Obama Event Coordinator: Get Me More White People

The Carnegie Mellon University student newspaper The Tartan reports on preparations for a Michelle Obama appearance at the school:

While the crowd was indeed diverse, some students at the event questioned the practices of Mrs. Obama's event coordinators, who handpicked the crowd sitting behind Mrs. Obama. The Tartan's correspondents observed one event coordinator say to another, "Get me more white people, we need more white people." To an Asian girl sitting in the back row, one coordinator said, "We're moving you, sorry. It's going to look so pretty, though."

"I didn't know they would say, 'We need a white person here,' " said attendee and senior psychology major Shayna Watson, who sat in the crowd behind Mrs. Obama. "I understood they would want a show of diversity, but to pick up people and to reseat them, I didn't know it would be so outright."

Ben Smith of The Politico observes:

I'm not sure there's any real reason for outrage here; every campaign, at least implicitly, includes race in the staging of events like this -- even a campaign whose supporters chant "race doesn't matter." But they don't usually get caught doing it this explicitly.

And (if you didn't pick it up from the bowling) it does give you a sense of the community Obama's trying to reach in Pennsylvania: whitefolks.

That's pretty low. If McCain said "we need more black people......." well you know the public reaction would have been different (outrage, and rightfully so). This speaks volumes about the character of Barack and Michelle both, judging by the character of those they choose to work their campaign.

The should have given out tickets to Dave Matthews Concerts or maybe Starbucks Gift Cards....
That would'a got dem crackers running!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:34 PM on 04/11/2008

crackers?! That would not have made it past moderation if the N word was used. Says volumes for the double-standards of HP.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:03 PM on 04/11/2008

Give me a break. Are real story lines too hard to find? We got death in the Middle East, a crazy man and war criminals in the White House, a crazy old fart running for President who wants to stay in Iraq so oil companies can loot it, education system that produce dummies, unregulated poison food and items being shipped in so souless people can make a profit and you talk about rearranging the deck chairs. How great is it that someone wants to promote diversity and says it out loud. Give me a fricking break! Do a real job for a change..use your brain.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:44 PM on 04/10/2008

That's the problem, no brain in Obama campaign.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:04 PM on 04/11/2008

Sparkandy, you need to learn history. Racism is a very different mechanism depending on which direction it's going in. At least on this continent.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:54 PM on 04/10/2008

STOP SAYING 'REVERSE RACISM'! There's NO SUCH THING. Racism is racism is racism is racism, no matter who the perpetrator and no matter who the victim. A black person who hates Mexicans is a racist. A white who hates Asians is a racist. A Mexican who hates whites is racist. An Asian who hates blacks is a racist. PERIOD.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:03 AM on 04/10/2008

Now that Obama is Black enough, he wants to be White enough too. He is trying to buy 80% of the White vote with all his money. He already has 80% of the Black vote with just his skin color.

Too bad he didn't get more of his Mother's genes and a built in switch to change like he does the crowds.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:09 PM on 04/09/2008

It looks like even the black voters want his money...

foreffect: What are Clinton and McCain trying to buy with all of their money? You obviously have some serious race issues, based on your own disrespectful rant. Sen. Obama doesn't need your vote. Please bless some other candidate.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:15 AM on 04/10/2008

Why is this news? It's not BO, it's not even MO...it's some unknown functionary at an unspecified level within the hierarchy.

Suppose their caterer had said something racist. Suppose it had been one of the valets? Does Mr. Obama have to project a race-free field within a mile of he and all his supporters?

Honestly, there are issues with the man, as with all the candidates. Wright, I can understand the consternation. But it seems that some of this is becoming so incredibly peripheral. It demands a standard that makes a mockery of his views, by taking them to absurd extremes, then claiming he somehow falls short.

He's claimed to be different and less divisive, but I don't believe he ever claimed to be, you know, actual Jesus.

And while we're discussing white people...

Who is playing the race card now? Isn't America whatever color comes to the table. Or does Mrs. Obama want to manipulate the senses of America?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:56 PM on 04/09/2008

Obama and his campaign have done nothing past Clinton campaigns, and id expect this one is no different, havent.. Follow the link below and watch this interesting piece straight from the Clintons own mouth.

From Brasschecktv, a piece called "Spin"

I agree with the photographer. I was just trying to add some "color' to the photo.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:14 PM on 04/09/2008

Michelle Obama said today in her speech that Barack was an accessory. Guess who wears the pants in their household. We may end up with a "First Black Female President" instead.

I personally want a 1990's, (Bill clinton like), Democratic administration instead of a 1980's, (Jimmy Carter like), Democratic administration. The "First Black President" or the "First Woman President" are not my decision making criteria for me.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:10 PM on 04/09/2008

foreffect: Mrs. Obama also followed up with, "Just joking." Did you forget that part??

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:17 AM on 04/10/2008

SO??

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:45 PM on 04/09/2008

imagine if Geraldine Ferraro tried to put a group of black supporters behind Sen. Clinton.
MSNBC would be right on it and so maybe others.
seems like reverse racism?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:39 PM on 04/09/2008

You haven't seen "reverse racism" until you see how the republicans scramble to find token minorities to try to add flavor to their political events. Watch when the cameras actually pan the audience. Usually, the two or three people of color are sitting right up front behind the speakers. Not too many to be seen elsewhere.

