LOS ANGELES — The gambling tale "21" kept up its winning streak as it took in $15.1 million to stay on top of the box office for a second-straight weekend, leaving George Clooney's "Leatherheads" and the family tale "Nim's Island" to scrimmage for second place.

"Leatherheads" _ a 1920s football comedy directed by Clooney, who co-stars with Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski _ had a soft opening of $13.5 million, below distributor Universal's expectations.

20th Century Fox's "Nim's Island" was right behind with $13.3 million. The family adventure centers on a bold girl (Abigail Breslin) alone on an island and her e-mail pen pal (Jodie Foster), an obsessive-compulsive, shut-in author.

"Leatherheads" and "Nim's Island" were so close that their rankings could switch after final weekend numbers are released Monday.

"Leatherheads" is Clooney's third directing effort, a commercial turn after his acclaimed Edward R. Murrow drama "Good Night, and Good Luck" and the Chuck Barris fantasy thriller "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind."

Yet "Leatherheads" earned mixed reviews and mainly drew theatergoers in their 30s and 40s, failing to connect with younger crowds that are the box office's mainstay, according to Universal.

"I'm disappointed for us, I'm disappointed for George. I think he's a great guy and think he's got tons of directing talent," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal. "I wish I could have that crystal ball and tell you what went wrong."

He said some parents who might otherwise have gone to see "Leatherheads" may have been tied up taking children to see "Nim's Island" or the family hit "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!"

20th Century Fox, which had been tracking "Nim's Island" slightly ahead of "Leatherheads," was pleased with the results of its film, said distribution executive Chris Aronson.

"This movie was targeted for families, and we hit the families," Aronson said of "Nim's Island."

Sony's "21," featuring Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess in a Vegas blackjack romp, raised its 10-day total to $46.5 million.

Overall, however, it was another dreary weekend for Hollywood, where business has lagged nearly every weekend since January. The top 12 movies took in $80.9 million, down 27 percent from the same weekend last year.

Revenues are at $2.24 billion so far this year, off 1.8 percent from 2007, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers. Factoring in higher ticket prices, movie attendance is running 5 percent behind last year's.

This weekend's other new wide release _ Paramount's horror story "The Ruins," about tourists who discover an ancient evil during a jungle trip _ debuted at No. 5 with $7.8 million.

In narrower release, Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones concert film "Shine a Light," distributed by Paramount Vantage, did fair business with $1.5 million.

Wong Kar Wai's romantic drama "My Blueberry Nights," starring singer Norah Jones and Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman and David Strathairn, took in a solid $73,742 opening in six theaters.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "21," $15.1 million.

2. "Leatherheads," $13.5 million.

3. "Nim's Island," $13.3 million.

4. "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!", $9.1 million.

5. "The Ruins," $7.8 million.

6. "Superhero Movie," $5.4 million.

7. "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns," $3.51 million.

8. "Drillbit Taylor," $3.5 million.

9. "Shutter," $2.9 million.

10. "10,000 B.C.", $2.8 million.

How are all those lefty anti defeating Hussein films doing?

I find it pretty amusing that some people here effectively say that the movie tanked because Americans are dumb. The kind of snobbery posted here stinks of self-absorbed pseudo-intellectualism but I digress. Could it be that folks are not flocking to this movie because of our current economic situation? Maybe they don't have the extra $40 to $50 to spend on a movie with their date because that money went to the gas pump or something as basic as groceries for the week. Get over yourselves people.

No car chases, No shootouts. No pie fucking = No American viewers.

This country is going to shit. Idiocracy. http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=Z33gpRWWXPA

I just got back from seeing Leatherheads with my 12-year old. She complained that she had to go with me, but she laughed throughout and said it was a really good movie as the credits started to roll.
I think it's probably too smart for some people.

did anyone really think this looked interesting?
Even for football fans?

Two great actors were not enough to get me to go.

Over-hyped and over-exposed.

I am not a Clooney fan, and don't like his acting at all. He stinks, like most of the actors and actresses today.

Clooney is as solid as actors come these days, but not every single film is gonna be a block buster. His last movies have all been amazing (michael clayton, syriana, goodnight and goodluck etc) - so it's ok if this one isnt a slam dunk. I'm sure his movie magic isnt going anywhere anytime soon.

It was pretty packed where I went to as well. Funny movie although I am not much of a fan of whatshername. How do they know Box Office for the weekend by Saturday afternoon??

George is worth watching in any movie he makes and I'm a fan.

I like him in Syriana - complicated but equally interesting political/economic flick.

