The war of rhetoric over presidential hopeful Barack Obama's "bitter" comments continued on this morning's news shows, as surrogates and supporters sparred to turn the issue to their advantage. On The Today Show, Clinton supporter James Carville stepped back from labeling Obama as an "elitist," but continued his criticisms from Sunday's Meet The Press, suggesting that the candidate lacked sufficient awareness of "cultural history." He recommended that Obama move away from pressing the issue any further.

[WATCH.]

LAUER: Let me ask you this, has Barack Obama committed a cardinal sin here, James, or is this politics as usual today, where a candidate says one thing to one group, tailors the message, if you will, and then says something else to another group?

CARVILLE: Being that the Pope is in the country, maybe we'll just call it a pretty serious venial sin. The more likely they talk about it, the more mortal it can become in a sin in the way we look at these things. I was surprised a bit that he wanted to keep the discussion going, because I don't think it was helpful for him. The statement itself was not only culturally insensitive, but it was inaccurate. But candidates make gaffes on the road and I think he ought to try to get this behind and talk more about working class people in a different way.

LAUER: Then let me ask you, as a longtime Democrat and someone who obviously wants to see your party -- whoever the nominee is -- do well in November, do you in your heart think that he is an elitist, unable to connect with the working class in this country?

CARVILLE: Well, I don't want to say somebody is an elitist, because I'm not exactly sure what that is, but I do think that as the campaign goes on and a lot of candidates grow, and I think in some ways that he's grown, and I think that as you go on, he wants to be sure that he has a better grasp of the cultural history of places like Pennsylvania, small towns in the midwest, and I think he can do that. I don't -- I'm not sure that John McCain has ever sort of lived the life that these people have lived, he's had a very honorable life, mostly in the military. But candidates grow and learn as they campaign and hopefully, that will happen with Senator Obama if he's the nominee. Senator Clinton, this may be an opportunity for her to come up and she may win this thing.

Meanwhile, over at MSNBC's Morning Joe, Obama strategist David Axelrod disputed the idea that Obama's background was lacking in "cultural awareness" and suggested that he should continue to talk about the issue. His take was that, ultimately, this discussion stood to damage Clinton more than it would help her.

[WATCH.]

BRZEZINSKI: But, David, the question is your candidate in touch with people like the folks in Pennsylvania? Senator Clinton said that Senator Barack Obama's remarks are elitist and out of touch and not reflective of the values and beliefs of Americans. What do you say to that?

AXELROD: Well, I'll tell you something. Senator Obama started his -- started his career in public service working for churches in a community in the shadow of closed steel mills and a community devastated by the economic challenges. I don't think he need any lectures being in touch from Senator Clinton.

SCARBOROUGH: Was this something, David, the second you heard it, you knew it was a problem? Did you guys go to the proverbial war room and say, okay, we need to have him back off of this?

AXELROD: Well, we didn't need a whole lot of time to reflect on the fact that this was going to be a political issue because the Clinton campaign lit up like a pinball machine. You know? So we didn't have to be too hesitant about this. But, you know, here's what I believe, Joe. I believe at the end of the day in presidential campaigns, they're like MRIs, right? They expose you for who you are and people will judge who you are. I know who Barack Obama is. I know what drives him in life. I know why he got into public life. I know what his sense of identification is with working people and people who are struggling in this economy. I know that he's a man of deep faith. So I have every confidence about this. I think people will see him for who he is. I think they'll see the others for who they are. I don't think they're going to suddenly buy that Hillary Clinton is the NRA candidate here or that somehow she's more devout in her Christianity than Senator Clinton. I think, ultimately, what is disdainful is when you play people cheap and I think that's what -- I think that's what she's doing out there and I think, ultimately, I agree with what Mika said. I think she's overplaying her hand here and she's the one who is going to suffer for it.

