WASHINGTON — After days on the campaign defensive, Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday of leveling criticism straight from the Republican playbook and said even so, he will win the White House over John McCain and an "out of touch" GOP.

"I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they've chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they've embraced for the last three decades ..." Obama said.

"This philosophy isn't just out of touch, it's put our economy out of whack."

Obama spoke at The Associated Press annual meeting, a few hours after McCain had made a less combative appearance of his own.

The Arizona senator announced support for legislation to protect the confidentiality of news sources, although he also challenged the news media to acknowledge its errors "beyond the small print on a corrections page."

He also displayed his penchant for occasionally differing with the Bush administration, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession.

In his speech and in a more relaxed question-and-answer session meant to approximate the setting on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain repeatedly declined to label Obama an elitist for the comments that have roiled the race for the White House in recent days.

"I think those comments are elitist," he said. "I think anybody who disparages anyone who is hardworking, the dedicated people who cherish the right to hunt and observe their values and the culture ... and say that's because they are unhappy with their economic conditions, I think that's a fundamental contradiction to what I think America is."

"These are people who produced the generation that made the world safe for democracy."

McCain's remarks were his latest reaction to Obama's description last week of residents of small towns that have been economically distressed for a generation or more.

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," the Illinois senator said at a private fundraiser in San Francisco. The Huffington Post reported the remarks on Friday.

Obama's comments at the AP's annual luncheon appeared to reflect a double-edged political imperative.

While still locked in a tight race for the party's nomination, he wants to do what he can to blunt McCain's recent rise in hypothetical general election matchups. At the same time, he does not want to give ground to Clinton, whose aides have welcomed the recent controversy as a possible way to raise doubts about his electability in the fall.

Obama walked to the podium with a speech that included strongly worded criticism of McCain, who is assured of claiming the Republican presidential nomination in September at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn.

"He's had a front-row seat to the last eight years of disastrous policies that have widened the income gap and saddled our children with debt," Obama said. "And now he's promising four more years of the very same thing."

Obama said McCain supports permanent tax breaks for the wealthiest that he once opposed, backs trade deals without safeguards for U.S. workers and promises privatization of Social Security.

Obama's focus turned to Clinton when he began fielding questions, though, reflecting what aides say is a rising anger after days of criticism of his comments.

Asked about the impact of the long nominating battle on the party's chances of winning the White House, he said, "I have tried to figure out how to show restraint and make sure that, during this primary contest, we're not damaging each other so badly that it's hard for us to run in November.

"Obviously, it's a little easier for me to say that, since, you know, I lead in delegates and states and popular vote."

Clinton "may not feel that she can afford to be so constrained," he said, adding at one point that she's "been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican Party will be using against me in November."

In fact, Clinton released a new ad in Pennsylvania on the subject of Obama's comments in which several unidentified people described as her supporters talk about how insulted they felt by what Obama said.

Later, while speaking to reporters traveling with him to Pennsylvania, McCain said Obama should apologize for his remarks against "small-town America."

"I think his remarks may be defining," McCain said, adding that Obama's unwillingness to apologize indicates "a certain out-of-touch elitism."

He also called on Obama to repudiate former President Carter for planning to meet with Hamas.

Senator Obama should thank Senator Clinton for providing some training to deal with these issues and attacks in the general election. It's not as if Clinton is revealing any secrets. She didn't create Reverend Wright and bittergate although she is trying to capitalize on it. It's not as if the Republicans wouldn't know what to do. Hillary isn't handing them a "how to" book. Obama's statements are not the only ones being misconstrued and there will be future statements misconstrued. Learn to deal with this now because a tougher, meaner foe lurks in the future.

The lobbyist loving sow will stop at nothing to win this election even if it means tearing the Democratic Party completely apart. Shame on you Hillary! This scorched earth type of campaigning could have been expected from the Republican Party, but never from another democrat. in the primary. Her slight rise in the polls shows just how gullible some people can be. I can't believe how many bought into the idea that Obama is an elitist after all the community work he has done in Chicago. She is the elitist. She is the one that is out of touch. She is the one that has been spouting pure lies at every campaign stop. She is the one that has a spouse, and a campaign manager that makes deals that are directly opposite from her stances on the campaign. She will be the first candidate that will sell the voters in Pennsylvania, and every where else down the river, and she will be followed closely by McCain. Wake up and smell the manure people this is just another vile tatic to steal the election. She is not and never has been a friend of working class people.

