NEW YORK — If Neil Patrick Harris had his way, Britney Spears would be banned from the set of "How I Met Your Mother." Nothing against the pop singer personally _ he just doesn't think the show should bring guests aboard for a ratings boost alone.

"I'm in the minority that our show does not need stunt casting in order to succeed," Harris declared during a break from taping the Monday night CBS sitcom, which has grown a cult following since its 2005 debut.

"I worry that if they start `Will and Grace'-ing us too much, that the show will suffer. And we're all really proud of the content of the show. I mean, viewership is not our game. It's the network and the studio's game, you know. It's the promotion department's game," the actor, who plays womanizer Barney, told The Associated Press in an interview last week.

Spears has been the most high-profile guest star to visit the set, following past appearances by Mandy Moore, Enrique Iglesias and Heidi Klum. But her capable March 24 cameo _ feverishly promoted, anticipated, blogged-about, critiqued, analyzed and, ultimately, well-reviewed _ gave Harris pause to voice a concern: Was the show selling out?

"We wish we weren't opposite an awkward reality dancing competition," he said. "But we have no say about that. I just am a real fan of our content. I think we have a great show going, and I hope it's not screwed up by the desire for 700,000 more viewers."

Make that 1 million more viewers for the Britney episode, which grabbed an audience of 10.6 million tuning in as Spears filled her small role as a bubbly receptionist. Among the 18-to-49-year-old demographic, it was the most-watched episode of the series ever.

The show has an average viewership this season of 8 million per episode, including reruns; last season, it attracted an average of 8.5 million viewers each showing. It returned with all-new episodes last month following the writers strike, capturing 9.6 million viewers the week before Spears' appearance and slipping back to 9.5 million the week after.

Executive producer Carter Bays told the AP he'd be open to another Spears guest spot. As it happened, the pop star's camp approached the show, and Bays is proud of the result: "We had no illusions about what the stakes were. And if it was classic stunt casting, like, `Oh, my tour bus broke down outside' and I just go, `Wow, Britney Spears, what are you doing here?' then, like, we're just flying over that shark real fast. It was a great character and I think she played it well. ... I'm glad that we didn't sensationalize the character in any way."

The show concluded with Spears' secretary flirting with Barney. The following episode, which aired last Monday, introduced a "mystery woman" who's been warning other women not to date the single-minded cad. Asked if Spears might turn out to be the secret slanderer, Bays said: "Could be. There's no reason why not." He also suggested the talented actress Sarah Chalke, who guest starred alongside Spears.

Asked for his guess, Harris said: "No telling, but based on the stunt casting we've done in the past I'm guessing Tara Reid."

"How I Met Your Mother" stars Harris, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel as an urban family of twentysomething New Yorkers. A familiar premise (see: "Friends"), yet the show has stood apart through its own brand of clever writing and in-jokes, cast chemistry and signature use of flashbacks.

Still, it lacks the broad appeal of shows like "Friends," which had a celebrity cast and a string of celebrity guest stars, and fellow CBS sitcom "Two and a Half Men." It doesn't have the industry recognition of NBC critical darlings "30 Rock" and "The Office." Its only major Emmy nomination went to scene-stealer Harris last year for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

"The challenge for the show has always been to get more eyeballs on it," said Radnor, who portrays unlucky-in-love architect Ted. "The only thing _ and this is not a slam on any of the other shows on CBS on Monday _ but the only thing we have in common with those shows is we're half an hour, multi-camera shows with a laugh track."

Radnor compared the show to an under-the-radar, yet-to-be-discovered band.

"That's why the people who love this show looooooove this show because I think it's like your favorite band that hasn't gotten popular enough for you to start hating it," he said. "So you can still kind of love it and wear the T-shirt and speak in code with the other people who are on to it, but it hasn't tipped into this kind of phenomenon where you start to turn on it."

Neil Patrick Haris is the stinkiest one on the show.

Although Britney needs some physc. help I still love the sexy thing, the show she appeared on sucks anyway, and should be canceled.

If NPH can play a HETEROSEXUAL womanizer, why can't Brittany play a woman on the show?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:37 PM on 04/12/2008

Because she is talentless.

I agree with NPH. This show is good enough that it does not require stunt casting. I'd much rather that they keep the quality up rather than dumbing the show down for mass appeal ala Friends. This is one of the only sitcoms good enough to make me tolerate the dreaded Laugh Track.

'How I Met Your Mother' is one of the best sitcoms available on television right now. They shouldn't cheapen the great writing, directing and acting by trotting untalented celebrities through the show. Britney Spears is a hot mess. At least the people that handle her have the good taste to try and get her puffed up face on a good show. NPH-love him, love his work.

Am I the first to have the guts to say this? Actually, Britney gave an awful performance.
Any one of the hundreds of unknown actresses who have appeared on this show
could have done a better job.

I must admit that I am getting a little sick and tired of the Barney character. His unrelenting
bad treatment of women and the collusion in his behavior of the other characters is
getting just a bit too much to take. Do the writers on this show think that women are
human, too?

