Surrogates to Sen. Barack Obama said on Saturday that while the Senator regrets the phrasing of his remarks, in which he said Pennsylvanians were bitter and "clinged" to guns, religion and anti-immigration sentiment because of economic frustrations, he would ultimately not apologize for them.

"He regrets the wording of the remarks and he was sorry for the offense that anybody took from them," said Obama's senior strategist, David Axelrod, "but I think the most important thing is that the essence of what he said is something he feels very strongly about. There is a real anger among many in the communities... they are tired of politicians who come around at election time and express their solicitude as part of a tactic and don't follow through on it."

The defense of Obama, who is under withering attacks that his comments - first reported by Huffington Post's Off The Bus - were elitist, out of touch and condescending, did not end there. Other surrogates to the Senator insisted that Obama's political opponents should be the ones offering regret for politicizing the issue.

"The only apologies that would be appropriate would be from the Sens. [Hillary] Clinton and [John] McCain's campaigns who are trying to make an issue out of this," said John Futterman, mayor of Bradick, Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately for Futterman, such apologies seem all but certain not to happen. Indeed, an hour before the Obama campaign convened its conference call, the Clinton camp held one of its own. In it, surrogates to the New York Democrat took repeated jabs at the "bitterness" remark, saying, on several occasions, that it made Obama out-of-touch and unelectable in small-town America.

"I found them to be condescending and disappointing," said Clinton's national campaign co-chair and Iowa Governor, Tom Vilsack. "They reflected in my view a flawed reading of people who live in small towns in Pennsylvania and other states... I found his remarks undercut his message of hope... What they want is not a pat on the head from a presidential candidate; what they want is a pat on the back."

In addition to the call, the Clinton campaign peppered reporters throughout Saturday with video clips and written statements of surrogates (in Indiana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania - three upcoming primary states) criticizing Obama's remarks. In a separate interview with Talking Points Memo, Geoffrey Garin, Clinton's new chief strategist, said the comments could be "damaging" to Obama in a general election and would serve as fodder for Sen. Clinton to woo the support of superdelegates.

Even Obama and his supporters acknowledged that his words didn't come off right.

"I don't think I would have used the same words that he used. I don't think that people are bitter, I do think people are angry," said Rick Gray, mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. "I think people are upset about the economic conditions of this county... They see executives getting large bonuses and they see themselves losing their pension and their health care. And there is a level of anger that is just seething there."

Acknowledging a phrasing error seems to be one component of Obama's hopes to stem the blowback from his remarks. In addition, his campaign, starting on Friday evening, has sought to call out Sen. Clinton as the one more out of touch with small town America: pointing both to revelations that she and her husband have made more than $100 million since leaving the White House, and the fact that her campaign (and not Obama's) accepts donations from registered Washington lobbyists.

On Saturday, Clinton's surrogates were asked whether the later issue concerned them in the same way manner that they were about Obama's remarks. The answer, among all six conference call attendees was a resounding: "No."

Clinton, they retorted, had stronger roots and a greater understanding of small town issues -- lobbyist money or individual income aside.

"I think it is difficult for a democratic candidates to be succeed in a general election if he misunderstands people who live in small towns," said Vilsack. "We are going to have to have someone on the top of my ticket who understands [god and guns]."

It always amazes me that, no matter what blunder and what offensive comments Obama makes, there are always people out there applauding and asking for more abuse. Must be the Wright effect.

Let's be honest here about Americans in small towns. They don't get out much in the world. No wonder they hear the truth and become bitter.

Do you have any data to back that up?

they never do...
This another example of rationalizing every Obama gaff - the man can never be seen as flawed - because the house of cards tumbles if he is exposed.
Obama said that the reason people 'cling' to religion (the 'cling' was as offensive as the 'bitter' remark) , guns etc is because they are bitter. My fundamentalist sister-in-law was enraged. She has never considered herself as 'clinging' to religion, she is religious because she has always had faith, her husband loves guns because he learned to shoot as a child. These are entirely separate from the economic status of the country - look to Obama's voting record to get a clear picture of that or ask him to explain his team member's talks with Canada....
Once again Obama has posited a ridiculous coupling which has to slide by with rhetoric rather than logic. He recently suggested taking millions from NASA to fund good works because he has decided that 'NASA doesn't inspire' anymore a far fetched notion that seemed more a throw off remark than a founded thing to say. The man is an out of touch con man.... an oddly familiar character flaw.

