The Clinton camp faced a series of questions from reporters seeking to clarify what, exactly, is Penn's new role with the campaign.

"I appreciate the question, but I'm not going to answer it," said Howard Wolfson in a campaign call today.

He did, however the following example, tailored specially for his audience: "The difference would be between the editor-in-chief of your newspaper and somebody who plays an important role in your newspaper but isn't in charge," he said, adding that it was the difference "between somebody who is playing the key role and somebody who is playing an important role."

The Clinton camp also argued that Penn's actions were less bad than those made by Austan Goolsbee during last month's NAFTA flap, which prompted this response from the Obama camp:

"Even though Senator Clinton said she'd distance herself from her chief strategist for meeting with the Colombian government, we later found out that he's still very much part of her strategy team. The comparison Senator Clinton tried to make today is laughable, but also typical of a candidate who has said one thing but done another this entire campaign."

The Clinton campaign's plan from Mark Penn.

"We can spin the media into broadcasting the stories about my resignation on a Saturday and convince the public that I'm off the team. Then, I'll poll the country to see if the public is paying attention, if not, I'll put together a focus group study to see how they react to my not leaving the campaign but just give myself a new job title." "Wow, I can charge the Clinton's several million for all this work......"

Imagine a Hil-liar-y Clinton administration; the thought is laughable. I am already a foreigner, so I could easily go live in Canada. I wanted to do it after Bush 2004, and this will be too much, 12 years of lies, manipulations and distortions, so I may just follow through.

If she gets the nomination, I'll join you.

Ah, kinda like being the head of the SS, he now just has a smaller role like Geobbels. Much clearer now, thanx Wolfson.

Penn is still there. Get ready for a barrage of attack ads against Obama in Pennsylvania. They will be right before the voting, so there won't be time for the press, media or Obama to respond. Work up the voters with attacks, whether true or not, get the votes and laugh at the poor people who believed the stories. It is becoming a habit.

Oh no. We're back to "It depends on what the meaning of 'is' is."

Penn shilled for Hillary in Colombia just like he did for NAFTA with the Canadians. Won't someone PLEASE ask her about it? As for his role--here's the answer. He was doing what she wanted. His role is UN. CHANGED.

Obama should worry about the clowns he has in his own campaign and those loud mouths who are now being silenced from HQ. If he thinks it's tough against Hillary...wait until the Repubs get hold of him and his dirt, should he be fortunate enough to squeak out the nom.

Oh, here we go again: "My candidate is absolutely perfect; anyone else is absolute crap."

In these blogs I've seen so many varations on a theme of, "You're either with us or against us," or "If you disagree with me then you must be destroyed."

Looks like you take your cues from the right wing, just like they want you to. You bought into their concept of public discourse hook, line and sinker. No critical thinking allowed.

Folks, we have two great candidates here...Vote in November for whomever wins the nomination.

We expect the redumblicans to do that, but we don't expect a supposed member of our own camp to knee another.

Yeah, what's up with this guy and why does the Clinton campaign protect him? He embarrasses her, and he still is around? Does he have some kind of iron-clad contract with her?

Read about Dick Morris and his current writings and you'll see why the Clintons are keeping Mark Penn on a short leash.

That's the problem with the Clinton's. You don't know for 20 years and then it all comes out... too late.

This is Son of NAFTA-GATE. A ploy to distract
from the Clinton tax returns which came out the
same day, as well as to give Clinton an opportunity
to get huge FREE publicity by 'firing her campaign
manager' because he 'does not support her opposition
of free trade.'

This is the same stunt Penn pulled with the Candadians
which gave Hill Ohio, he's done it again and
she's jumped 16 points in Pennsylvania overnight.

Being fired was probably part of the scenario, this
way Penn can be fired twice with all the attendant
phblicity.

He's already gotten ten million from the campaign,
this is only good advertising for his particular business.

Hillary's campaign is in debt big time, last night
ABC news feed would end every newcast with
the sentence (said emphatically)

MRS. CLINTON OPPOSES FREE TRADE.

And now she's up between five and sixteen points
in Pennslyvania. She'll probably make Penn her
Chief of Staff when she's elected. They've been
together for the past eleven years.

