Rachel Dratch is learning it's not funny being an out-of-work comedian. She left Saturday Night Live two years ago and then was replaced on 30 Rock. What's she up to now? "Maybe you can tell me," she said at a Smart People screening on March 31. "I know you're supposed to come up with fake stuff you're doing. But honestly, I'm not doing much." After SNL's hectic pace, isn't downtime nice? "It's starting to get old," she said. "I'm starting to go crazy. I'm ready for a job." The low point came, she said, when last month's Vanity Fair arrived with its cover story on women in comedy, featuring a dozen top comediennes--none of whom was Dratch. "Dude, that was a dark day," she recalled.

The Vanity Fair piece was all about how funny women are today... and hot! And kept bringing up this point. As if to say that if women were just funny it wouldn't be enough, and it certainly wouldn't be worth Vanity Fair's cover.

It was sexist and stupid and poorly written. Don't feel bad about not being in it, Rachel. It made all involved look the worse for it.

I miss Debbie Downer!

Perhaps SNL can replace the laughably unfunny Tina Fey with this unfortunate comedianne.

Um... Tina left the show years ago. She stars in (and is the head writer of) a show called "30 Rock." The funniest show on TV at the moment (although neck and neck with "The Office.")

Rachel, you were funny. But don't sweat it because SNL is not funny anymore and the Vanity Fair article about how funny the current SNL women are is bottom of the birdcage material. I thought that MAYBE with Christopher Walken hosting for the 100th time - his words this past Sat night, that just part of it would be funny - NOT. We turned it OFF when they got to the musicians. Nothing was funny. And the stupid video short by Andy S - a ten year old boy with a video camera could do better. I don't know who is writing, but all they can come up with for women characters is either disparaging or annoying or both, but not funny. The VF article praises Kristen Wig but all her characters are just annoying and you can see that the celebrities are embarrassed in them because they are so bad. Watching Kristen and some of the other SNL bits featuring the women is like watching someone's spoiled, annoying kid misbehave in public - and that's not funny.

MORE COWBELL!

...and less fey.

They get rid of the best people. That's why SNL is getting worse and worse..
Where is Horatio Sanz?

You're undermining your case there, friend-o.

Debbie Downer! She was too funny!

No only does she need a new agent, but she should be writing her own stuff!! In case you missed it, women have to be able to write their own stuff because there's nothing for them in Hollyweird. You've got to be creative. There are many stars who've ended up forming their own production companies just to get in front of the competition so they'll have work. Drew Barrymore, Sally Field, et al, have created their own companies so they get the money & the credit. Salma Hayek even got the Oscar for one of her production team on Frida.

She'll just have to write her own success . . .

Sorry for being so clued-out, but why was replaced on 30 Rock? For that matter, HOW was she replaced on 30 Rock? Didn't she just play lots of small, mostly non-recurring roles, like the cat lady and the blue thing without feet?

She was going to be the star of "The Girlie Show" but she was replaced by Jane Krackowski. I don't know if there's any bad blood between her and Tina for the replacement, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Weren't there reports that the reason Rachel was dumped was because "brass" and not Tina wanted someone "prettier" and "more appealing" to the audience? That's what I read at the time and it came off as NBC or someone high up pushing Rachel out for Jane (who albeit is quite talented too).

Tina was quoted - or someone was quoted - as saying that Rachel would be a recurring character on the show instead. It sounded way fishy at the time and I thought that Rachel most likely was hurt by it all. Her appearances when the show finally ran were hilarious, btw.

But I can just hear someone up high saying "Oy, we got this Tina woman with the glasses, brunette - we need a blond to offset her, a pretty blond - we can't have another brown haired comic as the "lead" in the fake show within the show."

Rachel, hang in there. Talent will win out.

Her job in the first place was a bit of a case of nepotism though.....

You'd have to think not, since they keep using her for lots of little things. In fact I just thought of a another one -- she was the low life Eastern Eurpoean prostitute Alec Baldwin picked up. And I'll bet she'd done more. If I were a little less lazy I'd go to IMDB to find out, but....

Dratch has one gift as a comedienne -- she looks funny. No really, she has a slapstick sense about her that makes her perfect for certain roles. I loved her as the Boston girl who was the girlfriend of Jimmy Fallon. Good stuff.

