MUNCIE, Ind. — Barack Obama sees himself with a disadvantage in Pennsylvania and with an advantage in North Carolina.

"So Indiana may end up being the tiebreaker," he said this week.

As he completes a four-day tour of the Hoosier state, that's the Illinois senator's assessment of the Democratic presidential contests in the coming three weeks.

For Obama, that's a tough call. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has single digit leads in the state, according to recent polls. She has the support of the state's popular Democratic senator, Evan Bayh. And the state has a sizable number of blue collar industrial workers, a demographic group that has leaned in her favor.

But Obama is from neighboring Illinois, and is well-known in the Indiana counties around Lake Michigan that have access to Chicago's media market. He also has the support of two respected former members of Congress from Indiana _ Lee Hamilton and Tim Roemer.

Pennsylvania holds its primary April 22. Indiana and North Carolina hold theirs two weeks later. A two-out-of-three outcome in favor of the Illinois senator at the end of that stretch may not drive Clinton out of the race, but it would deflate her argument that Obama can't carry an industrial state where blue-collar workers predominate.

"If he wins Indiana, that's a pretty strong signal that he's probably going to secure the nomination in my view," said Rep. Baron Hill, an Indiana Democrat who has not endorsed either Clinton or Obama. Significantly, Hill is a superdelegate, one of nearly 800 party leaders and elected officials who could determine the nomination.

Obama has been pouring money into the state with ads and field offices. His bus tour this week is his longest stay in the state. He visited six of the state's nine congressional districts, packing high school gymnasiums and rousing audiences with a condemnation of Washington and special interests.

In many ways, Obama's message is no different from what he was delivering months ago in Iowa and New Hampshire. But he has spiced up his economic themes, adding a populist bite aimed at the very blue collar workers that have gravitated to Clinton in previous contests.

"Working class white males hold the balance of power," said Lawrence J. Hanks, a political scientist at Indiana University.

Roemer, the former congressman who has endorsed Obama, said he gave the Illinois senator a book on how Robert Kennedy won the Indiana primary in 1968.

"I think he's reading it because the Kennedy battle plan was to go to the cities and get the big crowds, but also to make sure that you aggressively recruit the blue collar community and convey to them all you have in common with them," Roemer said.

That message took a hit Friday. Clinton and Republicans accused Obama of being an out of touch elitist for stating, during a private meeting with California donors, that economic bitterness had driven some working class people to "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Obama modulated that assessment Friday night before an audience in Terre Haute:

"People end up voting on issues like guns and are they going to have the right to bear arms. They vote on issues like gay marriage. They take refuge in their faith and their community, and their family, and the things they can count on. But they don't believe they can count on Washington."

He added: "People are fed up, they are angry, they're frustrated and they're bitter. And they want to see a change in Washington."

But the criticism was not letting up as Republicans called on congressional Democrats to denounce Obama's remarks, and Clinton called the remarks "demeaning" and "not reflective of the values and beliefs of Americans" while campaigning Saturday in Indiana.

Obama acknowledged Saturday that his words were ill chosen.

"I didn't say it as well as I should have," he said.

On the stump, Obama can get his share of advice. "You need to smile more," one man told him in Columbus. He's also heard some awkward praise: "I want to compliment you on you grammar," one woman told him.

In this state, voters seem delighted that they matter. Few believed that the presidential contest would still be undecided in May. But the ongoing campaign has given some voters the time to make up their minds.

"I didn't think he was for real," said Ramon Gerber, a 67-year-old retiree from Columbus. "So young and so fresh. So I thought, well, he looks nice and sounds nice, but I wasn't sure. But I think I'm sure enough to vote for him."

As for winning two out of three, Hanks, the Indiana University political scientist, believes Obama needs to win in states where he is favored and stay within 10 points in states where he is not. That would be enough to sustain his edge over Clinton in delegates, states won and the popular vote.

"The Clinton strategy is to construct a basis for winning without the big three _ most states won, most delegates, and greater number of voters," he said. "In this sense, there is no tiebreaker."

This time I will not question his campaign skills. I can see from the article that Sen. Obama said "may end up being" a tiebreaker. Maybe someone needs to buy the media a dictionary. Notwithstanding that, once again, his remarks need to put into the context in which they were delivered. Clearly he was referring to the 3 state contests (PA, NC and IN) not the whole primary process.

But when I first read the headline I thought that Sen. Obama must have lost his mind. Why would he make Indiana, a state in which HRC is leading, the tie breaker in the race when he is leading in popular votes, states won and delegates? Using Clintonian logic, if they win PA and IN they will use the media's misrepresentation of his words to claim that HRC should be the nominee. (He said it's the tiebreaker! We won!") And naturally, the MSM will create a narrative in which Sen. Obama will be accused of going back on (something he never actually said) his word . This is all getting so tiring and predictable.

Interetingly we don't see Roman Catholics desertintg the pope for creating a safe haven for
Roman Catholic priest who was a pedophile. A former nazi who protects pedophiles and you have the audacity to complain about Wright?

Talk about double standards. Okay for white priests to be protected against prosecution for pedophilia while it is not okay for a black minister to speak about (patriotically as did Martin Luther King, Jr.) his country with anything but praise.

Too many racists to count.

I am sick and tired of reading comments from people who have never set foot in the rust belt. I am an attorney in a dying Michigan town, and I get calls all day long from people who have lost hope. They are getting divorced. They are asking what will happen if they abandon their homes. They want to change custody arrangements because there are no jobs in the state. Women ask if they can keep their wedding rings if they declare bankruptcy.

