Recognizing that rebate checks ranging from $300 to $1,200 aren't enough to turn around the economy, several lawmakers are proposing a second stimulus bill. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has indicated that she is interested in "increasing unemployment insurance and food stamp payments, as well as putting together a public works spending package." On Sunday, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) brought up expanding and repairing "the deteriorating infrastructure needs of our country."

But yesterday in a meeting at the White House with small business owners, President Bush rejected a second stimulus bill, instead wanting to wait for the stimulus checks to "kick in":

And thirdly, I, you know, I think we ought to, in terms of pro-growth packages, I think we ought to, again I repeat, give this one a chance to kick in. The experts tell me that this pro-growth package is going to add some -- you know, a percent, percent-and-a-half to the economy here in the latter part of this year.

As an American I have never accepted our Moronic leader, your leader. Wall Street and Government experts couldn't even tell the financial, housing and economic bubbles would soon burst. This give away is another charade to appease the electorate with free money. Very little will go to buying trinkets but instead going into savings, fuel and paying off credit cards. Our economy is based upon consumer spending, sorry the consumer is in debt with more write downs in the wind. Credit cards, home lines of credit the list is endless. Your experts are like Bush, without a brain. Oh, and more bank bail out from the money tree, the FED supported by Chinese currency.

It's not going to do anything Mr. President. Most people I have talked to have two plans for their checks: pay off debts or throw it into savings. Unless you are young and single without a care in the world, no one is going to go donate their checks to the gods of capitalism.

Amen, Trinity! I have yet to talk to one person who is planning on jump starting Bush's disastrous economy!

"give this one a chance to kick in"
Yeah, just like that first bloody mary on the morning.

I'm spending my stimulus check on GASOLINE.
Then the oil companies can give the money to Saudi Arabia.

Then the Saudi's will fund more terrorists.

Then Bush and the GOP can spread more fear.

That's right. The only place this "stimulus money" is going is straight into my gas tank as well. I make this comment while oil just hit $111 a barrel in the commodities market, and there was an announcement that supplies are way down. Economic stimulus needs to be focused on fuel prices, as they are spiking grocery costs, the airlines are hurting with fuel costs, and truckers are hanging it all up. If the trucks stop, we're totally screwed. Recession, hell. It would be a depression.

George, will all due respect, I've got a life to lead. I'm not waiting around for your damned trivial handout to arrive. You and your policies are either irrelevant or destructive. Only 9+ months until you're history - and speaking of history, I saw where most historians count you as the worst President ever. Congratulations and try not to do too many more stupid and destructive things before your time's up.

Hi Gary. While you and I and "most historians" count Bush the worst ever, in terms of his family business (war profiteering) he is a phenomenal success.

I cannot believe that this imbecile...this degenerate liar....this sick bastard is stll in the WH.

What if Flight 98 had hit the WH?........Numnutz was reading to the pre schoolers.

The most effective stimulus will kick in, when you and your administration are kicked out..................

I fear that $600 check will have about the same effect as spitting on a forest fire.

Who are those people sitting on either side of Bubble Boy?

They're looking at him like he's an idiot. After awhile, the man looks away as if he can't take it anymore. The woman finally gets a little smile (smirk?) on her face. Is she trying to humor him? Suppressing a laugh?

King George sounded a bit less than at the top of his game in the video. What I took as the most important line of his was this:

"We"re in a rough time right now; I"m confident we"re going to come out of it. "

Well it wan't very long ago that he assured us that the State of our Economy is Strong. What would you make of this statement then? To me it says that he's terrified because the economy is in the toilet and he knows he's responsible and he does not believe that we will come out of it prior to his vacating the White House. If he allows for more domestic spending to help the economy he knows they will fight him in Congress over the war funding. I see him as a wounded animal, trapped, with only bad options. Remembering all his other pResidential decisions, I am fearful for our nation as to what he will do when the checks don't pull us out.

Same pattern as with the Iraq war. Pollyannaish cheerleading long past the point where everyone knew it was a fiasco, then endlessly urging patience. Stay the economic course!

BUSH BOUGHT THE 2000 VOTE WITH $ 600.00 AND NOW IS TRYING TO BUY A GRACEFUL EXIT FROM OFFICE WITH $300.00.

WE HAVE TO PAY THIS MONEY BACK WITH INTEREST. IT IS NO GIFT!!!!!

THIS IS TAX MONEY NEEDED TO RUN THE COUNTRY.

He bought the 2000 election after he was in office? You're an idiot. If you want to pay more in taxes, the IRS will take check or money order. Send as much as you want to them. Are you willing to practice what you preach or are you all talk like Kerry was and Obama is?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:12 PM on 04/08/2008

Bush didn't have to buy his way into office--he got there through fraud. Guess he thought if he threw out a little cash to the masses they would forgive and forget. And he was right!!!!

No you're wrong. He won the election by taking Bill Clinton's state of Arkansas and AlGore's state of Tennessee. Florida was icing on the cake.

I can just see the jubilation of Wall Street when these checks start filtering through the economy. They will be on an artificial high over it all, the markets will spike, the investors will be investing like mad in foreign markets--and George will proclaim that his "pro-growth package" worked. For a day or two, Wall Street will be happy. That's what we're throwing billions after billions out there for anyway, isn't it?

After we pay off some bills with these peanuts and save some companies from having to write off part of our bad debt, we will be back to no jobs, no spending, rising prices. George Bush is a doofus...and so are all others who believe his simpleton logic.

So right, maggiemae. These pitiful little checks will add up to significant further aid for the financiers who got us into this mess in the first place. Would have made a lot more sense to let us deduct our sorry rebates from taxes we have to pay this month, so at least it would be between us and the government, instead of diverted to Wall Street. *grrrrr*

You see, gq, now you're starting to "overthink" the rebate thing and that helps the terrrsts.

Separately, Investor's Business Daily and TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence said their consumer optimism index showed confidence at its weakest since they began tracking it in 2001.

"I think if you are looking at job growth, now negative, and consumer spending is going to slow, to me it's a recession," said Joseph LaVorgna, chief economist at Deutsche Bank in New York.

Compared with February 2007, pending home sales were down 21.4 percent, according to the real estate trade group.

Bush: Give Stimulus Checks "A Chance To Kick In"

GW, the stimulus is not cocaine, but Bush Dollars (.46 cents). There is no kick snowball.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:35 PM on 04/08/2008

$0.46 CENTS? How ?
Nixon devalued the dollar $0.50 cents in 1972.

With this high national debt the dollar can't be worth more than $0.08 cents.

fourex was just counting the efforts of GWB all by his lonesome. If you go all the way back to the creation of the Fed, thge dollar is worth just under $.04, dad.

Senator Chimpy Obama (look at those ears) has no what the capital gains tax even is. But I'll bet you think he's a genius because he Hopes to Change the Future.

Nope - I don't think Obama is a genuis, or that he even looks vaguely like a simian. At least in my case, Obama was a relatively distant 3rd or 4th choice, behind Kucinich, Edwards, and maybe Richardson to be President among the Democrats.

He'll have to do though barring better choices.

I do (however) think that of the three 'viable' choices remaining in this Presidential election, Obama does have the best grasp of reality.

You gotta admit though HopeandChange - Georgie does look like a smirking chimp pretty much any time he goes on stage.