Excellent post by fourex on why the corporate crowd is so upset.

"Obama has hit a raw nerve with his populist comments, not with PA voters but with the corporate candidates, Hillary and McCain. When Obama asked PA voters to vote first for their economic interests, the corporate world sucked air. Flags were raised, warnings were sounded, the usual suspects turned up on the airways. How dare middle class voters put themselves first. As Greider, Phillips and Frank have written the middle class has voted against it's own economic interest for the last 25 years. This is the basis of corporate rule. How dare Obama try to change the equation.

Obama should neither regret nor apologize for telling the hard truth. He did not insult anyone - they chose to be insulted because they don't want to see their own failings and their own role in our decaying government. "A people get the government they deserve" and nowhere is this more applicable than in our liberal democracy. We have the best system of representative government ever devised because the citizenry always has the opportunity to regulate the powers. WE have failed to do that through apathy. Then we settle into the victim role in despair. It's time we all snapped out of it and took our government back and the first thing to do is face head-on our own mistakes.

Finally, a politician dares tell people they have a responsibility in changing our system and they haven't risen to it. Finally, a politician stops mere pandering and lies, promising to "bring their jobs back" to them while they sit around and wait when we all know that won't happen. Finally, a politician starts to open the discussion about the real work to be done, which includes people's attitudes, expectations, and actions, not just faulty assumptions that it will be done for them. I only wish that finally, the people cared enough to face their own fragile egos and insecurities, get over it, and start working to improve our system. If we don't do that, we're in for a world of real trouble.

Hey you condescending, elitist, latte drinking Obamabots, For such a educated bunch, its hard to believe that you cant understand why people are upset about his comments.
He basically to a bunch of rich people, penn small towns people cling to guns, religion, hate of others (bigots), anti immigration due to job lost. How many times do you think people will allow Obama, to claim a whole state racist. The race card is really wearing thin.
Heck, go back and review most of the posting by you liberal democrats. You and your candidate have no respect for moderate to conservative democrats. This same alienation is going to put McCain in the white house if Obama is nominated.

To illustrate my point:

It would be in your best interests to improve your written communication skills. With proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation you will be more effective. You can strengthen your arguments with a better understanding of your audience and consideration of tone. Thoughtful organization will also help make a more positive impact. Obviously, you have a computer and online access. I suggest you browse for free language tutorials.

You might be angry right now, but I didn't lie to you. I am telling you a truth that, if accepted by you, may help you succeed. The elitist would merely prey on your weakness and use it to his or her benefit. I sincerely hope you choose self-improvement over bitterness.

First, I drink black coffee from home and I eat fast food. Second, I was raised in the industrial midwest working in the industrial battery business. I understand blue collar, middle class America as well as anyone else who has lived the life.

Obama's motivation for telling the truth is the opposite of elitism. Rather, his compassion and populism are the source of his message. Do you really belive the politicians lying to them and the corporations funding those politicians have the workers' interests in mind?

I do understand why they're angry. The truth is difficult. I'm sure we have all felt angry when faced with our own faults. Then, our reason and introspection should motivate us to improve our flaws because it is in the interest of survival.

The true elitsists lie and pander to keep people in their place. They have no interest in motivating those whom they control to think for themselves and to exercise their potential. If you were a true conservative Democrat, you would embrace the notion that people cannot rely entirely on the government to improve their lives and that they must work for it as well. It's interesting that instead you perpetuate the idea that they are nothing more than victims.

Breezeway, I lived in PA all my life and sad to say that many many are still bigots in PA. Unfortunately, Rendell was right on about that part. While Obama's statement was "correct" about many in small towns in PA it will give those bigots justification for their votes.

Obama did openly accuse Pennsylvanians of being racists ("antipathy to people who aren't like them").

I have to question Obama's honesty and faith he considers the foundation of his values.

"it's not surprising they're bitter, they cling to guns, religion, antipathy to people who aren't like them, anti-immigrant sentiment, anti-trade sentiment to explain their frustrations."

No rural Pennsylvanian clings to religion more than Obama, for 20 years sat silent in the pews, while a hate-spewing minister damned his country and everyone else. The question is not why Pennsylvanians "cling to their religion", but why Obama clings to the Trinity Church that's more extreme then rural America.

