Democratic Presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama shelved their ongoing campaigns and participated in this morning's committee hearings with General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker. Neither ended up contributing much in the way of fireworks, but both, in general, demonstrated an authoritative grasp of the issues at hand, even as they presented their inquiries in different manners. Clinton was measured, yet firm, taking a headlong shot at the two men, while Obama opted to pursue an indirect line of questioning in order to catch Petraeus and Crocker up in their own statements. Both of the candidates proved themselves able to get their heads off the race for the nomination and onto the task at hand, dialing back any election year grandstanding.

And both kept the idea of troop withdrawal at the center of their inquiries. "I think it's time to begin an orderly process of withdrawing our troops," Clinton stated. She went on to ask, "What conditions would have to exist for you to recommend to the President that the current strategy is not working?" Obama concluded: "I continue to believe that the decision to go into Iraq was a massive strategic blunder." He went on to assert the need for a timetable for withdrawal: "I'm trying to get to an end point. If the definition for success is so high...that portends the possibility of us staying twenty or thirty years."

AP has additional details on what each candidate said.

i couldn't finish hilary's. Although Obama pauses and perhaps stutters a bit more, its just more natural. Hilary is reading and its boring me. I guess thats not insulting since this isn't supposed to be entertaining stuff.

Both of them appeared far more Presidential than anything I have seen in long time. They were poised, articulate, informed and thoughtful. Seeing both of them made me wish the campaign hadn't become so personal. America had far more to gain with these two unitied, than divided.

Betterdays- I totally agree with you- except the vitriol that I see on this site and in the press on Hillary aided and abetted by Obama's dismissive and personally degrading comments on the Clinton years and on Bill Clinton himself- from his wife and pastor- give me pause. If Obama should be the nominee, he needs to work real hard and buld a bridge to many, many, life long Democrats who simply are not from the fringe left but were drawn into the party by Bill Clinton with his centrist policies Here is CA, all of my friends and family are in the same boat- if Barack and Michelle Obama are the nominees-and if they do not repent- we will hold our nose and vote for McCain.

What has Obama done to you? How has he offended you in any way. Talk about vitriol. Its laughable. Obama has done his best in the face of the most hateful and deceitful campaign that has been waged ever.

Hillary behavior has been at best embarrassing and at worst destructive. If can not see that you need to switch parties-the sooner the better.

Jacee its crystal clear that IAM4Clinton has no interest in any sort of critical thinking concerning the Clintons. She is no better than the Rethugs (or the exact same considering she has admitted the willingness to vote for a war mongering, senile, Bush part deux). Her purpose here is clearly not to engage in a thoughtful debate because she avoids direct confrontation and chooses instead to zig and zag the questions and swooping in to cherry pick when she sees the opportunity.

IAM4Clinton cheers for Hillary like some crazed sports fanatic. And if she choose to grace us with her presence and comment on this let me just do a little pre-emptive commenting.

Rev. Wright was taken out of context. As I mentioned before he was simply speaking truth to power. I see absolutely nothing wrong with Wright's statements so trying to use that as ammunition is pointless.

Any so called Democrat who would vote for McCain is an idiot.

The maturity, poise, gravitas that Hillary brought is revealing that she is best prepared to get us out of Iraq rather than the cocky and arrogant Barack Obama . Hilklary exudes brilliance, facts, and competence

Thats all you have. Rev Wright. You have summed up Obama based on that one thing. Good lord. Pathetic.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:19 AM on 04/09/2008

If you would listen to Wright's sermon's in context you would realize that the man is simply speaking truth to power. There is nothing wrong with what Wright had to say. Both Obama and Wright have been vetted on this issue. Next!

Except she can't stop lying and her closest advisers are crooks, other than that she's great.

It's easy to call it a "strategic blunder" when you weren't even in office when everyone else voted to authorize the war.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:02 PM on 04/08/2008

A blunder is when you vote to authorize a known madman to go to war and then say you did not know that you were doing.

Exactly- when all he was doing was listening to Jermaie Wright's anti-US vitriol and was a community organizer in registering voters- we have one that brought us many more tangible benefits who is just running for the San Jose City Council.

Hillaru has the poise, gravitas, the knowledge, the capability and clearly is ready to be the Commander in Chief on Day One. I was particularly appalled that one of Huffington Post's left fringe posters had assailed Hillary for shaking Gen.Petraus's hands in greeting. Hillary respects the military and I applaud her for that. For the ilk of Arianna Huffington, Jeriamme Wright , Michelle Obama and all these haters of our blessed land that support Obama- all I can say is that I love my country and I will never vote for Obama until he convinces me that he loves America and is a true democrat who will salute the only 2 term successful President from the Dem party in 2 generations- Bill Clinton.

By the way, it's JEREMIAH Wright. Your freeform spelling of his name was comical at first, but now it's just sad.

You're not the boss of the United States.

What are your qualifications as decider of who's patriotic and who is not?

This is a conversative tactic used to kidnap and hold patrotism hostage . That dog ain't gonna hunt . . . no more.

You mean the 20 seconds you heard on a loop. 20 seconds.-wow. Looks like Obama came out of that 20 seconds just fine.

Hillary on the other hand has spent decades lying and hanging out with crooks and fellow liars-like her immoral husband. There isn't any fake platitude you can hurl that will change that fact.

Perhaps they have attention deficit disorder and can't watch anything longer than a 20 second soundbite.

Crocker didn't have a clue about what Obama was asking in the last question, even when the question was repeated with kindergarten footnotes.

Crocker looks like a drunk watching the clock, clicking down the seconds to that 6pm cocktail.

I'm an avid Obama supporter, but there is one thing I want to hear him say that he hasn't mentioned. The immediate withdraw of all privatized forces such as Blackwater. I want those fuckers out of there immediately. No "one brigade a month" with those red neck MF's. Get them the hell out of there immediately. They are demoralizing both our country and our troops efforts. Privatized warfare is not what this country is about and I want to hear some strong opinions in opposition to it soon from both Democrats!

I have no problem putting our countries best interests in the hands of Hillary Clinton. She
displays incredible knowledge of the issues with Iraq, a solemn determination to do what
it takes to resolve the situation in the best way possible and bring our people home.
I am voting for Hillary Clinton. She is going to be an amazing President.

Obama's smear tactics are disgusting- Sen. Jay Rockefeller, his surrogate, today accussed John McCain of only knowing how to bomb from 35,000 feet and that he has no clue of living people. Obama has refused to apologize.

Obama was looking for more than American Presidential Idol points today and his questions were a masterstroke of strategy. Those shallowly focusing on Obama"s style of questioning fail to see one thing; He has bound the military and to some extent the administration with the answers they gave.

1. We cannot define success as the elimination of Al Qaeda in Iraq
2. We cannot define success as t
