Earlier this morning, Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) took time out from the rigors of their Iraq War hearings to play a little game of patty-cake over how well the Iraqi government has been meeting their benchmarks. Cornyn asserted - with Crocker's agreement - that the Iraqis had successfully met 12 of the 18 stipulated benchmarks. As it turns out, Crocker was off by nine. In the wrong direction.

According to John Podesta, Ray Takeyh and Lawrence J. Korb, writing for the Washington Post, February 26, 2008 represents the high water mark of benchmark-meeting, with a paltry four out of eighteen figure. And, courtesy of the Democratic Caucus's Senate Journal, every bit of partial success seems to come with an equally nagging caveat:

  • The so-called de-Baathification law confuses many Iraqis, and, in the opinion of Michael O'Hanlon, "may do more harm than good."
  • The Provincial Powers Law is being oversold as a passed benchmark, but the hurdle will not be cleared until "electoral law must be passed and elections held."
  • Petraeus himself admitted less than a month ago that "Iraqi leaders have failed to take advantage of a reduction in violence to make adequate progress toward resolving their political differences."

    • Of course, obfuscating the Iraqis inability to meet these benchmarks has become something of a hobby for the administration. Back in August of 2007, the Government Accountability Office was so worried that the White House would "water down" the pessimistic conclusions of their report on the benchmarks that the draft report was leaked in advance to the Washington Post.

Apparently, the only job security in the Bush administration is provided by down the line, chapter and verse agreement with every facet of the cover story, whatever it may be this week.

Crocker was asked some pretty pointed questions yesterday, and he didn't seem to have, or be willing to share, the answers. Petraeus must just love Iraq because he never wants to leave. And the cost seems to be a concept that is just brushed aside by these guys.

The only thing worse than this is a commentator on NPR yesterday who thinks then economy can stand this 12 billion per month bill for a few more years without it hurting the country. What a fool.
What does he think is going on right now?

Your Success is delisional. The benchmarks where created because this adminstration constant lieing about "Success" in Iraq. We created benchmarks to claify what success was because the liers in the Bush adminstration simplly claimed success reguardless of the situation. To get around this you simply lie about teh benchmarks in the same way. If have of your claims where true, thaen it would be time to declair "Mission Accomplished" and get out. Yet inspite of this never ending success, condition in Iraq have continued to get worse every year. This year Bush claims that things are getting better and their is success all around when compaired to how bad things where last year. The problem is last year he was saying how good thing have gotton. One of these is bold face lie. Bush either is lieing now that things are better or he lied last year when he said how much better things where. Completly opposite explinations!

Yes all you have to do is say it is done and get another idiot to repeat it and the 2 of you can convince each other. Unfortunaley the Republican policy of lie unitl it is beleived only works on republicans and it does nothing to the actual situation or reality. You people have lied about going into the war , you did not know where the WMD's where, that was a lie. Not a mistake a deliberate factless lie intended to mislead the American people. Then fo rthe next five years you have told us of the great success in Iraq. Each time it has been found that you where lieing, not wrong delibertley lieing, Now this time, this time you really mean it? What a bunch of dopes you people have to be to keep buying into this utter BS.

Lets assume for one second that success in Iraq is up for a debate ( no reasonable person could say that but I will give you the benefit) The republicans have been saying the same thing for 5 years now and they have been wrong every single time. The other side of the argument had not only been 100% dead on accurate in every single assesment of the conditions in Iraq, they have been just as right about the predictions of what was going to happen. Nothing supports this administrations assesments outside of this administration. NOTHING, anywhere by anyone!

Breaking news from CNN: Abu Ayyub al-Masri - a big wheel in al-Qaeda - is now dead. We didn't get him; apparently he died of hepatitis. Maybe Osama bin Laden is dead too, you think? Maybe this is Bush's master plan - to outlive the bad guys until they all contract some fatal disease or just die of natural causes. It worked on Castro more-or-less.