* SAY ANYTHING - DO ANYTHING * -- rules & ethics be damned -- That's the Clintons. What I can't figure out is why people still cling to them.

Decades of brain entrainment via
soap operas.

Look at the age and gender of
Hill's support. Older women.

They were rapt with the Clinton
Soap Opera as Bill lied every single day
between February and August 2002 . .
'I did not have sex with that woman,
Miss Lewinsky' and the emotionally
battered enabling wife, Hillary, just stood
there with a tragic smile and let Bill lie.

I expect to see Rovian dramatics from
the Clintons, what I hate the most is the
coarsening of American culture thanks
tho Bill's lyin' sex escapades. Jennifer
Flowers has put his phone tapes up
for the highest bid so if Hill is elected,
expect it to go on and on and on . . .

Polls shows that kids started engaging
in all kinds of sexual behavior, oral and anal,
after the Lewinsky thing captured the
headlines. The Clintons literally dragged America into the gutter.

Our Leader Hillary just stood there and let
Bill lie and lie and lie. She didn't show
enough leadership to tell him, 'Bill, get out
there, apologize to the Nation, to Ms.
Lewinsky, to your wife and tell them that
you're getting counseling from your
minister.'

If she had done that on day one, our
nation would have had great respect for
her and she mow wouldn't have to rely on
Rovian tactics from the likes of Penn.

If I were a Hillary supporter/contributor, I sure wouldn't want to be contributing to pay Penn's salary.

You're paying for someone just like Penn and more, I'm sure.

Penn is just a consultant.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:46 PM on 04/08/2008

A consultant, yes. But a damn lousy one. What has Hillary gotten for her money? A lousy and mismanaged campaign. Were Penn working for a large company and cost the company jobs, he would have been fired long ago.

Well . . . we've all seen this kind of thing before . . . Karl Rove. Just WHAT WAS his position in the White House Staff? Not subject to oversight, on the payroll, subject to Executive Priviledge, calling the shots but not subject to scruitiny.

Is anyone else tired of this crap and interested in more transparency in government?

The choice is CLEAR and it clearly is not HRC.

"You misspoke before. You're not "stepping down." I'm taking you out at the knees. The whole point is to prove that you're not deciding anything anymore. I"m firing you. Action's taken. Confidence restored. Stock goes up. I sell my shares."
- Michael Douglas in "The Game"

This is Hillary"s problem. She doesn"t get the basics. People are watching and they are seeing that she lets her campaign define her negatively rather than actively defining her campaign. She should have forced Penn to discontinue his responsibilities at his lobbying firm BEFORE bringing him on as her chief campaign strategist. She didn"t. After this story broke, she should have immediately fired Penn to send the message that "I am a leader; I am in charge of my campaign." Instead her campaign said "Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as chief strategist." Now he is hanging on around the fringes and the Clinton campaign refuses to define his current role in the campaign. Even worse, Penn is out there saying "Don"t be fooled, I am still an integral part of Hillary"s campaign." The funny thing is that, by all accounts, he isn"t even giving her sound political advice. So all she is getting out of this is the negative effects from prolonging the story and the constant drumbeat of people pointing to her poor judgment.

No, it's much worse than that. It's a setup
to get a bump in the Pennsylvania polls.

She was so far down she had nothing to lose
and then there was the problem of the tax
returns.

She was losing Pennsylvania, that would have
definitely put her out of the race, so Penn
went down to Columbia and set up Son of
NAFTA-GATE. I explain this in a post above.

Penn = Colombia, Blackwater, Countrywide......and the candidate is adamantly opposed to issues connected with these. Why would you employ someone with those ties? Even the appearance of a conflict of interest should be avoided and this long list goes way beyond that.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:14 PM on 04/08/2008

"Why would (she) employ someone with those ties?"

Well, perhaps it's because she (and Bill) are part and parcel of the Friedmanomics view of economic policy that has ruled government for more than two decades now and that is responsible for the vast increase in wealth for those at the top (as well as their facilitators like Penn and Billary) and the great decline for in income and worker rights for those at the bottom. The real question is why people in Pennsylvania, Ohio or anywhere else who are part of the working class would vote for Hillary at all when there is so much evidence out there - despite her self-portrayals - that she is simply doing the bidding of the ruling elites and costing them jobs, money, housing, and health care.