Rachel does have a nice rack, though. How about a Playboy layout with her in a teddy? I'd hit it.

Rachel was great on SNL. She had some very funny and memorable characters. Her team up with Will Ferrell as "Roger & Virginia" was just brilliant and totally original. Hope she gets a break and starts working again.

Let's see... she is not ugly, just a plain ol' vanilla gal that looks every day of the age she is. She is not untalented , but then all of us has SOME talent, we just don't all expect to be famous for it. She has an average body...nothing spectacular, but nothing to hide in a gunny sack. KNows how to speak in public using both verbs and nouns...
But, she DOES want to work in show business and apparently in front of the camera.
So.... let's see... what job would be best for her...
OH YEAH... She sounds perfect for "THE VIEW".

Excellent SharonB. That would be the perfect place for her. At least she would be able to provide some good laughs during the show.

Rachel, I thought you were one of the best things about SNL. You were and are hilarious, talented and versatile. I look forward to seeing you again in whatever project is lucky enough to have you.

She realyl was one of the best at SNL during that time. I think that she's a helluva lot funnier to watch than Tina Fey.

Emnity "Fair" went out of their way to emphasize the looks of the comedians they profiled. Ony Amy Sedaris allowed herself to "ugly up" for the photos...

You're not working because you're not funny and you have weird eyes.

I swear these celebrity stories attract the most asinine, loones.

#99: did I say I was a comedian and could do a better job then her? No. I didnt. I said she's not funny and has weird eyes. Comedy is a subjective thing big guy and I don't think she's funny, and very few people think she's funny, that's why she got booted from 30 Rock and isn't funny.

Same reply to falgiano there ... I'm not wrong, you're wrong. You knob.

She's not funny and she has weird eyes and she'll probably have to move back in with her mom ...

It's simple, the answer is. It's all due to "Image". She doesn't have it, even for a comdian and Hollywood is strict on image. I always thought she was pretty funny.

I think ol' Rachel is one seriously funny woman. I don't understand why 30 Rock dropped her form her recurring role as just about anyone. Debbie Downer indeed.

Poor Rachel Dratch! Most actors would love to be as "unemployed" as her. Internet Movie Database lists her as acting in NINE roles in 2008 (www(dot)imdb(dot)com(slash)name(slash)nm0237222):

Movies:
Odd Brodsky (in pre-production) .... Audrey Brodsky (title role)
Sweet Flame (now filming) .... Carol
Spring Breakdown (in post-production)
My Life in Ruins (in post-production) .... Kim
Love N' Dancing (in post-production) .... Kalle
Harold (completed) .... Ms. Norris
Bill .... Dr. Robardo

Animation voiceroles:
Squidbillies .... "Worst Earth" episode .... Hippie Woman
Aqua Teen Hunger Force .... "Robots Are Everywhere " episode .... Robot Wife

Maybe it's just because you aren't that funny?

I used to pretty much ignore your skits for a reason. They were dreadfully boring. Not to happy with 30 Rock either. If it wasn't or Alec, the show would have bombed big time.

So maybe hit the road and hone your standup skills and try to learn what being funny is all about.

I disagree

SNL has been lackluster for years, but she was one of the better sketch comics

"30 Rock" is an Emmy award winning show. And, it's not all about Alec Baldwin.

Dratch as Barbera Walters on 30 rock:

"Your father Werner was a burger server in suburban Santa Barbara, when he spurned your mother Verna for a curly-haired surfer named Roberta. Did that hurt her?"

One of the funniest things I have ever seen on TV

The Vanity Fair article was about women being funny and very pretty, as though this were a new idea. My favorite SNLers have always been women. Laraine Newman, Jan Hooks, Nora Dunn, Cheri Oteri, Julia Sweeney, Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch. All pretty, all very funny.

Rachel shouldn't do something retaahded like get a job at the Burlington Mall or something. She's very funny and we miss her. Andrea Martin became a big Broadway star. Catherine O'Hara's a movie star. Why not Rachel Dratch?

And Kathy Griffin, Margaret Cho and I think Tracey Ullmann weren't in that Vanity Fair article either.
