Sen. Hillary Clinton hit hard at Barack Obama on Monday, asserting that his recent controversial Pennsylvania comments made him out of touch with religious folk and gun owners. She's even taken to touting her past experience duck hunting, and raising the sensitive subject of Obama's similarities to another Democratic pol who she says was viewed as elitist -- Sen. John Kerry.

In light of this, a reader tipped the Huffington Post off to an amusing passage from Sally Bedell Smith's book on the Clintons, "For Love Of Politics" -- amusing if only because it seemingly combines all of the issues noted above (the Clintons, guns, elitism, and John Kerry) into a single anecdote.

It is 1994, and Bill Clinton has just passed his landmark assault weapons ban - a huge victory for gun control advocates but legislation that caused consternation among some congressional Democrats, who worried it would come back to haunt them in the midterm election. With the bill signed, the first couple retreats to Martha's Vineyard for a ten-day, rent-free stay at a posh estate, which includes a sailing excursion with James Taylor and -- you guessed it -- Sen. Kerry, while Bill plays rounds of golf and fudges his score.

Here's the passage:

But in defiance of the National Rifle Association, Bill insisted on including a ban on assault weapons that some Democrats worried could hurt them in the midterm contests. [Chief of Staff Leon] Panetta and congressional leaders negotiated all night on Friday the nineteenth and throughout the following day until they struck the final deal. The House passed the thirty-billion-dollar bill on Sunday, August 21, and the Senate followed four days later. Bill had won, but as usual the victory was more fraught than it needed to be.

The wrangling over the bill had delayed the Clinton family's second Martha's Vineyard vacation. When they finally arrived at the island on the twenty-sixth, they enjoyed more generous accommodations than the Spartan McNamara house, where they stayed the previous summer. This time they were guests of Democratic contributor Richard Friedman, a Boston real-estate developer, and once again they paid no rent for their ten-day stay. Friedman's twenty-acre Oyster Pond estate featured a spacious nineteenth-century shingled house, hammocks, horses, a pet pig, and a guest cottage, where Bill could retreat to work and read.

Bill and Hillary easily resumed their favorite vacation routines. They bought stacks of books at the Bickerton & Ripley bookstore in Edgartown and took sailing excursions with singer James Taylor and Senator John Kerry. After several rounds of golf, Bill told reporters he had shot an eighty, which immediately raised eyebrows. That August, the press began to focus on Bill's liberal interpretation of golf rules, especially his frequent use of mulligans - not only off the tee but on the fairway and around the green.

This passage has little relevance to the debate about what Obama said. But leveling the charge that Obama is in the same "elitist" mode as John Kerry, when Clinton herself has traveled in those very circles, is an irony worth noting.

Bill and Hill - a true Working Class vacation, huh?

Hypocrites...

I'll say it again, Hillary loses the nomination, announces her retirement as the Senator from NY because NY no longer serves her purpose. Then she moves to Martha Vineyard, goes on the board of the Carlyle Group never to be heard from again.

HIllary's "Elitism" does not allow her to see that the vast majority of thinking Americans know that (a) Hillary is a Lesbian , (b) Bill & Hillary's marriage is a power sharing arrangement (c) Hillary does not care who Bill sleeps with and (d) Hillary's public displays of disappointment during the Lewinsky scandal were but crocodile tears designed to sway women on the left side of the bell curve (e) she remains married to Bill rather than coming out of the closet because she feels it would doom her politically.

Hillary's epiphany on guns is post Monica, so it could be honest.

It seems 'elitism' is becoming as hard to define as 'Victory in Iraq' - no one agrees on exactly what it means.

It is almost idiotic for Madame Clinton to think that by her calling Mr Obama and elitist, people will not quickly look at her records.
She seems to be the one that is obviously out of touch and certainly bears the mark of an elitist.

All you hard working folks in PA, your plane will arrive this afternoon for your week long trip to Martha's Vinyard ... really, compliments of the Clintons because they want to share their 109 million dollars with people like them.

