Update: ABC News has gotten its hands on internal Wal-Mart videos that paint a rather unflattering picture of the company and how it treats women. The Wall Street Journal and Wal-Mart Watch have also dug into the issue. ABC reports:

From the tough anti-union talk to the wilder side of men in drag, videos of Wal-Mart corporate meetings are being sold to willing buyers, and the corporate behemoth is not happy about it.

The videos, thousands of them spanning three decades, are in the library of a production company in Lenexa, Kan. Flagler Productions Inc. was hired on a handshake deal by Wal-Mart in the 1970s to produce and film corporate sales meetings and other company events.

Watch two of the videos below. The first video shows a meeting of Wal-Mart employees prancing around a stage in drag. The second video features Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton during a 1987 shareholders meeting. "We know we haven't gotten as far as we'd like to be advancing women in our company. But we're very conscious of it," he says.

More on the videos....
According to the Wall Street Journal, a video treasure trove of Wal-Mart execs caught in unguarded moments is being floated around for sale by Flagler Productions. The Kansas-based company was originally hired by the corporate giant in the 1970s to film corporate sales meetings and other company functions. However....

In recent months, Flagler has opened its trove of some 15,000 Wal-Mart tapes to the outside world, with an eye toward selling clips. The material is proving irresistible to everyone from business historians and documentary filmmakers to plaintiffs lawyers and union organizers.

Among the revealing moments: A former executive vice president and board member challenges store managers in 2004 to continue his work opposing unionization. Male managers in drag lead thousands of co-workers in the company's corporate cheer. In another meeting, managers mock foolish or dangerous use of a product sold in its stores. In 1991, founder Sam Walton describes Hillary Clinton, then a Wal-Mart director, as "one of us."

The WSJ adds that ironically:

The video library might have remained under wraps if a new Wal-Mart executive hadn't decided to hire another company to stage a musical production for its 2006 stockholders' meeting. The decision sharply curbed Flagler's role. Wal-Mart dumped Flagler altogether as a producer in late 2006, nine days after Mr. Flagler sold the company for an undisclosed sum to two employees, Mary Lyn Villanueva and Gregory A. Pierce. The current owners say Wal-Mart accounted for more than 90% of Flagler's revenue. The company's bank called in a loan, and the pair dismissed their 16-person work force, Ms. Villanueva says. Flagler offered to sell the whole video archive to Wal-Mart for several million dollars, Ms. Villanueva says, although she won't disclose the exact price. Wal-Mart countered with an offer of $500,000, arguing the footage wouldn't be of interest elsewhere, the two owners say.

Naturally, anti-Wal-Mart blogs -- such as Wal-Mart Watch and Wake-Up Wal-Mart -- have been having a field day with the information, posting links to the WSJ video and as well as highlighting parody videos using the footage, such as the following:

Why are we shocked at Walmart OR at Hillary Clinton?

Seems like all of this has been fairly evident from the beginning!

Oh please...no respectable drag queen would ever prance around in Walmart merchandise. I wonder what the good Walmart faithful in the heart of the bible belt are thinking of this footage.

nothing........because they can not afford to shop elsewhere. What do you do. the only thing you can.....shop at the cheapest place. It's the economy stupid!

And it does not help when Walmart has put everyone else out of business...they are the only game in town in many rural communities...

Give Hillary a break about Wal-mart. I boycott the store and would be happy if they were eradicated from the face of the earth, and I could NEVER approve of anyone supporting them now. BUT:

Wal-mart was not always the horrible amoral institution it has become in the hands of Sam Walton's heirs. As a prominent attorney in Arkansas it was a duh! for Hillary to be asked to serve on the board.

If she supports them now, though, I'll be the first to attack her.

I agree with you eej, sam would never allow something like this to happen, Wal-Mart was once a good place, but I haven't shopped there in 10 years, you can never find help when you need it. Well said.

You have a point, except, If you look at Hillary's work for Wal*Mart as legal counsel and share holder, Wal*Mart was extremely aggressive during her tenure against unions. She profited from that, as a share holder. Then we fast forward to the Clinton administration. First NAFTA, then Bill giving China favored nation trading status. Now we have her 2 top guys in her campaign, Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson, working on behalf of the Colombian government for the free trade with them and Bill's long established relationship with the Colombians, also working on behalf of free trade. He was paid $800,000. (What does the Colombian government expect in return for their generosity?) It is no coincidence. Hillary and Bill have always been anti-union and for free trade, no matter what she tells the little people on her way to the White House. A vote for Hillary is a vote for more jobs lost. Period.

not just lost jobs, but incredibly abusive employment and environmental policies in the "third world" countries which are also victimized by NAFTA. If there were living wage, fair labor and clean environmental requirements in NAFTA, the entire world would be a better place - restricting trade only to those who are fair and environmentally sound - then may the best product win! But no, as with our slave class of immigrants here in the US, the whole NAFTA thing was about exploitation, destruction, and outsourcing America's "dirty work," while feeding its basest instincts for overconsumption, which rapes humanity and the planet.

sorry to sugar coat it!

I'm so happy I boycott them and don't have to deal with the parking lots, the plastic bags, the gross stores, the crappy merchandise, the nasty food, the ridiculous advertising, the stupid smiley faces... and that I don't have to feel conflicted when I see articles such as this one.

Boycott the bastards. Anything you cannot buy elsewhere, you don't need.

