Earlier this week, it was announced that Oprah would dedicate today's show to her late cocker spaniel Sophie, who died last month of kidney failure at the age of 13. Oprah's show today centered on puppy mills, but it opened with a tribute to Sophie.

Oprah, who watched the montage her staff put together for the first time on air, was brought to tears and needed to cut to commercial so she could collect herself.

Watch:

Oprah's dog died last month, and today's show was dedicated to the 13-year old cocker spaniel, Sophie. Watch Oprah cry after seeing the montage her staff put together.

Well, if I made as much money as Oprah does, I would be happy to.

Shame on all of you! Ms Winfrey's towering grief will be attended to! It is epic! It is important! And all those who speak ill of the dramatics and self-centeredness will be destroyed!

Has Oprah ever broken down and cried over dead Iraqi women or children?
Nothing on Google that I could find says she has. Typical American.

Oh so you admit to even Googling to find useless garbage to push your racist ignorant hate of 300 million people? Go back to the vineyard, troll. Better yet, don't you have some suicide bombers to mourn?

She may not have broken down in tears over them, but that day after Colin Powell's Feb 5 2003 UN speech she did a major 2 day anti-war show where she showed people all over the world warning against a war; it was so controversial it was taken off the air in some markets:

Please Please NO more Oprah articles.
She is a publicity seeking celebrity.
OMG I just can't stand her.

Oprah, Let's shed our tears about the military and civilian deaths in Iraq.
Then, we could shed some tears for the thousands of the critically wounded, whose lives have been shattered. Then tell us what Obama is going to do about any of this.

I like that you rant on Oprah and then you entered Obama's name..

The always present racists trying to find nace ways to disguise their filthy thoughts..

Go to Iraq you creep and hang out 10 feet from the green zone!

Huffpo: I am about sick of Oprah's dead dog. I'm over it, you get over it, and she can get over it. Take down her photo. I'm tired of looking at it.

Her dogs are her children. Don't be mean!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:15 AM on 04/06/2008

Make sure your children don't kill you. Read the news and see how many do. Children mistreating parents and parents mistreating children. Why is it that when people who adore their dogs other people jump to criticize them, bringing "children" into the picture? Do I like children? I eat anything.

Of all the tragedies she has reported or explored on her show, the only thing she cries over is her dog's death.

Oprah cries over many sadnesses and indignities. As for the tears over her dog, if you've ever had a dog, you will understand. They become a part of the family, canine children, best friends. Differerence is they never cease to need you, and they never cease to love you. Losing a dog is hard. I respect her ability to be human in front of millions of people. Thanks, Oprah, for all you do; our hearts are with you!

Actually ányone who's ever watched Oprah knows that she cries about almost everything. She's the most emotionally sensetive person I've ever seen.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:10 AM on 04/06/2008

You are right. Any sad show she has done.. She always utters: "I don't want to cry" because her tears are usually non stop..

It is not fair to make these claims. I think the real anger towards Oprah is that she is rich, but she has done so much for this country and people's lives.

Honestly I thank Oprah every day. And Martha Stewart too.. :-)

Women love pets because they can control them. Put some effort into a relationship with a person. You've got to let go of control but it's worth it. Then we'll honor the tears. But this stuff with the pets, this is just practice, and it gets no honor.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:04 AM on 04/06/2008

Oh, and why do men love pets?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:09 AM on 04/06/2008

Because they're companions. because they're useful. When they die men honor them, bury them and move on. We don't cry about it on national TV. But if we're courageous we focus our relationship energy on people. Anyway, it was nice of you to actually notice the point of my post - womens' control issues.

Do you REALLY know what LOVE is? Are you really capable of loving anyone? A loving being is capable of loving more than just one. In the USA more than 60% of the people have no more than 1 friend. Same goes for the world. Human beings are incaple of love jus very capabl of destruction. That is our legacy: Destruction.

How many tears has she shed for our brave men and women in IRAQ on air?? When do THEY get a tribute show?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:45 AM on 04/06/2008

It's not Oprah's responsibility to air a tribute to the troops. It's ours, as citizens, to volunteer, to vote, to pray...

It is sad to see so much negativity on the blogs these days. Granted, we live in a challenging time, where cynicism is thriving, but can't we also be touched and cry for another's loss? Have we lost our ability to relate to each other, even on the most basic level? We comfort friends and family during loss, but why can't we respect loss when it also affects people that we do not know personally.
I applaud anyone who has the courage to expose abuse/inhumane treatment, (whether it be animal or human). We all have a responsibilty to be "mindful" when relating to others. Thanks to Oprah, millions of us have been affected by one little orange book, "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle.
Just by reading some of these posts, I am convinced that most people are still kind and good-natured.

Oh she cathects dogs. She is so pathetic. I can't bear to watch her. She sheds more tears for a dog than she does for human suffering. She has barely spoken out about this illegal and horrific war in Iraq. There is something wrong with that woman, she is truly damaged.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:57 PM on 04/05/2008

So you berate her even knowing she is damaged?

Ok, Oprah shows she has a way to grab a story and publicity... It's a dog, get over it. That school business was even worse... She should be begging for more regulation for schools and all the children who have been killed in schools here in this country... What about those parents and their heart break and the random killings in this country..

ok Oprah, let's get real about this country and jobs and murder and mayhem....

I love my pets so I can relate, I hate see animals abused, and I don't know why it upsets people that other people care about their animals. You can care about many things, what's the big deal.

Next thing she'll be mourning a broken heel on her Manolo Blahniks.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:44 AM on 04/06/2008

It upsets people because there are far more troubling things happening in our world and instead of choosing to showcase those issues, she showcased her mourning her dog. If you want to dedicate a part of the show to it fine, but an entire show? She can grieve privately. She is starting to remind me of Imelda Marcos.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:42 AM on 04/06/2008

Actually the show was about the way dogs are treated. If you don't think the daily torture of hundreds of thousands of dogs everyday is worth doing a show over, then you are one sick puppy.

When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune dries his master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege that that of accompanying him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when that last scene comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there, by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful, and true, even in death."
Senator Vest, speaking to a jury about Old Drum, shot in 1869.

"The best friend man has in the world may turn against him and become his worst enemy. His son, or his daughter, that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and good name may become traitors to their faith. The money a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our head.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground when the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only to be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince.

The death of a pet is very awkward. On the one hand, we know intellectually that it was not a human and that the loss is not on a par with the all too common human suffering that exists in the world. On the other hand--and ironically--our relationships with animals humanize us. It is common knowledge that there is no better predictor of violence and inhumanity, than violence a person expresses toward animals. One thing animals have in common with humans is that each one is unique. The loss of a pet with which you have spent a lot of time is tremendously sad. Yet, expressing that sadness is not societally kosher. Either the sadness is not appreciated, or, worse, it is mocked. Much as it is here.

Such mocking is mere bullying. The purported concern for humanity that accompanies this mockery is false. And the mockery says far more about its source than about the one taking time to weep. There is no reason that sadness over a pet in any way makes one less sensitive or responsive to human suffering. If anything the bulliers could better spend their time in some humanitarian effort. As I understand it Oprah has made substantial efforts in this regard herself.