I am sure that Harris is frustrated by the prospect of his show being dumbed down by the likes of Britney Spears. He is a trained actor who has gotten great reviews and respect for both TV and Stage roles. It happens to be a nice show to watch. Britney was adequete in the part she played - not great, just adequate. Thousands of other actresses could have done the same or better.
I am not going to want to tune into this show just because Britney Spears is on it. She has been over-exposed already. I am not sure what her talent is anyway. For awhile it was partying w/o underwear. Britney needs to lay low for awhile and get herself together. She was out of the spotlight for what 2 days? Her father and other handlers are back to pimping her out as their meal ticket. Why doesn't her father get a job of his own instead of pushing his daughter back into the spotlight. I don't want her taking center stage on the shows I enjoy watching. I don't want to see her anywhere.

This show is no Will and Grace, except that Neil Patrick Harris is gay. His show? I thought it was an ensemble show. It is not Neil Patrick Harris' How I Met Your Mother, it is How I Met Your Mother. He is not even the best actor on the series.

You're right. HIMYM is no Will and Grace. This one's actually funny.

Watch the show people before you comment. He is right. This show could stand on it's own based on the cast chemistry and the writing. I am actually a fan but something about the Brittany episode was very "Jumping the Shark" like to me. I hope they don't go down this path too much.

this show is the most terrible show on tv, even worse than Friends, seinfeld,Reba, or any other of the so called sit-coms. on tv.

Haven't seen this show, but is "Doogie" the dud he is in everything else? (i.e. unlikable wet noodle) If there's a viewership problem, it's generally the cast or the writing. Might look into that.

Maybe they DO need real celebrities on the show, because before that I had never heard of the show. I only watched clips of the Britney stint, but otherwise this is not a show I would normally watch. This pompous ass ought to be grateful to someone like Britney, who at times may be a trainwreck, but is always a money catcher. The mention of her name makes money, so why in the world would that be a bad thing, unless this idiot is jealous that he is not A-list as she is...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:12 AM on 04/11/2008

You seem to have missed his point. The show is good enough to stand on it's own and it doesn't need super hyping about who the guest star is this week.

The reference to Will and Grace says it all...when their storylines began to fade and the characters along with it, they brought in a great crew of guest stars every week and the show became about that.

This is a very strong show, with a good and talented cast and though I am not a 20 something and very selective about what I view, I love the show, especially NPH and what he adds to the talented cast.

There are actors with talent who continue to work and don't seek stardom and then there is Britney with some talent who only seems to seek being a star...

And then there's the network that exploits that.

"viewership is not our game" This explains a lot.

"awkward reality dancing competition"....

I don't think most people consider Dancing with the Stars an "awkward reality" show. It may or may not be your cup 'o tea, but it shows a complete disconnect from the medium on Patrick Harris' part to sum up DWTS in that manner. A bit condescending tinged with envy. Frankly, I had never heard of his show until the Spears cameo. I liked him in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. He played himself as a tightly-wound blast-from-the-past celebrity. And honestly, that portrayal seems to have been dead on. He's got a stick up his butt with "holier than thou" written all over it. My positive image of him from the Harold & Kumar film has now been trashed.

You're not really defending Dancing with the Stars over a well written and well acted comedy program, are you?

"My positive image of him from the Harold & Kumar film has now been trashed."

Seriously, you can't seriously take it so seriously.

It's his show, you know, so he's apt to have a stake and an opinion. For you to have either seems a little obsessive.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:32 AM on 04/11/2008

Hmmm. So HE can have an opinion... but tor ME to have an opinion, I'm obsessive? Of course it's his show, his stake, his opinion. But that doesn't have anything to do with the fact that I find him to be a pretentious jerk.

"Doogie Hauser" was a great show. Clever and different. Well-written, too.

In a few years now one will even remember his name. Even now I've forgotten it and I can't bother to page up to find it.

On the other hand Britney will live forever.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:17 AM on 04/11/2008

Actually... that part about her living long at all is subject of much debate. In terms of a well-managed life, I kinda have to go with Neil, who, by the way, you're talking about even when you don't know who he is. Not bad for someone you never heard of, you gotta admit.

To goodog,

Actually, your right, I don't know him nor do I want to after his snid remarks about Britney. She is doing quite well thank you very much, and she demonstrated - on his show - that she has more talent in her pinky finger than he has in his entire, self-absorbed, narcissist body. Only someone like him (whomever he is), could make such a petty statement.

He needs to focus on his own performance, so people will tune in to watch him instead of the guest apprearances of more talented celebrities.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:59 PM on 04/12/2008

Your show should only be 1/10 the show that Will & Grace was, Doogie.

It's awful, just awful, and your character is about as believable as the preznit never snorting coke.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:32 PM on 04/10/2008

The show isn't awful - that's just silly. It's a well-written comedy. Also silly, caring whether or not "Barney" is believable as a real person. It's a sitcom, not a documentary.

That said, I think Neil Patrick Harris should've kept his mouth shut about Britney's appearance. She's a troubled person trying to get her life back together, she did a good job, and it's unfair to comment in a way that makes it look like he's blaming her for the stunt casting, even though I know that probably wasn't his intent. However, he didn't say that after any of the other numerous stunt castings, so he should've left it alone when it came to Britney.
