NEW YORK — The leader of the largest branch of American Judaism said Wednesday that synagogues in the movement shouldn't work with the Rev. John Hagee, a Christian Zionist, calling him an "extremist" on Israeli policy who disparages other faiths.

Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the liberal Union for Reform Judaism, said Hagee and his group, Christians United For Israel, reject any Israeli land concessions to achieve peace with the Palestinians.

Reform Judaism supports creating a Palestinian state; Hagee sees a biblical mandate for the territory so End Times prophecy can be fulfilled.

Yoffie also condemned Hagee's views on Roman Catholicism and Islam. The San Antonio pastor has suggested that Catholic anti-Semitism shaped Adolf Hitler, among other comments.

Hagee has vehemently denied he is anti-Catholic and said his remarks have been mischaracterized.

But Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, distanced himself from Hagee last month, after the pastor endorsed him, following an uproar over Hagee's views of Catholicism.

"On Israeli-Palestinian politics, John Hagee and the CUFI are extremists," Yoffie said, in a speech to Reform rabbis meeting in Cincinnati. "In expressing contempt for other religions and rejecting territorial compromise under any and all circumstances, their views run against the American grain."

The Union for Reform Judaism represents more than 900 North American synagogues.

Religion should have no place in presidential politics. I'm an ardent Obama supporter, but should his candidacy implode in the general election because of the Rev. Wright scandal, I'll be satisfied -- not that Obama lost, but that the most capable candidate the Dems have given us in years was foolish enough to believe in a vengeful sky-god from second-century Palestine. In this sole regard, he's no better, and certainly no wiser, than his loony Republican counterparts.

Rabbi Yoffie was overly kind in calling Mr. Pigee an extremist.

I disagree with Rabbi Yoffie, I think John Hagee is one of the best bible teachers on tv with the exception of maybe Charles Stanley, they are both close as far as their teachings.

let's just see if the people and the media pick this up and run with it like they did the rev wright mess. i doubt it, we all know that there is a double standard in the U.S. Obama was damn near crucified with the wright stuff, and McCain, and Bush have gotten a free ride on the same stuff forever. It's due partly to who controls the media.

John Hagee was a complete, batshit crazy lunatic long before he was an extremist.

McCain is also linked to Pat Buchanan, Hal Turner and Sean Hannity.

Note why MSM will not touch Hagee.

A former moving company manager and real estate agent, Turner cut his teeth as the Northern New Jersey coordinator for Pat Buchanan's quixotic 1992 presidential campaign. He was an aggressive self-promoter who found a platform for his views on the radio show of Bob Grant, which was broadcast by ABC's flagship station, New York City's WABC. Grant was a pioneer of right-wing radio and, incidentally, a hysterical racist. In March 1995, according to the media watchdog FAIR, Grant entertained the call of a promoter for the neo-Nazi group National Alliance who billed his mission as the "support of European males." "I don't have a problem with the National Alliance!" Grant twice declared. Less than one month later, the Oklahoma City Federal Building was blown up by a white supremacist who said he was influenced by the plot of National Alliance founder William Pierce's pulp novel, The Turner Diaries. Grant insisted on his show for days afterward that Arabs were responsible for the bombing.

John Hagee cares about John Hagee. His mission is to "sound theological and educated" but anyone with a decent high school education and a cursory understanding the basics of theology knows he is a revisionist with one goal in mind: To anoint his faith and damn all others.

Of course he wants to be 'anointed' with cash and plenty of it. As with any televangelist, every other sermon is about "buying your salvation" to keep the creepy preacher happy with baubles, limos and whores.

Obama's got Rev Wright. McCain has Rev Hagee. We should put them in a boxing ring and let them duke it out. Whichever one wins gets to pick the Pres. Unless we're fortunate enough that they knock each other out and we don't have to hear about either one of them again EVER.

When people ask me why I am so stongly support the seperation of Church and State I tell them it is because of the slippery slope that leads to religious fanatics in positions of power. If you do not draw the line seperating Church and State where do you draw the line? Do you allow a fanatic like Hagee or one of his followers in your cabinet? Perhaps as Secratary of State? The though is just too scary to contemplate.

It has already happened. The litmus test to be president is that you must be a CHRISTIAN! It's not good enough to be religious i.e. Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, but no - the person must be CHRISTIAN!

And the point is that no one cares enough to run his sermons on Youtube and cable all day long while calling him the racist that he is, and demanding that McCain renounce him; typical.

I am an agnostic and I really don't care what the men of GAWD do to raise money. If they want to blame the white devils for the problems of Jesus and Barack so be it. I'm not sure about the purpose of GOD being poor is. Can't GOD turn a big rock into gold and have a fortune?

If the people that follow these crackpots want to give their money then so be it. If the men of God support a candidate, let them. The candidate can't control who endorses them. I think Wright and Hagee are both nuts and I'm not going to determine who I will vote for by what they say (if I vote for any of the three sorry candidates. I'm going to go by what the candidate says.

I know that Barack goes to Wright's church but who goes to Hagee's church?

The funniest thing about Wright is, he blames rich white devils for the problems of the world (good for fund raising) but the church builds a $1.6M dollar house in a gated community in a zip code where over 90% of the people are white devils and less than 2% are black. I wonder why he picked this area to build his retirement house (in the middle of white devil territory)?

This guy Hagee is very succesful con-man who has built a huge fortune bilking poor lonely people out of the last pennies in order to live the life-style of a prince. If he believes in heaven and hell..... Well all I can say to Haggee is, enjoy what you have now because when it's all over it aint going to pretty.

Dear God, please rapture Hagee NOW! Suck him up quickly. Take his clothes with him, and his wife and kids. Take relatives and friends too. Take the entire church he preaches at.

Dear God, while you're at it, I ask that you rapture Bush and Cheney as well. Take all their friends and associates on up into heaven. I pray you will do this really soon. Just get them off the planet.

In Jesus' name,
Amen!!!

His church has over 10,000 members. I'm not one but I do live in San Antonio. I know you're trying to be funny and maybe you meant the church building (along with the school and the daycare in it) is supposed to be destroyed and not the people who are members. However it seems a little ironic that you're so mad at Hagee for his religious hatred that you want to destroy him and all his followers-religiously.

I'm just saying that this would seem to feed the fires of misunderstanding.

About time someone's called him out. I've heard Hagee speak on TV and that is one angry man. I thought preachers were suppose to teach love and tolerance. Hagee is all about hate and division.I don't know what bible he's reading from, but the bible that I read tells me I should love my neighbor, hate what is bad,and ti give to ceaser what's ceaser's and to give to God what's God's( In other words religion and politics shouldn't mix.)..... Preachers should stick to preaching and leave the politics to the politicians.

Rabbi Eric Yoffie is a Saint. He is both admirable and brave to stand up against the Zionist Zealots who harm both the US and Israel.

Bravo Rabbi Yoffie..

I applaud you for speaking out against this crazy fundamentalist advocating the "End Times." These Christian Zionists for too long (the course of Dubya's presidency) have had a seat at the table in American politics and need to be exposed for the sham they are. Only the Jewish community has the authority to make such comment in America, for the rest of us would be labeled anti-semitic if we had done so. God Bless you...

Thank you. Someone remembered McCain and his freaks. This is my biggest critique of religion they feel like they have to disparage other religions. I dont understand why we can't all believe what we want to believe without having our beliefs degraded.
