A key Pennsylvania surrogate to Sen. Hillary Clinton accused the media on Thursday of having a "double standard" in the way it has reported the issue of race in the 2008 Democratic primary.

Speaking at an event in Washington D.C., Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter said that the press had willfully ignored the historical significance of Clinton's attempt to be the first woman president, while still playing up Sen. Barack Obama's own ground-breaking run.

"Both of these candidate represent historic opportunities," Nutter told The Huffington Post. "I think somehow in all of this, apparently it has been lost that Sen. Clinton is a woman. And so a female president of the United States is historic, is monumental, and represents a dramatic step forward for progress here in the United States of America. In addition, of course, to Sen. Obama, who is an African American man."

But the problem with the 2008 press coverage, he added, was more systemic than simply denying Clinton her historical due. In addition, there was an unfair assumption that African-American officials, such as himself, should naturally be supporting Sen. Barack Obama at the expense of independent judgment.

"There is all this discussion about African American leaders and who they should support," Nutter said. "I do find that interesting that I don't seem to hear the same thing from the news media about white elected officials and why they are not supporting Sen. Clinton. There is a double standard here and I think we need to cut it out."

Nutter is one of many high-ranking public officials supporting Clinton in the Keystone State. But on the national stage, he has been somewhat distinguished as a prominent African-American leader in her camp. Nutter noted that Clinton had a portfolio of policy ideas that would benefit urban communities (more money for education grants, expanding health care coverage, etc.), and dismissed the notion that his surrogacy for the former first lady put him at uncomfortable odds with the city he represented.

"I got elected as the mayor of Philadelphia and yes I am black. But my responsibility is to all the citizens of the city," he said. "I went through a decision making process, I met with both candidates on a couple of occasions, I talked about the issues that I thought matter to Philadelphia."

The mayor expected a Clinton victory in Pennsylvania and rejected the idea that, in order to show her long-term viability, her win had to be of the double-digit variety: "When you win a Super Bowl it doesn't matter how many points you win by."

Reminded that, back in February 2007, he had predicted Obama would ultimately end up the nation's next president, Nutter backtracked, saying that forecast was meant to bolster what was then his own long-shot run for the mayor's office.

"It wasn't so much a prediction," he recalled. "We were at a high school sponsored candidates forum and we were asked who do you think will be the democratic nominee or who will be the next president. I said I thought Sen. Obama. Now, at that point, I was at fifth place. Since I was a long shot and it appeared to me that he was a long shot, I was trying to get some solidarity with the long shots."

Had his political crystal ball changed?

"Absolutely," Nutter replied, saying he thought Clinton would now win. "Obviously, I had no way of knowing that we would be where we are here today... [Back then] I was trying to give little hope to my own candidacy."

I would vote for a female in a moment, but not to just make history or because someone feels they are entitled.

The clear difference is intelligence, respect and a really outstanding campaign.

Mr Obama doesn't even appear to me to be half white and half black when he's speaking. He's depth and intelligence politely puts the Clinton harsh attitudes and lies clearly in their place.

I'm white and female. but mostly I'm a voter as far as this blog goes. Obama has presented himself better then any candidate since John F and Robert Kennedy. And I pray he's not killed because of it.

LOL to the concerned blogger worried about taxes on social security when Mr Reagan was in office. Bill Clinton places a 17% tax on social security!!! SEVENTEEN PERCENT!!!
High fives to the women here that are going to vote for their choice and not let race and sex cloud their judgements!!

What do you mean it's not ambition? It's not ambition ALONE! It's power blood thrust. Both candidates agreed up front on the Michigan and Flordia primaries being out of line, by making their own rules. In 1/08, Mrs Clinton said, "those two states didn't matter". Mr Obama removed his name from ballot in respect for the party, and both agreed up front, that neither candidate campaign in Flordia. What American don't know the Clinton name? Who would in good conscience vote for someone they'd hardly seen? So one state not on the ballot and the other state wasn't a household name like the Clinton's name. Did we have a choice with the impeachment of a sitting president. To the parents out there, do you correct your child and give them time out for breaking the rules? Or do u give time out, then come back and tell them, oh dummy me how could I even think of punishing you for breaking the rules. I guess we can let the votes go to the poor Clintons' and in future elections we can just have primaries whenever we want and maybe even have more than one in our states. After all if we throw a temper tantrum the DNC will back off and let us have our way. I feel Mrs Clinton is going into a second childhood. The former president hasn't come out of the first childhood. ie How mature do you have to be to just tell the truth?