I haven't stepped foot in a Wal*Mart in over 4 years. I work too damn hard for my money to see it support China!

The Wall Mart -- China complaint is laughable. China is underwriting our immense national deficit. Our economy would tank without them. As a retiree I can't afford to pay a higher price just to make a statement like those who would boycott Wall-Mart. Besides many items made in USA are significantly cheaper at Wall-Mart than at Sears, Penneys, etc. It's right out of Economics 101 to find the lowest price. If you want to make a statement against Wall-Mart picket their parking lot, but don't tell me where to shop. Drug prices alone make it worth my while shopping there.

Unbelievable. Oh!!! The chickens have come home to roost. The lawsuits they have. "Hillary is one of us." Unbelievable. This is almost as good as the DNA Nobel prize winner, Watson, stating that blacks are not as smart as whites and then finding out that he is black.

Hill' gets a lifetime supply of free pant-suits for services rendered to Wallyworld.... inflicting daily punishment on our eyeballs. Our "government" is sending us all $600...... so we can go buy more cheap Chinese plastic crap from Wally.... and drive up the deficit simultaneously. Funny old world isn't it.

I think Walmart's policy towards women employees, Hillary's past association with Walmart and Walmart execs in drag are three different issues.

There is nothing wrong with drag and most of us have gotten past the "drag is misogynst" bleetings of the pre-queer 1970's.

Drag is a fabulous thing.

However these men ARE guilty of bad drag- THAT'S their crime in these videos in my gay eyes.

They are like the frat boy jocks doing the powder puff football thing.

Gross.

You KNOW they all dress like that privately too.

Boycott Walmart. I never shop there.

Watch the documentary "Walmart: the High Cost of Low Price," if you want to see how evil this corporation really is.

You do get what you pay for. Wal-Mart merchandise is inferior.

Read about "B" stock when it comes to electronics.

Google up "Wal-Mart Snapper lawnmower"

Just because an item has the same brand name - even the same model number - at Wal-Mart does not guarantee it is the same product. Not even close.

Wal-Mart suckers are getting ripped off, and deservedly so. Ignorance has a price.

Was this taken while Hillary Clinton was on the board? If so she's got some more explaining to do. Institutionalized sexism while she was a board member would be a very interesting point on which to see her spin.

Regardless of the alturistic motives of any human, those who inherit the mantel, (other humans) will corrupt all. Yet many out there think their God is adoring, caring, enhancing all that humans stand for. Right. God loves wars, religious killings, bigotry, nationalism and the list is endless for what is.
A heaven awaits all?????

Hey, for some reason the mighty HuffPo has neglected to mention that Proud Mary served on TreeHouse Foods Board of Directors; you know TreeHouse, right? One of Wal-Mart's biggest suppliers?

And of course Proud Mary was "named" to the TreeHouse Board immediately after Obuma was elected to the Senate. A mere coincidence, I'm sure.

Proud Mary?

too uppity for you, Master John....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:57 PM on 04/09/2008

What EXACTLY does a supplier to Wal-mart have to do with anything? What, now I can't use Crest? or any other product that Wal-Mart sells? If that's the case then there really isn't much in the United States that I CAN use. You really have issues.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:21 PM on 04/09/2008

Issues? Not me.

I simply understand that without vendors, such as TreeHouse, Wal-Mart would not exist.

Proud Mary contributed to Wal-Mart's success, for which I am grateful as my family shops there frequently.

Obama's "anti" Wal-Mart rhetoric is as vapid as is the rest of his nonsense.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:28 PM on 04/09/2008

First, Obama doesn't have an "anti-Wal*Mart rhetoric". Never has.
Second, Wal*Mart exists as the giant is today because of Bill Clinton, NAFTA and giving China Favored Nation Trading Status.

Who the hell is "Proud Mary"? Why don't you put your posts into proper context when you write? And what does this have to do with Walmart?

It's classic "Dog-whistle politics", which we should prepare ourselves to see a lot of this season.

Which is political campaigning or speechmaking using coded language, which appears to mean one thing to the general population but which has a different or more specific meaning for a targeted subgroup of the audience.

Proud Mary is a cute way to signal that Michelle is an "uppity black woman".

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:07 PM on 04/09/2008

He means Michelle Obama. She has a Wal-Mart connection, too. I've never heard her referred to as Proud Mary, however.

Hmm ...

Tina Turner sang "Proud Mary."
Tina Turner is a black woman.
Michelle Obama is also a black woman.
Therefore, Michelle Obama = "Proud Mary." (?)

Strange ....

Sam Walton describes Hillary Clinton as "one of us". That's what a lot of us have been saying all along. She is a corporatist, Lieberman-clone, faux-Democrat.

On a scale of one to ten, with 1 being McCain/Bush and 10 being Paul Wellstone - Hillary is probably around a 1.5. Obama would fall at maybe a 4... nothing to get too excited about, but good enough to get behind. There is no rational reason for any Democrat to support Hillary, which is why much of her support comes from Republicans.

Hey, that's Hillary's favorite place.

I'm waiting for her to spin this as "evidence of hwo diffifult it is for women to break through that glass ceiling and why a woman president is so important to so many people. it's not easy. Look at what I had to put up with while serving on that board." Victim to the day she lies, er um, dies.

Hillary apparently made little to no progress in her position there. Otherwise we would not still be hearing about how rotten women are treated by wal-mart today, over a dozen years since she worked there.