I didn't grow up in a wealthy Republican household in Park Ridge, Illinois. I didn't have fond childhood memories of going in my father's Lincoln town car for a 2 week vacation each summer at a lake cottage in PA. I didn't get to take ballet and tennis lessons. I wasn't raised as Hillary claimed in her bio Living History, "raised with every advantage."

I didn't get to go to Wellesley, my parents didn't have the money. I didn't get to attend Harvard Law school either. Nor was one of my first jobs out of school working on a Watergate committee. My spouse and I didn't get to take a honeymoon trip to Acapulco.

I didn't move to Arkansas and almost immediately get a job at a college, then a prestigious law firm thanks to my husband's connections. I wasn't asked to serve on the board of Wal-Mart. I didn't make $109 million since Bush has been in office. Don't own a multi million dollar home or vacation home in the Bahamas.

I am a true working American. I worry about paying the bills, about what the recession is doing to my future, about the value of my home dropping almost monthly. I worry about health care, social security and what is happening to the middle class in this country.

Hillary Clinton is about as far from being a middle class American as you can get. Hillary Clinton and John McCain are the rich elitists in this campaign.

All this and you still fail to demonstrate how ANY of this proves Hillary is an "elitist". Worse still, you say nothing about how Obama ISN'T elitist, leading me to believe you think that he is.

This article is bullshit. From a neutral point, Barack better deliver because the effort put through on this article alone warrants him to be able to walk on water.

I thought Al Gore lost the election because Hillary wouldn't give a blowjob to Bil... of course the Supreme Court did kind of steal it from Al Gore. Regardless the Clintons helped Al Gore lose the election.

She tried blaming the Elitist title to why Gore didn't win in 2000 when we all know it had a lot to do with the Lewinsky scandal in which much of America had had enough of a scandal riddled cabinet!!!! SHAME ON YOU HRC!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:58 AM on 04/15/2008

Despite the fact that I have little respect for the Clintons and believe the Lewinsky scandal, though a total scam, did do damage to Gore's campaign, I must state that he ran a horrible campaign, attempting to be what he wasn't and attempting to change himself after every criticism of the press. Also, the media treated him shabbily and gave Bush a free ride. And, of course, he won Florida but Jeb fixed it so that wouldn't be known. We can't lay Gore's loss totally at the feet of the Clintons.

so they went on a vacation and they were elitist because they didn't pay rent when they stayed at a private residence? And they're elitist because some people who sail invite them out (do you think it was Bill doing anything)? And they're elitist because Bill plays golf and takes tons of mulligans instead of having played enough to get an honest 80?

Wow. You reach.. You really reach. Even now Bill would rather drink beer at a razorbacks game than go windsurfing, and your boy Barack bowls less than my 8 year old cousin. he doesn't know what Yuengling is! who's elitist?

This is the president your talking about and I believe that by being in the most powerful position in the world, your kind of an elitist in some ways. Your not so likely to talk to that homeless person at the bus stop.

Richcpl,

here's what reagan really thought about Dubya

Here is an excerpt from the a new book, the REAGAN DIARIES and it is an actual quote that
Reagan wrote about George "W" in his diaries, recently edited by
author Doug Brinkley and published by Harper Collins.

"A moment I've been dreading. George brought his n'er-do-well son
around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the
political one who lives in Florida; the one who hangs around here
all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already
almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I'll call Kinsley
over at The New Republic and see if they'll hire him as a
contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work."

From the REAGAN DIARIES------entry dated May 17, 1986.

Gee any of you regular folks been too Martha's vineyard lately, to stay in an estate and sail for hours, then have the servants bring you your orange duck under glass with Champagne, I'm just so exahausted from working I cannot wait for my next trip. First I'll have to see if Bill & Hill will be there so we can "chum around", maybe Hill & I will go duck hunting then shoot down some boilermakers at the local tavern, before we go to target practice to await our next adventure when she takes me into BOSNIA, so we can dodge bullets! Good, now I think I'll go count my other 109 million dollars. Yup, I'm just one of you, just like Bill & Hill, just regular old people.
I'm sorry, I'm simply "sleep deprived".