I think that I can sum this up in one sentence:

Obama backed my opponent in the mayoral race.

Nutter indeed.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:41 PM on 04/05/2008

That is the POINT, he did not back Nutter and so Nutter will not support Obama. The issue of African Americans backing Obama over clinton became subject when the clintons started their race bating campaign in SC and then saying it was Obama when they were called on it. As we KNOW now the e-mail of being a Muslim, not saluting the flag and not wearing lapel flag pin CAME FROM clinton campaign in Iowa.

All sums up to Nutter suffering in Philly from staying with clinton and not confronting the issue of their campaign using race to SCARE up white votes. One term Mayor should he continue to help the clintons continue to use fear that a Black Candidate will HARM whites, take their jobs, money, land, and country and give it to the blacks. That is what will make him a less than effective mayor in Philly dealing with racial, crime, TAXES, and employment issues. He will inherit the clinton TRUST factor and it WILL wear it through his term.

Mike, just wait till the PA campaign is over and she does not do so well and YOU don't deliver the black vote in Philly. She will treat you like she did all the voters ans states she did not win, YOU WONT MATTER and will become useless and forgotten. Then you will know what it's like to be a STRONG supporter of the clintons that have been USED and BETRAYED.

I think his point would be interesting if it were true. Here's the problem:

1. Black people supported Hillary IN GREATER NUMBERS than they supported Obama at the beginning of the year. She lost those votes due to the race baiting of her campaign which made Black people feel used and betrayed.

2. Women HAVE BEEN attacked for not supporting Clinton, especially women who are feminists (like me). So this goes both ways.

3. I think the value of Clinton being the first viable female candidate is compromised because 1. White women have done better politically in the U.S. than Black men (more senators, more congresspeople, more governorships etc. and 2. She's a former first lady; she didn't rise on her own the way Obama did; she climbed on the shoulders of her president husband. Not as inspiring as a woman who does this without a man.

Disagree. I heard a report that Obama received a significant number of votes from many blacks who had never voted before. It looks like it took a black candidate to get them to vote. I won't comment on what that means, anybody else want to interpret that stat?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:04 PM on 04/05/2008

"I heard a report" says it all. The fact is, despite the "report" you "heard" (who was the source?), that most Black voters were skeptical of Obama when he first ran, many expressing the opinion that he was "not Black enough". After Bill began the race-baiting, Black voters (and many shocked and disgusted White voters, like myself) began turning their backs on Hillary.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:22 PM on 04/06/2008

Your not from this country or you would know that if it took a black candidate to get these blacks to vote (assuming your not talking about young just able to vote) would have done so when Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton ran for president.

Also, first time black voters voting for Obama are not voting for him just because he is black but also because he has shown he is QUALIFIED to be POTUS and EARNED their PROUD vote.

I am a white woman over forty and I have gotten tons of "bad feminist" crap from Clinton supporters. I had one woman tell me that if I didn't vote for Clinton I was self-hating. My friend has an excellent response when people guilt her about not supporting a woman candidate, she simply says, "Condaleeza Rice." We debate gender and race politics as if policy and record has nothing to do with the choice of who to support. Hillary Clinton was never going to be my candidate because she continually makes poor choices and can't admit she is wrong. Sen. Clinton and I disagree about issues that I feel very strongly about, and her relationship with the truth has been shaky for many years. Her misinformed vote on the war is hugely important to me and I don't see any evidence or explanation that convinces me that she would not make a similar error in the future. She voted very recently to declare the Iranian Guard a "terrorist organization," which opens the preemption door for Bush and Cheney again. Her judgment is awful and her tactics have destroyed her chances in the general, but I should vote for her 'cause I'm a woman too? There is plenty of pressure on the other "side."

