Drivers beware: Today's high gasoline prices soon may look like a bargain, because they're expected to peak at $3.60 a gallon nationwide in coming months, according to a government report released Tuesday.

In the latest bit of bad news for cash-strapped consumers, the Energy Information Administration predicted that average gasoline prices will shoot up to $3.60 a gallon in June and average $3.54 per gallon over the summer driving period, an increase of 60 cents a gallon over last summer.

It's entirely possible, EIA Administrator Guy Caruso said, that gasoline prices could top $4 a gallon during parts of the summer driving period, defined as April 1 to Sept. 30.

High-price states such as California, where gasoline cost 32 cents per gallon above the national average in March, are pulling up the national average, the EIA said.

Breaking down the average projected prices, the EIA chief said the West Coast was likely to see an average price of $3.78 per gallon of unleaded gasoline over the summer driving period. That's followed by the Rocky Mountain states at $3.53 a gallon, the Midwest and East Coast at $3.50 a gallon and the Gulf Coast states, closer to the production of much domestic oil, with the lowest average price, $3.41 per gallon.

I saw an interesting post re: discounted/free heating oil being provided to America's poor by Venezuela, via Citgo Oil. Meanwhile, George Bush continues to cut heating fuel subsidies from his budget, and has vetoed Congressional attempts to increase his slashed appropriations for these subsidies.

http://www.citgo.com/CommunityInvolvement/HeatingOil.jsp
(article clipped)

The CITGO-Venezuela Heating Oil Program will provide an estimated 112 million gallons of fuel this winter to be distributed in more than 224,000 households and 250 social service providers in 23 states. These totals include the CITGO-Venezuela Tribal Heating Oil Program.

The program, being implemented in partnership with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Citizens Energy Corporation...

In 2005 as energy prices soared in the wake of Hurricane's Katrina and Rita, a group of United States Senators sent a letter to all the major oil companies asking them to share 10% of their record profits with families in need.

Each year, Citizens Energy Corporation asks all of the major oil companies and each OPEC nation to partner with us to help poor people survive tough winters in the face of rising energy costs.

Despite pleas for help from U.S. Senators and Citizens Energy, for the last three years, only CITGO Petroleum has risen to the challenge and worked with Citizens Energy to help the most vulnerable families in our society.

$3.38 as of yesterday here in New Mexico, not much farther to go. Sure would have liked to have been a fly on the wall during Cheney's Secret Energy Meetings.

THE 2000 CAMPAIGN: THE TEXAS GOVERNOR; Bush Would Use Power of Persuasion to Raise Oil Supply

Gov. George W. Bush of Texas said today that if he was president, he would bring down gasoline prices through sheer force of personality, by creating enough political good will with oil-producing nations that they would increase their supply of crude.

''I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply,'' Mr. Bush, the presumptive Republican candidate for president, told reporters here today. ''Use the capital that my administration will earn, with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, and convince them to open up the spigot.''

Implicit in his comments was a criticism of the Clinton administration as failing to take advantage of the good will that the United States built with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf war in 1991. Also implicit was that as the son of the president who built the coalition that drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait, Mr. Bush would be able to establish ties on a personal level that would persuade oil-producing nations that they owed the United States something in return.

He went on to suggest, as he did in answer to other questions, that voters should simply trust him.

Man did we get screwed

Maybe such high prices will finally make all Americans realize the need to make major cuts in their use of gasoline and oil products as well as encourage a major effort for conservation. We may need to recall that WWII idea 'Is this trip necessary?'

One of the reasons that my wife and I moved into a downtown Leon - we are within walking distance of a grocery, several stores, and several parks. I still gotta drive to get to work - but I was doing that anyway and now she can get to work without the commute and my car gets >36mpg.

I already integrate most shopping trips that do require a car into my route back & forth to work, and I know a lot of other people that are doing the same. Hell - my 'conservative' little brother has even ditched his pickup truck (never saw offroad anyway) for a sensible sedan.

There is hope for us all yet, but the change is going to have to come from the bottom up. The Federal Government has long since demonstated that it is useless in these matters.