I couldn't agree more! With their $110 million earnings, 2 mansions located in DC. and Long Island, who more qualified to call poor OBAMA an elitist than Bill and Hillary Clinton. Even McCain had to get in on the action of dissing Obama, while owning 8 houses. God Bless America.
People are worried about another bomb attack perhaps from some terrorist organization, but I think we have already had our water supply compromised. It appears Americans' are getting dumber by the day. The Cable News stations are off the wall, twisting every word and phrase and talking about it 24 x 7. It's gotten to the point I now turn on the music and read a book. If I see Chris Matthews spitting all over the cameras one more time I will pull an ELVIS and shoot my new big screen TV. And all these so called experts and analyists really need to go get a real job, nobody cares what they think. I'll be back to watch Cable News again a few days before Obama is elected as our president.

Hillary Clinton's newest mantra is this elitist bullshit...saying that the Pubes will use the image of Obama as an elitist in the GE should he face McCain. Well I have the perfect retort for Sen. Obama when he is the Democratic Presidential Candidate and the Republicans even utter the word elitist.

Ii would go something like this: Elitist? Sen. McCain is trying to say that I'm out of touch with America and that I'm an elitist because I believe that people who lose their jobs resort to the comforts of their childhood such as going hunting or attending church...But do you want to know what is elitist? Elitist is Dick Cheney saying "So what" when he was told 73% of America opposes the way the war in Iraq was being handled. That's elitism when you feel that the people of this country mean nothing! And Sen. McCain wants to continue these policies that go across the grain of what America wants.

So, Sen. Clinton's latest spin cycle doesn't hold much water...And for her to insinuate that Al Gore and John Kerry lost elections because they were painted as elitists is pure bullshit. Al Gore was robbed of his Presidency! John Kerry lost because of dispicable lies. Oh and by the way...where the hell was Hill and Bill back then? I didn't see them crawl out from under their rock and denounce the things that were being said about either of these candidates.

I don't care where the Clintons stayed or what they do in their spare time or if they are rich as Croesus, which they are. I do care that they are hawks, corporate shills, dishonest, unscrupulous and make a lot of bad decisions.

Hillary is such a hypocrite. Remember back in the early 90s when she got crucified by the Rethuglicans for saying she "could have stayed home and baked cookies"? They slammed her as elitist and condescending to women who didn't work outside the home. Now this Yale-educated lawyer with $109 million in the bank and a husband who charges $350,000 per speech has the nerve to attack Obama as "elitist." I guess she's got a really short memory.

Clinton on Guns
We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans to legitimately own handguns and rifles ... that we are unable to think about reality.

Hillary is a complete product of elitism. Furthermore she's been in a bubble since becoming first lady of Arkansas back in the 80s. I read a couple weeks ago that she said she hasn't driven herself in over 16 years!! If you have $110 million dollars you are, by very definition: elite. A conversation on elitism is not a conversation Hillary should want to have.

It's amazing to me that Hillary said the press was being hard on her when they called her out on her complete Bosnia fabrication. And isnt it funny, I didnt hear Obama bring her Bosnia lie up once. That really demonstrates the difference in character between them, imagine if Obama had said he was dodging sniper fire - Hillary would go on the war path. I think Obama should release a Hillary in Bosnia ad this week. If she wants to play in the gutter he should give her what she wants - because he will win that fight.

I personally think Hilary is a condecending patronising opportunist because it is clear as day to anyone that she took advantage of those comments by suddenly becoming Annie Oakley and swilling whiskey and beer. Is that what being a small town democrat is that you hunt ducks go to church and drink beer. You dont have to act like someone to identify with them. Then she has the nerve to say that she is going to fight for them. How? By shipping their job overseas and devastating their communites by making promises you cant keep. By showing up once in a while to hunt ducks and swill whiskey.

People are going through real problems facing real issues the war in Iraq the economy and she thinks to get votes she just need to throw back a few beers. His comments may have been clumsy but her response was downright INSULTING to these people. Instead of tackling issues that need to be address in these people's lives you know like JOBS she is talking about shooting ducks. She is pandering and INSULTING its no wonder she got BOOED. Whatever he did may have been bad but what she did is certainly WORSE. I thought she had a brain desperation really makes people DUMB.