Carville has too m uch class to attack Obama no matter how loyal he is to the Clintons.
.
If anybody is wondering how bad the house crash is going to be, Carville/Matalin are selling their waterfront Alexandria home. That power couple has all the inside information and if they decided to sell now it means that selling later will be very bad.

carville has no class. Who are you and what rock have you ben hiding under for the past 10 years. Carville is a paid pundant by the clinton's. His job is to attack anybody who doesn't agree with hill and bill. He didn't attack Obama, because he KNOWS hillary will not be the nominee, therefore, he's playing politics.

Carville should pack and move........................his kind of politics is dying with bill and hill. And, that's a GREAT thing. The sleaze and gread is almost over>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> bye bye carville.

You know what will be funny out of all of this. Hillary will look like the desparate candidate that she is. Obama will eloquently defend what he meant and He will rise in the poll numbers as a result. Voter's intuition is extraordinary. They will see what is really happening.

If you don't believe me reference the Rev. Wright situation.

completely, absolutely agree about this. It's to Obama's benefit to discuss this fully, to show people what he is made of, esp those conservative Rust Belt voters who don't think they know who he is yet sufficiently. This is a discussion the country needs to have, between the fat cat status quo defenders like Carville, Clinton and McCain v the people who REALLY want and need change to happen, who are led by Obama, and that includes ALL those Rust Belt workers, whether they can figure out which side their bread is really buttered on, or whether they will be fooled by the Repugnants into voting against their own class interests, YET another time.

It's time to really discuss all this, to pick up the rocks and see what is really underneath. This is a natural outgrowth of Dean's 50 State strategy..Let's really look at the voters out there, who's being served, who's being screwed- ----by the CLintons, Bushes and McCains of this world.

Time to expose the Emperor's new clothes. Clinton is the Elitist!!!! Her, Bush, and McCain. Classic Projection. Will the people of PA see through it? I'm betting they will and are.

Yeah, you gotta love him. He tells it like it is. He is an expert strategist for the democrats and not afraid to say it.
I love how Axelrod says that it will hurt Hillary. Obama said it, he degraded small town America and blue collar workers. He is now losing white men and youth voters and Hillary is winning in wide margins and more super delegates.

Go listen to Bill Clinton and James Carville speak. You would think you were in the back hills of hell. What a difference a day makes. Now that we know we can hear the eloquence of Obama, Kerry, Gore, yes we can! Everyone should aspire to speak well or at least try. Hell street people know that. I am glad Obama brought out that difference. These old back hills people, rich or poor, will be the end of this country. It really comes down to respect for ourselves, others and language.

Ok America - there is an old saying - THE PEOPLE GET THE GOVERNMENT THEY DESERVE!

Look how Hillary, McCain, Bill, and the MSM has ONCE again distracted us for the issues with this trash. I am so sick and tired of this race baiting, poor people baiting, and bible throwing and out gunning that takes place EVERY FOUR YEARS!. We have got to stop letting these people play us for fools and pit us against each other. Remember this - no matter who wins this election - they ALL HAVE JOBS and GREAT HOMES. We are fighting to pay for higher gas and food prices, our childrent are being sent to war while theirs are in ivy league schools. They drink champaign while we drink beer. Then then come from on high every four years and pit us against each other to get votes. This is aweful. There is one candidate who said he would be honest with you, that he would work for you, that he hears us. They try to tear him down because he won't run their game. DON'T BE DUPPED AGAIN - VOTE YOUR WALLET!

These attacks from Hillary in particular are absolute trash - when you consider what she herself has said on the subject - something the MSM should be highlighting: check it out.

In an article on Time.com in November, for example, Mrs. Clinton was quoted as saying: "During the 1990s, I cannot remember being asked about immigration. Why? Because the economy was working. And average Americans didn't have to go around looking for others to blame."

Of course Obama worked in churches. Where else? The churches he worked in that make up the Black infrastructure in Urban Chicago -- and while many welcome Whites, etc. they still make up the Black infrastructure -- those churches are not the same as he referred to in his patronizing comments. And what about this "community organizing" -- what is that? what did he do? Anyone can print up a card that says, "Community Organizer". Words. Who is this guy? I don't trust him ... and no I don't owe him the benefit of the doubt. It's his job to convince me that he is qualified to be president. I am less than impressed with his performances and very concerned about his inadequate exposure at this point. He can't win. already with what little we know he can't win. Hillary can. Don't we want our country back?