It's just not possible for most of us to move so close to work we can walk. Or walk to the grocery store or any other store for that matter. Most people do run their errands on the way to or from work if they can. But very few people have the luxury of living close enough to do any shopping without driving, or get to work without driving. I live in a place where public transportation is almost non existent. If you don't drive, you don't go. There's a car for every adult in every household, otherwise you'd never get anywhere.

Your car gets 36 mpgs only on the highway. How many people go to work on the highway? When the engine is cold it gets 4 mpgs until it warms up. Most cars get
ca. 16 mpgs in town. This $ 4 gas will break Ameria's back. We have already cut back
when you look at the government chart and that does not even include the normal
growth.

The "government" has been saying that a lot this year.
Seems like *maybe* the "government" would like to make that happen.

The government has been discussing $4 for 4 years now, that I can remember. The cost of EVERYTHING goes up over time. I don't know why people on here see this as an issue, especially since they all want us to stop driving our cars.

Wow.
This one speaks as if he actually thinks he knows something.
As if the occupation of Iraq has nothing to do with the price of gas.
As if OPEC's manipulation of the price of oil has nothing to do with the price of gas.
It's just that *everything* "goes up".

OMG, how I LOVE conservatives!!!
Everything goes up, so let's ignore RATE!
Everything goes up, so let's ignore MAGNITUDE!

Clinton ran Fed deficts of couple billion, so when Bush runs deficits of $400 billion, WHAT'S THE DIFERENCE?!?!? It is OBVIOUSLY the same thing!!!!

Gotta love these clowns.

sandigoconservative,

I guess you don't have to drive very far do you?

Maybe you make the big bucks now?

Don't you see that the increase in gas prices causes a lot of pain plus inflation?

Guess you don't?

Have a good summer sandi...maybe you won't be going to the shore to often:)

I think we should be totally realistic: prices of $8 to $12 a gallon will occur ... until the entire transportation-based economy of the United States of America grinds to a screeching halt and its entire economy plunges into the blackest Depression that it has ever known ...

... while the rest of the world ... moves on.

Let's be perfectly frank here: the United States of America handed control of its country to a gang of criminals that the rest of the world community is all-too familiar with. (Perhaps the USA got away from two World Wars scot-free, but the French are still cleaning up poison-gas shells from World War One and the "demineurs" will be doing so for the next hundred years.)

The entire world watched as these wannabe heirs to the 1920's British installed a puppet government, handed them a piece of cock-and-bull "legislation" (available, of course, on the Internet...) and said, "sign here." All of the undeveloped oil resources of Iraq would thereby be signed-away ... to companies, not to nations!

Tell me, what do you do in response? A military response will get you vaporized. But ... an economic one?

It's brilliant, and totally effective. And you don't have to fire a shot.

Think about it.

I'm surprised California drivers are so accepting of the high gas prices. They are about 50 cents higher than the national average. Maybe it's time to get rid of the special gasoline blend requirements for California. Amend the federal and state EPA laws. Many California drivers are hurting financially and can no longer afford to be gouged by an uncompetitive gasoline market. The California gasoline market has been effectively walled off from the rest of the country by the special blend requirements.

I live in CA and I'm not happy with it. Here in L.A., you pretty much need a car to survive. We live in the San Gabriel Valley, the boyfriend works in Santa Monica....no trains going from here to there yet, at least not close enough to where he works. I filled up my little bug yesterday and noticed that premium gas was at $4.05. I kid you not, every time I'm at the filling station someone asks me if I will sell them my car! I was able to fill my tank for under $25 which still seems ridiculous for an old vw.

At this rate we will be in depression two maybe three wars by the end of Bush's term and his daddy said he would never amount to anything. Guess dad was wrong, George has turned out to be something.
Low life oil scum sucking, ignoring terrorist attack warning, lying war starting, army breaking, economy bashing, uncaring if people are freezing, vacation taking while cities drowning, oil company supporting, rich tax giving, oil reserve holding, english language destroying, Dancing, singing, joke telling while troops are dying, bigger terrorist than Bin Laden, worst person ever, biggest traitor to hold the highest office...

Now you know why some eat their young to bad Barbra didn't the world would have been a much better place.

Apparently people of influence don't drive much. Truckers do. They could stop this exploitation is one day. A shortage of latee's at Starbuck's will ruffle the right feathers. Empty grocery stores would make world-wide headlines.