Clinton backer, double standard! I'm shocked man absolutely shocked.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:02 PM on 04/05/2008

There sure is a double standard. I can't believe Barack Obama got off scott-free with the "typical white woman" comment. Can you imagine anyone saying "typical black man" and living to campaign another day? Then, there's the Rezko pass, the Wright pass, the Black Value System pass, the throw grandma under the bus pass, the "present" pass, the Exelon pass, and on and on. Michelle Obama is at least more honest about their beliefs, and notice how she has been unplugged lately. Can't let the truth get out, that would be too damning. At what point does the press dig deep into what this man has been doing as a politician all these years? You really believe that he was going to leave Trinity if Wright hadn't "retired" to his million dollar mansion? After 20 years of membership, the conflict of interest finally dawned on him? Democrats really need to worry how much dirt is going to be unearthed by the Rezko trial between now and November. As we learn more about Tony Rezko, it becomes painfully obvious that Barack Obama has demonstrated atrocious judgment and behavior that would reflect poorly on the Office of the President of the United States of America. Do we really want to bring Chicago corruption to the White House? The Clintons have been given annual proctology exams by the press. For Obama, the press has been satisfied with height and weight measurements phoned in by the school nurse.

Media is bais, if you watch MSNBC all the time they singing the song of Obama, I advise MSNBC to change the name from MSNBC to OBNBC, they are treating Hillary as if she is a conservative candidate, we are fed up with this one sided news. People like me have switched to Fox News at least this time they are more balance. If Obama is the nominee my whole family will be voting for John McCain. More over all losers( John Kerry, Kennedy, Dodd, Bill Richardson), are with Obama.

Stop the crap you and your family would never ever voted for Obama so why to bother here with your statment.
Anyway you really all want these scnadals returned back to WH once again?

In preparation for her unchallenged role as America"s Scandal Queen, Hillary navigated the shoals of Arkansas politics for 12 years as the then-governor's wife " years that included scandals of her own, among them:

–ª A $100,000 windfall from cattle futures after a $1,000 investment.

¢ The Castle Grande real estate scam.

¢ Her role as attorney for the Rose law firm in what would become the endlessly controversial-cum-criminal Whitewater affair that would follow her to the White House.

¢ The serial philandering of her husband, which cast her " depending on one's viewpoint " as a clench-jawed stoic, a perpetual victim, or a willing collaborator.

According to veteran journalist Richard Poe: "During Bill Clinton's tenure as attorney general and then governor of Arkansas, the state became a veritable Dixie Casablanca, a hotbed of global intrigue, in which shady operators ranging from Columbian drug lords and BCCI money launderers to Chinese intelligence agents took part." And there, in the thick of it, was Clinton's "stand by your man's" wife, Hillary.

You understand that Clintons strategy to win the Presidency would be to do it by splitting the vote 50/50 and just winning in the electoral college. The Democrats will suffer a bloodbath in marginal districts and states for Congress. So she will not have the support available to push any liberal legislation through. Then we will see the new Clinton Triangulation, Health Care that is good for insurers, an economy that is good for big buisness, and politcs that are good for the Clintons and Republicans.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:30 PM on 04/05/2008

You will get all of that from a President Obama too. He is the candidate of the establishment, he will need bipartisanship in order to rescue the economy on the backs of the middle class. Still the Democrats will be blamed, he still is Republican light. He has said he will listen to the insurance industry. Remember when the Democrats under Clinton started out, they did the dirty work and Clinton cleaned house and when he left office Bush played Santa, handing out the goodies some one else had baked. Reagan and the Democrats increased payroll taxes for SS and now Bush is burning the money in Iraq and tells us SS is in trouble lets privatize. And now Obamas people say, there will be troupes for some time in Iraq.

Nothing has changed.

I'm tired of politicians accusing the press of unfair treatment. If a politician can't stand the heat, they should drop out.

Does anyone remember the person who said, "If a politician doesn't wanna get beat up, he shouldn't run for office....Let's just saddle up and have an argument. What's the matter with that?"

Oh yes, I remember. It was Bill Clinton.

Shouldn't their campaign should take their own advice?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:05 PM on 04/05/2008

I agree Pan. I am pretty critical of the media, and I think they do overall a fairly shoddy job. One of the reasons I think they suck is that they try to be overly fair, and so you get issues where they don't go after a candidate b/c it's not that candidate's turn to be got.

All the parties that argue that the media is against them is simply trying to play on that fear among the media. The Republicans have done it for years with great success, which is why Bush doesn't get crucified by the media during this horrible 2 terms while Bill did during 8 years of a pretty good time for America.

