The Army Times highlight's John McCain's latest national security gaffe:

Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona may not have been paying the closest of attention last week during hearings on the Bush administration's Iraq policy.

Speaking Monday at the annual meeting of the Associated Press, McCain was asked whether he, if elected, would shift combat troops from Iraq to Afghanistan to intensify the search for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

"I would not do that unless Gen. [David] Petraeus said that he felt that the situation called for that," McCain said, referring to the top U.S. commander in Iraq.

Petraeus, however, made clear last week that he has nothing to do with the decision. Testifying last week before four congressional committees, including the Senate Armed Services Committee on which McCain is the ranking Republican, Petraeus said the decision about whether troops could be shifted from Iraq to Afghanistan was not his responsibility because his portfolio is limited to the multi-national force in Iraq.

Decisions about Afghanistan would be made by others, he said.

"I've been sort of focused on another task," Petraeus said when pressed about whether more troops should be diverted to Afghanistan rather than Iraq.

Here's video of McCain's original remarks:

Little old, confused, erratic, short fused man, is beyond help. But, the MSM will never point all his uniformed comments. How can they hurt their patron saint? They much rather will play Obama's thrutful comments 24/7, so all the ignorant people gets excited.
I hope the number one issue for future President Obama will be education.

What makes McCain a foreign policy expert.? I greatly respect his service to his our country, as is true for all those who have served and continue to do so, yet given all the mistakes he has made, what makes him understand reports better than Obama? We are at a different time in history and I think that what makes a great leader is one who has a better understanding of the world in which we live, in terms of culture and attitude, rather than force. The world has spent a lifetime killing, it is time we all started thinking--with our brains and not our emotions. We need sound judgment. We need someone who is brave enough to reach out to those with whom we disagree.

Our armed forces are supposed to take their direction from the "Commander and Chief", who in turn is supposed to get authorization from Congress. Any candidate that does not understand this is not worth consideration.

I guess what Senator McCain has failed to understand by asking that question is what most of the politicians in the Senate have failed to understand.
Policy decisions are not for the Generals, they are the responsibility of the civilian administrators.
Elected officials set out the policy, and if there is a military component of - the Generals will called on to act on that part.
McCain needs to understand this fundamental truth.

He gets this directly from the Bush camp. Whenever anyone asks you anything about military matters defer to Gen Petraeus. He was probably napping during this one. Like Reagan used to do.

great point, caywen. Yet, the media perpetuate the myth that McShame is a military expert.

Not only is this like his fifth gaffe in the past 2 weeks about his supposed area of expertise - i.e. the war in iraq and the military, in general - but it also shows how incredibly biased are the corporate media. They will never tell the American people that John McShame is an idiot.

Oh.My.God. And, this man is running for President. Unbelievable.

Nope, Senator McCain, that would be the Theater Commander making that recommendation along with the Joint Chiefs and the SecDef.

This man is I'm sure a good man, but he's either sadly lacking in the intellect department OR his age is Definitely a critical issue, either way...

I wonder how much of McCain's warmongering is psychologically linked to the fact that he is physically helpless, thanks to the horrible experience of being tortured? When you can't lift your arms, maybe bombing cities gives you a compensatory sense of power.

If anyone cannot see that John McCain will be another Bush, take another look. Bush hasn't been president, Cheney has been calling the shots. If John McCain gets elected, HE won't be calling the shots either. What a perfect candidate for the republicans, someone with early dimentia who can easily be manipulated and kept in his place. Look at all the flip-flops McCain has made, just to win the nomination. Realistically, John McCain should have gotten the nod eight years ago instead of GWB. That was John's time, not now, but the republicans didn't think he'd been "seasoned" enough back then. I actually feel sorry for the old guy.

With all due respect McCain is too old to be elected President . He would be 78 years old by the end of his first term . Look at the European Union ,most of their leaders are in their mid fifites to early sixties . The only countries that seemed to have very elderly leaders are those former Latin American juntas or those African Dictatorships. McCain is too old for the job ,was'nt it Chuck Norris who said that Presidents aged quickly ,so McCain when he is 77 will actually be 88.

John McCain was born on August 29, 1936, On January 20, 2009, he will be 72 years old. On January 20 2013, he will be 76. Should he run for a second term and succeed, he will be 80 at the end of his term. The Baby Boomers aren't going to consider him old for a nanosecond and they will be the largest voting bloc for the next two decades.

As for a second term, McCain has already hinted that he might be a one term President. There hasn't been a successful second term for any President since FDR in 1936. Perhaps it is time to revisit the concept of term lengths. One six year term might be the answer.

Fifth from the bottom of his Naval Academy class? Just what the republicans need, another mediocre intellect that could be managed. A middy from any other family might well have been washed out.

When your only stategy is to bomb, bomb, and bomb some more (remember he was a bomber pilot) then you don't need to know all the fine details about the who, what, or where - just bomb everyone to make sure you get the right ones.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:38 AM on 04/15/2008

Do you actually think John McCain really wants to bomb everybody and every thing?? I don't think so. Just like Barack Obama is going to bring the troops out of Iraq within a year.......sure he is.

Actually it will be within 2 years. 1-2 brigades per month from 140,000 troops. He would transfer troops to Afghanistan/Pakistan to go after Bin Laden and to get our NATO allies to send more troops there also.

This "gaffe" is probably not a gaffe at all.

It's become apparent that, probably quite soon, Patraeus is going to move up and become CentCom's CIC to replace the retiring Admiral Fowler.

Therefore, McCain's assertion that the issue of moving troops from Iraq to Afghanistan will fall under the purview of General Patraeus is not a "gaffe" but rather astute foresight..

Michale. Get a clue. The man said what he said. Now you purport to go into his head and guess that he has some amazing insight into the future.

The man is damn near 100 years old and that problem comes out more every day. I love senior citizens, my grandpa is one, and they tell the best stories about the good old days but America cannot afford to have a senile old veteran with daily POW flashbacks to run the show. His time has past.

His facade of knowing about National Security and World Affairs is pitiful. Now he is on the thrird attempt to figure the economy, but could not do it himself, he has to have Mitt Romney doing the morning rounds for him explaining the new economic proposals. America cannot afford to have McCranky at the helm. I warn you all he is dangerously inept.

By the bi, just to correct my OWN gaffe in my initial post. Patraeus is mentioned to replace Admiral FALLON.. Not Fowler...

What's going to happen to all the war profiteers if we leave Iraq? Billions of $'s going from America into stock portfolios by way of Iraq. We'd hate to leave these republicans high and dry.
