TEHRAN, Iran — Officials in Iran confirmed for the first time Saturday that the country played an important role in brokering a recent truce between the Iraqi government and anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Iran's Shiite government helped end the clashes between Iraqi government troops and al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia for the sake of Shiite unity, said a senior Iranian official who deals with Iraq.

"It is in Iran's best interests to see unity among Shiite factions," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki heads a Shiite-dominated government in Iraq, but has clashed with other Shiite factions in the country, including the one led by al-Sadr.

Al-Maliki sparked clashes with al-Sadr's Mahdi Army over a week ago when he sent government troops to Basra to crack down on Shiite militias. The fighting eased last Sunday after al-Sadr ordered his men off the streets and called on the Iraqi government to end its attacks.

The Iranian government helped broker the truce during high-level talks in Iran's holy city of Qom with Shiite Iraqi officials and senior supporters of al-Sadr, said a prominent Iraqi party official based in Tehran.

"Iran played a mediating role and helped ease things a lot," said the Iraqi official, also speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

"Given its influence over al-Sadr, Iran convinced the Sadrists to stop fighting," he said.

U.S. officials in Baghdad have acknowledged an Iranian role in the talks but also accuse Iran of providing much of the weaponry used during the recent fighting, including rocket salvos against the U.S.-controlled Green Zone in Baghdad.

U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker said last Thursday that he wasn't sure the Iranians were instrumental in convincing al-Sadr to stop fighting "or whether they just didn't stop him from doing it."

The Iraqi government sent a three-member delegation that was headed by a prominent Shiite lawmaker close to al-Maliki, Ali Adeeb, and also included two of his Shiite colleagues, Hadi al-Amri and Qassem Sahlani, said the Iraqi official based in Tehran. The meetings in Qom also included representatives from Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, he said.

Al-Sadr is believed to divide his time between Qom and Najaf, another Shiite holy city in Iraq 100 miles south of Baghdad. But Iranian government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham denied al-Sadr's presence in Iran on Saturday, saying "this is what the occupying forces claim to divert the attention from what is going on in Iraq."

Iran's role in hammering out the peace deal is believed to have boosted Tehran's influence among Iraq's majority Shiite community.

U.S. and Iraqi authorities have insisted the Basra operation was not aimed at al-Sadr's powerful political movement but was aimed at ridding the streets of criminals and gunmen who had effectively ruled the city since 2005.

But al-Sadr's supporters believe the crackdown was aimed at weakening their movement before provincial elections this fall. Al-Sadr expects to score major electoral gains against Shiite parties that work with the Americans.

Senator Jim Webb said today on Face the Nation that when he was in Vietnam he never saw an enemy weapon that was not made by the Chinese or in Eastern Europe. That it why it is so surprising when we express disbelief that Iran is supplying weapons to the Iraqi resistance. When the Soviets fought the Afghans we supplied the Afghans. Thus, it is confusing now when we speak of attacking Iran for supplying weapons. Should we have attacked China during the Vietnam war? Did Russia consider attacking us when they fought the Afghans? It is a recipe for constant warmongering and always attacking the next perceived enemy.

God forbid that Bush and Co admit that Iran did something good. It would put a damper in their plan for Middle east domination. Now if they can just link Iran to 911 somehow, they would have it made.

Iraq and Iran were once bitter enemies. Fortunately, Bush, the uniter, has brought them together and they now almost ask if they were the same country. Iraq has fallen under the umbrella of Iran and we now may as well start removing our troops and let events play themselves out. Perhaps Al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, is a channel for us to open up negotiations with Iran on various topics.

The Neocons have always intended to attack Iran, they just need to come up with a reason to sell the American people. After the debacle in Iraq, Americans are finally waking up. Remember the NIE that said Iran was not constituting nuclear weapons? We had almost non stop warnings from this administration about the imminent threat and poof- our own intelligence agencies leaked the threat was as bogus as Saddam's WMD's. Ask yourself, why would Iran antagonize us? They know this administration has an itchy nuke finger aimed at them. Why would they do that? They wouldn't and they haven't. Just like the run up to Iraq, all the threats were manufactured. They are doing it again.

They had a great 2 part , 2 hour documentary on Link Tv a month or so ago where a British reporter showed the real Iran. Nothing like what the Bushtards say it is.

Thanks so much for this Iran slideshow. This should be sent to everyone we know that has a chance at de-programming themselves.

As someone who travels extensively, I can witness to all that a nice slideshow could be made of ANY country.

Beware of anyone who demonizes another culture. They are willing to kill people so they can take their stuff. Hate is a deadend.

Wow. I know parts of Iraq used to look the same before we destroyed it.

I had a Social Studies teacher who made us watch Night Line every day from 1984-1986.

Looking at this disaster I I wonder how many people knew that the majority of people in Iraq are Shia.

With the Bush misinformation train running full steam ahead we were told that there were Bathist and the majority was Non- Bathist.

In 2003 I'm quite sure most had no idea the so called Non-Bathist were the cousins of Iran.
Bush himself thought they were just all Muslim. I expect no less from him though.
I remember telling people that if we invade Iraq you are handing it to Iran
.
To not know this you would have to be completely ignorant and have absolutely no knowledge of the country.

