ABC has two stories on President Bush's polar behavior over the last two days. On Tuesday, the President had tears streaming down his face during a ceremony for a Navy Seal who had given his life in Iraq. Today, in a rare moment of honesty about his troubled past, he brought up the drinking problem he struggled with as a younger man.

Here's the report on Bush crying...

ABC's Jennifer Duck reports: Clearly choked up, and at times wiping away his own tears, President Bush awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously at the White House Tueday to Navy SEAL Petty Officer Michael Monsoor, who was killed in Iraq in September of 2006 when he fell on a grenade to save comrades during fighting in Ramadi.

Monsoor was the fourth service member to receive the nation's highest award for valor in the 6 1/2 years of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Bush awarded the medal in the White House's East Room Tuesday to Monsoor's parents.

Here's the report on Bush discussing his drinking problem...

ABC News' Jennifer Duck Reports: For the third time in recent months, President George W. Bush publicly reflected on his past drinking problem.

"I quit drinking -- and it wasn't because of a government program. It required a little more powerful force than a government program in my case," Bush said after signing the "Second Chance Act" -- a government program to aide recovered substance abusers -- into law.

The law is a prisoner re-entry program that helps convicted felons transition back into society and provides additional federal funding to reduce prison populations by creating job training programs, along with substance abuse and family stability support.

It has always amazed me that Bush was given a free ride by the media on the so-called pretzel-choking episode. Of course he was drunk and stumbled and bruised his face. NO ONE...let me repeat this for those who need to hear it again...NO ONE chokes on a pretzel seriously enough to lose consciousness who doesn't have to be resuscitated. If you lose consciousness from choking it is because your brain is dangerously deprived of oxygen. This whole story is hogwash and I do not believe that Bush stopped drinking prior to taking office.

Cloudwatcher, [Part One]
Regarding your comment: "No teacher!!! I am in the 6th grade! And I can read, too. Even big fairytale books like Reagan's. Teacher? Was Reagan really the second coming, and we missed it? Shucks."

Since you're a big sixth grader, let me explain why I brought Reagan into the discussion. It was to point out that history, by which one means succeeding generations, may look at Bush's administration differently than this present one does -- just as Reagan's administration looks different today -- because we know things that Reagan could not know about the outcomes of events he influenced. To a mature person this just means that time brings a greater measure of objectivity. To immature Huff Po correspondents, however, it seems a threatening commentary.
Interestingly enough, this whole tempest takes place in an election year. We are only a few short months away from selecting a new president and yet people cannot get enough of whinning and vengence talk at this forum.

Cloudwatcher [Part 2]
When I argued that one should read Reagan's book, I was not saying that it was the last word on his adminstration. My point was more that it was a first word, a first-person account that needs to be put together into a larger mosaic of points of view.
Quite apart from politics, though, Reagan's book is fascinating in many ways: chief among them, in my opinion, is the way he mythologizes his life. He saw his life as having a shape and purpose. He notes how small events that occurred early in his life led him toward more significant choices later. He believed his own life could have meaning, and it led him to look at others' lives as similarly holding meaning. Perhaps for that reason, even when he was president, he sometimes wrote letters to ordinary citizens to explain some of his actions. It's something touching and amazing about him as a man. Perhaps it helped him to formulate his ideas, perhaps it was a way of holding himself accountable, perhaps it reconnected him to his own earlier life before he became famous. In any case, the book is very uplifting. It is informative. It is certainly harmless to read. That you cannot be bothered doesn't argue your superiority as you seem to think. It merely shows that you would condemn a man without hearing the man's own defense.

Anybody else notice that the act Bush signed will just send more convicts to halfway houses instead of overcrowding prisons, thus changing the population in recovery centers from people who really want to recover over to people who really want to get out of prison? I've noticed this around the country. The institutions that once helped alcoholics and addicts are becoming babysitters for the parole officers.

My honest feeling is that Bush is not only in sorrow for this hero. I think it is believable to think that he realizes the mistake he made. Bush understands that he threw that brave soldier onto the grenade.

Mr. Bush is not an evil man...but his downfall was that he gave his own Pride greater power than his sorrow. President Bush failed as President because he is incapable of shouldering his own responsibility - he is not willing to throw himself on the mistake he himself created....

The President killed this man, that is why he cried.

Mr. Bush is simply morally banckrupt! He doesn't have a conscience enough to feel anything but greed.