It is tiring to continue to read the distortion and spin from Obama and his supporters. If Obama attacks Ms. Clinton there is no residual problem. But any attack on Obama is a lie. This is such a perverted and wrong-minded way to view this election. Obama cannot win the nomination without the help of the super delegates he has spoken so poorly of on a number of occasions. Ms. Clinton is in the same position, she has to have adequate support from super delegates to win.
It is a lie to say Ms. Clinton can win the nomination only by stealing it, that just isn;t true. And if a number of Obama endorsers were truthful in their claims that the super delegate votes should go according to the wishes of the state Ms. Clinton must get their votes. Kennedy and Kerry are from a state carried by Ms. Clinton, unless each one lied they are obligated to vote for Ms. Clinton.
If anyone on the Clinton side made statements about Obama similar to the statements included in this posting there would be a furor unabated. It is a good indication of the hypocritical nature of Obama supporters to complain about Ms. CLinton's words and tactics while engaging in such gutter language.

Bubba, this ain't the Miss America pageant and they're not competing for Miss Congeniality.

William Jefferson Clinton is the one who keeps encouraging the attacks, and he's been bragging about what a fighter Hillary is.

So it's charming and disingenuous for you to present her as the delicate victim of that awful Obama and his band of big meanies when it's her husband holding her up as a punching bag.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:39 AM on 04/16/2008

The only way she can win is by changing the narrative in such a way that it might make Super Delegates less likely to support Obama. The Clinton's knowing full well, from experience, that the press will turn a mole hill into a mountain are delibrately exploiting a truthful, but poorly worded statement made by Obama to the max. A poorly worded statement is in no way equal to the flat out stories she has conjured up during the campaign. She also knows that he is hurt more not by his mistake, but in responding to what she wants people to believe he meant. His polls go down when he begins, as he must, to answer charges that just aren't even within the vicinity of the truth. Every time he forced to step away from his more positive change messages he slips in the polls because you cannot speak of a knew kind of politics, and then be forced to go after your opponent as your opponent has gone after you. It makes you look like you are saying one thing and acting in another way. The voters are far more sensitive to that notion than the word "bitter." The trouble with these tatics now is in the end it will weaken the democratic nominee in the general election, no matter who the nominee turns out to be.

It would help this blog if contributors had to enter a party designation so that we know from whence it comes. I'm a Democrat and believe I have the best of reasons to be a proud one at that.

What a silly idea...but just for the hell of it, here's my party: None. Never. Your personal opinions would be of the same value if you were affiliated with any other party, and you'd be just as proud of it. I laugh at the turkeys who are saying stupid nonsense like "(whoever) will stop at nothing..." Duh. That's the essence of being a party.

Andyboy/butchie65: You have just proven the point of my last two blogs.
The problem with Obama's supporters is that many of them seem
incapable of being objective or thinking outside the box. Perhaps it is
your hate for Hillary Clinton that blinds you. None the less, I find it amusing
that you think of yourselves as pioneers of change. Castro would have loved you both!
In any case, I am going to make this easy for you. If you go
to usgov.org you will see that the senate records of both candidates
is available. Personally, I am not sure if Obama's first piece of legislation was a world
changing event, but having Rosa Parks placed on a postage stamp was not quite enough
for me to want to hand the keys to the country over to him. There is also a biography on Hillary Clinton available at pbs.org. Of course there are numerous other places to do your homework, but I don't want to take to much away from your intellectual blogging. Good-Bye for now and Thank you for making my workday more exciting.
Oh yea and by the way! I love love love love love Hillary! Hillary 08 and 2012!

WOW!

While the two Dem comics are belittling one another, McCain actually made some great points today.

Elimination of fed gas taxes for the summer, doubling of the personal tax exemption, elimination of quite a few middle-class tax penalties, better credit for college kids' loans, a cap on fed discretionary spending.& my personal favorite, a simplified tax form.

