Pelosi Calls Out Petraeus For Parroting Bush Spin

We noted yesterday the bizarre way that General Petraeus' testimony changed between his Tuesday appearance before the Senate committees and his Wednesday presentation before the members of the House of Representatives:

Perhaps sensing that his testimony on Tuesday was undermining the official White House version of events in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus today offered a dramatically different interpretation of the recent violent unrest in Basra...

The recent armed conflicts there, paced by the powerful Sadrist faction, are the rock in the road that Petraeus and Crocker have had to get around since these hearings began, as the ill-timed flare-ups have provided ample evidence that the "surge" strategy may not be working as either a security measure or a means to sectarian reconciliation. The Bush administration has little choice but to spin every dire crisis as a sign of evident success, so Petraeus offer[ed] an argument [on Wednesday] that Maliki's response to Basra was evidence that the government is essentially functional...

All of which sounds hopeful, or, at least it would, were it not for the fact that Petraeus spent the [previous] day suggesting precisely the opposite.

Today, in response to President Bush's assessment of the current state of play in Iraq and the testimony proffered by Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi homed in on this discrepancy, suggesting that the administration was trying to "put a shine on what happened in Basra."

Additionally, her assessment of the Basra conflict squares with the facts, namely, that the Iraqi security effort "didn't perform up to par, that the U.S. had to come in to bail them out, and the only reason that any level of peace or a reduction in violence occurred is because al-Sadr decided not to continue his side of the violence."

"So that determination was made by al-Sadr, not by the success of the Iraqi military," Pelosi said.

PELOSI: In fact, the generals there have said the greatest threat or the greatest obstacle to peace and reconciliation in Iraq are not the Sunnis, are not the Iranians, are not the al Qaeda. The biggest obstacle to reconciliation and peace in Iraq is the Iraqi government.

Now let me say this. You talked about the performance of the military. Before the general and the ambassador came up, the end of last week, I said -- and maybe it was -- yeah, it was the end of last week -- I said that one of the tests I had as to whether General Petraeus was going to put a shine on what happened in Basra -- what we know happened in Basra is that -- well, the facts are these: that in Basra the Iraqi military planned to go into Basra because of the violence and unrest that existed there. They did not inform us until 48 hours in advance of that initiation of engagement. Why did we have to find out 48 hours in advance? They should have told us sooner. But don't we spend tens of billions of dollars on intelligence? Why didn't we know?

Secondly, he honestly responded on Monday to the Senate when he said that the Iraqi government -- the Iraqi troops did not perform up to par. And the facts are that we know that they didn't perform up to par, that the U.S. had to come in to bail them out, and the only reason that any level of peace or a reduction in violence occurred is because al-Sadr decided not to continue his side of the violence. So that determination was made by al-Sadr, not by the success of the Iraqi military.

So he gave a fairly straightforward answer, not all that I just said, but about the performance of the Iraqi troops. The next day he changed his tune as to what happened in Basra. I wonder why. Perhaps he heard from the commander in chief. I think it's time we hear from the commander in chief to these serious questions, because the president can have all the speeches he wants, he can make all the statements he wants, but we still have many unanswered questions as we continue to put our men and women in harm's way.

There is nothing this outlaw administration hasn't politicized---our military, our Justice Dept., our regulatory agencies--everything.

When is Congress going to apologize to MoveOn.org for censuring the ad that they ran about Petraeus? Based on the nonsense and garbage we had to wade through as testimony this week from him and Crocker, that ad of theirs was dead on target.

It appears that Petraeus really IS far more loyal to Bush than he is to his uniform or his country.

May be someone should remind Petraeus that he is under oath. He can't just make up the facts as he thinks them to be advantageous to the White House. He needs to tell the truth. He owes it to the uniform he wears. He also owes it to the troops who serve under him. The American people are watching this very closely. Spinning the facts with lies only hurts his own credibility. Congress should cut off funding in the next war spending bill that is up before Congress. Unfortunately that is not likely to happen in an election year. I'm glad Pelosi is calling out Petraeus on his lies and misstatements.

It doesn't matter if your a General or not, somewhere along the line you started out as a corporal and that's where they got you. They got into your head and conditioned you into one who must obey orders from above. Petraeus can't help himself. He's kind of like the Manchurian Candidate, only Petreaus will never turn against his master.

Speaker Pelosi knows politics as well as anyone in America and she has spotted a politician in General's garb in General Petraeus.

The Bush/Cheney politicizing the military is a threat to our national security and to you and your family. Ass-licking, running dog politicos do not earn the respect to win wars. That's a fact.

Why are the good military leaders retiring? Or quitting at the peak of their careers?

