I've spent a fair amount of time the last couple of weeks with conservatives of all ages and leanings. Call it my very own listening tour.

It began with a series of conversations with a group of Weekly Standard subscribers. Then, last week, I had lunch with the only three conservatives in Cambridge, Mass.; participated in an event in New York with the leadership of Vets for Freedom; mixed and mingled with Republicans before a speech in Michigan; and, on Friday, attended a reception for friends of Bill Buckley after his memorial service at St. Patrick's, then discussed politics that evening with conservative college students at Georgetown University.

Apart from accumulating a few frequent flier miles, what do I have to show for my travels? I can report that lots of conservatives and Republicans expect Barack Obama to be our next president.

I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message

The point of Billy Kristol's latest column is that while (some) Repos
expect Obama to win, many Demos expect McCain to win.
Not to worry. The independents will decide this thing.

Says Billy: ...'But a surprising number of Democrats with whom I"ve spoken expect a McCain victory. One told me he was struck by the current polls showing a dead-even race, suggesting both a surprising openness to McCain among Americans who disapprove of Bush and a striking hesitation among the same voters about Obama.' ...

It has been suggested previously that the 'ideal' way to organize the
presidential election is for the Repos to pick the Demo candidate,
and the Demos to pick the Repo man. Apparently, Krystol agrees,
at least with the first part.

If there is a myth that Demos in large number support McCain, and
Demos are dumb enough to accept such hooey, then why go on?

What Kristol fails to mention, whether intentionally or not, is that Obama's win in November will represent the beginning of an Enduring Democratic Majority and New Progressive Era in American politics. Kristol, as well as all of the Republican establishment that he mentions, is scared. It reminds me of the early-19th century British naval commander, who, at the first sign of the French tri-color, would call for his red vest in order to hide any blood that might demoralize his men. But when the American warships sailed into view, he called instead for his brown trousers. Me thinks Kristol and company have just called for their brown trousers.

Why is Bill Kristol not in jail?

How like our little Willy to make fun of Democratic conventions. Apparently, he forgot about his buffoons in their straw hats, blue polyester suits, and bogus rhinestone flag pins (and don't forget the white shirts and red ties) waggling their purple-Band-aided fingers and smirking and pretending that there was something "patriotic" about supporting a chickenhawk who slimed a combat veteran (again).

DISGUSTING!

I had to chuckle at the "he's not who you think he is" ads idea. I've been hearing that same proposal as applied to McCain ever since he clinched the nomination. Although McCain has long been the darling of the media and of independents, about 85% of the time he votes with the far right. How independent is that?
Personally, I'm hoping that one of two things happens:
1. The American people decide (for once) to vote issues instead of personalities. If this happens, McCain's voting record will clearly identify him as just another right-wing nut case, albeit a quirky one.
or
2. The American people (as often happens) vote personalities. If this happens, and Obama is the Dem's candidate, Obama wins easily. McCain has little personality, and what he does have is annoyingly grumpy.
Assuming Obama is the Dem's candidate, the only scenario under which McCain wins is if the American people (as, unfortunately, also often happens) respond to scare tactics. Repubs always need to have a Great Enemy to frighten people with. Used to be the Commies, but when that wore out they created the Islamic Terrorists. Worked for Bush in '04, could work for McCain in '08.

Obama is enjoying a bit of a honeymoon with repubs. Why should they waste their dollars when Billary is doing the job for them? But after the nomination, the gloves will be off and Barack will be playing against the opposing team, not scrimmaging with his own.

The honeymoon with the american public will be over and substantive suggestions will need to take the place of hyperbole. If he is successful some repubs will cross over. If not, then he will lose.

Did you even see the scene the day before yesterday when ole' John was touting the success of the Iraq war, and was interrupted by a news flash about bombs falling in the green zone?

All Obama has to do is incorporate THAT into a commercial and the glorifier of war is toast.

People have stopped paying attention to the war....only 28% knew that the death toll for our military had reached 4,000, but the truth about the surge is about to come crashing down on McCain's head.

Now they have Bush's tool (the sweetest catch in Bush's politicization of our military) Petraeus testifying. I hope that the Democrats nail him to the wall.

I am so damn sick of having life and death matters determined by people who are death careerists...who see wars as the only solution to every diplomatic problem. And when they drag in the military (who, afterall, are being paid by TAXPAYERS to look out for the interests of the country) it just makes the situation that much worse. If we can't trust our military to have leaders who aren't tools of a corrupt administration, who can we trust?