"Antipathy to people not like them""as in the case of Rev. Wright"s views of Jews, whites, Italians, or Americans in general? Obama accuses rural Pennsylvanians of a racism that they haven"t expressed while contextualizing the racism that his own Rev. Wright has.

Obama gives a condescending take on those he is courting. Pennsylvania is asking what is so sophisticated about the Trinity Church and Rev. Wright?

The essential Obama, a walking paradox between the postmodern hip-Ivy-Leaguer, sneering at middle-class America"s supposed prejudices and parochialism, at the same time courting anti-Enlightenment, prejudicial demagogue like Jeremiah Wright. Straight-talking or someone who evokes "context" to explain away the inexplicable?

We will see more of these condescending statements of the Michelle Obama strain, more of Revs. Wright, Meeks, Lee and peddlers of division like them, and more clues to a long hostility to Israel"in what will become the most disastrous chapter in Democratic history.

He should not apologize because it is the truth!!! If anybody that is church going will here from there family of members is some bitterness. What do we say is pray for our leaders. What we should be saying is pray and get up and go do something(vote). Pray first the do something (vote). We most not be distracted by the false leaders that say and do anything to get elected. We all can read. Read what Barack has writing years before he was grass root organizer, in the state senate, senate, now to become president of the United States. He is saying the same thing. Now, tell me one person you know that felt this way there whole life. Name one. I cannot hear you.

Listen to what Barack said months ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFOdOht5Ccs

Are Americans in small towns that sensitive about being called "bitter" and that they cling to religion or hunting or whatever because of their economical situation? S**t if that be so, then pity the fool who wants to help them. The words of Obama are now being compared to the Rev. Wright's angry message. Am i mssing something that was incediary about Obama's message? Could someone please explain the hate pill that is being fed to these miserable people who can't stand to be called "bitter" or does the truth hurt so much and their fragile lilttle egos can't take it because they are proud to be an American and Americans aren't bitter? Well I'm bitter, i'm fed up, I'm angry and I'm only blaming the MSM for this disturbanice in my brain, but i'll get over it -- so should these country folks in PA. But the MSM, the minions of the dark force, sure know how to stir the cauldron of hate right along with the Clintons and the Republicans. Senator Obama, why in the world would you want to be president of a country that is so fragmented and confused about who they are? Why would you want to be president of a broken society who seethe at every word that strikes a nerve, and why would you want to be president in a country that knows how to hate more than they know how to forgive and unite for a change?

Did you actually read the whole text of Reverend Wright's sermon? If you haven't, maybe you should.

Just exactly who are these "miserable people with fragile lilttle egos"?

You lump Clinton in with McCain? Have you compared Clinton and Obama's voting records in the Senate? If Clinton is so wrong, you're going to have a hard time explaining Obama's voting record.

elitism isn't about the money you make...it's about attitude...intellectual elitism, for example, isn't about money...it's a aire of superiority, snobbery, looking down your nose at other people who you do not understand or feel you have anything in common with...it's a lack of empathy...all of which are clearly evident in Obama's remarks. I'm utterly amazed that he continues to try to re-word or explain them away while refusing to just apologize for the insult he slung at the rural townsfolk of PA.

Clinton is DIVISIVE and still a LIAR - her faith and tradition must have failed somewhere because she told a blatant LIE not once but four times -

Hillary is on CNN right now, and she said she'll let Obama speak for himself about his PA statements. This after days of her calling him 'elitist' and 'divisive', calling every news outlet and ensuring the papers carried her BS, and giving out "I'm not bitter" buttons on the campaign trail.

I have never seen anyone this hypocritical and disingenuous in the Democratic party in all my life.

But his mock of Hillary's ad was ok? everything BO does is ok - why?

He condescends. Obamaniacs see this as an unfair criticism but he's another John Kerry with a more winning smile. He is elitist and he'll lose the election because of it.

You are shocked by politics... what about Barack's continual manipulation of white guilt? Decades after we'd all done that to death. Were you aware of the manipulation of race in his response to the valid shock over Rev Wright's hate speech?

Check Obama's voting record ... it's nearly identical to Clinton's. Read about BO and NAFTA - the Canada story.