Dear Rep / Senator,

The Bush Administration has committed so many high crimes and misdemeanors that it is beyond the scope of this letter to cite these violations of law.
The Bush Administration has damaged America"s reputation in the world beyond repair. America is no longer considered "good." America will now be remembered as "hypocrites of torture," and "a force of evil."
Now our economy is in severe recession because of failed political and economic policies of this Administration.
As a member of Congress you swore an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.
It is your duty to impeach President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Secretary of State Rice, Attorney General Gonzales and members of this Administration who have participated in criminal activity immediately.
Failure to impeach means you are in violation of your Constitutional oath.
Which is it?
As a tax paying citizen and registered voter, I demand an explanation. I want to see articles of impeachment introduced now!
If you are in violation of your Constitutional oath; then the Constitution of the United States of America is dead!
If you refuse to act out of fear, cowardice or for other reasons, I will see you voted out office and replaced with a 3rd party candidate.
We elected you to represent us, the common citizen. Make us proud this one time. Hear our cry of patriotism and introduce impeachment articles against this Administration.
Sincere Regards,

Petraeus must toe a fine line between following orders from his CinC and telling what he really thinks should be done in Iraq. I think it is wrong to blame _him_ for any shortcomings in this department. Why on earth should he be questioned about policy in Iraq when shrub is the Decider?

The Decider is the one who should be holding a dialog with Congress and the American people, but he is inept as well as a coward, a clueless coward who doesn't have the foggiest idea of what the final outcome should look like.

It makes me sick No one, not Biden, not Obama, definitely not Hillary, no one, stood up to Petraeus about immediate withdrawal.

Not that it has to happen that way, but, lets go back to what Bush said at the beginning- we're going to find WMD and remove it. OK, done! no WMD, but thats now something we have investigated, and its now something we dont have to worry about. He also said we need to remove Saddam from power. Again, DONE!! Mission accomplished!
Everyone talks about how withdrawing is defeat. IT IS NOT DEFEAT!!!
When we left Vietnam, it was not defeat! We simply ended the occupation. And that was a REAL war.

It will be the same when we leave Iraq. It will not be defeat. We will simply be ending the occupation.
They'll be better off by themselves. America does not own Iraq.
America does not lose wars. This is not a war, it is an occupation.

Obama lost a lot of credibility that day, because we are so counting on him to stand up to these criminals. And he's folding like everyone, and I mean everyone else. He could have argued for argument's sake, what immediate withdrawal, or fast and sure withdrawal would look like. Predictably, they would have said disaster. That's a lie. This is where they intimidate all of us. With this outrageous fear- OMG!!! We'll be DEFEATED!!!
Obama let himself be intimidated with everyone else.
Shameful. Where's the outrage? where's the cojones? Shameful.

REMEMBER THIS: An attack on Iran in October is the last legacy of the maniac. How will this play in the November election? Of course, we'll NEED McWar when we are involved in three wars at the same time. REMEMBER THIS!

I won't rest til My family and friends get justice!

Raisean: Why choose impeachment or prison when *both* are so very appropriate? Impeach. THEN put on trial for war crimes. It's the first step on a long journey back towards finding our principles.

Yes, Nancy has been very effective and delivered all her promises. Thank heavens we got a Democratic Congress in 2006, or we would be where we are today? Words are cheap, but fortunately, the people forget and don't hold you accountable.

shes an idiot, I believe she is george soros sister you all know him, he's that far left wing democrat, that gave barack 40,000,000 dollars, and is starting a smear campaign that will backfire on the dems. We have to remember that you can't smear a war hero no matter what war he was in. I myself can't imagine what kind of torture he had to endure at the hand of Jane's men in Vietnam. you all know the traitor Jane Fonda, Henry is probably so proud of her. no matter how unpopular the Vietnam war was to the traitors of this country. John McCain is a real war hero, and he has said publicly that the only thing that kept him going was the love for his country, and his family. He may not tell the truth all the time, but I trust him to run the country more than the suit, and the airhead. Soros is spending a portion of his fortune for nothing. I pray that God takes away all his money, and lets him live another 20-25 years penniless.

What Petraeus did was the same thing Scooter and others were convicted of, lying under oath to congress. Why does he get to walk free?

And before it totally drops from everyones memory , like the Columbian Free Trade agreement post did here at HuffPo, I would like to point out that the Right Wing Paramilitary Group in Columbia is a designated terrorist group by the US gov. And isnt it the case that we , the US, is not suppose to help any government that harbors terrorist groups?

Oh wait, I forgot , that is only used when the Powers that Be want to force another Government to do something. We are BBF with Pakistan, Saudi, and many other countries that knowingly harbor and cater to terrorist. This whole Columbia trade deal is a total scam.

Trolls, trolls, trolls.

never read a line they didn't want to co-opt.

Nancy Pelosi is proving to be a huge problem for sure, but not because of Florida and Michigan.
She is actually right about that. As a matter of fact its the one instance that I feel she said something when there was actually doubt about how it would play politically.

She's right on the Delegates, and wrong on just about everything else. She's Never out in front on any matter of gravity to us. She only weighs in on matters of political childsplay, while showing utter cowardess in the face of any matter that requires principle.