Oh but keep trumpeting on about how we Midwesterners are proud, positive patriots. A local factory owner took all the machinery out of a factory at night, and ran off with the workers' pension monies and the federal government's reaction was to shrug its shoulders. American Axle wants its workers here to take a 50% paycut. But we are such proud, resilient people, we wouldn't ever be bitter, right? Your patronizing attitudes are neither wanted or needed.

People ARE bitter. They feel the government has abandoned them. And they do cling to their religion. I know I do. There are times in my life when I felt like I had no hope, and a this such a time for many people. A man in church today said that he could not remember a time when people were so depressed or downtrodden. He asked that we pray that our leaders open their eyes and see the suffering.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:31 PM on 04/13/2008

Whenever Obama gets caught he surely knows how to put a spin on it. Wonder what else he says behind closed doors and does not get caught. I think he is arrogant and it showed when he went behind those closed doors with the "elitist". Most likely laughing all the way to the presidency by telling the SanFran group, don't worry give me more money and I will assure you whatever you want, we can fool those small town folks can't you see how good i speak and have already fooled so many. Hopefully more will carry tape recorders. He is such a fraud.

The Clintons make over $109 million over the past several years and Obama is the elitist? They take money wherever the can get it (Bill accepts money from the Colombian lobby, Hilary is against the Colombian lobby) from all the power brokers that have an agenda and Obama is the elitist?

Get your fact straights buddy, the only elitists and frauds in this race are the Clintons.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:56 PM on 04/13/2008

I was there when he came in and the crowd went wild. He only was there to do a quick walk through to shake hands, about twenty minutes. By the time he left, Kirkwood, the street in front of Nick's was flooded with people. With cell phones, the word got out quickly. Most, but not all, were IU students. They crowded the bus and the police had to clear the street so the bus could leave. I have not seen anything like that in Bloomington since Bobby Kennedy visited in 1968. You cannot "fake" that degree of enthusiasm and all the advance work in the world can't pull that off if you don't have a candidate like Obama. He;s the real deal.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:51 PM on 04/13/2008

Here in Indiana, people are bitter, and they have guts enough to admit it. This may set BHO back for a few days- but our primary is still a few weeks off.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:08 PM on 04/13/2008

Sold to the Hillaryite full of manufactured outrage.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:59 PM on 04/13/2008

Listen to his words without trying to distort them. People sociologically do revert to religion and guns in time of frustration. But that's not even what he said! People feel hopeless and bitter about what they can't seem to change.
You sir,, like all Republicans, flag wave and tout your psudo patriotism yet subvert the democratic process by trying to tweak it to your advantage. Are you so lacking confidance iin your own candidate that you feel it necessary to attempt to sabatage his oppoenent's campaign to your advantage?
Dems didn't go vote Huckabee. Who are the real patriots? Bush has underfunded the soldiers and THEY are even voting Obama! Haliburton has caused deaths of soldiers it could have prevented with proper and sufficient equipment. Suicides among soldiers, homelessness due to their unemployment because they can't adjust psychologically as the VA won't help them. Don't you people read?
Why are you so afraid of chnge? You like wasting trillions on a war without end and paying $4 a gallon for gas? Talked to a trucker lately?
I think Obama in Indiana should challenge his opponents to a full court 2 -on- 1 basketball game.
When Barack dunks one on Johnny and Hil, that could be an omen of November...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:49 PM on 04/13/2008

I agree. I showed the written copy of the speech to more than ten people who I knew had not listened to the news for two or three days for various reasons. One did not have a college degree and one had a Master's degree. They came from all socio-economic levels. The ages ranged from 18 to 65; however, all but one was a woman. Several are very conservative Republicans and I knew that one of the others really loves Hillary. I did not tell them where the speech came from or who gave it. I just asked them what they thought of it. NOT ONE person found anything wrong with it. When I asked them who they thought had given the speech. The answers were all over the place, but only one said Obama. Now, my point is this. Without the media or the other candidates putting a spin on this speech -- I wonder just how wrong most people would find it.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:54 PM on 04/13/2008

Typical Obama double speek strategy.Spend like no end to convince PA voters that you are with them, then go to your Liberal base and explain to them what you REALLY think about them-lunatics who cling to religion and guns because they are bitter. Even worse -try to explain it saying you just chose wrong words.Thats even more condescending-to think that common man cannot distinguish the difference between words he used and his modiofied version. Obama fans out there who believe that this is no issue and cannot see this mans disconnect with common voter here should go back and examine one Mr.Kerrys election disaster history.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:17 PM on 04/13/2008

Try going back and reading his entire speech in context before posting your ill-informed drivel. What do you know about the common voter? I am a common voter, and certainly don't see things the way you do! I actually took the time to read the entire speech and clearly understand where he was coming from. When people are angry and frustrated they do indeed tend to resort to single-issue voting in order to express that frustration. This really isn't big news to those who actually bother to keep themselves informed. There was absolutely nothing condescending about what he said. Yes, he could have expressed it better, but then nobody is perfect.

good comment seattle blogger.
I am signing up voters for the democratic race in North Carolina (Asheville) and not one person buys into the Hillary nonsense over this. However, there is a legitimate groundswell that Hillary Clinton (and perhaps Bill Clinton even more) is a serial liar.

I can tell from your post that the stats are absolutely correct. The uneducated voter tends to support Hillary. Thanks for proving the point.

Poor grammar, poor sentence construction; resorts to hyperbole rather than fact.

You may not need to get a life but you certainly need to get an education.

Americans do not like to be told the truth and that is why the Bush administration had to lie to us in order to invade iraq.

Barack Obama told the truth, people are bitter because the America dream is slowly slipping away from them and the likes Hilary comes in there and lie and panders to them and they buy that. it is a shame where you get beaten from the media for stating the truth.

I hope voters in Pennsylvania and indianna understand what he meant and stop listenning to lies from Hilary.