However, I will concede that it is a trick used by many political groups. I wouldn't crow too soon, because we just may see proof of this same shenanigan by other candidates and their campaigns. It's kinda like trying to regroup the audience to make the turnout look larger than it actually is.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:25 AM on 04/10/2008

simmah dauwn naw. One dumbass coordinator does not make an entire campaign racist.

next...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:07 PM on 04/09/2008

So typical of America.Reminds me of a little Mexican girl I met at a school I was visiting. We were talking and she asked , very earnestly"Why are white people so popular?" I was speechless.
Why, indeed?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:40 PM on 04/09/2008

Um, if this were Clinton or McCain what would Obama supporters be saying?? You must be kidding, they would have to go out and hire a Black to stand behind McBush and for Billary I think her and Bill have shown their true colors when it comes to race. So they wanted a balanced audiance, no different then Hillary standing in front of a bunch of Union guys or McBush standing in front of a bunch of Military men and women. All campaigns use their support people to set up before the speaker gets there.
So what, that's called politics.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:24 PM on 04/09/2008

Have you been this angry and hateful all your life?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:57 PM on 04/09/2008

It is NOT true that all campaigns arrange their audiences!! I have been to many rallies/fundraisers for Hillary Clinton and NEVER HAVE I SEEN ANYONE TOLD WHERE TO SIT!!!! The Obamas are two of the most PHONY PEOPLE on the face of the earth!!! God forbid these two get in the White House!!! It will never happen, though. He will NEVER win the general election!!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:24 PM on 04/09/2008

If you honestly believe that, you're dreaming! Of course the campaigns don't 'arrange' the background crowds at all events, but televised coverage, photo ops, desired constituent message, etc. all factor into these sometimes highly orchestrated 'accidents' of who sits where.

You evidently missed those rallies Hillary had a while back when she was trying to drum up more of the 'Youth' vote. You couldn't find anyone older than 25 behind her at times!

It's called 'Politics', and if it's too "phoney" for you, I suggest getting a new hobby.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:10 PM on 04/09/2008

So, the preacher who is NOT about race and ALL about being a UNITER, is now USING race as a way to conquer and DIVIDE audiences to make the stage "look pretty." What a joke. What's an even bigger joke is that people would actually go to see Michelle Obama speak, as if she has anything important or non-racist to say...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:53 PM on 04/09/2008

This has gotten blown out of proportion. As I've heard it, some one wanted a little something to nosh on, and the asked for "more crackers."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:16 PM on 04/09/2008

That's funny! and very naughty!

While we're being petty, I'd like to suggest we get Michelle out of those ridiculous Kennedy outfits. For crying out loud, let the woman dress normally. She looks so uncomfortable in those pert suits.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:13 PM on 04/09/2008

That's deliberate, meant to evoke that spirit of the Camelot era. All staged for a reason. She's NO Jackie O!!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:55 PM on 04/09/2008

Good one.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:41 PM on 04/09/2008

I can hardly believe my eyes.....A post racial candidate, concerned about the appearance of Diversity?? Did they make sure that Mrs. O's background crowd's racial distribution matched the last census for that area of the state????

This simply underscores the post-racial phoniness that became apparent in the wake of the Rev. Wright "revalation". Although Senator Obama may not be so radical himself, it seems many of thise he chooses to associate with(including Michelle) have the reverse racisit chip on their shoulders-even if some hide it better than others. At the very least, his campaign has been outed as hyper race concious posers.

I thought that post-racial referred to the kind of color-blindness Dr. King spole of; where people are judged by their charachter and actions. In light of this episode, Rev Wright, Tony Rezco, the Selma conception, and the kennedy passage for his father (and anything else left to come out) I guess we can judge Senator Obama's integrity for what it really is.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:24 PM on 04/09/2008

Who was the event coordinator? Rev. Wright?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:20 PM on 04/09/2008

Pathetic apologists for Obama's race-centric campaign can be counted on to try and spin this situation. The reason why Obama's campaign needs to show a more pluralistic audience is the same reason that millions of non-blacks, who have NOT forgotten Obama's associations with the forces of division will not vote for him.

I have been ashamed of his campaign ever since his campaign memo that labeled the Clintons racists. Unforgivable!

This guy (and let's not forget Shelly) has done more to divide our party than anyone else in history. Some uniter.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:56 PM on 04/09/2008

And you can be relied on to spin it in the opposite direction.

Your point is what, Piehole?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:21 PM on 04/09/2008

And another thing -- if this were HIllary, people would be tut-tutting, about how poorly her campaign is being run, that we would see the sausage being made (so to speak).

So hey -- this points out how badly Obama's campaign is being run!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:31 PM on 04/09/2008

This is funny! It's a rare time when we can see behind the curtain, and see the wizard pulling the strings. I'm not saying it doesn't happen everywhere; it does, without question.

But it's really, really amusing that Obama's campaign had to bring in white people to appeal to ... white people.

I am a former casting director and this is Casting 101, not only for staged political events, but for television commercials, shows and for movies.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:02 PM on 04/09/2008

You are correct. The sad part of this whole thing is that people, young people in particular, don't seem to realize the amount of manipulation and staging that goes on in the Obama campaign. In all campaigns for that matter.

So Obama takes the american flag pin off his lapel because patriotism is not expressed with jewelry to appeal to those who agree. But then when he gives his race speech in Phil stands in frong of a slew of American flags.

The problem for the Obama campaign if there is going to be one is that part of the theme of his campaign is that he is a different politician, one that is honest and doesn't engage in this type of manipulation. It's the problem for republican and law and order politicians, who then get caught with their pants down. Barney Frank was able to outlive his guy-friend scandal because he had never held himself up as a paragon of family values. If yo
