet deal as they get to live very comfortable lifestyles while paying minimal taxes. It's not just Reverend Wright who is getting a sweet deal. Think of the mega mansions that are obtained by leaders of the mega churches. Those televangelists don't live in 1 bedroom apartments. That's for sure!

If Wright was the head of a corporation that grew from 87 members to some 6000, you can bet his golden parachute would be waaay more than $1 million.

If CEO's are given million dollar golden parachutes, then Obama's mentor should be allowed a little dip into the till for his retirement, too.

If Wright was a CEO he would NOT have nonexempt tax status!
You left that part out. YOU and I are paying for his million dollar pad..
a CEO has to pay taxes

Fine, then he should be PAYING TAXES like the CEO would have to. Churches have NONPROFIT status, get it, NONprofit?
CEOs of corporations are FOR profit endeavors. Sheesh, Obamabots will stretch it in any direction to try to cover for all the nasty dealings in Obama's inner circle of pals.

Sure the church owns it, for a tax dodge for both Wright and Trinity. YOU are paying for it. You are also paying for the HUGE credit line Wright has at his disposal. It is ILLEGAL to use the pulpit to spread political propaganda a la Wright. To have participated in and associated with Wright, Obama had a DUTY to report this activity. He is after all a US SENATOR who sat by and did nothing while this was going on. A whole church full of people CHEERING when these comments are made shows the church to be a hotbed breeding ground for racism and hate.
I didn't care one lick about his color and was a supporter of Baracks until I actually learned some facts about him. Now, no way. To end racism we ALL have to stand up and call people on perpatrating racism through sermons, jokes, whatever. You have to speak up and say " I am offended by your racist comment/joke/sermon" and take a stand. Preaching to children that white people hate blacks and are out to get them and even INVENTED AIDS to kill them (!!!) is racist beyond belief and only serves to fuel the racial divide.

Why in the hell are people looking into Rev. Wright"s retirement home? Most of you were never going to vote for Rev. Wright for President anyway¦oh, darn, I forgot he"s not running for anything!!! With all of this coverage on him, it"s so hard to remember that. Quit following him around and tracking his life like a bunch of stalkers!

For those of you who are hating on this man"s lifestyle, have any of you paid a dime into building his retirement home? Hell no!!! Rev. Wright"s parishioners believe that he"s earned it after 30 years of service! Where do your preachers live? Please tell us all. Rev. Wright headed and brought thousands of new members into his church community over the course of the last 30 years. What do CEOs of most companies get when they leave? A nice retirement package. Instead of you folks hating on a hard working, decent, God-loving and God-fearing man, perhaps you idiots should direct your anger towards CEOs who don"t deserve any sort of departing/retirement package, such as the CEO of Bear Stearns, who cashed in $61.3 million dollars worth of stock this past Tuesday, March 25, 2008, AFTER the federal government colluded with JP Morgan to waste my tax dollars bailing his company out! You people really have your priorities mixed up!!!

Bottom line: Get your own group of adoring and loyal worshipers and maybe you too can retire comfortably.

DDC-I agree with you. I'm shocked that these people keep harrassing this man. These haters keep following the man around, going to his church to report on what they see and following the members into the church with a microphone. It is appalling to me.

I was shocked when I heard on Fox News today a description of the house, how many rooms, etc. It is amazing we as americans would intrude into a persons personal life this way. There is no shame in it and most of the people ticked off about it are ticked because it is not them receiving all of this love.

This is pretty much about nothing.

Church builds its pastor a home, which the church owns and is keeping.

Check out pat roberston house or jerry hagwell or any of the other preachers.

This is what i call a forced story, that really has nothing to do with anything but to bring up thoughts in peoples mind.

Since it has nothing to do with policies or anything political