I don't want to get into the whole good vs evil thing. Bush is complicit in war crimes. He is complicit in invading a soverign nation, with no provocation or direct threat. He lies constantly, he pretends to have such deep love and respect for our troops, yet thinks nothing of making them do multiple combat tours in Iraq.
The soldiers are all but forgotten after their discharge. Bush only loves them if they are able to fight. Once wonded, forget about it.

Please explain how Iraq was a "soverign nation"? Exactly how does a dictator gain legitimacy? As to their being no provocation? Do you mean that there was no provocation the week prior to the US invasion? You certainly are incorrect in assuming there was no "provocation" during Saddam's tenure.
Isn't it interesting that in order to criticize Bush one has to make this false argument about Iraq under Saddam's rule.

How about stop throwing people in jail for smoking a joint!!!

This is just total madness... we have over 2million people locked up in America. Most of them are in there for drug offenses....

You can get over an addiction, but you can never get over a conviction.

Where were the tears when bush made jokes about not finding WMD, the stated reason for the invasion in the first place. He made light of their sacrifice, in front of a room full of people, and cameras. The man is despicable, and deserves not one iota of pity.

Instead of crying why don't you get your a$$ to a few funerals and comfort the families. You were not crying for this hero of a soldier, you were crying because no one likes you and you are the worst president in the history of America........learn to live with it. That will be your punishment for what you have done. Jerk!

If bush really had compassion for the troops, he wouldn't make them do multiple tours in Iraq. Some troops are on their 4th or 5th deployment.
Bush is nothing but show and lies. He wouldn't shorten their time back home with their families.

you must understand,
bush is not a bad man,
and his administration is well intentioned.
that is why in january 2009,
bush, cheney, rove, rumsfeld, wolfowitz, feith, rice, gonzales, addington,
libby, and the other well intentioned souls
are heading straight and directly to baghdad - the green zone.

they will continue to work their life's work
in the heart of the challenge
they created.

they are good and noble people,
and would never send another's
sons and daughters,
to kill another's sons and daughters
unless there was a noble american task at stake.

let's start the draft on this great noble american cause.
bush is the great leader that understood that 911 was sadaam hussein.
only a genius like bush could bring america
to such a beautiful finish.

let us all sing in the sunshine of freedom.

Why in the world was he crying?
He and Cheney are fond of re-telling: "It's an all-volunteer force - they knew what they were getting into"
thus absolving themselves of any guilt related to leading our Nation into an illegal invasion and occupation.
If it is so noble a duty then why arent the Bush Twins or Romney's Sons+Daughters over there in the green zone, making this world safe for democracy?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:38 AM on 04/12/2008

Again, it's an all volunteer force - regardless of why they volunteered. Although I believe everyone should serve at least 2 years, no one should be forced to join.

Why should their children be criticized for not joining? How does that make Bush or Chaney hypocrites? They're not criticizing those who don't join. They just don't want the ones who do to be disrespect because they chose to serve their country in the military. Sounds like your feeling a complex. How noble are your deeds?

Your sarcasm just makes you an @$$.

Wow what a jerk.

The troops volunteered. Does that mean we can keep sending them back to a combat zone until they get killed or maimed?

Or just until the PTSD ruins the family life they might have?

Or just until hell freezes over?

Move to a country that will have your sorry ass.

George W. Bush is a walking time bomb. He needs a drink. Can't have a drink. And will eventually give in to the Drink. An alcoholic and an abuser of cocaine who refuses to face the reality of his dilemma will not last. You can see it in his rigidity. He is going to crack when there is no one around to force him to tough it out. He may look tough on the outside, and talk tough, but there is really nothing there on the inside. That is why he is so dangerous. Those who support him know this but insist we only take him for his surface features. He is just a fragile shell and has no inner core of his own to sustain him. It's only a matter of time, folks.

I love the part of the "story" that says Bush regrets the drinking problem 'he struggled with as a younger man". I guess that is true that he was younger than he is now, but I saw a video recorded 16 years ago at a wedding reception where the bushster was drunk as a skunk. Do you really call a 50 year old man young. (i hope so). They make it appear like he was a wreckless teenager.

Chimp tears from a goldbricker.

Buy him a beer, ship his butt to Iraq, and let him stand a post in a combat zone with the men and women he has put in harm's way with his dry-drunk arrogance.

Bush was selected to be front-man by the Corporate Power Majority due to his acting skills, and his inate ability to lie with a straight face. He plays the dumb-ox to provide the only cover possible for his deplorable actions: plausible deniability regarding ill intent. "He's so stupid - could he really be intentionally malicious?"

The answer is a resounding "YES".