What difference will it make what Petraeus or Crocker say? Both are obliged to either defend the Bush policies or to resign, and neither one is planning on walking the plank. Bush will do what he wants no matter what Congress or the people think. Always has, always will. The Senate has few options, but one is at least to pass Clinton's bill labeling any status of forces agreement with the Iraq government as illegal and void unless ratified by the Senate. This will make it easier on the next President if he/she intends to withdraw.

Hillary-ous! Passing that bill is useless unless Bush signs it, which he won't -- duh!

Crocker and Petraeus, both of whom are no doubt intelligent and capable men, work for GW. What more do you need to know? The pity is they are ruining their credibility and will forever after be known as war apologists and liars. Look at Collin Powell, a fine man who injured himself in the same way.

12 benchmarks met.
February 2008 was a big month.
Recent, yes, but the donkeys and Huffington still shouldn't deny the facts.

"It may be that February 13, 2008 will be remembered as the day when Iraq's political climate began to catch up with its improved security situation--or, more to the point, when Iraqi leaders discovered the key to political compromise and reconciliation."
U.S. Institute of Peace

Furthermore ...

"Instead of making like you know what you're talking about you should wait until Petraeus gives his report.

Then you can distill your comments down to a simple "I don't believe it."

Saves time and has less impact on Huffington's bandwidth.

You seem to think just because some of Bushies followers bleat something it is true. Sorry you Bushies have been wrong consistantly for 5 years. First with the theory of Saddam's threat, WMDs
The idea that we are winning, and now that benchmarks are being met. So far you idiots can't get anything right. Way worse than random guesses.

Quit making yourselves look so stupidly dishonest.

What more would we expect from this pathetic, miserable, myopic, failed administration, an administration that specializes in deceit, and lies and secrecy and cover-ups-- an administration that does not want the government's whistleblowers to receive legal protections from persecution and bureaucratic revenge and threatens a presidential veto should such a law incorporating those protections reach Bush's desk? Yes, of course they have overstated their achievements. They have a new script -- a new narrative -- that they must sell to the American public during this election season. After all, this is the modern version of George Orwell's "1984" isn't it?

It's time for the adults to take over this prcess and stop listening to the childish chicken-hawk worshippers of Sergant Rock. It's obvious from Petreaeus's testimony that every single life and limb lost is a waste and that every day we have any troops or contractors in Iraq is harmful to US interests and helpful to the interests of Iran.

The only thing left to do after listening to Petraeus and the lies of those who lied us into the war and their subsequent predictions for why we must stay in Iraq is just get out.

This is not complicated. If you want to get out -- and I mean all troops and contractors -- you get out. You put together a plan so that our troops are safe while they're rapidly exiting and exit -- now -- and you make the contractors get out too.

It's the only way -- immediate, safe withdrawal.

It's time to stop listening to the childish chicken-hawk worshippers of Sergeant Rock coming up with ever more stupid, dishonest reasons to remain in Iraq and make the pols get our troops and contractors out of there now -- safe and sound. The next Petraeus testimony, in say the beginning of June, should be about how efficient we were in getting all of our troops and contractors out of Iraq.

The term "de-Baathification" did it for me. This government is assisting in the virtual elimination of social castes that have existed in the Middle East for thousands of years. It is not just about a new government; it is about a new social strata. This is interference far beyond the dictates of American policies. Since when do Bush and Cheney have the right to rebuild a society according to their preferences? Where is Congress to stop this unconstitutional, inhumane insanity?

Unfortunately, her point was dismissed with the response "that Cheney got a kiss too".

Iraq's President can freely walk around without fear of attack..and GWBush and Darth Cheney have to sneak-in under the cover of darkness with unprecedented military escort...........

Doesn't matter how you frame it, Iran is the winner. GWBush accomplished for the Iranians what they could not do in eight-year war with Iraq.

Thanks GWBush - mission accomplished!

In the U.S., Bushs actions would be considered treason....so when does impeachment proceeding being? War crimes?

Economic zero of two met
There, two plus one, plus zero, that equals twelve in the Bush world. Crocker has said so and it must be true. That should silence critics and hearten fellow crusaders. What's wrong with those carping Libs, can't they add? That's what makes NCLB arithmetic so special.