If I knew this can someone please explain to me why Hillary voted for this war.

The more I think about it the more upset I get with her.

She had the chance to stand up for what was right but instead she's just another so called leader
that didn't lead when this country needed it most.

I'm adding her to my Colin " The Sellout" Powell list.

Imagine if she would have stood up and said no this is wrong and lead the fight.

This wouldn't even be a race.

Powell did sell out. Armitage and he has said they never really opposed attacking Iraq, but Powell should have known much of the intelligence was doctored.

wait! Where are the camels? just kidding...it would have been nice if there were some context to the images. Like which part of Iran they were taken.

Unfortunately, Iran has pissed off Israel and as a result it wont get any positive press in US.

What a shame that sources with ties to Iran are more believable than our own government. Would anyone have ever dreamed that America would ever find itself in this position. America with a rogue government. And bin Laden still lives in safety. Unbelievable indeed.

So Iranians are peace brokers? What's next Arafat will get the Nobel Peace Prize?

This war was illegal and unfortunately Iran is waging "Charlie's War" against us and this administration has another agenda which does not include helping the Iraqis not the American people.

Impeach Now!

The "conspiracy theorists" have been right, and as time passes its going to become more clear, on just how diabolical, how "straight from hell" this administration has been. Its the perfect storm of a group of Sociopaths taking over our country...and we have yet to pull them out of the white house..and march them to Prison...

Julescator : there is no proof that Iran is trying to make nuclear weapons. They are allowed to have nuclear power. And if they DID get nuclear weapons-so what? They are surrounded by countries that have them.If they ever got them, they would not use them on Israel;they aren't stupid. The Bush administration doesn't want Iran nuclear-armed because they want to keep them from defending themselves-although they could put up a good fight without them.
And when Bush attacks Iran, what happens when Russia steps in because of the big fat oil deals they have with Iran...?

The waste.
Shia solidarity is necessary for the eventual take over of Iraq, and expansion of Iranian influence in the region. Iran is not singing, Give Peace a Chance. Iran is regrouping, organizing, setting the scene. If Iraq is peaceful enough, then there is all the more reason to insist the US leave, but there is no reason to have the US leave until Iran has enough influence. Iran might demand now for US withdrawal, but they know that will not happen, so they play the game and try to take control of as many chess pieces as possible. Remember, this was going to be easy. But Bush wanted private contractors, which cost a lot of money; and Cheney wanted private contractors which cost a lot of money; and the dearly departed Rumsfeld wanted a business model with too few military personnel, not quite correctly equipped, and too little military equipment and supplies. Too many games being played, too much money being made. Peace would have cost less. Never go into a war without adequate resources. You go to war with the army you have, but we had more of an army, et cetera than we used. Now the misspent lives are well worn. I had no idea how the GWB incompetence would harm even our military. The waste. Mark John Hunter Alpena.

One more blow to the Bush administration. Iran calls the shots as I can see and this is truly the end of the story. We Americans have been duped by a foreign policy full of mistakes, lies and deceptions. The only winners here are Syria and Iran. Iraq will only flourish when our soldiers come home with the corresponding deserved dignity. Our soldiers are fighting a battle that does not corresponds to them in history terms.

This administration has blown out many opportunities to solve this debacle and again, with the surge, has been able to realize that it is over. Bush in his insanity continues, like Hitler, to believe that he can win this war. Bush, after leaving office, will become the new Saddam of Iraq.

Incredible. Iran has more say in Iraq than the US 155,000 troops and an estimated at 200,000 'civilian contractors.'

Time to call it a day, and hand over the keys to Iran. It certainly can keep order better than the US can - even after the US engaged the Basra insurgents from the air and with at least 500 troops - according to NPR this morning.

Not only did we screw up the occupation, but we helped the enemy of the adminsitration and its allies in the region.

Fantastic. We await with abated breath the victories General Betrayus will carry with him to Congress.

The Taliban is OUR bastard, morphed from the jihadists and Al Quidas from the Pakistani Madrases, that we armed and supported against the Russians in Afghanistan. The Iranians hold no briefs for the Taliban and is quite prepared to stand back and watch the American and the Taliban destroy each other.

When its a Sunni/ Al Quida vs US conflict they stay the hell out. However, the Hakim's Badrs and the Muqtada's Sadrs are Shiites so Iran sees no benefit in a Shiite vs Shiite conflict. Iraq is a quagmire because the US can't fight it's way out but must negotiate an exit strategy. There is no UN to draw up any agreement since the war is illegal and the coalition of the dummies have long since disbanded. Bush is unable to do so without losing face so he plans to leave it all to the new President, presumably a Democrat will have to sign some sort peace treaty, since we have already lost and the troops are there like fish in a barrel.

Failure is an orphan, but everyone wants to take credit for success. The Iraqi governament with US support defeated al Sadr's forces. Once al Sadr surrendered, everyone try to claim credit, even to the extent of the surrender monkeys trying to spin this as a victory for the enemy. It doesn't wash, the Surge is working.
