This is rather interesting. The common wisdom is (or at least was a week or two ago) that Barack Obama may have taken a serious long-term hit as a result of the controversy surrounding comments made in the past by his former preacher, Jeremiah Wright. On the basis of such a theory, one might have assumed that fewer Americans would indicate that they believe Obama shares their values. However a new poll from CBS News and The New York Times indicates that the opposite is the case. Here's Ben Smith:

This, from a CBS/NYT poll of 1368 registered voters (.pdf) out this evening, cuts across quite a bit of conventional wisdom, and seems to suggest that attacks which really centered on Obama's values and patriotism haven't, yet, cut.

There is a patriotism problem. Patriotism is being used by scoundrels, thieves and murderers to promote their self interests.

ajax2, you are so right. My dad spent 22 yrs in the military and he never wore a flag on anything. He loved our country. He didn't approve of anyone burning the flag but he said he fought for the right of any american to do so. He believed in freedom of the press. He always said that the press is our looking out for the american people. He would turn over in his grave that this administrations shame they brought us all.

You underestimate the Wright factor, especially in November. I was a Barack supporter from Illinois, but simply can't vote someone who listened to hate sermons for 20 years. I'll now vote Independent before BO. Sorry

i think that is a skewed poll. I am a Hillary supporter and a Democrat. I believe Hillary is better Presidential Candidate. I spoke to my aunt who lives in Texas yesterday, she is a registered Democrat, Catholic, Single mother of two grown boys. When we started talking politics, she was not bothered by what Rev. Wrights said about "white america" she and her colleagues were most disturbed by what Rev. Wright said about America, and September 11th. She was not a fan of Hillary's, she was hoping to cast her ballot for John Edwards. She ended up voting for Hillary- but through the media bias that continues, the constant bashing that Hillary has received- she has really come around to Hillary and is now a very big supporter. So this polling info- strikes me as strange- Senator Obama and his campaign have been very good at spinning the media- just take a look at the HuffPost- compare headlines. Who has the most friendly/favorable- who has the most unfriendly/unfavorable.

That is a "skewed" poll - why - because you don't like it? Because in your world you know two people who support Hillary and had a problem with Wright.

Could it be that the reason Hillary has more unfavorable headlines is that she is engaging in more unfavorable behavior? That there is truly more unfavorable news about her?

I cannot wait for PA to be over and Hillary and all these inane comments from her supporters to just go away. There is never any rational argument - just declarations.

You would need us to win in November.

Do you really want us to go away without persuading us why we should vote for Obama in November?

I have attended Trinity a few times. I've read Dr Cone as well as Rev Wright's works.

I see Obama as Rev Wright's son who will use the White House's bully pulpit to preach similar sermons to the American people. The way Obama runs his campaign with a hateful attitude toward Hillary and Bill tells me what I need to know. Twenty years of being preached to about the evils of white people has determined Obama's attitudes.

I think the American people will learn to dislike Obama the more we hear from him

What is this "hateful attitude toward Hillary and Bill"? Obama barely ever mentions either one of them. Specifics please.

"I think the American people will learn to dislike Obama the more we hear from him"

That flies in the face of the reality that whenever he campaigns in a state, his poll numbers go up. Apparently, the more people see and hear Senator Obama, the more they like him.

If Hillary had attended a church for 20 years with a Reverand preaching white supremacy and anti government rhetoric from the pulpit - and adopted that pastor as her mentor - do you really imagine anyone would consider her Presidential material?

ok here is why hillary gets a bad end of the stick. first for the people that love hillary or mccain and are trying to find a reasons to not like obama. so they use the rev wright flap. however that fact is obama did not say those thing rev wright said. however if obama said those things it would be a problem because a person that wants to lead a country should not have to view in their heart. However a pastor said it in church! remember its Americans right have their opinion about anything. also most people that attends church feels that church is a private place that the members and guess join together and cerebrate, party, cry, and share pain together. so once those tapes started showing all over many people of faith felt that a pastor has the right to preach to it members.

I'm republican (disclaimer). At first I was wondering how that could possibly be. But after thinking about it I realized that's how I would rank them too. With respect to Wright, I don't think he buys into Wright's conspiracies. I think Wright has a very over simplified view of racism and why it exists...I think Obama has a much more mature understanding of both sides. Just think he would have been smart to keep Wright as a friend and not as a pastor/spiratual advisor, IMO.

So why not support him? Honestly, it comes down to judge appointments (I'm not in favor of a liberal interpretaion of the consitution) and taxes. Obama thinks I'm borderline rich...I'm SO not rich. I worry about retirement, health care (quality and cost), putting my kids through school, and the same everyday stuff that everyone else does.

I'm not surprised by this and I find it quite promising. Americans of late have been tarred with the brush of greed and cynicism, with the notion of being unconcerned with the poor and disadvantaged, ready to bomb anyone anytime into desolation and dispair. I don't think Americans really want to see themselves like that. I think Obama's openness, calm manner, and offering of hope paint a better portrait of us as human beings that are charitable and decent. I'm not surprised to see us responding to his campaign and rejecting the divisiveness and anger, bullying and fighting. I'm weary of always being in battle with other Americans, other races, other religions, other nations. I'd like to have a little comfort of tranquility and true leadership.

Let's see who has better values:

McCain: cheated on his 1st wife to marry a rich chic. Golddigger extraoardinaire.

Clinton: Travelgate, Whitewater, Cattle Futures, Wal-Mart board member, 12 years as a corporate attorney, tried to get Thomas Taylor acquitted for child rape, etc.

Obama: could have gotten a huge attorney job after Harvard; instead, got a $12k/year job as a Civil rights Attorney.

Yeah, who has better values???

The NYT/CBS poll did not provide the internals (no surprise there) but Obama won easily in all categories across the board. I would encourage readers to click through and look at all questions and responses. The pattern is clear and heavily pro-Obama.

While this article is no doubt designed to rally and reassure the Obamians, the real surprise of the poll is that McCain did as well as he did.

It usually helps to actually read the article. Let me summarize for you:

"CBS/NYT poll of 1368 registered voters" "The biggest gap between Obama and Clinton on this comes from Republicans. Most Republicans, 52%, think Obama shares America's values but far fewer, only 27%, think Clinton does. Independents and Democrats think they both do, but Obama fares better here, too, by 13 points. Republicans and Independents both think McCain shares America's values, and half of Democrats do."

Looks like Clinton is the one with the "patriotism problem". Oops.

Obama is a strong believer in our constitution - and that is the number one job. The LIAR Hillary, however, could care less:

"Zeifman fired Hillary from the committee staff and refused to give her a letter of recommendation " one of only three people who earned that dubious distinction in Zeifman"s 17-year career.

Why?

'Because she was a liar,' Zeifman said in an interview last week. 'She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality.'"

Obama is not a liar only because he could not hear what Wright said and because for the first time of his wife's life, she is so proud of her country!!!

Obama is not a liar, yes but we are all liar.

Any way, only a stupid people ever change their mind

"I think it's still well to early to assume that the story is completely behind him, that he handled it well enough last month that he will not be forced to handle it again in the future. Nevertheless, Obama did show an ability to take a punch -- and a hard one, at that -- yet stay on his feet and endure in his purpose. And if that's not the kind of quality one would like to see in the Democratic nominee, I'm not sure what would be. "

HIllary wins hands down when it comes to taking punches. Every day since this race started, the media has been bashing her. Obama hasn't even been "touched" compared to all the grief
Hillary's gotten.