Even so, whining about the media is like those players who are always crying to the refs. I hate those guys. And also, pundits are not media. While I agree that the line between journalists and pundits is being blurred, I also understand the difference between the front page and the op-ed page.

I can only assume you don't watch Olbermann,Matthewsor Jack Cafferty. You can ask a question about the moon and they'll find a way to mention Hillary.

This is all so distorted - it presumes that the MSM is in lockstep. I'd agree that MSNBC is hugely favourable to Obama. CNN tensd to favour Clinton - I'm not sure why - I they're bending over backwards to appear that they don't favour Obama so they actually end up favouring Clinton - with the exception of Cafferty. But you couldn't possibly think Blitzer wasn't fawning all over her. CBS tends to Clinton - specially Couric. Fox leaning heavily to Clinton because they think she'll be easier to beat than Obama. The one good thing abut it is that if you're an avid fan of one or the other, you can choose which channel to lap up and which to avoid.

We've seen it all before. The media hated Gore and loved Bush. That worked out well for America. Now they love Obama and hate Hillary. The problem with this picture is that likability is the the NOT same as leadership. And likability is no substitute for experience and good judgement. Obama has proven likable but is totally deficient on experience and judgement.

His campaign has been hate driven against Hillary and this bonehead strategy shows very poor judgement for someone who claims to want to heal the wounds of national political rancor. Also, it has been very toxic for the Democratic party. As shown by a recent poll that said 26% of Hillary supporters (way up from single digits) will be voting for McCain if she is not the nominee.

Olbermann claiming that Hillary recounted the first lunar landing, and how she stuck the flag into its soil, then drove a golf ball for a mile and saw a cow jump over the moon. Olbermann loves his Hillary hyperbole. He really does fancy himself clever. Too bad he doesn't use what skill he has for good and not evil.

Thanks for your response. I'm not clear exactly what you mean, but I think you're suggesting that the media folk you mention worship at the Obama altar and will find any excuse to dis Hillary. Certainly, many agree.

However, the point of my comment is that the Clinton campaign should not tell other politicians to toughen up and then whine and sniffle over unfair media treatment.

FACT: Other than dodging sniper fire in Bosnia...Mr. Nutter also failed to mention that Senator Clinton is a "sleep deprived" and "misunderstood" triangulating serial liar.

QUESTION: Shouldn"t any governance be built NOT on ethnicity or gender, but...on truth, credibility and judgment...!?!?

Is that a race question? who is asking him why he does not support Obama? He came out early enough for Clinton so maybe he got the question at first not because he is black but because he announced early. When the press ask the voters why they voted for Hilary in Ohio, 8 out 10 said they voted because of race, that is why these morons in Ohio deserved to go broke and loose everything. How stupid they must feel now after it turns out that Hilary lied about NAFTA, Bosnia and all the other nonsense she's pulled. Anyone who make decisions like this and any decision base on skin color, deserves all the stupid things that happens to them. I personally think that the Country needs a woman president and supported her, now i know SHE IS NOT THAT WOMAN, so MR. Nutter's agreement is self serving. I am not comfortabel with anyone who is willing to do or say anything to get what they want or flipflops the way Hilary does and I hope these poor folks in PA do not follow the same fate of the morons in Ohio and by the way, I am one of the morons

Its exactly the same way all older women are assumed to be supporting Hilary. That has resulted in a lot of agist , sexist rematks from the Obama camp... who somehow assume by making such remarks they will prove they are young and hip, certainly it can't be because they want to win converts.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:00 AM on 04/05/2008

She's not young nor hip and will not win converts but repeat what she brought Democrats in 1994. From 1992 to 1994, in two years, she and Bill pissed off an entire country bringing the Republican sweep of congress and setting the table for the current wack job in the Whitehouse. She and Bill are the Jim and Tammy Faye (RIP) of our party. But yeah I'm sure she'll convert someone.

Right! This just like the Clinton camp using Rev. Wright to scare super delegates into changing sides. It is just like the Clinton camp claiming all of Senator Obama's supporters are either college students or the yuppie elitists.

Nothing like having your spiritual mentor saying "God Damn America" and the "U S of KKK" to sour one on candidate Obama. The only defense seems to be to claim the accuser of being racist if they take affront to the sentiments of the spiritual advisor or taking the comments out of context. What context makes such sentiments okay?
