Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin said Hillary Clinton's criticism of the Iowa caucuses and Barack Obama's advantage among independent voters would weigh on his decision, should he declare his support for one or the other.

Harkin has said he will remain uncommitted at least until after the final state nominating contests are held on June 3.

But in a Des Moines Register interview, he said the candidates' views on keeping the caucuses in their traditional leadoff position and their performance among independent voters are especially important to him.

Irony is a wonderful thing.

Hillary's only path to the nomination is to convince superdelegates to support her. However, it seems her argument of electability, which diminished the states she lost, has offended the people that represent those states. The very people she needs to win the nomination.

How rich.

interesting insight.

Senator Harkin, time to endorse Obama. You saw what he did to the Clinton campaign in your state of Iowa. Obama rolled over her in style. She came in third!

I like Harkin. He's one of the best Senators out there (I was pulling for him in the '92 Democratic primary). He's been quite friendly with the Clintons and faithfully campaigned for Bill Clinton in Iowa.

I would love to see him go for Obama.

Harkin's annual Iowa Dem Steak Fry was this year a fine opportunity to see and hear the candidates.
Yes, Harkin's a good guy. Isn't he up for re-election? Let's keep him there, we need Senators like him.

That's right, I forgot he's running this year! I'm sure he'll have no problem.

Poor guy, now the Taylor Marsh crowd will start barraging him with emails and phone calls. They don't like to lose SDs and use threats and intimidation to try to keep them in line. Hmm, wonder where they learned that from?

What? Why would it bother him that Clinton doesn't like caucuses? I mean, it's not like those matter, or are held in REAL states (like the big 'uns) or as if they reflect the will of the people. Harkin is just a little too sensitive. He should know that Clinton is right. Only the big states matter. (tongue planted firmly in cheek).

It's interesting that the only votes Clinton thinks matters are those that favor her. Count all the votes? Not hardly.

Yeah...like Texas.

dork.

I don't understand Hillary's logic - wherever she didn't win she blames the people there or discount their votes mean nothing. How can she run the country by doing this? Hillary the President of five big states?

Leaning?! Fall already! You know you want to, Harkin. Just do it. Yes you can!

Harkin should announce his endorsement - clearly and with passion. He shouldn't remain just a spectator.

Also keep in mind that an endorsement at this time from a Senator of some stature can later look as though he "bought" a position. Also, the timing of the endorsement and (sadly)how much media interest it generates also counts.
Damned if you do, damned if you don;t.

Good for him, hopefully he's seen the light and Billary isn't in it.

What is now a trickle will be a deluge in June after the last primary. All the Super Ds should declare their vote then. Michigan and Florida will be a moot point and so will HRC's campaign.

I can't wait for the Obama-McCain debates. It will be Kennedy-Nixon all over again.

Barack is not a good debater though. I wish he was like Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, then he would have wiped the floor with Mc Same.

I was born 30 years after those debates, but I've made the same comparison repeatedly in the past few months. Except, McCain and Clinton take turns playing Nixon. A few months ago, I looked at some of the transcripts of Nixon's stump speeches and the Kennedy-Nixon debates. Here's what I found:

*On the stump, says "my friends" every few sentences
*Stump speech: "we cannot afford to have the White House used as a TRAINING GROUND for an INEXPERIENCED MAN with irrational impulses!"
*Debate: "Senator Kennedy and I both care very deeply about these issues."
*Kennedy and Nixon didn't have many policy differences
*Nixon's claim to "experience" was a bunch of foreign junkets. He wasn't involved in any major foreign policy decisions.

Could not agree MORE! You can't insult every state you lost and not expect backlash. I'm sure he is not the only SuperD feeling this way.

He has to be a Super D. All senators and congresspersons are.

I hope Senator Harkin has a conscience and is ready to denounce and reject Hillary Clinton for her disgraceful campaign.

Woo hoo. Harkin is loving the Obama.