'Went to the mall for shopping with a friend today. Between 2-5pm, all movies go for $5 bucks with free medium size soda and medium popcorn with all the butter you can have. I loaded mine - the popcorn floated. No re-fills allowed for the soda. Freaking frock ! But really, I shouldn't complain.

Now, I paid $15 to see the 3-version of Beowulf, and then last week, I paid $40 for the DVD. It didn't even come with a gum ! That woman devil of a woman with that body to die for, with those gorgeous lips. I am so jealous. The money was well worth it ! After struggling to read Beowulf in High School, I finally understood why my Lit teacher says it's a classic, and a required reading in High School.

Then I went to buy the book. That was the best part. As to Clooney, I may go and see his movies more often - at 2:00 PM in the mall. Free soda and popcorn. "Can't beat that ! Next time though, I will smuggle cans of cold Pepsi !

The Huffpo's breakdown of the bo for the movie, and for Clooney's prospects, are ludicrous. Firstly, Clooney had enough money from E.R. to never work again--hence, why he's made "social" films for the last decade. If Georgie wants to sign on to be the next Jack Ryan, whoever owns that franchise would be only too happy to accept. Clooney has made a choice to do non-tent pole studio movies, and as long as he makes a workman's wage on these, you'll never see him in another stupid studio extravaganza film again. Except for Soderbergh's films. Clooney will always make those, and for profit.

I saw Leatherheads on Friday afternoon and I enjoyed it. Nothing brilliant, but definitely worth seeing. I enjoyed the fast talking 1930s "screwball comedy" style, the costumes, the art and set decoration, the cinematography and the repartee between Clooney and Zellweger. I thought Stephen Root was excellent as a drunken old sports writer. I'm not surprised the numbers are mediocre though. People these days seem to be looking more for the "gross out" comedies and this isn't one. Still, while the audience during the showing I saw was small, they laughed a fair bit. And as I always watch at least part of the credits and was among the last to leave the theater, I was impressed that I heard so many of the people in front of me commenting to the ticket taker how much they enjoyed the show. One lady said it was nice just to see something worth seeing again. But it was definitely an older audience. Not too many under-30 types.

I just saw the movie @ matinee - this afternoon. I also read Huffpo headline that it was flop - that was this morning before I saw the film. The ticket was $5 bucks, with free popcorn and soda. The movie had its moments, looney and Zellweger had very funny exchanges, and I agree that Root was probably why I like the film..... well kinda. had a few laughs actually. You're right on one thing - I couldn't quite relate to the costumes and the period setting. At matinee though, many of us were bet 25-30, and I am guessing most are even younger. for 5 bucks, - the movie is practically free.......... hence the young crowd and the low gross.

I no film expert though !

For an entertainment site Ms. Finkke has one hell of a weird crowd I"m viewing. He makes adult films for adults. And those are hardly getting made these days. The majority of pictures are greared toward teenagers, but mostly 15 yr old boys. When folks don"t go see a film like this, and i know it"s a certain crowd that will dig this kind of movie. But w/ low turn out, the less films will be made for "adult crowds."

Thats why you get so many Knocked Ups, cartoon moives, Sci-Fi ones, Sequel after sequel. And Clooney is one of a hand full that can green light a picure b/c of his popularity. Hollywood is into making money. Thats it. It doesn"t give a shit if you"re a women in your 50"s and don"t get many films you can relate to. Or vice versa. A man in your 60"s.

So something to think about but I get the impression that the majority on this site aren"t big film fans anyway but conservative haters that listen to what drudge, O"reilly, Ann C. and Hanity or Rush tell them how to think or feel about the hollywood elite. Because after all, theyr'e the enemy about everything wrong w/ america. It"s their fault we have a recession, endless war that wasn"t imperative, housing crisis, etc. It"s unique for so many conservative folks to frequent an entertainment site.

Hey GQ, you sure have mastered lunatic ranting. I love Cloonies work but have no idea what the fuck you are saying. I guess you are just that smart.

I'm saying that I followed the link to where this story came about and found i'd say 85% of the people leaving hate filled garbage about George. Don't believe me? Go see for yourself:

http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/clooney-fumbles-opening-of-leatherheads/

I know that drudge links her articles and the majority are right wing crazies but everytime one of these hollywood big wigs has a film that proforms less than stellar they throw out venom like it was coming from Rush, Hanity, O'Reilly, etc, etc. etc.

These clowns want to blame moviestars for all thats wrong w/ this country. And if one one moment you'd stop thinking i'm the bad guy, you'd see what i'm referring to.

George is out of his element in comedic films, and should stick to proven moneymakers, such as critically important stories laced with political commentary. That's what audiences can't get enough of these days.
