Senate Democrats and Republicans have agreed on a plan to resurrect a dismal housing market. But, before a vote can even be taken, many are questioning if it will work and if the plan unfairly helps some of the big companies whom they blame for the housing mess.

One of the biggest provisions -- costing taxpayers an estimated $6 billion -- would allow builders and others in the housing business to count their losses this year and in 2009 against the big profits they made as far back as 2004.

Huffpo-please move this article to the politics section. This is not about business, this is about govt. hand outs or corporate socialism - this is a political story.

People! Stop buying houses (and anything else) you can't afford.

You can't afford a Macmansion on Wal-Mart wages, no matter what your freindly neighborhood real estate broker says.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:05 AM on 04/05/2008

The real estate broker doesn't underwrite the loan, give the money., the banks do. Notice, your local primary bank, that you can walk into and open an account isn't bankrupt. Sure they had to compete with the sub-prime internet mortgage companies and give 100% loans, but they had stricter guidelines. They also didn't charge 4.5 points on a 75,000 loan, they also made sure the person had stable employment, they also didn't lend more than the borrower could afford. No, this debacle is brought to you courtesy of GW, the republican controlled congress, and alan greenspan, who encouraged these risky loans, "Home ownership is at an all-time high", I guess they knew they would bail them out when it crashed. Can you say 30 Billion U.S. taxpayers dollars!

And the guy who took out a loan he can't pay back bears no responsibility for his own actions?

I wrote you a long one and huffpo didn;t print it. These weren't the house flippers, these were first time, high risk, homebuyers. They got lied to, thought they were getting FHA when it was a 228, were not told there was an early pay-off penalty, sent through soo many hoops on purpose, so if they figured it out at closing, they thought all processes where this way. Of course they were assured that that sub-prime co. would be there to refinance when the rate adjusted in two years. I'll say it again. I've met many people , that seem to have the same mindset you do - It's o.k. to take advantage of people, it's not my fault they are stupid. It is the lenders fault, why didn't they care if the loan could be paid back or not is the question.

A lot of people, first time homebuyers, trusted people who lied and tricked uninformed, uneducated people. Those people told them, don't worry about the interest rate adjusting in two years, we'll just refinance it. (make more money) What they didn't tell them is they have an early pay-off penalty. I realize people like you think it's o.k. to rob people, it's not your fault if they're stupid. But people like me don't belive in theft. And yes, cheesecake, it is the banks fault for lending them more than they could pay. It is their job to make sure the loan is good. But since they were going to turn around and sell it to say Bear Sterns, they didn't care. So now you and I get to pay.

I just e-mailed Pelosi, I'm e-mailing Reid next. If they do this, it is death to a democratically controlled congress and house in November. Forget getting a super majority, because to the typical american citizen, we will be no different than the republicans. This is some kind of set up, did a republican add this to the bill to aid the cities. Everyone now, goggle your senators and representives, call and e-mail them and tell them no way on the builders welfare. Corporate Welfare is a republican thing, not a democratic thing.

That is exactly what I was thinking! This sounds like something the Repubs would do -- give money to the big companies and screw the average person...

Here in AZ we have an "urban sprawl epidemic" that was/is caused by greedy home builders who just keep on building and building until the new house inventory is so bloated it becomes untenable. Then they offer severe discounts and incentives -- which drive down prices in the market overall.

NOW, the Democratic led Congress is going to reward their greed by giving them billions of dollars. GEEZ, seems like whomever is in control of Congress -- the consumer gets the shaft.

This is absolute insanity - let's pay more interest on more debt- how many did they overbuild that won't sell. Surely, when several hundred weren't selling they stopped building. If the dems vote for this, it could mean no majority in both houses, they will be seen as the republicans equal and will squash any chance at separating them from us.

This is precisely the kind of horseshit legislation one should expect from a GOP led Senate so why is it coming from one led by Democrats? Actually, the answer is fairly simple if you're as cynical about the two major parties as I am. I'm sure I'm not the only one reading this post who owns a home. Anyone care to venture a guess what a neighborhood full of rentals will do to home value? It certainly won't help maintain value and if history is any lesson, rentals substantial lower values. And wow, a $7,000. tax credit for those buying foreclosed homes...as if buying homes at fire sale prices wasn't enough incentive? Not only does this legislation help the wrong people and penalize homeowners in mortgage trouble but it screws people not currently in trouble. The fact that this legislation made it to the floor of the Senate serves testimony to who establishes policy in DC (hint: It isn't the politicians).

This story has made me sick at my stomach. I think the idea of helping the cities is good, but letting the construction industry go back and write their losses off back to re-coup 2004 taxes. If my husband loses his job, do we get to go back and re-coup money we have previously paid in, no. I swear, All his corproate socialism is making me sick of sticking up for the democrats.

Here's an idea. Take the $4 billion worth of grants for cities and towns to buy and maintain foreclosed properties and give it to those who are losing their homes. Add in the $100 million for financial counseling. The powers that be are blaming the wrong people here. Giving tax breaks to those who buy vacant homes is giving the wrong people a break. They aren't the ones in trouble. This would only enrich the rich. The lenders would be in jeapardy if morgage rates were frozen? They are the idiots who created this mess and we are going to feel sorry for them? Yikes, the world is on its head! The CEO of Countrywide cashed in for $57 million! WTF!!!! You know, sooner or later the American people are going to take to the streets. How about cutting some of the money we give to other countries, which invariably goes into the ruling elite's pockets for gold faucets in their mansions, and giving it to OUR OWN PEOPLE! It is so damn obvious that our leaders WANT the demise of this country. Traitors, treasous traitors whose day will come.

Didyou here that the former CEO of Countrywide, you know the moron who ran the company into the ground, was retained by Bof for $28 million...to run their new subsidiary--Countrywide. Does the term cluster fuck fit this?

The Democrats should just shelve this bill .... And let the chips fall where they may.

My wife warned me, "this country needs to hit bottom before anything will change." And she looks to be right. Every chance of ending this housing mess is being milked to benefit the 'perps' who started it and promoted it.

She's right, mmc.

Too many people are insulated from the real issues, and we can't expect Congress to regulate themselves any more than we can expect bidnezz to regulate themselves.

It's gonna have to crash and be rebuilt from the ground up.

Do you think it's too late to reclaim our government? Is there any way to recall each and every Congress person? Seems we'd be better off with NO ONE in Washington than the representatives that are there now. Regular citizens would be able to step in until we figure out how to proceed. The things that are happening right now are beyond scary--I feel like we're borderline Twilight Zone. The voters need to take action---it's time for these bought politicians to be dethroned.

Another disgrace for the U.S., this country is a joke. How about mentioning that in mid-February the NAHB announced that they would no longer make political contributions (in 2006 they were the 3rd highest contributing PAC) So i guess for a few million those elected officials gave them billions of our money.. Bribery anyone? DISGUSTING!!!!!!!

Really??? Are you telling me the millionaires club called the U.S. Senate has actually sided with business over labor or consumers?

Perplexing.

with all of the building that needs to be done (hospitals, schools, etc.) these crooks are building what doesn't need to be done. when politicians are crooked and lobbyists have their way, capitalism doesn't work.