NursePatric:

Bravo for saying it as it is! The Obama camp (and media for some crazy reason) are playing it, like it's a holy sin to questions anything about Obama - and spinning it like everyone has an 'obligation' to not only forget and forgive... his very questionable relationships and/or offensive statements; but we are supposed to find a way to fault Hillary for questioning her opponent as well! Mind you, it's encouraged to defame, slur and vilify Hillary as much as humanly possible and the bigger the lie told about her the better!

You are absolutely right when you say: "Who is this guy? I don't trust him ... and no I don't owe him the benefit of the doubt. It's his job to convince me that he is qualified to be president." and I agree that so far, he has certainly not done that. As a matter of fact, the more we see and hear of the Real Obama' , it's clear that Hillary is the only choice!

If you think Hillary will give you the country back then you are mistaken. she wants to win and will say anything. How the heck do you think a person who has $109 million cars about you. this is about Hillary getting into the history books and she and Bill making even more money. Boy you are one of the easily lead. Get ready for food stamps. Do a gut check ! If he CAN'T win then why is he beating her? What does that say about HER?

are people losing jobs to overseas companies? YES
is the rich/ poor gap widening? YES
are people bitter about this??? F*CK YES!
WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

I can do nothing now but shake my head at all the hypocritical BS that is coming out of the media and out of HRCs mouth... Elitist??? Out of touch???

This man just paid off his student loans, took the road less traveled, and helped low income chicago factory workers instead of going for the high paying jobs... he has never seen $50 million in his personal bank account...

Well you are correct in your assessments but Hillary will take advantage of illiteracy in America.

Who do I mostly blame, pundits within the media. They seem to have an agenda all to themselves and like Bush who uses fear in promoting a war the media uses repetition of ignorant convictions. Slow news days I guess.

You have to feel sorry for James. Madeline has been supporting him with her Republican parties insider support and monetary gain. James was so looking forward to Hillary being on the ticket and then James would enjoy a cronyism job to repay Madeline while smirking in the background.

Sorry James, your candidate Hillary will not get the nomination and you will not be rewarded. How sad. Madeline will have to keep supporting him.

He needs to accept responsibility for what HE said and apologize.... Well it is really to late for the apology. He should have done that last Friday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

insulting and very insulting.>>

my my aren't we thin skinned. Someone tells you the truth and you don't like it so go crying to the MLM pundits like the big baby that you are.

Poeple need to wake up and see how the Repugnant party has been playing and manipulating them all along by appealing to racial and cultural fears.. and McCain while at one time he may have been different is now on the same page with them and will continue to play to their fears and play divide and conquer, JUST like HIllary. they are both equally disgusting and Bill and Carville too. This is a struggle for the heart and soul of the Dem party, the Democratic wing of the Dem party is in danger of winning and so the dinosaurs like Bill/Hill/Carville are pulling out All the stops!

If small town people are willing to continue to be used like this as a political football instead of listening to the one politician who is trying to tell them the truth - the one who is REALLY looking to change things, well then as someone said above,

too bad. We DO get the government we deserve!

He did apologize (Saturday) if people were offended by the remarks! He admitted that what he said was not as articulate as he would have liked, but it is MY opinion that if anyone is offended then their intelligence should be insulted because if you take a look around, NOT only in small towns but also large cities, people are bitter, people are MAD AS HELL that Washington has fucked us for the last 3 decades.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:14 PM on 04/14/2008

Obama only apologized because it is hurting him. He still has no idea, nor do most of his supporters, what he said that was so offensive to so many people. That is telling unto itself. Carville makes a good point...Obama can't win on this one so he'd best just let it go.

Obama needs to stick to prepared statements. Maybe he could keep his feet out of his mouth.