At least that is what you have been told to think.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:06 AM on 04/08/2008

Nobody tells me what to think. The thing is I PAY ATTENTION! Can McCain supporters say the same thing when they continue to flack for a man who can't tell the difference between Iraq and Iran and between Sunni and Shiia? All they know is that he LOVES war, and, apparently, that is enough for them.

Bill has had a jones for McCain for a long time. He sees him as someone who will keep going until every country seen as a threat to Israel is destroyed. That is his sole concern.

Kristol is a dangerous fool. He, Cheney, Perle and Feith are the architects of the Iraqi war. They own the war, and along with Bush are responsible for the tens of thousands (or more) dead.
To see how much of a fool Kristol really is view him on Colbert's show in April of 06. Colbert asks, "how's that project for the New American Century going?" To which Kristol turns red faced, pauses, stammers and says, "I'm speechless." Then Colbert advocates "taking out" more dictators to which Kristol agrees ! "Which one do we take out next?" asks Colbert. Kristol is dumbfounded. Ahhh.
As to this election, Kristol is just as disconnected. These guys have made so many mistakes where does one start? Come October, with Obama challenging McCain on issues such as the unpopular war, the sagging economy, unregulated banking industry gone amok, health care, education, poverty, Republican scandals at Justice and in congress, while linking him to an unpopular incumbent, lets ask Kristol, "how's the Republican campaign going ?" "I'm Speechless, say you heard what Obama's preacher said three years ago?"

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:31 AM on 04/08/2008

umm actually I think Kristol is really saying he expects to beat us, even tho other GOPers don't. He makes good points about what they will do to him. We laugh at this at our peril.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:06 AM on 04/08/2008

He always thinks they are going to win everything. He thought they would gain seats in the last election. Republicans have been able to turn Iraq from the disater it is, into a success simply by saying it is a success over and over. They now feel they can change anything, simply saying it will be how they want it. I am waiting for;

"we where never at war with Iraq. We have always been at war with Iran"

It is the same logic the GOP has fallen to using.

The post above said everythin there is to say about Kristal.

"Kristol is a dangerous fool"

Nice media manipulation with this article, I had no idea how frighten some conservatives are of losing. Hard to sleep these days, uh Kristol. But stop lieing to yourself and croonies. McCain don't have a chance against Obama.

Who wants a Republican President that calls his wife a c* nt? We already had a Democratic President who treated his wife that way.

Kristol this is no longer about Republicans and Democrats, its about Americans no longer pretending they are from Canada when they travel. McCain, NOT! Clinton, NOT!

Obama 08!

You have a point there....my son and his fiance teach overseas , and I am worried everytime they travel with their American passports. They are tolerant, friendly, and charming and the best kind of ambassadors for this country, but there is still a chance that they will be captured by people who pay attention only to their passports, and they do like to go to dangerous places.

RE MCain and his wives. This is his second wife. He dumped the first one after she waited years for him to be released from the prison camp. He had an opportunity to leave the prison (in deference to his father's high military position) but he declined. Later his wife was very seriously and pretty much permanently injured in a car crash and certainly could have used his help at home, but he opted to remain with "his men." And as soon as he got out, he replaced wife #1 with a much younger version, one with a rich father who could help finance his entry into politics. And much later he (expediently) embraced the man who slimed his little girl. That is McCain family values for you.

just the idea that this loser writes for the NY Times tells you just how right wing that paper really is.

in fact, just try to find a single example where the times didnt support a single war or a single bombing or invasion of a country.

besides if you read the whole piece it doesnt imply what this headline states.

remember NO ms media wants to see Obama , a black man , become the most powerful man in the world.

and the times will try like the washington post to take him down,

What a relief. At first I thought Kristol was about to predict an Obama win, but then he goes on to hint at a McCain win. Kristol's record is perfect on opposite day. If he says Obama will have trouble against McCain, expect an Obama blow-out in November.

Why do we give him by saying his name and discussing him. We should never mention him or the evil doer in the White House ever again.

i personally agree.....i think we should never name a republican ever again....in fact lets just give them one name and stick with it.....those we do not speak of lol straight from m.knight

Repubs support Obama because it worked when they supported Nader.

I don't know whether it's too early to cry about the General defeat, or it's too late to rescusitate Hillary from our little progressive lynch mob.

Hope you guys are happy with your "Anybody but Clinton" candidate.