Each of thse gives more power to the individual & less to the government, and so I fully realize that the Dems will strongly oppose them all.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:01 PM on 04/15/2008

Isn't there ANYTHING on this list that McCain couldn't have ALREADY tried to get his lock-step-voting Republican to pass into legislation? Why hasn't he even tried?

And how does HE expect to pay for HIS and Bush's WAR with all of those tax cuts? Oh yeah, they will leave it up to our greatgrandchldren, if they don't blow up the whole damn world first!

Payback's a b*tch or so they say. Let's see the Obama campaign and supporters consistently implied that Hillary Clinton is a racist....some like Jesse Jackson Jr openly lied about her, called her tears "fake", implied on she is a racist.
She had the nerve to say that LBJ helped us all in working toward MLK's dream. Now her comments were taken out of context, her meaning skewed. This is a woman who for decades worked on civil rights issues, and was embraced by the African American community. Suddenly she's turned into a racist. As far as I know Senator Obama's lifetime community organizing did not include rural folks. But that's OK. What he said was taken out of context PERHAPS and the Clinton campaign jumped on it. What goes around, comes around.
The hypocrisy on Huffington is amazing. The same bloggers trashing Clinton for "sliming Obama" were jumping on the "the Clintons are racists" bandwagon. Those people KNOW that is lie. Same thing with the MSM.....from Herbert to Cafferty, left to right, they KNOW the Clintons are not and never have been racists.
So maybe Obama is not an elitist. Maybe he is being trounced on. For him to say Clinton is using Rove tactics is hypocritical. His campaign follows Rove to the letter...HIT THEM IN THEIR STRENGTHS. One of Clinton's strengths was with the African American community. Axlerod's strategy was clear.....imply they are racists every chance they get. Rove couldn't have done it better.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:57 PM on 04/15/2008

Perhaps Hillary Clinton is not a racist---I suppose the jury is still out on that one. But --as she apparently sees it,--her one last chance to win the nomination is to convince people that there are a lot more closet racists than people think there are. (What else is that "unelectable" accusation about, if not that...when she has lower support than Obama does from everybody but old women)?

What she wants is people to ask themselves this something like this: "Well, I'm not a racists (at least I hope I'm not), but what if EVERYBODY else is...what if they go into the voting booth in November and realize only then that they can't vote for a black man?" And she wants people to answer their own question this way: "Geez....that doesn't seem AT ALL LIKELY , but WHAT IF IT HAPPENS? I had better vote for HIllary, at least people dislike her right out in the open."

That is what she is hoping for.

In other words, she is cynically hoping that people are more intolerant than even they themselves know, or worse, that they will begin to fear that other people are more intolerant.

She is willing to set civil rights back 50 years. She is disgusting.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:50 PM on 04/15/2008

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:42 PM on 04/15/2008

Hillary has been using the dog whistle for quite some time now. As an African American woman she lost my vote many months ago. This has nothing to do with Barack and has everything to do with Hillary. Just this weekend, she showed me how classless she really is. It was unlady like for the Presidential nominee to show us how she can be one of boys in my opinion. I was taught whatever you do, be a lady.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:29 PM on 04/15/2008

You know checkbook, Obama's campaign has not passed an opportunity to attack
her. Obama has pretended he is above all this, but you can't seriously believe that act. As far as Hillary Clinton is concerned, if a she did not play hardball with the boys, she would be marginalized and not seen as being presidential. However, it is sad that we have such little respect for woman in this country that we have to make them get down in the dirt with the boys to prove they are capable.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 04:52 PM on 04/15/2008

Yes, that's deplorable.

Women shouldn't have to compete with men. They should be lifted to their rightful place ruling over others without being forced to participate in the process.

Which is why Hillary Clinton did not enter the race for the 2008 Presidency.

Your girlfriend signed on to the fight and her husband is the one who holds her up as a punching bag.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:12 PM on 04/16/2008

I have actually heard Clinton supporters say that her lies and smears are only temporary, and that once she is safely in the White House, she will revert to some kind of sane and honorable person (as though she was either of those before). That is how the old feminists are kidding themselves. Hardball is one thing, but taking things out of context and spinning them is BUSHROVIAN. And hoping that the voting public is secretly racist is beyond reprehensible...it is in a class by itself when it comes to disgusting campaign tactics.
