A new report by the Pew Research Center highlights a paradox of the American middle class: Most people, no matter where they fall on the economic spectrum, believe they are part of it.

Just ask David Schutt and Elizabeth Gaylord of Berwyn, whose household income is well above the village median, last measured at $43,833. A computer technician and artist, respectively, they enjoy ski trips to Colorado and Wisconsin but are putting off repairing their roof because they are worried about their economic future.

"It's the old story of the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and some middle class scramble up to the top," said Schutt, 50. "But those who don't, they generally find themselves on the down slide."

The thing that republicans hated most about Clinton was that the prosperity was shared by many Americans. Even though the rich made huge piles of dough under Bill, they were pissed that everyone else was making money too. Bush fixed that. That's why he still has over 80% approval with republicans.

John Edwards was wrong about there being "two Americas". Barry Rithholtz (thebigpicture.com) has pointed out that there are really three Americas: "Have Nots", "Haves", and "Have Mores". Most of us are (to one degree or another) in the "Haves" group, which covers a wide swath of Americans.
Under GWB, the Have Nots and the Haves are losing ground at an alarming rate and the Have Mores have been gaining.

the issue of identity is an interesting one. class consciousness is important in not getting fooled. americans live in a dream bubble, and this is why they have deteriorating healthcare, decreased pension value and increased cost of living in general. will they ever wake up? will they ever know themselves? if not, they can go to las vegas or atlantic city and continue living that big lie (someday I'll be rich, rich, you hear? and then i'll be better than everyone else, and i won't have any more problems).

As someone used to say, if you need your next paycheck, you're working class.

That makes sense to a degree. However, I have seen hard working class people save enough to create some kind of egg nest. Those egg nests are fast disappearing under these hard economic times..

The middle class is obsolete. It is a hard fact. Globalization, cheap labor, and economic cannibalism will be the end ot it.

The cycle of history continues.

We are being faced with the admittance that those of our Revolutionary War might well have fought and died in vain. Those who stood in first picket lines and were murdered....have died in vain. We the People are losing all that we have fought for through history.

Shall we hang our heads in shame? Shall we take the blame that we were the irresponsible ones that never should have had credit in the first place. Shall we swallow that drivle?

Shall we step to the plate and try to honor our ancestors and ourselves?

It is time for change.

In America, class = money. So rich people are "high class" or "first class". When Americans say "middle class" they really mean middle income. Poor people of course are "the lower classes" although it has become politically correct to refer to them as "disadvantaged". The rest of the world understands class divisions to include the ruling class, the middle class and the working class. The middle class is defined by its usefulness to the ruling class. Educated people, professional people, are rewarded for their usefulness to the rulers. So when you ask Americans to identify themselves by class, they know they are not rich (or don't want to admit they are rich) and of course nobody wants to be "low class" so we ALL claim the middle. It's actually quite unfortunate that Americans are ignorant of class. That ignorance is the root of Americans political stupidity. If you have no idea whatsoever of the tension between the interests of the ruling class and the interests of the working class, then you are quite at sea as a citizen and a voter.

The smart ones know they are por and accept it.
Blowing smoke up you own skirts is silly and will lead to stupid decisions with money.

True middle class is around $200,000 ir more. The government removes the top 10% to 15% of the high income people to get down to the $50,000.00 mark. It also serves to stop people from demanding raises.

Bring in more illegals I am makeing too much money. Bring them in to drive my wages down.
50 million more should do it Bush!

i once heard lou dobbs reject someone's point of view because the person used the term "working class" which he felt was associated with socialism and therefore harmful to the brand of populism to which he espouses. middle class means almost nothing. go to france, lou dobbs and get in touch with the terms that rose out of the first, significant class revolution. or just go to france (as van dyke parks put it).

I have some friends who are upper-middle who hate the term "working class" since, according to them "it makes it seem like WE don't work...we have money because WE work." Personally I like the term "working poor" better. It says that yes, they're working, but they're also not doing so well as a result.

Neoliberalism comes to America ...

The corporations voracious appetite for profits is now aimed at the developed countries. Threatening workers with out sourcing, out sourcing, privatization of public assets and the takeover of the governance to assert tax avoidance, lower taxes, subsidies and market monopolization.

Welcome to America, now colonized by the corporations.

There's nothing liberal about corporate fascism. Pro-corporate leanings have ALWAYS been the province of conservatives. So, stop trying to demonize the wrong people by your "neoliberalism" misnomer.

It IS however neoconservatives who get along with this philosophy quite well -- blaming economic woes on the government due to regulation and taxes. Well we haven't had much regulation in the last 7 years and the taxes were lowered. Look where we are.

Your point is correct -- just your term is all wrong. There's already a word for it -- NEOCON.

In an older sense of the word, "liberal" often used to mean a believer in right-wing economics. In Australia, the "liberal" party is the conservative party! The previous writer is correct in using "neoliberalism" in this sense, but it's confusing to contemporary Americans.

In a precipitiously declining country, the only gainers are our trading competitors and our despicable insider leaders. Borrowing ourselves into bankruptcy, then intending to pay it back with degraded currency is a winner for our creditors as the average American becomes destitute.... at the mercy of unwonted plutocracy and foreign ownership.

Supposedly GDP went up from 2002 until 2007 yet real wages for most are declining while food, fuel, health care and tuition skyrocket.

Around the world GDP is supposedly going up yet populations are suffering ...why? All the gains are going to the top 1%, and to the corporations leaving a smaller and smaller pie for everyone else.

It is called neoliberalism. Now we know what people in the third world feel like.

You are correct. It is neoliberalism. And neoliberalism is a highly evolved class warfare. Neoliberalism's most successful tactic is "free trade agreements". It is very important to defeat the "free trade" deal with Colombia.

You are calling NEO CONSERVATIVES -- NEO LIBERIALS.

I don't think you know what liberials stand for.

Use no more than you need.
Treat the natural resources of the country with respect because they BELONG TO ALL AMERICANS.
Treat your fellow man with repspect and help your friends, neighbors, and community.
Find ways of doing business that make great use of all natural resouces so none are wasted.
Taxes and Regulations should be placed on natural resources so that anyone wanting to use them will really need ot be efficent in their process so as not to waste the resources.
The taxes will also go toward research and devolpment of other resources so the people are not robbed of their property..
Clean water and Air are necessary for existence. Get them clean and keep them clean. If your business uses water the any discharge must be contained and the waste reclaimed for use by other industry not comtaminating stream, lake and waterways to the ocean.
These are a few of the Liberials views. A far cry from what you presenting.,
Tell Rush he lied to you.

You can't identify "middle class" by an income determination. In much of California, NY, MA etc., a (low) six-figure income could barely get you by, where in much less expensive areas you would be living like a king. It is better described by... after you pay your mortgage, taxes and insurance, what's left? If you lose your job, how much time do you have until you lose everything else. The numbers are meaningless.
